A. L. M.\n2. This is the Book;\n In it is guidance sure, without doubt,\n To those who fear God;\n3. Who believe in the Unseen,\n Are steadfast in prayer,\n And spend out of what We\n Have provided for them;\n4. And who believe in the Revelation\n Sent to thee,\nAnd sent before thy time,\n And (in their hearts)\n Have the assurance of the Hereafter.\n5. They are on (true) guidance,\n From their Lord, and it is\n These who will prosper.\n6. As to those who reject Faith,\n It is the same to them\n Whether thou warn them\n Or do not warn them;\n They will not believe.\n7. God hath set a seal\n On their hearts and on their hearing,\n And on their eyes is a veil;\n Great is the penalty they (incur).\n8. Of the people there are some who say:\n \"We believe in God and the Last Day;\"\n But they do not (really) believe.\n9. Fain would they deceive\n God and those who believe,\n But they only deceive themselves,\n And realize (it) not!\n10. In their hearts is a disease;\nAnd God has increased their disease:\n And grievous is the penalty they (incur),\n Because they are false (to themselves).\n11. When it is said to them:\n \"Make not mischief on the earth,\"\n They say: \"Why, we only\n Want to make peace!\"\n12. Of a surety, they are the ones\n Who make mischief,\n But they realize (it) not.\n13. When it is said to them:\n \"Believe as the others believe:\"\n They say: \"Shall we believe\n As the fools believe?\"\n Nay, of a surety they are the fools,\n But they do not know.\"\n14. When they meet those who believe,\n They say: \"We believe;\"\n But when they are alone\n With their evil ones,\n They say: \"We are really with you:\n We (were) only jesting.\"\n15. God will throw back\n Their mockery on them,\n And give them rope in their trespasses;\n So they will wander like blind ones\n (To and fro).\n16. These are they who have bartered\n Guidance for error:\nBut their traffic is profitless,\n And they have lost true direction,\n17. Their similitude is that of a man\n Who kindled a fire;\n When it lighted all around him,\n God took away their light\n And left them in utter darkness.\n So they could not see.\n18. Deaf, dumb, and blind,\n They will not return (to the path).\n19. Or (another similitude)\n Is that of a rain-laden cloud\n From the sky: in it are zones\n Of darkness, and thunder and lightning:\n They press their fingers in their ears\n To keep out the stunning thunder-clap,\n The while they are in terror of death.\n But God is ever round\n The rejecters of Faith!\n20. The lightning all but snatches away\n Their sight; every time the light\n (Helps) them, they walk therein,\n And when the darkness grows on them,\n They stand still.\n And if God willed, He could take away\n Their faculty of hearing and seeing;\n For God hath power over all things\n21. O ye people!\n Adore your Guardian-Lord,\n Who created you\n And those who came before you,\n That ye may have the chance\n To learn righteousness;\n22. Who has made the earth your couch,\n And the heavens your canopy;\n And sent down rain from the heavens;\n And brought forth therewith\n Fruits for your sustenance;\n Then set not up rivals unto God\n When ye know (the truth).\n23. And if ye are in doubt\n As to what We have revealed\n From time to time to Our servant,\n Then produce a S\u016bra\n Like thereunto;\n And call your witnesses or helpers\n (If there are any) besides God,\n If your (doubts) are true.\n24. But if ye cannot\n And of a surety ye cannot\u2014\n Then fear the Fire\n Whose fuel is Men and Stones,\u2014\n Which is prepared for those\nWho reject Faith.\n25. But give glad tidings\n To those who believe\n And work righteousness,\n That their portion is Gardens,\n Beneath which rivers flow.\n Every time they are fed\n With fruits therefrom,\n They say: \"Why, this is\n What we were fed with before,\"\n For they are given things in similitude;\n And they have therein\n Companions pure (and holy);\n And they abide therein (for ever).\n26. God disdains not to use\n The similitude of things,\n Lowest as well as highest.\nThose who believe know\n That it is truth from their Lord;\n But those who reject Faith say:\n \"What means God by this similitude?\"\n By it He causes many to stray,\n And many He leads into the right path;\n But He causes not to stray,\n Except those who forsake (the path),\u2014\n27. Those who break God's Covenant\n After it is ratified,\n And who sunder what God\n Has ordered to be joined,\n And do mischief on earth:\n These cause loss (only) to themselves.\n28. How can ye reject\n The faith in God?\u2014\n Seeing that ye were without life,\n And He gave you life\n Then will He cause you to die,\n And will again bring you to life;\n And again to Him will ye return.