Griffith, [1899]\nBIRTH PLACE of princely power art thou: centre art thou\n of princely power.\n Harm not thyself: do me no harm.\n 2 Varuna, Law's maintainer, hath sat down, etc., as in X. 27.\n Save me from death. Save me from lightning.\n 3 Thee, by the radiant Savitar's impulsion, with arms of\n Asvins, with the hands of P\u00fbshan,\n With leech-craft of the Asvins, I besprinkle for splendour,\n for the lustre of a Br\u00e2hman;\n With leech-craft of Sarasvat\u00ee, besprinkle for manly vigour\n and for food to feed thee;\n Besprinkle thee, by special power of Indra, for strength of\n body and for fame and glory.\n 4 Thou art Ka. Noblest Ka art thou. Thee for the state and\n rank of Ka.\n Sumangala! Susloka! Satyar\u00e2jan!\n 5 My head be grace, my mouth be fame, my hair and beard\n be brilliant sheen!\n My breath be King and deathlessness, mine eye Sole Lord,\n mine ear the Prince!\n 6 My tongue be bliss, my voice be might, my mind be wrath,\n my rage self-lord!\n Joys be my fingers, and delight my members, conquering\n strength my friend!\n7 Let my two arms be Indra's power, my hands be deed of\n manly might, my soul and breast be princely rule! neck\n 8 My ribs be royal government, my belly, shoulders, neck,\n and hips,\n Thighs, elbows, knees, the people, yea, my members universally!\n 9 My navel intellect, etc., etc. ... ... ... ...\n Duty am I in legs and feet, established King among the\n folk.\n 10 I take my stand on princely power and Kingship, on cows\n am I dependent, and on horses. on vital breath\n On members I depend, and on the body,\n dependent and on welfare, on heaven and earth and\n sacrifice dependent.\n 11 May Deities, eleven threes, the three and thirty bounteous\n Ones\n Whose House-Priest is Brihaspati, by impulse of bright\n Savitar, the Gods protect me with the Gods.\n 12 May the first Gods with the second,\n the second with the\n third, the third with Truth, Truth with Sacrifice, Sacrifice\n with sacrificial texts, sacrificial texts with S\u00e2mans,\n S\u00e2mans with praise-verses, praise-verses with fore and\n after-sentences. fore-sentences with inviting-texts,\n inviting-texts with Vashat-calls, Vashat calls with oblations,\n and oblations, fulfil my desires, Earth! All-hail!\n 13 My hair is effort and attempt, my skin is reverence and\n approach.\n My flesh is inclination, wealth my bone, my marrow reverence.\n 14 Gods, Deities, whatever fault of ours have stirred the wrath\n of Gods,\n May Agni set me free from that iniquity and all distress.\n 15 If in the day-time or at night we have committed acts of sin,\n May V\u00e2yu set me free from that iniquity and all distress.\n16 If when awake or in our sleep we have committed acts of\n sin,\n May S\u00fbrya set me free from that iniquity and all distress.\n 17 Each fault in village or in wild, company or corporeal sense,\n Each sinful act that we have done to S\u00fbdra or Arya, or to\n either's disadvantage, e\u2019en of that sin thou art the expiation.\n 18 Waters, Inviolable ones, etc. Said to be repeated from\n VI. 22.\n O ever-moving Cleansing Bath, etc. Repeated from III. 48.\n 19 Thy heart is in the flood, etc. Repeated from VIII. 25.\n To us let Waters, etc. Repeated from VI. 22.\n 20 As one unfastened from a stake, or cleansed by bathing\n after toil,\n As butter which the sieve hath purged, let water clean me\n from my sin.\n 21 Looking upon the loftier light above the darkness we have\n come\n To S\u00fbrya, God among the Gods, the light that is most excellent.