Griffith, [1899]\nVARUNA, hear this call of mine: be gracious unto us this\n day.\n Longing for help I yearn for thee.\n 2 I ask this of thee with my prayer, etc., as in XVIII. 49.\n 3 Do thou who knowest Varuna, O Agni, put far away from\n us the God's displeasure.\n Best Sacrificer, brightest One, refulgent, remove thou far\n from us all those who hate us.\n 4 Be thou the nearest unto us, O Agni, our closest Friend\n while now this Morn is breaking.\n Reconcile Varuna to us, be bounteous: show thy compassion\n and be swift to hear us.\n 5 We call to succour us the mighty Mother of those whose\n sway is just, the Queen of Order,\n Strong-ruler, far-expanding, ne\u2019er decaying, Aditi gracious\n guide and good protectress.\n 6 Sinless may we ascend, for weal, this vessel rowed with\n good oars, divine, that never leaketh,\n Earth our strong guard, incomparable Heaven. Aditi gracious\n guide and good protectress.\n 7 May I ascend the goodly ship, free from defect, that leaketh\n not,\n Moved by a hundred oars, for weal.\n 8 O Mitra-Varuna, gracious Pair, with fatness dew our\n pasturage,\n With mead the regions of the air.\n9 Stretch forth your arms and let our lives be lengthened:\n with fatness dew the pastures of our cattle.\n Ye Youthful, make us famed among the people: hear,\n Mitra-Varuna, these mine invocations.\n 10 Bless us the Coursers when we call, etc., as in IX. 16.\n 11 Deep-skilled in Law, etc., as in IX. 18.\n 12 Kindled is Agni with the brand, yea, kindled well, the\n excellent.\n The metre G\u00e2yatr\u00ee, the steer of eighteen months, give power\n and life!\n 13 Tan\u00fbnap\u00e2t whose acts are pure, our bodies\u2019 guard Sarasvat\u00ee,\n Ushnih\u00e2 metre and the steer of two years\u2019 age give power\n and life!\n 14 Agni with offerings, meet for praise, and Soma the immortal\n God,\n Anushtup metre and the steer of thirty months give power\n and life!\n 15 Agni with goodly grass spread out, deathless with P\u00fbshan\n at his side,\n Brihat\u00ee metre and a steer of three years\u2019 age give power\n and life!\n 16 The Doors divine, the mighty Regions, Brahma, God\n Brihaspati,\n The metre Pankti, here a bull in his fourth year, give\n power and life\n 17 The two young Darns of lovely form, the deathless Universal\n Gods,\n The Trishtup metre, here, a bull in his sixth year, give\n power and life!\n 18 The two celestial Hotars, both Physicians, Indra's close-knit\n friends,\n The metre Jagat\u00ee, an ox who draws the wain, give power and\n life!\n 19 The Three, Ida, Sarasvat\u00ee, and Bh\u00e2rat\u00ee, the Marut folk,\n Vir\u00e2j the metre, here, a cow in milk, a bull, give power and\n life!\n20 Tvashtar the wondrous, full of seed, Indr\u00e2gn\u00ee furtherers of\n weal,\n Dvipad\u00e2 metre, and a cow and vigorous bull give power and\n life!\n 21 Our slaughterer, Vanaspat\u00ee, Savitar who promoteth wealth,\n The metre Kakup, here, a cow who casts her calf, give power\n and life!\n 22 With Sv\u00e2h\u00e2 mighty Varuna give healing power to Sacrifice!\n The Atichhandas, Brihat, and a steer and bull give power\n and life!\n 23 With the Spring Season may the Gods the Vasus praised\n with triple hymn\n And with Rathantara, give life to Indra, splendour, sacrifice.\n 24 With Summer may the Rudras, Gods, praised in the Pa\u00f1chadasa\n hymn\n With Brihat, give to Indra strength; with fame, and sacrifice\n and life.\n 25 May the \u00c2dityas with the Rains, lauded in Saptadasa\n hymn\n And with Vair\u00fbpa, with folk, strength, give Indra sacrifice\n and life.