Griffith, [1899]\nHORSE, hornless goat, Gomriga, these belong to Praj\u00e2pati.\n A black-necked goat, devoted to Agni, (is to be bound)\n in front to the forehead (of the horse); Sarasvat\u00ee's ewe\n below his jaws; two goats belonging to the Asvins, with\n marks on the lower parts of the body, to his fore-legs; a\n dark-coloured goat, Soma's and P\u00fbshan's, to his navel; a\n white and a black, sacred to Soma and Varna, to his sides;\n Tvashtar's two, with bushy tails, to his hind feet; V\u00e2yu's\n white goat to his tail; for Indra the Good Worker a cow\n who slips her calf; a dwarf belonging to Vishnu.\n 2 The red goat, the smoky-red, the jujube-red, these belong to\n Soma. The brown, the ruddy-brown, the parrot-brown,\n these are Varuna's. One with white ear holes, one with\n partly white, one with wholly white, belong to Savitar.\n One with fore feet white, partly white, wholly white,\n belongs to Brihaspati. She goats speckled, with small spots,\n with big spots, these belong to Mitra-Varuna.\n 3 The bright-tailed, the wholly bright-tailed, the jewel-tailed,\n these belong to the Asvins. The white, the white-eyed,\n the reddish, these are for Rudra Lord of Beasts. Long-eared\n goats are for Yama; proud ones for Rudra; cloud-coloured\n ones for Parjanya.\n4 Goats speckled, transversely speckled, upward speckled are\n for the Maruts. The reddish she-goat, the red-haired, the\n white, these belong to Sarasvat\u00ee. The goat with diseased\n ears, the short-eared, the red eared are Tvashtar's. The\n black-necked, the white-flanked, one with bright-coloured\n thighs belong to Indra and Agni. Those with black marks,\n small marks, large marks belong to Dawn.\n 5 Parti-coloured female victims belong to the All-Gods;\n red-coloured, eighteen mouths old to V\u00e2k; victims without\n distinguishing marks to Aditi; those of one same colour\n to Dh\u00e2tar; weaned kids sacred to the Consorts of the Gods.\n 6 Black-necked victims for Agni; white browed for the Vasus;\n red for Rudra; bright ones for the \u00c2dityas; cloud-coloured\n for Parjanya.\n 7 The tall goat, the sturdy, the dwarf, these are Indra-Vishnu's;\n the tall, the white fore-footed, the black-backed,\n Indra-Brihaspati's; parrot-coloured the V\u00e2jins\u2019; speckled\n Agni-Maruts\u2019; dark-coloured P\u00fbshan's.\n 8 Variegated, Indra-Agni's; two-coloured, Agni-Soma's; dwarf\n oxen, Agni-Vishnu's; barren cows, Mitra-Varuna's; partly\n variegated, Mitra's.\n 9 Black-necked ones, Agni's; brown, Soma's; white, V\u00e2yu's;\n undistinguished, Aditi's; self-coloured, Dh\u00e2tar's; weanlings,\n the Gods\u2019 Consorts\u2019.\n 10 Black ones for Earth; smoke-coloured for Firmament; tall\n ones for Sky; brindled ones for Lightning; blotched ones\n for Stars.\n 11 Smoke-coloured ones he sacrifices to Spring; white to\n Summer; black to the Rains; red ones to Autumn;\n speckled to Winter; reddish-yellow to the Dewy Season.\n 12 Calves eighteen months old to G\u00e2yatr\u00ee; steers of two and\n a half years to Trishtup; two year old steers to Jagat\u00ee;\n three year olds to Anushtup; four year olds to Ushnih.\n 13 Four year old steers to Vir\u00e2j; full grown bulls to Brihat\u00ee;\n strong bulls to Kakup; draught oxen to Pankti; milch-cows\n to Atichhandas.\n14 Black-necked victims sacred to Agni; brown to Soma; spotted\n to Savitar; weaned she-kids to Sarasvat\u00ee; dark-coloured\n goats to P\u00fbshan; speckled victims to the Maruts;\n many-coloured to the All-Gods; barren cows to Heaven\n and Earth.\n 15 Called contemporary, the dappled belong to Indra-Agni;\n black ones to Varuna; speckled to the Maruts; hornless\n he-goats to Ka.\n 16 To Agni foremost in place he sacrifices firstling goats; to\n the consuming Maruts those born of one mother; to the\n Maruts who perform domestic rites those born after a long\n time; to the sportive Maruts those born together; to the\n self-strong Maruts those born in succession.\n 17 Called contemporaneous, the dappled belonging to Indra-Agni;\n those with projecting horns to Mahendra; the many-coloured\n to Visvakarman.\n 18 Smoke-coloured, those of brownish hue, to be offered to the\n Soma-possessing Fathers; the brown and the smoky-looking\n to the Fathers who sit on sacred grass; the black and\n the brownish-looking to the Fathers who have been tasted\n by Agni; the black and the spotted belong to Tryambaka.