When the ears first hear these words\n They seem to denote sensual objects.\n But as there is no language for the Infinite,\n How can we express its mysteries\n In finite words?\n Or how can the visions of the ecstatic\n Be described in earthly formula?\n So mystics veil their meanings\n In these shadows of the unseen,\n The objects of the senses.\n. . . As a nurse to an infant,\n So is the Infinite to the finite.\n. . . Once these words were used in their proper sense,\n But now are concealed lest the vulgar should profane.\nAnnihilation, intoxication, the fever of love\n Are the three states of the mystic,\n And those who abide in these states\n At once comprehend the meanings\n Veiled in the words.\n But if you know them not,\n Pretend not you understand like an ignorant infidel,\n For all cannot be mystics or grasp the mysteries.\n No mere illusions are the mystic's dreams,\n And a man of truth does not vainly talk.\n To comprehend requires revelations or great faith.\nBriefly have I explained these words and their meanings\n So that you may apply them in their right intent,\n Remembering the attributes of each.\n Compare them in a right manner,\n And refrain from the wrong comparisons.\nNow that these rules are understood\n I will show you more of their application.\nYOUR eye has not strength enough\n To gaze at the burning sun,\n But you can see its brilliant light\n By watching its reflection\n Mirrored in the water.\nSo the reflection of Absolute Being\n Can be viewed in this mirror of Not-Being,\n For non-existence, being opposite Reality,\n Instantly catches its reflection.\nKnow the world from end to end is a mirror;\n In each atom a hundred suns are concealed.\n If you pierce the heart of a single drop of water,\n From it will flow a hundred clear oceans;\n If you look intently at each speck of dust,\n In it you will see a thousand beings,\n A gnat in its limbs is like an elephant;\n In name a drop of water resembles the Nile,\n In the heart of a barley-corn is stored an hundred harvests,\n Within a millet-seed a world exists,\n In an insect's wing is an ocean of life,\nA heaven is concealed in the pupil of an eye,\n The core in the centre of the heart is small,\n Yet the Lord of both worlds will enter there.\nBLACKEN the back of a mirror\n And it will reflect your face,\n So the dust of the earth reflects\n The rays of the sun in the seventh heaven.\nHOLD up a mirror before you\n And gaze on that other person.\n. . .
