This is the rite for all Darvi-sacrifices.\n2. 2 At the end of the Mantras constantly the word Sv\u00e2h\u00e2 (is pronounced).\n3. 3 (Oblations) for which no Mantras are prescribed (are made merely with the words), 'To such and such (a deity) sv\u00e2h\u00e2!'\u2014according to the deity (to whom the oblation is made).\n4. 4 He sacrifices with the Vy\u00e2hritis, 'Bh\u00fbh! Bhuvah! Suvah!'\u2014with the single (three Vy\u00e2hritis) and with (the three) together.\n5. 5 (The Mantras for the two chief oblations are), the (verse), 'Life-giving, Agni!' (Taitt. Br\u00e2hmana I, 2, 1, 11), (and),\n'Life-giving, O god, choosing long life, thou whose face is full of ghee, whose back is full of ghee, Agni, drinking ghee, the noble ambrosia that comes from the cow, lead this (boy) to old age, as a father (leads) his son. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2!'\n6. (Then follow oblations with the verses),\n'This, O Varuna' (Taitt. Samh. II, 1, 11, 6),\n'For this I entreat thee' (Taitt. Samh., loc. cit.),\n'Thou, Agni' (Taitt. Samh. II, 5, 12, 3),\n'Thus thou, Agni' (Taitt. Samh., loc. cit.),\n'Thou, Agni, art quick. Being quick, appointed (by us) in our mind (as our messenger), thou who art quick, earnest the offering (to the gods). O quick one, bestow medicine on us! Sv\u00e2h\u00e2!'\u2014(and finally) the (verse),\n'Prag\u00e2pati!' (Taitt. Samh. I, 8, 14, 2).\n7. 7 (With the verse), 'What I have done too much in this sacrifice, or what I have done here deficiently, all that may Agni Svishtakrit, he who knows it, make well sacrificed and well offered for me. To Agni Svishtakrit, the offerer of well-offered (sacrifices), the offerer of everything, to him who makes us succeed in our offerings and in our wishes, sv\u00e2h\u00e2!'\u2014he offers (the Svishtakrit oblation) over the easterly part of the northerly part (of the fire), separated from the other oblations.\n8. 8 Here some add as subordinate oblations, before the Svishtakrit, the Gaya, Abhy\u00e2t\u00e2na, and R\u00e2shtrabhrit (oblations).\n9. 9 The Gaya (oblations) he sacrifices with (the thirteen Mantras), 'Thought, sv\u00e2h\u00e2! Thinking, sv\u00e2h\u00e2!'\u2014or, 'To thought sv\u00e2h\u00e2! To thinking sv\u00e2h\u00e2!' (&c.);\n10. 10 The Abhy\u00e2t\u00e2na (oblations) with (the eighteen Mantras), 'Agni is the lord of beings; may he protect me' (&c.).\n11. 11 (The words), 'In this power of holiness, in\nthis worldly power (&c.)' are added to (each section of) the Abhy\u00e2t\u00e2na formulas.\n12. 12 With (the last of the Abhy\u00e2t\u00e2na formulas) 'Fathers! Grandfathers!' he sacrifices or performs worship, wearing the sacrificial cord over his right shoulder.\n13. 13 The R\u00e2shtrabhrit (oblations he sacrifices) with (the twelve Mantras), 'The champion of truth, he whose law is truth.' After having quickly repeated (each) section, he sacrifices the first oblation with (the words), 'To him sv\u00e2h\u00e2!' the second (oblation) with (the words), 'To them sv\u00e2h\u00e2!'\n14. 14 Having placed a stone near the northerly junction of the pegs (which are laid round the fire), (the teacher)\u2014\n144:2 3, 2. Gobhila I, 9, 25.\n144:3 S\u00e2\u1e45kh\u00e2yana I, 9, 18.\n144:4 S\u00e2\u1e45kh\u00e2yana I, 12, 12. 13; Gobhila I, 9, 27. As to suvah, the spelling of the Taittir\u00eeyas for svah, see Indische Studien, XIII, 105.\n144:5 5, 6. In the second Mantra we should read vrin\u00e2no instead of grin\u00e2no; comp. 'To him' (tasmai) is masculine, 'to them' (t\u00e2bhyah) feminine. The purport of these words will be explained best by a translation of the first section of the R\u00e2shtrabhrit formulas: 'The champion of truth, he whose law is truth, Agni is the Gandharva. His Apsaras are the herbs; \"sap\" is their name. May he protect this power of holiness and this worldly power. May they protect this power of holiness and this worldly power. To him sv\u00e2h\u00e2!