\n 22 The waters I this day have sought, and to their essence\n have we come.\n Agni, come hither rich in milk, splendour and brilliancy\n bestow on me, and progeny and wealth.\n 23 A brand art thou: fain would we thrive. Fuel art thou\n and splendour: give me splendour.\n Earth comes again, the Dawn, the Sun. This Universe all\n comes again.\n May I possess Vaisv\u00e2nara's light, may I attain my vast desires.\n Earth! All-hail!\n24 O Agni, Master of the Vow, on thee I lay the kindling-\n stick.\n To the fast-vow and faith I come. I, consecrated, kindle\n thee.\n 25 Fain would I know that holy world where Deities with\n Agni dwell,\n Where priestly rank and princely power together in accordance\n move.\n 26 Fain would I know that holy world where want and languor\n are unknown,\n Where in complete accordance move Indra and V\u00e2yu side\n by side\n 27 Let thy shoot be united with his tendril, joint combine\n with joint.\n Imperishable sap for joy, thine odour be the Soma's guard!\n 28 They pour it out, they sprinkle it, they scatter it, they\n make it pure.\n In the brown Sur\u00e2's ecstasy he says What art thou? What\n art thou?\n 29 Indra, at morn accept our cake accompanied with grain and\n groats, with wheaten bread and hymns of praise.\n 30 To Indra sing the lofty hymn, Maruts? that slayeth Vritra\n best,\n Whereby the Holy Ones created for the God the radiant\n light that never dies.\n 31 Adhvaryu, on the straining cloth pour thou the Soma pressed\n with stones:\n Purify it for Indra's drink.\n 32 The Sovran Lord of living things, he upon whom the worlds\n depend,\n Mighty, the mighty's King\u2014by him I take thee, take thee\n on myself.\n33 Taken upon a base art thou. Thee for the Asvins. This is\n thy home, etc.\n 34 Guard of my breath and outward breath, the guardian of\n mine eye and ear,\n All-healer of my voice, thou. art the mollifier of my mind.\n 35 Invited I feed upon thee invited,\n Whom Asvins, whom Sarasvat\u00ee, whom Indra, Good Protector,\n made.\n 36 Kindred in forefront of the Mornings, Indra with forward\n light, long-active, waxing mighty,\n With three-and thirty Gods, the Thunder-wielder, smote.\n Vritra dead and threw the portals open.\n 37 Son of Himself, the Praise of Men, the hero, measuring out\n the sacrificial stations,\n Rich in bulls\u2019 fat, anointing with sweet butter, wise, bright\n with gauds of gold, he sacrificeth.\n 38 Lauded by Gods, Lord of Bay Steeds, the Helper, showing\n his greatness. worshipped with oblations.\n Fort-render, Cowpen-cleaver, Thunder-wielder, may he approach\n our sacrifice rejoicing\n 39 May Indra, Lord of Bays, sit by direction eastward on earth,\n accepting our oblation,\n And sacred grass, fair, far-spread, widely-stretching, anointed\n by \u00c2dityas and by Vasus.\n 40 To the strong Indra go the sounding Portals, dames with a\n goodly husband, swiftly moving!\n Well-manned, divine, wide be the Doors thrown open,\n expanding in their greatness fir the Hero!\n41 Dawn and Night, lofty, sapful, richly-yielding, fair-showing,\n as they weave with varied colour\n The long-extended thread in concert, worship the God of\n Gods, the lofty Hero Indra.\n 42 The two first pleasant-voiced celestial Hotars, arranging\n rites for man in sundry places,\n At head of sacrifice stablishing Indra, increase the eastern\n light with sweet oblation.\n 43 Thriving by sacrifice may the three Bright Ones, taking delight\n like wedded dames in Indra,\n Sarasvat\u00ee, Id\u00e2, Bh\u00e2rat\u00ee all-surpassing, with milk preserve\n our sacred thread unbroken.