\n29. It is He Who hath created for you\n All things that are on earth;\n Moreover His design comprehended the heavens,\n For He gave order and perfection\n To the seven firmaments;\n And of all things\n He hath perfect knowledge.\n30. Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: \"I will create\n A vicegerent on earth.\" They said:\n \"Wilt Thou place therein one who will make\n Mischief therein and shed blood?\u2014\n Whilst we do celebrate Thy praises\n And glorify Thy holy (name)?\"\n He said: \"I know what ye know not.\"\n31. And He taught Adam the nature\n Of all things; then He placed them\n Before the angels, and said: \"Tell Me\n The nature of these if ye are right.\"\n32. They said: \"Glory to Thee: of knowledge\nWe have none, save what Thou\n Hast taught us: in truth it is Thou\n Who art perfect in knowledge and wisdom.\"\n33. He said: \"O Adam! tell them\n Their natures.\" When he had told them,\n God said: \"Did I not tell you\n That I know the secrets of heaven\n And earth, and I know what ye reveal\n And what ye conceal?\"\n34. And behold, We said to the angels:\n \"Bow down to Adam: \"and they bowed down:\n Not so Ibl\u012bs: he refused and was haughty:\n He was of those who reject Faith.\n35. We said: \"O Adam! dwell thou\n And thy wife in the Garden;\n And eat of the bountiful things therein\n As (where and when) ye will; but approach not this tree,\n Or ye run into harm and transgression.\"\n36. Then did Satan make them slip\n From the (Garden), and get them out\nOf the state (of felicity) in which\n They had been. We said:\n \"Get ye down, all (ye people),\n With enmity between yourselves.\n On earth will be your dwelling-place\n And your means of livelihood\u2014\n For a time.\"\n37. Then learnt Adam from his Lord\n Words of inspiration, and his Lord\n Turned towards him; for He\n Is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.\n38. We said: \"Get ye down all from here;\n And if, as is sure, there comes to you\n Guidance from Me, whosoever\n Follows My guidance, on them\n Shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.\n39. \"But those who reject Faith\n And belie Our Signs,\n They shall be Companions of the Fire;\n They shall abide therein.\"\n40. O Children of Israel! call to mind\n The (special) favour which I bestowed\n Upon you, and fulfil your Covenants\n With Me as I fulfil My Covenant\n With you, and fear none but Me.\n41. And believe in what I reveal,\n Confirming the revelation\n Which is with you,\n And be not the first to reject\n Faith therein, nor sell My Signs\n For a small price; and fear Me,\n And Me alone.\n42. And cover not Truth\n With falsehood, nor conceal\n The Truth when ye know (what it is).\n43. And be steadfast in prayer;\n Practise regular charity;\n And bow down your heads\n With those who bow down (in worship).\n44. Do ye enjoin right conduct\n On the people, and forget\n (To practise it) yourselves,\n And yet ye study the Scripture?\n Will ye not understand?\n45. Nay, seek (God's) help\n With patient perseverance\n And prayer:\n It is indeed hard, except\n To those who bring a lowly spirit,\u2014\n46. Who bear in mind the certainty\n That they are to meet their Lord,\n And that they are to return to Him.\n47. O Children of Israel! call to mind\n The (special) favour which I bestowed\n Upon you, and that I preferred you\n To all others (for My Message).\n48. Then guard yourselves against a day\n When one soul shall not avail another\n Nor shall intercession be accepted for her,\n Nor shall compensation be taken from her,\n Nor shall anyone be helped (from outside).\n49. And remember, We delivered you\n From the people of Pharaoh: they set you\n Hard tasks and punishments, slaughtered\nYour sons and let your women-folk live;\n Therein was a tremendous trial from your Lord.\n50. And remember We divided\n The Sea for you and saved you\n And drowned Pharaoh's people\n Within your very sight.\n51. And remember We appointed\n Forty nights for Moses,\n And in his absence ye took\n The calf (for worship),\n And ye did grievous wrong.\n52. Even then We did forgive you;\n There was a chance for you\n To be grateful.\n53. And remember We gave\n Moses the Scripture and the Criterion\n(Between right and wrong): there was\n A chance for you to be guided aright.\n54. And remember Moses said\n To his people: \"O my people!\n Ye have indeed wronged\n Yourselves by your worship of the calf:\n So turn (in repentance) to your Maker,\n And slay yourselves (the wrong-doers);\n That will be better for you\n In the sight of your Maker.\"\n Then He turned towards you (in forgiveness):\n For He is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.