Griffith, [1899]\nDRIVE our born enemies away, O Agni; drive from us foes\n unborn, O J\u00e2tavedas.\n Graciously-minded, free from anger, bless us: may we enjoy\n my firm thrice-guarding shelter.\n Drive off with might our foemen born and living: keep off\n these yet unborn, O J\u00e2tavedas.\n Benevolent in thought and spirit bless us. May we remain\n alive: drive off our foemen.\n 3 The Sixteenfold Stoma, strength and wealth. The Forty-\n fourth Stoma, splendour and wealth.\n Apsas art thou, the complement of Agni. As such may all\n the Gods greet thee with praises.\n Enriched with songs of praise, Prishthas, and butter, sit here\n and give us wealth with store of children.\n 4 Course metre. Space metre. Spacious metre, Inaccessible metre. Slow metre.\n Ank\u00e2nka metre.\n6 With the ray for truth quicken thou truth. With advance\n by duty quicken duty. With following by heaven quicken\n heaven. With union by middle air quicken middle air.\n With Pratidhi by Earth quicken Earth. With support\n by rain quicken rain. With blowing away by day quicken\n day. With following by eight quicken night. With\n clarified butter by the Vasus quicken the Vasus. With\n perception by the \u00c2dityas quicken the \u00c2dityas.\n 7 With the thread by prosperity quicken prosperity. With\n the creeper by revelation quicken revelation. With\n refreshment by plants quicken plants. With the best by\n bodies quicken bodies. With the invigorating by religious\n study quicken religious study. With the victorious by\n brilliance quicken brilliance.\n 8 Thou art Pratipad, for Pratipad thee. Thou art Anupad,\n for Anupad thee. Thou art Sampad, for Sampad thee.\n Thou art brilliance, for brilliance thee.\n 9 Trivrit (triple) art thou, thee for Trivrit. Pravrit art thou,\n thee for Pravrit. Vivrit art thou, thee for Vivrit. Savrit\n art thou, thee for Savrit. Thou art attack, thee for attack.\n Thou art concurrence, thee for concurrence. Thou art\n ascent, thee for ascent. Thou art upstriding, thee for\n upstriding. With Energy as over-lord quicken\n food-essence.\n 10 Thou art the Queen, the Eastern region. The bright Vasus\n are thine overlords. Agni is thy warder-off of hostile\n weapons. May the Trivrit Stoma assist thee on earth.\n The \u00c2jya Uktha fix thee firmly against slipping. The\n Rathantara S\u00e2man establish thee in the sky for secure\n station. May the first-born Rishis extend thee among the\nGods by the measure and amplitude of heaven. May\n this Disposer and the Over-Lord extend thee. May all,\n concordant, settle thee on the ridge of heaven in the\n world of Svarga.\n 11 Thou art Far-ruling, the Southern region. The bright\n Rudras are thine over-lords. Indra is thy warder-off of\n arrows. May the Pa\u00f1chadasa Stoma support thee on\n earth. The Pra\u00fcga Uktha fix thee firmly against slipping.\n The Brihat S\u00e2man establish thee in the sky, etc. (the rest\n as in 10).\n 12 Thou art Universal Ruler, the Western region. The \u00c2dityas\n are thine over-lords. Varuna is thy warder-off of missiles.\n The Saptadasa Stoma support thee on earth. The Marutvat\u00eeya\n Uktha fix thee firmly against slipping. The\n Vair\u00fbpa S\u00e2man establish thee, etc. (as above).\n 13 Thou art Independent Ruler, the Northern region. (The\n rest is identical with 12, with the substitution of Maruts\n . . . Soma . . . .Vimsa Stoma . . . Nishkevalya Uktha. . . . Vair\u00e2ja\n S\u00e2man for the corresponding names).\n 14 Thou art Lady-Paramount, the Lofty region. (The rest as\n above, Visvedevas. . . Brihaspati . . .Trinava and Trayastrimsa\n Stomas . . .Vaisvadeva and M\u00e2ruta Ukthas . . . S\u00e2kvara and\n Raivata S\u00e2mans being substituted for the corresponding\n names.\n 15 This one in front, golden-tressed, with sunbeams; the leader\n of his host and his chieftain are Rathagritsa and Rathaujas,\n and Pu\u00f1jikasthal\u00e2: and Kratusthal\u00e2 his Apsarases.\n Biting animals are his weapon, homicide his missile weapon;\n to them be homage: may they protect us, may\n they have mercy upon us. In their jaws we place the\n man whom we hate and who hates us.