\n 26 With Autumn may the Ribhus, Gods, praised in the Ekavimsa\n hymn\n And with Vir\u00e2ja, give with grace to Indra grace, life,\n sacrifice.\n 27 With Winter may the Maruts, Gods, praised in the laud of\n thrice nine parts,\n The Sakvar\u00ees, with strength give might to Indra, sacrifice\n and life.\n28 With Dew-time may the deathless Gods praised in the\n Thirty-three-part laud,\n The Revat\u00ees, with truth give sway to Indra, sacrifice and\n life.\n 29 Let the Hotar sacrifice with fuel to Agni in the place of\n libation, to the Asvins, Indra, Sarasvat\u00ee. A grey-coloured\n he-goat with wheat, jujube-fruit and sprouts of rice\n becomes a sweet salutary remedy, splendour, might, milk,\n Soma. Let them enjoy sweet butter with foaming liquor.\n Hotar, present offerings of butter.\n 30 Let the Hotar, Tan\u00fbnap\u00e2t, worship Sarasvat\u00ee. A sheep,\n a ram, a salutary remedy on the honey-sweet path, bearing\n to the Asvins and Indra heroic strength, with jujube-fruit,\n Indra-grains, sprouts of rice, becomes a salutary\n remedy, milk, Soma. Let them enjoy, etc., as in verse 29.\n 31 Let the Hotar worship Nar\u00e2samsa and the Lord Nagnahu.\n A ram with Sur\u00e2 a salutary remedy, Sarasvat\u00ee the Physician,\n the golden car of the Asvins, the victim's omentum,\n with jujube-fruit, Indra-grains, and rice-sprouts, become\n a salutary remedy, the manly strength of Indra, milk,\n Soma. Let them, etc.\n 32 Let the Hotar, magnified with oblations, offering sacrifice,\n worship Sarasvat\u00ee and Indra, increasing them with\n strength, with a bull and a cow. Strength and medicine\n to the Asvins and Indra are meath with jujube-fruit,\n M\u00e2sara with parched grain, milk, Soma. Let them, etc.\n 33 Let the Hotar worship the wool-soft Altar-grass, the Physicians\n N\u00e2satyas, the Physicians Asvins. A mare with a\n foal, a milch-cow is a physician. Sarasvat\u00ee the Physician\n yields medicine to Indra, milk, Soma. Let them enjoy, etc.\n34 Let the Hotar worship the Doors, the Regions, the resounding,\n expansive Doors, the Regions, with the Asvins. Indra\n milks the two milky worlds. The Mulch-cow Sarasvat\u00ee\n yields medicine for the Asvins and Indra, pure light and\n strength. Milk, Soma. Let them, etc.\n 35 Let the Hotar worship the two fair-formed Dawns. At\n night and by day the Asvins with Sarasvat\u00ee compose\n impetuous power, like healing balm, in Indra, like a falcon,\n M\u00e2sara with light, thought, and grace. Milk, Soma. Let\n them enjoy, etc.\n 36 Let the Hotar worship the two divine Hotars, the Physician\n Asvins, and Indra. Watchfully by day and night Sarasvat\u00ee\n as Physician, with balms, with lead, yields strength\n and power. Milk, Soma. Let them enjoy, etc.\n 37 Let the Hotar worship the three Goddesses. The three active\n ones, with three sacrificial elements, lay balm and golden\n hue on Indra. The Asvins, Id\u00e2, Bh\u00e2rat\u00ee\u2014Sarasvat\u00ee with\n Speech yields might and power to Indra. Milk, Soma.\n Let them enjoy, etc.\n 38 Let the Hotar worship Tvashtar full of good seed, the Bull\n active for men, Indra, the Asvins, Sarasvat\u00ee the Physician.\n Vigour, speed, power, a fierce wolf as physician,\n fame with Sur\u00e2 is a medicine, M\u00e2sara with grace. Milk,\n Soma. Let them enjoy, etc.\n 39 Let the Hotar worship Vanaspat\u00ee the Immolator, the Lord\n of Hundred Powers, and awful Passion, the King, the\n Tiger, and the Asvins, with reverence. Sarasvat\u00ee the\n Physician yields wrath and power to Indra. Milk, Soma.\n Let them enjoy, etc.