\n55. And remember ye said: \"O Moses!\n We shall never believe in thee\n Until we see God manifestly,\"\n But ye were dazed\n With thunder and lightning\n Even as ye looked on.\n56. Then We raised you up\n After your death:\n Ye had the chance\n To be grateful.\n57. And We gave you the shade of clouds\nAnd sent down to you\n Manna and quails, saying:\n \"Eat of the good things\n We have provided fcr you:\"\n (But they rebelled);\n To Us they did no harm,\n But they harmed their own souls.\n58. And remember We said:\n \"Enter this town, and eat\n Of the plenty therein\n As ye wish; but enter\n The gate with humility,\n In posture and in words,\n And We shall forgive you your faults\n And increase (the portion of)\n Those who do good.\"\n59. But the transgressors\n Changed the word from that\n Which had been given them;\n So We sent on the transgt essors\n A plague from heaven,\n For that they infringed\n (Our command) repeatedly.\n60. And remember Moses prayed\n For water for his people;\n We said: \"Strike the rock\n With thy staff.\" Then gushed forth\nTherefrom twelve springs.\n Each group knew its own place\n For water. So eat and drink\n Of the sustenance provided by God,\n And do no evil nor mischief\n On the (face of the) earth.\n61. And remember ye said:\n \"O Moses! we cannot endure\n One kind of food (always);\n So beseech thy Lord for us\n To produce for us of what the earth\n Groweth,\u2014its pot-herbs, and cucumbers,\n Its garlic, lentils, and onions.\"\n He said: \"Will ye exchange\n The better for the worse?\n Go ye down to any town,\"\n And ye shall find what ye want!\"\nThey were covered with humiliation\n And misery; they drew\n On themselves the wrath of God.\n This because they went on\n Rejecting the Signs of God\n And slaying His Messengers\n Without just cause.\n This because they rebelled\n And went on transgressing.\n62. Those who believe (in the Qur-\u0101n),\n And those who follow the Jewish (scriptures),\n And the Christians and the Sabians,\u2014\n Any who believe in God\n And the Last Day,\n And work righteousness,\n Shall have their reward\nWith their Lord: on them\n Shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.\n63. And remember We took\n Your Covenant\n And We raised above you\n (The towering height)\n Of Mount (Sinai):\n (Saying): \"Hold firmly\n To what We have given you\n And bring (ever) to remembrance\n What is therein:\n Perchance ye may fear God.\"\n64. But ye turned back thereafter:\n Had it not been for the Grace\n And Mercy of God to you,\n Ye had surely been\n Among the lost.\n65. And well ye knew\n Those amongst you\n Who transgressed\n In the matter of the Sabbath:\n We said to them:\n \"Be ye apes,\n Despised and rejected.\"\n66. So We made it an example\n To their own time\nAnd to their posterity,\n And a lesson\n To those who fear God.\n67. And remember Moses said\n To his people: \"God commands\n That ye sacrifice a heifer.\"\n They said: \"Makest thou\n A laughing-stock of us?\"\n He said: \"God save me\n From being an ignorant (fool)!\"\n68. They said: \"Beseech on our behalf\n Thy Lord to make plain to us\n What (heifer) it is!\"\n He said: \"He says: the heifer\n Should be neither too old\n Nor too young, but of middling\n Age: now do what ye are commanded!\"\n69. They said: \"Beseech on our behalf\n Thy Lord to make plain to us\n Her colour.\" He said: \"He says:\n A fawn-coloured heifer,\n Pure and rich in tone,\n The admiration of beholders!\"\n70. They said: \"Beseech on our behalf\n Thy Lord to make plain to us\n What she is: to us are all heifers\n Alike: we wish indeed for guidance,\n If God wills.\"\n71. He said: \"He says: a heifer\n Not trained to till the soil\n Or water the fields: sound\n And without blemish.\" They said:\n \"Now hast thou brought\n The truth.\" Then they offered\n Her in sacrifice,\n But not with good-will.\n72. Remember ye slew a man\n And fell into a dispute\n Among yourselves as to the crime:\n But God was to bring forth\n What ye did hide.\n73. So We said: \"Strike the (body)\n With a piece of the (heifer).\"\n Thus God bringeth the dead\n To life and showeth you His Signs:\n Perchance ye may understand.\n74. Thenceforth were your hearts\n Hardened: they became\n Like a rock and even worse\n In hardness. For among rocks\n There are some from which\n Rivers gush forth; others\n There are which when split\n Asunder send forth water;\n And others which sink\nFor fear of God. And God is\n Not unmindful of what ye do.\n75. Can ye (O ye men of Faith)\n Entertain the hope that they\n Will believe in you?\u2014\n Seeing that a party of them\n Heard the Word of God,\n And perverted it knowingly\n After they understood it.