\n16 This one on the right, the Omnific; the leader of his host\n and his chieftain are Rathasvana and Rathechitra, and\n Menak\u00e2 and Sahajany\u00e2 his Apsarases. Y\u00e2tudh\u00e2nas are\n his weapon, R\u00e2kshasas his missile weapon; to them be\n homage, etc. (as in 15).\n 17 This one behind, the All-comprising; the leader of his\n host and his chieftain are Rathaprota and Asamaratha,\n and Pramlochant\u00ee and Anumochlant\u00ee are his Apsarases.\n Tigers are his weapon, Serpents his missile weapon; to\n them be homage, etc.\n 18 This one on the left, Lord of uninterrupted riches; the\n leader of his host and his chieftain are T\u00e2rkshya and\n Arishtanemi, and Visv\u00e2ch\u00ee and Ghrit\u00e2chi his Apsarases.\n Water is his weapon, wind his missile weapon; to them\n be homage, etc.\n 19 This one above, Wealth-giver; the leader of his host and his\n chieftain are Senajit and Sushena, and Urvasi and P\u00fbrvachitti\n his Apsarases. Thundering is his weapon and lightning\n his missile weapon; to them be homage, etc.\n 20 Agni is head and height of heaven, the Master of the earth\n is he. He quickeneth the waters\u2019 seed.\n 21 This Agni is the Master of spoil thousandfold and\n hundredfold, the sapient one, the head of wealth.\n 22 Agni, Atharvan brought thee forth by rubbing from the\n lotus-leaf, the head of Visva, of the Priest.\n23 Guide of the rite art thou and of the region to which with\n thine auspicious teams thou tendest.\n Thy light-bestowing head to heaven thou liftest, making thy\n tongue oblation-bearer, Agni.\n 24 Agni is wakened by the people's fuel to meet the Dawn who\n cometh like a milch-cow.\n Like young trees shooting up on high their branches his\n flames are rising to the vault of heaven.\n 25 To him adorable, sage, strong and mighty we have sung\n forth our song of praise and homage.\n Gavishthira hath raised with prayer to Agni this laud\n far-reaching as the gold in heaven.\n 26 Here by ordainers was this God appointed first Invoker, best\n at worship, to be praised at rites;\n Whom Apnav\u00e2na and the Bhrigus caused to shine bright-coloured\n in the wood, spreading to every house.\n 27 The watchful Guardian of the people hath been born, Agni\n the very strong, for fresh prosperity.\n With oil upon his face, with high heaven-touching flame, he\n shineth splendidly, pure for the Bharatas.\n 28 Agni, Angirases discovered thee what time thou layest hidden,\n fleeing back from wood to wood.\n Thou by attrition art produced as conquering, might, and\n men, O Angiras, call thee the Son of Strength.\n 29 Offer to Agni, O my friends, your seemly food, your seemly\n praise;\n To him supremest o\u2019er the folk, the Son of Strength, the\n Mighty Lord.\n 30 Thou, mighty Agni, gatherest up all that is precious for thy\n friend:\n Bring us all treasure as thou art enkindled in libation's place.\n31 O Agni, loved of many, thou of fame most wondrous, in\n their homes\n Men call on thee whose hair is flame to be the bearer of\n their gifts.\n 32 With this my reverent hymn I call Agni for you, the Son.\n of Strength,\n Dear, wisest envoy, served with noble sacrifice, immortal\n messenger of all.\n 33 Immortal messenger of all, immortal messenger of all,\n His two red steeds, all-cherishing; he harnesseth: let him,\n well-worshipped, urge them fast.\n 34 Let him well-worshipped urge them fast, let him\n well-worshipped urge them fast.\n Then hath the sacrifice good prayer and happy end, and\n heavenly gift of wealth to men.\n 35 O Agni, thou who art the Lord of wealth in kine, the Son\n of Strength,\n Vouchsafe to us, O J\u00e2tavedas, high renown.\n 36 He, Agni, kindled, good and wise, must be exalted in our\n song:\n Shine, thou of many forms, shine radiantly on us.\n 37 O Agni, shining of thyself by night and when the morning\n breaks,\n Burn, thou whose teeth are sharp, against the R\u00e2kshasas.\n 38 May Agni, worshipped, bring us bliss, may the gift, Blessed\n One! and sacrifice bring bliss,\n Yea, may our praises bring us bliss.