Forms, nothing more!\n Forms fill the brightest, strongest eye,\n We know not substance; 'mid the shades\n shadows ourselves we live and die.\n\"Faith mountains move\" I hear:\n I see the practice of the world unheed\n The foolish vaunt, the blatant boast\n that serves our vanity to feed.\n\"Faith stands unmoved;\" and why?\n Because man's silly fancies still remain,\n And will remain till wiser man\n the day-dreams of his youth disdain.\n\"'Tis bless\u00e8d to believe;\" you say:\n The saying may be true enow\n And it can add to Life a light:--\n only remains to show us how.\nE'en if I could I nould believe\n your tales and fables stale and trite,\n Irksome as twice-sung tune that tires\n the dull\u00e8d ear of drowsy wight.\n{p. 43}\nWith God's foreknowledge man's free will!\n what monster-growth of human brain,\n What powers of light shall ever pierce\n this puzzle dense with words inane?\nVainly the heart on Providence calls,\n such aid to seek were hardly wise\n For man must own the pitiless Law\n that sways the globe and sevenfold skies.\n\"Be ye Good Boys, go seek for Heav'en,\n come pay the priest that holds the key;\"\n So spake, and speaks, and aye shall speak\n the last to enter Heaven,--he.\nAre these the words for men to hear?\n yet such the Church's general tongue,\n The horseleech-cry so strong so high\n her heav'enward Psalms and Hymns among.\nWhat? Faith a merit and a claim,\n when with the brain 'tis born and bred?\n Go, fool, thy foolish way and dip\n in holy water buri\u00e8d dead!\n{p. 44}\nYet follow not th' unwisdom-path,\n cleave not to this and that disclaim;\n Believe in all that man believes;\n here all and naught are both the same.\nBut is it so?