\n76. Behold! when they meet\n The men of Faith, they say:\n \"We believe\": but when\n They meet each other in private,\n They say: \"Shall you tell them\n What God hath revealed to you,\n That they may engage you\n In argument about it\n Before your Lord?\"\u2014\n Do ye not understand (their aim)?\n77. Know they not that God\n Knoweth what they conceal\n And what they reveal?\n78. And there are among them\n Illiterates, who know not the Book,\n But (see therein their own) desires,\n And they do nothing but conjecture.\n79. Then woe to those who write\n The Book with their own hands,\n And then say: \"This is from God,\"\n To traffic with it\n For a miserable price!\u2014\n Woe to them for what their hands\n Do write, and for the gain\n They make thereby.\n80. And they say: \"The Fire\n Shall not touch us\n But for a few numbered days:\"\n Say: \"Have ye taken a promise\n From God, for He never\n Breaks His promise?\n Or is it that ye say of God\n What ye do not know?\"\n81. Nay, those who seek gain\n In Evil, and are girt round\n By their sins,\n They are Companions of the Fire:\n Therein shall they abide\n (For ever).\n82. But those who have faith\n And work righteousness,\nThey are Companions of the Garden:\n Therein shall they abide\n (For ever).\n83. And remember We took\n A Covenant from the Children\n Of Israel (to this effect):\n Worship none but God;\n Treat with kindness\n Your parents and kindred,\n And orphans and those in need;\n Speak fair to the people;\n Be steadfast in prayer;\n And practise regular charity.\n Then did ye turn back,\n Except a few among you,\n And ye backslide (even now).\n84. And remember We took\n Your Covenant (to this effect):\n Shed no blood amongst you,\n Nor turn out your own people\n From your homes: and this\n Ye solemnly ratified,\n And to this ye can bear witness.\n85. After this it is ye, the same people,\n Who slay among yourselves,\n And banish a party of you\n From their homes; assist\n (Their enemies) against them,\n In guilt and rancour;\n And if they come to you\n As captives, ye ransom them,\nThough it was not lawful\n For you to banish them.\n Then is it only a part of the Book\n That ye believe in,\n And do ye reject the rest?\n But what is the reward for those\n Among you who behave like this\n But disgrace in this life?\u2014\n And on the Day of Judgment\n They shall be consigned\n To the most grievous penalty.\n For God is not unmindful\n Of what ye do.\n86. These are the people who buy\n The life of this world at the price\n Of the Hereafter: their penalty\n Shall not be lightened\n Nor shall they be helped.\n87. We gave Moses the Book\n And followed him up\n With a succession of Apostles;\n We gave Jesus the son of Mary\n Clear (Signs) and strengthened him\n With the holy spirit. Is it\n That whenever there comes to you\n An Apostle with what ye\n Yourselves desire not, ye are\n Puffed up with pride?\u2014\n Some ye called impostors,\n And others ye slay!\n88. They say, \"Our hearts\n Are the wrappings (which preserve\n God's Word: we need no more).\"\n Nay, God's curse is on them\n For their blasphemy:\n Little is it they believe.\n89. And when there comes to them\n A Book from God, confirming\n What is with them,\u2014although\n From of old they had prayed\n For victory against those\n Without Faith,\u2014when there comes.\n To them that which they\n (Should) have recognized,\n They refuse to believe in it\n But the curse of God\n Is on those without Faith.\n90. Miserable is the price\n For which they have sold\n Their souls, in that they\n Deny (the revelation)\n Which God has sent down,\n In insolent envy that God\n Of His Grace should send it\n To any of His servants He pleases:\nThus have they drawn\n On themselves Wrath upon Wrath.\n And humiliating is the punishment\n Of those who reject Faith.\n91. When it is said to them,\n \"Believe in what God\n Hath sent down,\" they say,\n \"We believe in what was sent down\n To us\": yet they reject\n All besides, even if it be Truth\n Confirming what is with them.\n Say: \"Why then have ye slain\n The prophets of God in times\n Gone by, if ye did indeed\n Believe?\"\n92. There came to you Moses\n With clear (Signs); yet\n Ye worshipped the Calf\n (Even) after that, and ye\n Did behave wrongfully.\n93. And remember We took\n Your Covenant and We raised\n Above you (the towering height)\n Of Mount (Sinai):\n (Saying): \"Hold firmly\n To what We have given you,\n And hearken (to the Law)\"\n They said: \"We hear,\n And we disobey\"\n And they had to drink\nInto their hearts\n (Of the taint) of the Calf\n Because of their Faithlessness.\n Say: \"Vile indeed\n Are the behests of your Faith\n If ye have any faith!