Having kept the vow (of fasting) through one fortnight, he should, on the first day of the dark fortnight, feed the Br\u00e2hmanas with boiled milk-rice prepared of one Kamsa of rice.\n2. The small grains of that (rice) he should sacrifice (day by day) at the evening twilight to the west of the village, on a place which he has besmeared (with cowdung), with the formula, 'To Phala' (MB. II, 5, 17).\n3. And with (the formula), 'To Phalla!' The same on the first day of the next dark fortnight.\n4. He shall observe chastity till the end (of the rite).\n5. A hundred cart-loads (of gold) will be his.\n6 6-23. A Br\u00e2hmana should elect the site for building his house on white ground, a Kshatriya on red, a Vaisya on black, which should be even, covered with grass, not salinous, not dry\u2014\n7. Where the water flows off to the north-west.\n8. (Plants) with milky juice or with thorns or acrid plants should not be there.\n2, 1. ardham\u00e2savrat\u00ee t\u00e2misr\u00e2dau br\u00e2hman\u00e2n \u00e2sayed vr\u00eehikamsaudanam. 2. tasya kan\u00e2n apar\u00e2su sandhy\u00e2su pratyag gr\u00e2m\u00e2t sthandilam upalipya Phal\u00e2yeti guhuy\u00e2t. 3. Phall\u00e2yeti kaivam ev\u00e2parasmims t\u00e2misr\u00e2dau. 4. brahmakaryam \u00e2 sam\u00e2pter. 5. \u00e2kitasatam bhavati. 6. gaure bh\u00fbmibh\u00e2ge br\u00e2hmano lohite kshatriyah krishne vaisyo\u093dvas\u00e2nam goshayet samam lomasam an\u00eerinam asushkam. 7. yatrodakam pratyagud\u00eek\u00eem pravartate. 8. ksh\u00eerinah kantakinah [sic] katuk\u00e2s k\u00e2traushadhayo na syur.\n9. (Soil) on which Darbha-grass grows, brings holy lustre;\n10. Big sorts of grass, strength;\n11. Tender grass, cattle.\n12. Or (the site of the house) should have the form of bricks (?) or of . . . . . . . (?)\n13. Or there should be natural holes (in the ground) in all directions.\n14, 15. (A house) with its door to the east brings wealth and fame; with its door to the north, children and cattle. By one with its door to the south all wishes (are obtained). The back-door should not face (?) the house-door.\n16. Milk-rice should be offered,\n17. And a black cow,\n18. Or a white goat. Or only milk-rice.\n19. In the middle of the house he should sacrifice the fat (of the animal) and the milk-rice, mixed with \u00c2gya, taking eight portions (of that mixture), with (the verse), 'V\u00e2stoshpati!' (MB. II, 6, I.)\n20. And with the seven last (texts) used at the driving away of misfortune (see above, chap. I, 20, 21).\n21. And towards the intermediate points, and upwards and downwards.\n23. This (he should repeat) every year, or at the two sacrifices of the first-fruits (of rice and barley).\n24 24. With the two (formulas), 'Obeying the will' (MB. II, 6, 7, 8), he should sacrifice two oblations.\n25.
