[5] and the\n \u00a0\u00a0mountains shall crumble, crumbling, and become\n \u00a0\u00a0like motes dispersed!\n And ye shall be three sorts;\n And the fellows of the right hand--what right lucky fellows!\n And the fellows of the left hand--what unlucky fellows!\n[10] And the foremost\u00a0foremost\u00a01!\n These are they who are brought nigh,\n In gardens of pleasure!\n A crowd of those of yore,\n And a few of those of the latter day!\n [15] And gold-weft couches, reclining on them face to face.\n Around them shall go eternal youths, with goblets\n \u00a0\u00a0and ewers and a cup of flowing wine; no headache\n \u00a0\u00a0shall they feel therefrom, nor shall their wits be dimmed!\n [20] And fruits such as they deem the best;\n And flesh of fowl as they desire;\n And bright and large-eyed maids like hidden pearls;\n A reward for that which they have done!\n They shall hear no folly there and no sin;\n [25] Only the speech, 'Peace, Peace!'\n And the fellows of the right--what right lucky fellows!\n Amid thornless lote trees.\n And tal\u2018h\u00a02 trees with piles of fruit;\n And outspread shade,\n [30] And water out-poured;\n And fruit in abundance, neither failing nor forbidden;\n And beds upraised!\n Verily, we have produced them\u00a03 a production.\n [35] And made them virgins, darlings of equal age\n \u00a0\u00a0(with their spouses) for the fellows of the right!\nA crowd of those of yore, and a crowd of those of the latter day!\n [40] And the fellows of the left--what unlucky fellows!\n In hot blasts and boiling water;\n And a shade of pitchy smoke,\n Neither cool nor generous!\n Verily, they were affluent ere this, [45] and did persist\n \u00a0\u00a0in mighty crime; and used to say, 'What, when we\n \u00a0\u00a0die and have become dust and bones, shall we\n \u00a0\u00a0then indeed be raised? or our fathers of yore?'\n Say, 'Verily, those of yore and those of the latter\n \u00a0\u00a0day [50] shall surely be gathered together unto\n \u00a0\u00a0the tryst of the well-known day.'\n Then ye, O ye who err! who say it is a lie! shall\n \u00a0\u00a0eat of the Zaqq\u00fbm tree! and fill your bellies with\n \u00a0\u00a0it! and drink thereon of boiling water! [55] and\n \u00a0\u00a0drink as drinks the thirsty camel.\n This is their entertainment on the judgment day!\n We created you, then why do ye not credit?\n Have ye considered what ye emit?\n Do we create it, or are we the creators?\n [60] We have decreed amongst you death; but we\n are not forestalled from making the likes of you\n in exchange, or producing you as ye know not of.\n Ye do know the first production-why then do ye not mind?\n Have ye considered what ye till?\n Do ye make it bear seed, or do we make it bear seed?\n [65] If we pleased we could make it mere grit, so that\n ye would pause to marvel:\n 'Verily, we have got into debt\u00a01 and we are excluded\u00a02.'\nHave ye considered the water which ye drink?\n Do ye make it come down from the clouds, or do\n \u00a0\u00a0we make it come down?\n If we pleased we could make it pungent--why then\n \u00a0\u00a0do ye not give thanks?\n [70] Have ye considered the fire which ye strike?\n Do ye produce the tree that gives it\u00a01, or do we produce it?\n We have made it a memorial and a chattel for the traveller of the waste?\n Then celebrate the grand name of thy Lord!\n So I will not swear by the positions of the stars;\n \u00a0\u00a0[75] and, verily, it is a grand oath if ye did but\n \u00a0\u00a0know--that, verily, this is the honourable Qur\u2019\u00e2n\n \u00a0\u00a0--in the laid-up Book!\n Let none touch it but the purified!\n A revelation from the Lord of the worlds.\n [80] What! this new discourse will ye despise?\n And make for your provision, that you call it a lie?\n Why then--when it\u00a02 comes up to the throat, and ye\n \u00a0\u00a0at that time look on, though we are nearer to him\n \u00a0\u00a0than you are, but ye cannot see,--[85] why, if ye\n \u00a0\u00a0are not to be judged, do ye not send it back, if\n \u00a0\u00a0ye do tell the truth?\n But either, if he be of those brought nigh to\n \u00a0\u00a0God,--then rest and fragrance and the garden of pleasure!\n Or, if he be of the fellows of the right! [90] then\n \u00a0\u00a0'Peace to thee!' from the fellows of the right!\nOr, if he be of those who say it is a lie,--who err!\n \u00a0\u00a0then an entertainment of boiling water! and broiling in hell!\n [95] Verily, this is surely certain truth!\n So celebrate the grand name of thy Lord!\n262:1 I.e. the day of judgment.\n263:1 I.e. the foremost in professing the faith on earth shall be the foremost then.\n263:2 The mimosa gummifera is generally so called in Arabia; but the banana is said to be meant in this passage.\n263:3 The celestial damsels.\n264:1 I.e. for seed and labour.\n264:2 From reaping the fruits of it.\n265:1 The ancient Arabs produced fire by the friction of a stick in a hollow piece of wood.
