On the ninth or tenth (of the dark fortnight) the Anvashtakya (ceremony is performed).\n2. To the south-east (of the house) they partition off (a place with mats or the like), and to the northern part of that (place) he should carry a fire which has been kindled by attrition.\n3. Let him take one portion of rice, let him remove the husks once, and let him cook it, stirring it up from right to left.\n5, 1. navam\u00eem dasam\u00eem v\u00e2nvashtakyam. 2. dakshinap\u00fbrvabh\u00e2ge pariv\u00e2rya tatrottar\u00e2rdhe mathitv\u00e2gnim pranayet. 3. sakridgrih\u00eet\u00e2n vr\u00eeh\u00een sakritphal\u00eekrit\u00e2n prasavyam ud\u00e2yuva\u00f1 srapayed.\n4. And some flesh of that thigh (see above, chap. 4, 16).\n5. He should take it from the fire in a southern direction, and should omit the second sprinkling (of \u00c2gya) on it.\n6. To the west of the fire he should dig, in the southern part (of the place mentioned in S\u00fbtra 2) three pits, four inches in depth and breadth.\n7. He should carry the fire to the east of them.\n8. He should strew (Darbha-grass round the fire),\n9. And (into) the pits.\n10. Having spread out to the west of the fire a layer of southward-pointed grass so that it is inclined towards the south, he should put (a mat) on it.\n11. On that (grass) he should place the sacrificial implements, one by one.\n12. Cutting off (the prescribed portions of the sacrificial food, and putting those portions) into the brazen vessel he should sacrifice, picking out (portions of the Havis) with the pot-ladle, with (the formulas), 'Sv\u00e2h\u00e2 to Soma Pitrimat! Sv\u00e2h\u00e2 to Agni Kavyav\u00e2hana!' (MB. II. 3, 1, 2.)\n13 13-31. With his left hand he should lay down a firebrand on the southern side of the pits (S\u00fbtra 6), with\n4. amushm\u00e2k ka sakthno m\u00e2msam iti. 5. dakshinodv\u00e2sya na pratyabhigh\u00e2rayet. 6. pask\u00e2d agner dakshin\u00e2s tisrah karsh\u00fbh khany\u00e2k katura\u1e45gulam adhas tiryak ka. 7. t\u00e2s\u00e2m purast\u00e2d agnim pranayet. 8. strinuy\u00e2t. 9. karsh\u00fbs ka. 10. pask\u00e2d agne svastaram dakshin\u00e2grais trinair dakshin\u00e2pravanam \u00e2st\u00eerya bris\u00eem upari nidadhy\u00e2t. 11. tasminn ekaikam \u00e2haret. 12. kamse samavad\u00e2ya mekshanenopagh\u00e2tam guhuy\u00e2t sv\u00e2h\u00e2 Som\u00e2ya pitrimate sv\u00e2h\u00e2gnaye kavyav\u00e2han\u00e2yeti. 13. savyenolmukam dakshinatah karsh\u00fbr nidadhy\u00e2d apahat\u00e2 iti.\n(the formula), '(The Asuras have been) driven away (MB. II, 3, 3).\n14. (He should perform the different rites) in the eastern pit for his father,\n15. In the middle for his grandfather,\n16. In the last for his great-grandfather.\n17. Let him pour out vessels of water. from right to left, into the pits, pronouncing the name of each one (of his ancestors), with (the formula), 'N.N.! Wash thyself, and they who follow thee here, and they whom thou followest. To thee Svadh\u00e2!'\n18. In the same way he should put down the Pindas for them and should murmur, 'Here, O Fathers, enjoy yourselves; show your manly vigour each for his part' (MB. II, 3, 6).\n19. After he has spoken thus, he should turn to the north, doubling his left arm, turning round from right to left.\n20. Holding his breath and fixing his thoughts on something good he should, while turning back (in the same way), murmur: 'The Fathers have enjoyed themselves; they have shown their manly vigour each for his part' (MB. II, 3, 7).\n21. He should sprinkle collyrium on three Darbha\u2014\n14. p\u00fbrvasy\u00e2m karshv\u00e2m pitur. 15. madhyam\u00e2y\u00e2m pit\u00e2mahasyo. 16. \u093dttam\u00e2y\u00e2m prapit\u00e2mahasyo. 17. \u093ddap\u00e2tr\u00e2ny apasalavi karsh\u00fbshu ninayed ekaikasya n\u00e2moktv\u00e2s\u00e2v avanenikshva ye k\u00e2tra tv\u00e2nu y\u00e2ms ka tram anu tasmai te sv\u00e2heti (correct, svadheti). 18. tathaiva pind\u00e2n nidh\u00e2ya gaped atra pitaro m\u00e2dayadhvam yath\u00e2bh\u00e2gam \u00e2vrish\u00e2yadhvam ity. 19. uktvoda\u1e45\u1e45 \u00e2varteta savyam b\u00e2hum upasamhritya prasavyam \u00e2vrityo. 20. \u093dpat\u00e2mya kaly\u00e2nam dhy\u00e2yann abhipary\u00e2vartam\u00e2no gaped ain\u00eemadanta pitaro yath\u00e2bh\u00e2gam \u00e2vrish\u00e2yishateti. 21. tisro darbhapi\u00f1g\u00fbl\u00eer a\u00f1ganena nighrishya karsh\u00fbshu nidadhy\u00e2d yath\u00e2pindam.\nblades, and should put them down into the pits in the same way as the Pindas,\n22. And sesamum oil and perfumes.\n23. For the Pindas and the following offerings he should alter the formula (S\u00fbtra 17) accordingly.\n24. Now (follows) the deprecation.\n25. On the eastern pit he lays his hands, turning the inside of the right hand upwards, with (the formula), 'Adoration to you, O Fathers, for the sake of life! Adoration to you, O Fathers, for the sake of vital breath!' (MB. II, 3, 8.)\n26. On the middle, turning the inside of the left hand upwards, with (the formula), 'Adoration to you, O Fathers, for the sake of terror! Adoration to you, O Fathers, for the sake of sap!' (MB. l.l.)\n27. On the western, turning the inside of the right hand upwards, with (the formula), 'Adoration to you, O Fathers, for the sake of comfort (svadh\u00e2)! Adoration to you, O Fathers, for the sake of wrath!' (MB. II, 3, 9.)\n28. Joining his hands\u2014\n29. (He should murmur the formula), 'Adoration to you' (MB. II, 3, 9).\n30. He should recite over the pits (the verse), 'Bringing strength' (MB. II, 3, 13).\n32. The middle Pinda he should give to his wife to eat, if she is desirous of a son, with (the verse), 'Give fruit.'\n33. With (the verse), '(G\u00e2tavedas) has been our messenger' (MB. II, 3, 15), he should throw the firebrand into the fire.\n34. They should take the sacrificial vessels back two by two.\n35 35-39. The same is the rite of the Pindapitriyag\u00f1a.\n36. Let him cook the Havis in the (sacred) domestic fire.\n37. From that fire (let him take the fire which) he carries forward (see above, S\u00fbtra 2).\n38. (Here is only) one pit.\n39. No layer of grass (S\u00fbtra 10).\n40 40. Of the mess of cooked food sacred to Indr\u00e2n\u00ee he should sacrifice with (the verse), 'The Ek\u00e2shtak\u00e2' (MB. II, 3, 19).