\n 44 May Tvashtar coming frail afar, the active, give strength\n and plenty to strong glorious Indra,\n And strong, prolific, worshipping, the Mighty at sacrifice's\n head give the Gods honour.\n 45 Let the divine Stake, like an Immolator, bind, as one\n ordered, to himself the victim,\n And, filling Indra's belly with ablations, season the sacrifice\n with sweets and butter.\n 46 Indra the Bull, swift conqueror, wildly rushing bull-like to\n meet the Indu of the droppings\u2014\n Delighting in a mind that scatters fatness, let the immortal\n Gods rejoice in Sv\u00e2h\u00e2.\n 47 May Indra come to us for our protection, here, lauded\n Hero, be our feast-companion.\n May he whose powers are many, waxen mighty, cherish,\n like Dyaus, the sovran sway of princes.\n 48 From near or far away may mighty Indra, giver of\n succour, come for our protection,\n Lord of men, armed with thunder, with the Strongest,\n slaying his foes in conflict, in the battles.\n49 May Indra come to us with Tawny Coursers, inclined to us,\n to favour and enrich us.\n May Maghavan, loud-voiced and wielding thunder, stand by\n us at this sacrifice, in combat.\n 50 Indra the Rescuer, Indra the Helper, Hero who listens at\n each invocation,\n Sakra I call, Indra invoked of many. May Indra, Bounteous\n Lord, prosper and bless us.\n 51 May helpful Indra as our Good Protector, Lord of all treasures,\n favour us with succour,\n Baffle our foes and give us rest and safety, and may we be\n the lords of hero vigour.\n 52 May we enjoy the grace of him the Holy, yea, may we dwell\n in his auspicious favour.\n May helpful Indra as our Good Preserver drive from us even\n from afar, our foemen.\n 53 Come hither, Indra, with Bay Steeds, joyous, with tails like\n peacock plumes,\n Let no men check thy course as fowlers stay the bird: pass\n o\u2019er them as o\u2019er desert lands.\n 54 Verily the Vasishthas hymn with praises Indra the mighty\n One whose arm wields thunder.\n Praised, may he guard our wealth in men and cattle. Ye\n Gods, preserve us evermore with blessings.\n 55 Fire hath been kindled, Asvins Twain! the Gharma warmed,\n the Radiant pressed,\n Here the Milch-Cow Sarasvat\u00ee hath poured bright Soma,\n Indra's own.\n 56 When Soma flows Sarasvat\u00ee and both the Asvins, Leeches\n and\n Body-guards, bear to Indra strength by passage through\n the realms of air.\n57 When Soma flowed the Asvins Twain, the Leeches, brought\n sweet medicine,\n With Men's Desire Sarasvat\u00ee for Indra, Soma, Nagnahu.\n 58 Worshipped, Sarasvat\u00ee bestowed on Indra, senses, manly\n power.\n The Asvins, through oblations paid, combined food, energy,\n and wealth.\n 59 The Asvins brought from Namuchi pressed Soma bright\n with foaming juice.\n Sarasvat\u00ee with sacred grass brought that to Indra for his\n drink.\n 60 Sarasvat\u00ee and Indra with the Asvins Twain milked out\n desires\n From heaven and earth, the regions, the resounding and\n expansive doors.\n 61 Ye Asvins, Dawn and Night, by day and in the evening, fair\n of hue,\n Accordant, with Sarasvat\u00ee, deck Indra with surpassing\n powers.\n 62 Guard us, O Asvins, through the day, guards us by night,\n Sarasvat\u00ee.\n Celestial Hotars, Leeches! both guard Indra when the juice\n is pressed.\n 63 The Asvins, and the Three, apart, Sarasvat\u00ee, Id\u00e2, Bh\u00e2rat\u00ee,\n As drink to gladden Indra, poured strong Soma with the\n foaming juice.\n 64 The Asvins, our Sarasvat\u00ee, and Tvashtar, when the juice\n was shed,\n Gave Indra balm, yea, mead as balm, glory and fame and\n many a shape.