\n 39 Yea, may our praises bring us bliss. Show forth the mind\n that brings success in war with fiends, wherewith thou\n conquerest in fights:\n 40 Wherewith thou conquerest in fights. Bring down the many\n firm hopes of our enemies, and let us vanquish with thine\n aid.\n41 I value Agni, that good Lord, the home to which the kind\n return;\n Whom fleet-foot coursers seek as home, and strong enduring\n steeds as home. Bring food to those who sing thy praise.\n 42 \u2019Tis Agni whom we laud as good, to whom the milch-kine\n come in herds,\n To whom the coursers swift of foot, to whom our well-born\n princes come. Bring food to those who sing thy praise.\n 43 Thou, brilliant God, within thy mouth warmest both ladles\n of the oil.\n So fill us also in our hymns abundantly, O Lord of Strength.\n Bring food to those who sing thy praise.\n 44 Agni, with lauds this day may we bring thee that which\n thou lovest,\n Right judgment, like a horse, with our devotions.\n 45 For thou hast ever been the car-driver, Agni, of noble\n Strength, lofty sacrifice, and rightful judgment.\n 46 Through these our praises come thou to meet us, bright as\n the sunlight,\n O Agni, well-disposed, with all thine aspects.\n 47 Agni I hold as Herald, the munificent, the gracious Son of\n Strength who knoweth all that live, as holy singer knowing\n all;\n Lord of fair rites, a God with form erected, turning to the\n Gods,\n He, when the flame hath sprung forth from the sacred oil,\n the offered fatness, longeth for it with his glow.\n 48 O Agni, be our nearest Friend, be thou a kind deliverer and\n a gracious Friend.\n Come as good Agni, come as excellent and give us wealth\n most splendidly renowned.\n To thee then, O most bright, O radiant God, we come with\n prayer for happiness for our friends.\n49 With what devotion, winning light, the Rishis came, kindling\n Agni, to the Holy session,\n Even with that in heaven I stablish Agni whom men call\n him whose sacred grass is scattered.\n 50 Gods, let us follow him with wives beside us, with sons, with\n brothers, with our gold adornments,\n Grasping the sky up in the world of virtue, on the third\n height, the luminous realm of heaven.\n 51 This Agni mounted up to Speech's Centre, Lord of the\n Brave, observant, ever-active.\n Laid on the back of Earth, may he, resplendent, cast under\n foot those who would fight against us.\n 52 May this most manly Agni, strength-bestower, giver of thousands,\n shine with care that fails not.\n Resplendent in the middle of the water, make thine approach\n to the celestial mansions.\n 53 Make him go forth from all sides: meet, Approach ye. O\n Agni, make the paths for Godward travel.\n Making the Parents young with life's renewal, the out spun\n thread in thee have they extended.\n 54 Wake up, O Agni, thou, and keep him watchful. Wish and\n fruition, meet, and he, together.\n In this and in the loftier habitation be seated, All-Gods!\n and the Sacrificer.\n 55 Convey our sacrifice to heaven that it may reach the God\n with that\nWhereby thou, Agni, bearest wealth in thousands and all\n precious things.\n 6 56 This is thine ordered place of birth whence sprung to life\n thou shonest forth.\n Knowing this, Agni, rise thou up and cause our riches to\n increase.\n 57 Tapa, Tapasya, pair of Dewy Seasons: thou art, etc. (as\n in XIII. 25).\n 58 On the sky's back may Parameshthin lay thee, etc. (as in\n XIV. 14).\n Thy Lord is S\u00fbrya, etc. (as in XIV. 14).\n 59 Repeated from XII. 54.\n 60 Repeated from XII. 55.\n 61 Repeated from XII. 56.\n 62 Like a horse neighing, eager for the pasture, when he hath\n stepped forth from the great enclosure:\n Then the wind following blows upon his splendour, and,\n straight, the path is black which thou hast travelled.\n 63 In \u00c2yu's seat I set thee, in the shadow of the protector in\n the heart of Ocean,\n Thee luminous, bright with eyes, thee who illumest the sky,\n the earth, and air's broad realm between them.\n 64 On the sky's back may Parameshthin set thee, etc. (as in\n XIV. 12, substituting sky for air and S\u00fbrya for V\u00e2yu).\n 65 Thou art the measure of a thousand.