\n40 Let the Hotar worship Agni. Of the drops of clarified butter,\n Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! Of the fat, omentum, etc., severally, Sv\u00e2h\u00e2!\n Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! the goat for the Asvins. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! the ram for Sarasvat\u00ee.\n Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! the bull for Indra. To the Lion, to his might,\n power. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! Agni the salutary remedy. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! Soma,\n the power. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! Indra the Good Deliverer. Savitar,\n Varuna Lord of Physicians. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! Vanaspat\u00ee, beloved,\n food and medicine. Sv\u00e2h\u00e2! Gods who drink clarified\n butter. Agni accepting the medicine. Milk, Soma.\n Let them enjoy, etc.\n 41 Let the Hotar worship the Asvins with the omentum of a\n he-goat. Let them enjoy the fat. Hotar, offer the sacrificial\n oblation.\n Let the Hotar worship Sarasvat\u00ee with the omentum of a\n ram. Let her enjoy the fat. Hotar offer the sacrificial\n oblation.\n Let the Hotar worship Indra with the omentum of a bull.\n Let him, etc.\n 42 Let the Hotar worship the Asvins, Sarasvat\u00ee, Indra the\n Good Deliverer. These your Somas, pressed, rejoicing\n with goats, rams, bulls, giving pleasure with rice-shoots,\n young blades of corn, parched grain, joy-givers adorned\n with M\u00e2sara, bright, milky, immortal, presented, dropping\n honey. these let the Asvins, Sarasvat\u00ee, Indra the\n Good Deliverer, Vritra-slayer, accept. Let them drink,\n rejoice in, enjoy the Soma meath. Hotar, sacrifice.\n 43 Let the Hotar worship the Asvins. Let them eat of the\n he-goat, the sacrifice. Let them to-day eat the fat, taken\n from the middle, before those who hate us, before human\n handling. Yea, let them eat amid the fodder of fields\n fresh with moisture, with their expanse of barley, limbs\n of those tasted by Agni, belonging to the Hundred Rudras,\n portions covered with fat, from the sides, from the thighs,\n from the fore-feet from the chine. From every member\n of the divided victims these two make their repast. Thus\n let the Asvins accept. Hotar, offer the sacrificial oblation.\n44 Let the Hotar worship Sarasvat\u00ee. Let her approach the ram,\n the sacrifice.\n To-day let her eat, etc., the rest of verse 43 repeated mutatis mutandis.\n 43 Let the Hotar worship Indra, etc., as in 44 mutatis mutandis.\n 46 Let the Hotar worship Vanaspat\u00ee. He has held with a very\n well formed and very strong rope. There where the favourite\n stations of the Asvins are, of the he-goat the sacrifice;\n of Sarasvat\u00ee, of the ram the sacrifice; of Indra, of the\n bull the sacrifice; there where the favourite stations of\n Agni are, of Soma, of Indra the Good Deliverer, of Savitar,\n of Varuna, the favourite places of Vanaspat\u00ee, the\n favourite stations of Gods who drink clarified butter, and\n of Agni the Hotar, there let him arrange these victims\n when he has praised and lauded them, and perform when\n he has made them very strong. Let divine Vanaspat\u00ee\n accept. Hotar, offer oblation.\n 47 Let the Hotar worship Agni Svishtakrit. Let Agni worship\n the favourite stations of the Asvins, of the he-goat the\n sacrifice; of Sarasvat\u00ee, of the ram the sacrifice; of Indra,\n of the bull the sacrifice; there, etc., to 'butter' as in 46.\n Let him worship the favourite stations of Agni the Hotar.\n Let him worship his own majesty. Let him win for himself\n by sacrifice food worthy of sacrifice. Let him, Knower of\n Beings, perform the sacred rites. Let him accept the\n sacrificial food. Hotar, offer oblation.