Abandon gold and women,\n For they are a source of anxiety.\nTHE traveller on the path,\n \u2019Tis he who knows from whence he cometh;\n Then doth he journey hastily,\n Becoming as pure from self as fire from smoke.\n Unfolded to him are a series of revelations\n From the beginning. Till he is led away\n From darkness and sin.\n He now retraces stage by stage his steps\n Till he reaches his goal the Perfect.\n Thus is the perfect man evolved\n From the time he first exists\n As inorganic matter,\nNext a breath of spirit, and he is living\n And from God draws his motive powers.\n Next the Truth makes him lord of his will,\n As in childhood his discernment of the world unfolds.\n And now the world's temptations assail him.\n. . . Anger appears and desires of the flesh,\n And then avarice, pride, and gluttony;\n His nature becomes evil,\n Worse than an animal or demon;\n Now is he at the lowest point of all,\n The point opposite to Unity.\n. . . Should he remain fettered in this snare,\n He goes further astray than the beasts;\n But if there shines a light from the spirit world,\n Divinely attractive,\n Or if he can find a reflection of proof,\n Then will his heart respond in a feeling of kinship\n To this Light of the Truth,\n And he will turn back and retrace his steps\n From whence he came.\n To faith assured he has found his way\n Through certain proof, or the wonder\n And attraction of the Divine,\n. . . He throws away his selfhood utterly\n And ascends in the steps of the most Pure.\nTHOUGH the world is yours, you remain dejected,\n Who so pitiable as you?\nYou, who are a man, arise and pass on,\n Wait not day or night at the halting-stages,\n Tarry not behind your fellow-travellers and the caravans.\nTHE journey of the pilgrims is two steps and no more:\n One is the passing out of selfhood,\n And one towards mystical Union with the Friend.\nAs the Arab racer needs not the whip,\n So you will not need to fear\n When on your journey you have started.\nWhen purified are your soul and body,\n You will not fear the fires of hell.\n Throw pure gold into the fire;\n If it contains no alloy, what is there to burn?\nIF God guides you not into the road,\n It will not be disclosed by logic.\nLogic is a bondage of forms;\n A road that is long and hard.\n Leave it for a season. Like Moses\n Cast away that staff\n And enter for awhile \"The Valley of Peace.\"\nTHE young infant in the cradle\n Stays at his mother's side,\n But when he is grown manly\n He goes forth with his father.\nSo you remain with your mother,\n The fleshly elements,\n Until you join your Father up on high.\nAs the kernel of an almond is spoilt utterly\n If it is plucked from its husk while unripe,\n So error in the path of the pilgrim\n Spoils the kernel of his soul.\n When the knower is divinely illumined,\n The kernel ripens, bursts the husk,\n And departs, returning no more.\n But another retains the husk,\n Though shining as a. bright sun,\n And makes another circuit.\n From water and earth springs up into a tree,\n Whose high branches are lifted up to heaven;\n Then from the seed of this tree\n A hundredfold are brought forth.\n Like the growth of a seed into the line of a tree,\n From point comes a line, then a circle;\n When the circuit of this circle is complete,\n Then the last is joined to the first.\nYou are plurality transformed into Unity,\n And Unity passing into plurality;\n This mystery is understood when man\n Leaves the part and merges in the Whole.","title":"The Secret Rose Garden: Part IV.