\n 19 Called contemporaneous, the dappled belong to Suna and\n S\u00eera; white ones to V\u00e2yu; white ones to S\u00fbrya.\n 20 To Spring he offers Kapi\u00f1jalas; to Summer sparrows; to\n the Rains partridges; to Autumn quails; to Winter.\n Kakaras; to the Dewy Season Vikakaras.\n 21 To the Sea he sacrifices porpoises; to Parjanya frogs; to\n the Waters fishes; to Mitra Kul\u00eepayas; to Varuna crocodiles.\n22 To Soma he sacrifices wild geese; to V\u00e2yu female cranes;\n to Indra-Agni curlews; to Mitra divers; to Varuna\n Chakrav\u00e2kas.\n 23 To Agni he sacrifices cocks; to Vanaspatis owls; to Agni-Soma\n blue jays; to the Asvins peacocks; to Mitra-Varuna\n pigeons.\n 24 To Soma he sacrifices quails; to Tvashtar Kaul\u00eekas; Mainas\n to the Gods\u2019 Consorts; Kul\u00eekas to the Gods\u2019 Sisters;\n P\u00e2rushnas to Agni Lord of the Homestead.\n 25 To Day he sacrifices doves; to Night S\u00eech\u00e2p\u00fbs; to the Joints\n of Day and Night bats; to the Months gallinules; to the\n Year great eagles.\n 26 To Ground he sacrifices rats; to Firmament field-rats; to\n Day voles; to the Quarters mungooses; to the Intermediate\n Spaces brownish ichneumons.\n 27 To the Vasus he sacrifices black-bucks; to the Rudras stags;\n to the \u00c2dityas Nyanku deer; to the All-Gods spotted deer;\n to the S\u00e2dhyas Kulinga antelopes,\n 28 To \u00ces\u00e2na he sacrifices wild asses; to Mitra Gauras; to Varuna\n buffaloes; to Brihaspati Gayals; to Tvashtar camels.\n 29 To Praj\u00e2pati he sacrifices men elephants; to V\u00e2k white ants;\n to Sight flies; to Hearing black bees.\n 30 To Praj\u00e2pati and to V\u00e2yu a Gayal is to be offered; to Varuna\n a wild ram; to Yama a black ram; to a human king a\n monkey; to the Tiger a red doe; to the Bull a female\n Gayal, to the Kshiprasyena a quail; to the Nilangu a\n worm; to the Sea a porpoise; to the Snowy Mountain an\n elephant.\n31 The Kinnara belongs to Praj\u00e2pati; the Ula, the Halikshna,\n the cat belong to Dh\u00e2tar; the heron belongs to the Quarters;\n the Dhunksh\u00e2 to Agni; sparrow, red snake, S\u00e2ras,\n these are Tvashtar's; the curlew belongs to V\u00e2k.\n 32 To Soma an antelope is to be offered; wild goat, mungoose,\n Sak\u00e2. these are P\u00fbshan's; the jackal is the M\u00e2yu's; the\n Gaura Indra's; Pidva, antelope, cock, these are Anumati's;\n the Chakrav\u00e2ka is for Echo.\n 33 The female crane is S\u00fbrya's; S\u00e2rga, Srijays, Say\u00e2ndaka,\n these are Mitra's; to Sarasvat\u00ee belongs the human-voiced\n Maina; to Ground the porcupine; tiger, wolf, viper belong\n to Passion; to Sarasv\u00e2n the human-voiced parrot.\n 34 The eagle is Parjanya's; the \u00c2ti, the V\u00e2hasa, the wood-pecker,\n these are for V\u00e2yu; for Brihaspati Lord of Speech\n is the Paingar\u00e2ja; the Alaja belongs to Firmament;\n pelican, cormorant, fish, these belong to the Lord of Rivers;\n the tortoise belongs to Heaven and Earth.\n 35 The book belongs to the Moon; iguana, K\u00e2lak\u00e2, woodpecker,\n these belong to the Vanaspatis; the cock belongs to Savitar;\n the swan is V\u00e2ta's; crocodile, dolphin, Kul\u00eepaya,\n these belong to the Sea; the porcupine to Modesty.\n 36 The Black-doe belongs to Day; frog, female rat, partridge,\n these belong to the Serpents; the jackal belongs to the\n Asvins; the Black-buck to Night; bear, bat, Sushilik\u00e2,\n these belong to the Other Folk (i.e. fairies--JBH); the polecat belongs to\n Vishnu.\n37 The cuckoo belongs to the Half Months; antelope, peacock,\n eagle, these are the Gandharvas\u2019; the otter belongs to\n the Months; tortoise, doe-antelope, iguana, Golathik\u00e2\n belong to the Apsarases; the black snake belongs to Death.\n 38 The frog belongs to the Seasons; the vole, the rat, the mouse,\n these are the Fathers\u2019; the Python, the Bal\u00e2va belong to\n the Vasus; Kapi\u00f1jala, pigeons owl, hare belong to Nirriti;\n the wild ram to Varuna.\n 39 The white animal belongs to the \u00c2dityas; the camel, the\n Ghrint\u00eev\u00e2n, the rhinoceros to Mati; the Srimara belong to\n the Forest-God; the Raru buck is Rudra's; Kvayi, cock,\n gallinule, these are the V\u00e2jins\u2019; the cuckoo belongs to\n K\u00e2ma.\n 40 The Khanga is the All-Gods'; the black dog, the long eared,\n the ass, the hyena, these are the R\u00e2kshasas; the boar is\n for Indra; the lion is for the Maruts; the chameleon,\n the Pipoaka, the vulture, these belong to Saravy\u00e2;
