Thou art the\n hair-tuft on the head of Vishnu. I spread thee, wool-soft,\n good for Gods to sit on.\n Hail to the Earth's Lord! To the World's Lord Hail! Hail\n to the Lord of Beings!\n 3 For safety of this all let the Gandharva Visv\u00e2vasu lay thee\n round as a protection. Thou art the Sacrificer's guard,\n thou, Agni, lauded and worthy to receive laudation.\n Indra's right arm art thou. For safety . . . . . . laudation.\n For safety of This Ail, with firm law, northward let Mitra.\n Varuna lay thee round as keeper. Thou art the Sacrificer's\n guard . . . . . . laudation.\n 4 Thee, Sage, who offerest to Gods their banquet, we will\n enkindle till thou shinest brightly, thee mighty in the\n sacrifice, O Agni.\n5 Thou art a kindler. From the east let S\u00fbrya keep thee\n secure from every imprecation.\n You are the arms of Savitar. I spread thee as soft as wool,\n good for the Gods to sit on. On thee sit Vasus, Rudras,\n and \u00c2dityas!\n 6 Thou who art called Juh\u00fb art rich in fatness. On this dear\n seat, with the dear home, be seated.\n Thou, Upabhrit by name, art rich in fatness. On this . . . . . . . .\n be seated.\n Thou who art called Dhruv\u00e2, art rich in fatness. On this, etc.\n In the Law's lap they have sat down in safety\n Guard these. Guard thou the Sacrifice, O Vishnu. Keep\n thou the Sacrifice's Lord in safety.\n 7 O Agni, Winner of the Spoil, I cleanse thee, thee who wilt\n hasten to the spoil, Spoil-winner.\n Obeisance to the Gods! Svadh\u00e2 to Fathers! Be both of you\n easy for me to handle.\n 8 May I to-day offer Gods unspilt butter. Let me not with\n my foot offend thee, Vishnu.\n Agni, may I approach thy shade abounding in store of riches.\n Thou art Vishnu's mansion,\n Hence Indra wrought his deed of manly vigour. The sacrifice\n stood firmly elevated.\n9 O Agni, undertake the Hotar's office, take on thyself the\n duty of an envoy.\n Heaven and Earth guard thee! Guard thou Earth and Heaven.\n May Indra be, by this presented butter, maker to Gods of\n fair oblation. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! Let light combine with light.\n 10 Indra bestow on me that Indra-power! May wealth in full\n abundance gather round us. Let blessings wait on us,\n yea, real blessings.\n Our Mother, Earth, hath been invited hither. May Earth,\n our Mother, in return invite us. I, through my Kindlership,\n am Agni. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2!\n 11 The Father Heaven hath been invited hither. May Heaven\n the Father in return invite us.\n By impulse of God Savitar I receive thee with arms of\n Asvins, with the hands of P\u00fbshan. I feed upon thee\n with the mouth of Agni.\n 12 God Savitar, this sacrifice of thine have they proclaimed\n unto Brihaspati the Brahman Priest.\n Therefore protect the sacrifice, protect the sacrifice's lord,\n protect thou me.\n 13 The butter's rapid flow delight his spirit! Brihaspati extend\n this act of worship. May he restore the sacrifice uninjured.\n Here let all Gods rejoice. OM! Step thou forward.\n 14 This is the stick for kindling thee, O Agni. By means of\n this grow strong and swell to greatness. May we too grow\n in strength and swell to greatness.\n O Agni, thou who winnest food, I cleanse thee, thee who\n hast hastened to the food, Food-winner.\n15 After the victory of Agni Soma may I obtain the victory.\n By impulse of sacrificial food I speed me onward.\n May Agni-Soma drive off him who hates us, drive off the\n man whom we detest. By impulse of sacrificial food away\n I drive him.\n After the victory of Indra-Agni may I obtain the victory.\n By impulse of sacrificial food I speed me forward.\n May Indra-Agni . . . . . . I drive him.\n 16 For Vasus thee. For Rudras thee. Thee for \u00c2dityas.\n Be, Heaven and Earth, accordant with each other. With\n rain may Mitra-Varuna assist thee.\n May the birds go, licking what is anointed.\n Go to the Maruts\u2019 speckled mares. Go, having become a\n speckled cow thyself, to heaven, and from that place bring\n the rain for us hither.\n Thou art the eye's guard: guard mine eye, O Agni.