Narayanasvami Aiyar, [1914]\nAt the end of \u1e0cv\u0101para yuga, N\u0101ra\u1e0da 2 went to Brahma and addressed him thus: \"O Lord, how shall I, roaming 3 over the earth, be able to cross Kali?\" To which Brahma thus replied: \"Well asked. Hearken to that which all \u015aru\u1e6dis (the Ve\u1e0das) keep secret and hidden, through which one may cross the sams\u0101ra (mundane existence) of Kali. He shakes off (the evil effects of) Kali through the mere uttering of the name of the Lord N\u0101r\u0101ya\u1e47a, who is the primeval Purusha.\" Again N\u0101ra\u1e0da asked Brahma: \"What is the name?\" To which Hira\u1e47yagarbha (Brahma) replied thus: (the words are:) \"1. Har\u0113, 2. R\u0101ma, 3. Har\u0113, 4. R\u0101ma, 5. R\u0101ma, 6. R\u0101ma, 7. Har\u0113, 8. Har\u0113; 9. Har\u0113 10. K\u1e5bsh\u1e47a, 11. Har\u0113, 12. K\u1e5bsh\u1e47a, 13. K\u1e5bsh\u1e47a, 14. K\u1e5bsh\u1e47a 15. Har\u0113, 16. Har\u0113. These sixteen names (words) are destructive of the evil effects of Kali. No better means than this is to be seen in all the Ve\u1e0das. These (sixteen names) destroy the \u0101vara\u1e47a (or the centripetal force which produces the sense of individuality) of j\u012bva surrounded by the sixteen kal\u0101s (rays). Then like the\nsphere of the sun which shines fully after the clouds (screening it) disperse, Parabrahman (alone) shines.\"\nN\u0101ra\u1e0da asked: \"O Lord, what are the rules to be observed with reference to it?\" To which Brahma replied that there were no rules for it. Whoever in a pure or an impure state, utters these always, attains the same world of, or proximity with, or the same form of, or absorption into Brahma.\nWhoever utters three and a half kotis 1 (or thirty-five millions) times this man\u1e6dra composed of sixteen names (or words) crosses the sin of the murder of a Br\u0101hma\u1e47a. He becomes purified from the sin of the theft of gold. He becomes purified from the sin of cohabitation with a woman of low caste. He is purified from the sins of wrong done to pi\u1e6d\u1e5bs, \u1e0devas, and men. Having given up all \u1e0dharmas, he becomes freed at once from all sins. He is at once released from all bondage. That he is at once released from all bondage is the Upanisha\u1e0d.\n130:1 This Upanisha\u1e0d treats of the means of crossing Kali completely: N\u0101ra\u1e0da having asked the question in \u1e0cv\u0101para yuga\u2014the third of the four yugas.\n130:2 N\u0101ra\u1e0da is called Kali-K\u0101raka or the generator of kali or strife and discord. If N\u0101ra\u1e0da is himself the strife-maker, why should he go to Brahma for the means of crossing Kali? N\u0101ra\u1e0da being himself an adjuster of the laws of karma, this Upanisha\u1e0d gives the means of getting over strife, etc., in this Kali-age when the whole of nature is thrown off its balance by the depraved tendencies of men. The jive, has sixteen kal\u0101s, corresponding to which sixteen man\u1e6dras or words are given.\n130:3 The story is that he was cursed by \u1e0caksha to roam over the worlds with a lute in his hand (viz., to adjust the laws of harmony).\n131:1 This number can be reached by uttering the man\u1e6dra completely within one year if uttered at the rate of a lakh per day: and within ten years if uttered at the rate of 10,000 per day; and within 100 years if uttered at the rate of 1,000 per diem.","title":"Thirty Minor Upanishads: 19.