\n 48 The Grass divine, for the right Gods, Sarasvat\u00ee, the Asvins\n Twain,\n Give Indra splendour, with the Grass, sight of his eyes and\n mighty strength! For gain of wealth let them enjoy.\n Thou, Hotar, offer sacrifice.\n 49 The Doors, the Doors divine, the Two Asvins, Leeches,\n Sarasvat\u00ee\u2014\n May they give breath to Indra in his nostrils, and heroic\n strength.\n For gain of wealth, etc., as in verse 48.\n50 May Dawn and Night, the Goddesses, both Asvins, and\n Sarasvat\u00ee\n Lay, with both Dawns, strength, voice within Indra the\n Good Deliverer's mouth.\n For gain of wealth, etc.\n 51 Both nursing Goddesses, the Pair of Asvins, and Sarasvat\u00ee\n Have with both nurses given strength to Indra, fame, and\n power to hear.\n For gain of wealth, etc.\n 52 Bringers of strengthening sacrifice, both Goddesses,\n well-yielding cows,\n Sarasvat\u00ee, both Asvins, the Physicians, these are Indra's\n guards.\n Forth from their breasts by sacrifice they give him brilliant\n light and power.\n For gain of wealth, etc.\n 53 Both Gods, the Hotars of the Gods, the Asvins the\n Physicians and\n Sarasvat\u00ee with Vashat-calls, with the two Hotars have\n bestowed on Indra brilliant light and power, and planted\n wisdom in his heart.\n For gain of wealth, etc.\n 54 Goddesses three, three Goddesses\u2014Asvins, Id\u00e2, Sarasvat\u00ee\n In Indra's midmost navel have laid store of energy and\n power.\n For gain of wealth, etc.\n 55 God Nar\u00e2samsa, Indra thrice-protecting, whose car moves\n by Sarasvat\u00ee and Asvins\n May Tvashtar lay seed, deathless form in Indra, a fitting\n place of birth and mighty powers.\n For gain of wealth, etc.\n 56 God with the Gods, Vanaspat\u00ee of golden leaves and goodly\n fruit\n Ripens till Indra finds it sweet, with Asvins and Sarasvat\u00ee.\n 57 Strewn, soft as wool, in sacrifice, with Asvins and Sarasvat\u00ee,\n The sacred robe of water-plants be, Indra, a fair seat for thee!\n Together with the sacred grass limy they, for sovranty, bestow\n King Passion and great power on thee.\n For gain of wealth, etc.\n58 Let the God Agni Svishtakrit worship the Gods as is meet\n and right for each, the two Hotars, Indra, the Asvins,\n V\u00e2k with speech, Sarasvat\u00ee, Agni, Soma. Svishtakrit\n has been well worshipped, Indra Good Deliverer, Savitar,\n Varuna the Physician have been worshipped. The God\n Vanaspat\u00ee, the Gods who drink clarified butter have been\n well worshipped, Agni by Agni. Let the Hotar Svishtakrit\n give the Hotar fame, great power, energy, honour,\n Ancestral libation.\n 59 To-day this Sacrificer cooking viands, cooking sacrificial\n rice-cakes, binding a goat for the Asvins, a ram for Sarasvat\u00ee,\n a hull for Indra, pressing Sur\u00e2 and Soma juices for\n the Asvins, Sarasvat\u00ee, and Indra the Good Deliverer, has\n chosen Agni as Hotar.\n 60 To-day the divine Vanaspat\u00ee has done good service to the\n Asvins with a goat, to Sarasvat\u00ee with a ram, to Indra\n with a bull. They have eaten these from the marrow\n onwards, they have accepted the cooked viands, they have\n waxed strong with the rice-cakes. The Agnis, Sarasvat\u00ee,\n and Indra have drunk the Sur\u00e2 and Soma draughts.\n 61 Thee, to-day, O Rishi, Rishi's son, descendant of Rishis, hath\n this Sacrificer chosen for many collected, saying: This\n (Agni) shall win by sacrifice for me choice-worthy treasures\n among the Gods. O God, what gifts the Gods have\n given, these do thou desire and approve.