\n I7 The stick which thou, God Agni, laidest round thee, what\n time thou wast kept hidden by the Panis, this do I bring\n to thee for thine enjoyment. May it remain with thee\n and ne\u2019er be fruitless.\n Approach, ye two, the place which Agni loveth.\n 18 The residue ye have to be your portion, mighty by food, ye\n Gods, ye who are stationed on the grass-bunch, and to be\n laid as fences.\n All ye, applauding this my speech, be seated on this grass-bunch\n and there be joyful. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! V\u00e2t!\n19 Rich in oil are ye. Guard the two yoke-fellows. Ye two\n are full of grace, to grace conduct me.\n Glory to thee, O Sacrifice, and increase! Stand firm in my\n auspicious, righteous worship.\n 20 O Agni of unweakened strength, far-reaching, protect me\n from the lightning-flash, protect me from bondage. from\n defect in sacrificing, from food injurious to health protect\n me.\n Make thou the food that feeds us free from poison in the\n home good to sit in. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! V\u00e2t!\n Hail to the Lord of close embracements, Agni! Hail to Sarasvat\u00ee\n enriched with glory!\n 21 Veda art thou, whereby, O godlike Veda, thou hast become\n for Deities their Veda: thereby mayst thou become for\n me a Veda.\n O Deities, ye knowers of the Pathway, walk on the pathway\n having known the Pathway.\n God, Lord of Spirit, hail! bestow upon the Wind this sacrifice.\n 22 Blest be the Grass with sacred food and butter. Let Indra\n be united with the \u00c2dityas, the Vasus, Maruts, and the\n Visvedevas. Let Sv\u00e2h\u00e2-offerings rise to heavenly ether.\n23 Who liberates thee from the yoke? He frees thee. For whom?\n For him he looses thee. For plenty.\n Thou art the R\u00e2kshasas\u2019 allotted portion.\n 24 We have combined with lustre, vigour, bodies; we have\n united with the bless\u00e8d spirit. May Tvashtar, bounteous\n giver, grant us riches, and clear each fault and blemish\n from the body.\n 25 By Jagat\u00ee metre in the sky strode Vishnu. Therefrom excluded \n is the man who hates us and whom we detest.\n By Trishtup metre in the air strode Vishnu. Therefrom, etc.\n By G\u00e2yatr\u00ee upon the earth strode Vishnu. Therefrom, etc.\n From this food From this resting-place excluded.\n We have reached heaven. We have combined with lustre.\n 26 Thou, noblest ray of light, art Self-existent. Giver art thou\n of splendour. Give me splendour.\n I move along the path that S\u00fbrya travels.\n 27 Agni, may I become a good householder, through thee,\n Home-master, O Householder Agni. Mayst thou become\n an excellent Householder through me the master of the\n house, O Agni.\n Through hundred winters may our household matters\u2014not\n like a one-ox car\u2014be smoothly managed.\n I move along the path that S\u00fbrya travels.\n 28 I have performed the vow, Lord of Vows, Agni! Full power\n was mine, and it has proved successful.\n Now am I he I truly am, no other.\n29 To Agni Hail! who bears gifts due to Sages. To Soma Hail!\n accompanied by Fathers.\n Expelled are Asuras and fiends who sate upon the covering\n grass.\n 30 The Asuras, attracted by oblation, who roam at will assuming\n varied figures, from this our world may Agni drive\n them, whether they clothe themselves in large or little\n bodies.\n 31 O Fathers, here enjoy yourselves. Come hither, like bulls,\n come each to his allotted portion.\n The Fathers have enjoyed themselves, and hither, like bulls,\n come each to his allotted portion.\n 32 Obeisance to your genial sap, O Fathers! Fathers, obeisance\n unto you for Ardour! Fathers, obeisance Onto you for\n Svadh\u00e2! Obeisance unto you for Life, O Fathers!\n Fathers, to you obeisance for the Awful! Fathers, obeisance\n unto you for Passion! O Fathers, unto you be adoration.\n Bestow upon us houses, O ye Fathers, what is ours, O\n Fathers, will we give you. With this your raiment clothe\n yourselves, O Fathers.\n 33 Fathers, bestow on me a babe, a boy enwreathed with\n lotuses, so that there may be here a man.\n34 Bearers of vigour and immortal fatness, milk and sweet beverage\n and foaming liquor, ye are a freshening draught.\n Delight my Fathers.","title":"White Yajur Veda: Book II","type":"page"}
