Edward Fitzgerald, [1904]\nWhen by and bye The Shah was made aware\n Of that Soul-wasting absence of his Son,\n He reach\u2019d a Cry to Heav\u2019n\u2014his Eyelashes\nWept Blood\u2014Search everywhere he set a-foot,\n But none could tell the hidden Mystery.\n Then bade he bring a Mirror that he had,\n A Mirror, like the Bosom of the Wise,\n Reflecting all the World, and lifting up\n The Veil from all its Secret, Good and Evil.\n That Mirror bade he bring, and, in its Face\n Looking, beheld the Face of his Desire.\n He saw those Lovers in the Solitude,\n Turn\u2019d from the World, and all its ways, and People,\n And looking only in each other's Eyes,\n And never finding any Sorrow there.\n The Shah beheld them as they were, and Pity\n Fell on his Eyes, and he reproach\u2019d them not;\n And, gathering all their Life into his hand,\n Not a Thread lost, disposed in Order all.\n Oh for the Noble Nature, and Clear Heart,\n That, seeing Two who draw one Breath, together\n Drinking the Cup of Happiness and Tears\n Unshatter\u2019d by the Stone of Separation,\n Is loath their sweet Communion to destroy,\n Or cast a Tangle in the Skein of Joy.\nThe Arrows that assail the Lords of Sorrow\n Come from the Hand of Retribution.\n Do Well, that in thy Turn Well may betide Thee;\nAnd turn from Ill, that Ill may turn beside Thee.\nThen the Fire of Jealous Frenzy\n Caught and carried up the Harvest\n Of the Might of Kai Khusrau.\nPlotting with that ancient Hag\n Of Fate, the Sculptor's Cup he poison\u2019d,\n And remained the Lord of Love.\nSo\u2014But Fate that Fate avenges\n Arms Shir\u00faeh with the Dagger,\n That at once from Sh\u00edr\u00edn tore him,\n Hurl\u2019d him from the Throne of Glory.","title":"Salaman and Absal: Sal\u00e1m\u00e1n and Abs\u00e1l: XX","type":"page"}