\n 65 Praising with foaming liquor at due times, Indra, Vanaspat\u00ee,\n Sarasvat\u00ee as cow gave forth sweet beverage with the Asvins\n Twain.\n 66 Asvins, to Indra ye with cows, with M\u00e2sara and foaming\n drink\n Gave, with Sarasvat\u00ee\u2014All hail!\u2014the pressed-out Soma juice\n and mead.\n67 The Asvins and Sarasvat\u00ee by wit from fiendish Namuchi\n Brought unto Indra sacred food, strength, brilliant treasure,\n ample wealth.\n 68 That Indra, strong through sacrifice by Asvins and Sarasvat\u00ee,\n Cleft Vala through to win him wealth, with Namuchi of\n Asura birth.\n 69 Supporting him in sacrifice with sacred food and mighty\n powers,\n Sarasvat\u00ee, both Asvins and the cattle hymned that Indra's\n praise.\n 70 Indra whom Bhaga, Savitar, and Varuna supplied with power,\n Lord of the sacrifice, may he, Good Guardian, love the worshipper.\n 71 Savitar, Varuna bestow gifts on the liberal offerer,\n Strength, power and treasure which the Good Protector took\n from Namuchi!\n 72 Varuna giving sway and power, Savitar grace with happiness,\n The Good Protector giving strength with fame, obtained\n the sacrifice.\n 73 With cows the Asvins, mighty power, with horses manly\n vigour, strength,\n With sacred food Sarasvat\u00ee, made Indra, Sacrificer, strong.\n 74 May those N\u00e2satyas, fair of form, the Men who ride on paths\n of gold,\n Oblation-rich Sarasvat\u00ee, thou, Indra! help us in our rites.\n 75 Those Leeches righteous in their deeds, She, rich in milk,\n Sarasvat\u00ee,\n That Vritra-Mayer hundred-powered, invested Indra with his\n might.\n 76 Ye Asvins and Sarasvat\u00ee, joint drinkers of the Sara draught,\n In Namuchi of Asura birth, give aid to Indra in his deeds.\n 77 As parents aid a son, etc., as in X. 34.\n 78 He in whom horses, bulls, oxen, and barren cows, and rams,\n when duly set apart, are offered up,\n To Agni, Soma-sprinkled, drinker of sweet juice, Disposer,\n with thy heart bring forth a pleasant hymn.\n79 Within thy mouth is poured the offering, Agni, as Soma into\n cup, oil into ladle.\n Vouchsafe us wealth, strength-winning, blest with heroes,\n wealth lofty, praised by men, and full of splendour.\n 80 The Asvins gave, with lustre, sight, Sarasvat\u00ee manly strength\n with breath.\n Indra with voice and might gave Indra vigorous power.\n 81 With kine, N\u00e2satyas! and with steeds, come, Asvins, Rudras!\n to the house, the sure protector of its men;\n 82 Such, wealthy Gods! as none afar or standing near to us\n may harm, yea, no malicious mortal foe.\n 83 Do ye, O longed-for Asvins, lead us on to wealth of varied\n form, wealth that shall bring us room and rest.\n 84 Wealthy in spoil, enriched with hymns, may pure Sarasvat\u00ee\n desire with eager love our sacrifice.\n S5 She who awakens sounds of joy, inspires our hymns, Sarasvat\u00ee,\n she hath allowed our sacrifice.\n 85 Sarasvat\u00ee, the mighty flood, she with her light illuminates,\n she brightens every pious thought.\n 87 O Indra, marvellously bright, come, these libations long for\n thee, thus by fine fingers purified.\n 88 Urged by the holy singer, sped by song, come, Indra, to the\n prayers of the libation-pouring priest.\n 89 Approach, O Indra, hasting thee, Lord of Bay Horses, to the\n prayer: in our libations take delight.\n 90 Accordant with Sarasvat\u00ee let the two Asvins drink the meath,\n May Indra, Vritra-slayer, Good Guardian, accept the Soma\n meath.","title":"White Yajur Veda: Book XX","type":"page"}
