I am the Truth!\n we hear the God-drunk gnostic cry\n The microcosm abides in ME;\n Eternal Allah's nought but I!\nMans\u00fbr[1] was wise, but wiser they\n who smote him with the hurl\u00e8d stones;\n And, though his blood a witness bore,\n no wisdom-might could mend his bones.\n[1. A famous Mystic stoned for blasphemy.]\n{p. 16}\n\"Eat, drink, and sport; the rest of life's\n not worth a fillip,\" quoth the King;\n Methinks the saying saith too much:\n the swine would say the selfsame thing!\nTwo-footed beasts that browse through life,\n by death to serve as soil design'd,\n Bow prone to Earth whereof they be,\n and there the proper pleasures find:\nBut you of finer, nobler, stuff,\n ye, whom to Higher leads the High,\n What binds your hearts in common bond\n with creatures of the stall and sty?\nIn certain hope of Life-to-come\n I journey through this shifting scene\n The Z\u00e2hid[1] snarls and saunters down\n his Vale of Tears with confi'dent mien.\nWiser than Amr\u00e2n's Son[2] art thou,\n who ken'st so well the world-to-be,\n The Future when the Past is not,\n the Present merest dreamery;\n[1.