\"\n94. Say: \"If the last Home,\n With God, be for you specially,\n And not for anyone else,\n Then seek ye for death,\n If ye are sincere.\"\n95. But they will never seek\n For death, on account of the (sins)\n Which their hands have sent\n On before them.\n And God is well-acquainted\n With the wrong-doers.\n96. Thou wilt indeed find them,\n Of all people, most greedy\n Of life,\u2014even more\n Than the idolaters:\n Each one of them wishes\n He could be given a life\n Of a thousand years:\n But the grant of such life\n Will not save him\n From (due) punishment.\n For God sees well\n All that they do.\n97. Say: Whoever is an enemy\n To Gabriel\u2014for he brings down\nThe (revelation) to thy heart\n By God's will, a confirmation\n Of what went before,\n And guidance and glad tidings\n For those who believe,\u2014\n98. Whoever is an enemy to God\n And His angels and apostles,\n To Gabriel and Michael,\u2014\n Lo! God is an enemy to those\n Who reject Faith.\n99. We have sent down to thee\n Manifest Signs (\u0101y\u0101t);\n And none reject them\n But those who are perverse.\n100. Is it not (the case) that\n Every time they make a Covenant,\n Some party among them\n Throw it aside?\u2014Nay,\n Most of them are faithless.\n101. And when there came to them\n An Apostle from God,\n Confirming what was with them,\n A party of the People of the Book\n Threw away the Book of God\n Behind their backs,\n As if (it had been something)\n They did not know!\n102. They followed what the evil ones\n Gave out (falsely)\n Against the power\n Of Solomon: the blasphemers\n Were, not Solomon, but\n The evil ones, teaching men\nMagic, and such things\n As came down at Babylon\n To the angels H\u0101r\u016bt and M\u0101r\u016bt.\n But neither of these taught anyone\n (Such things) without saying:\n \"We are only for trial;\n So do not blaspheme.\"\n They learned from them\n The means to sow discord\n Between man and wife.\n But they could not thus\n Harm anyone except\n By God's permission.\n And they learned what harmed them,\n Not what profited them.\n And they knew that the buyers\n Of (magic) would have\n No share in the happiness\n Of the Hereafter. And vile\n Was the price for which\n They did sell their souls,\n If they but knew!\n103. If they had kept their Faith\n And guarded themselves from evil,\nFar better had been\n The reward from their Lord,\n If they but knew!\n104. ye of Faith!\n Say not (to the Apostle)\n Words of ambiguous import,\n But words of respect;\n And hearken (to him):\n To those without Faith\n Is a grievous punishment.\n105. It is never the wish\n Of those without Faith\n Among the People of the Book,\n Nor of the Pagans,\n That anything good\n Should come down to you\n From your Lord.\n But God will choose\n For His special Mercy\n Whom He will\u2014for God is\n Lord of grace abounding.\n106. None of Our revelations\n Do We abrogate\n Or cause to be forgotten,\n But We substitute\nSomething better or similar:\n Knowest thou not that God\n Hath power over all things?\n107. Knowest thou not\n That to God belongeth\n The dominion of the heavens\n And the earth?\n And besides Him ye have\n Neither patron nor helper.\n108. Would ye question\n Your Apostle as Moses's\n Was questioned of old?\n But whoever changeth\n From Faith to Unbelief,\n Hath strayed without doubt\n From the even way.\n109. Quite a number of the People\n Of the Book wish they could\n Turn you (people) back\n To infidelity after ye have believed,\n From selfish envy,\n After the Truth hath become\n Manifest unto them:\n But forgive and overlook,\nTill God accomplish\n His purpose; for God\n Hath power over all things.'\n110. And be steadfast in prayer\n And regular in charity:\n And whatever good\n Ye send forth for your souls\n Before you, ye shall find it\n With God: for God sees\n Well all that ye do.\n111. And they say: \"None\n Shall enter Paradise unless\n He be a Jew or a Christian.\"\n Those are their (vain) desires.\n Say: \"Produce your proof\n If ye are truthful.\"\n112. Nay,\u2014whoever submits\n His whole self to God\n And is a doer of good,\n He will get his reward\n With his Lord;\n On such shall be no fear,\n Nor shall they grieve.\n113. The Jews say: \"The Christians\n Have naught (to stand) upon;\n And the Christians say:\n \"The Jews have naught\n (To stand) upon.\" Yet they\n (Profess to) study the (same) Book.\n Like unto their word\n Is what those say who know not;\nBut God will judge\n Between them in their quarrel\n On the Day of Judgment.\n114. And who is more unjust\n Than he who forbids\n That in places for the worship\n Of God, God's name should be\n Celebrated?\u2014whose zeal\n Is (in fact) to ruin them?\n It was not fitting that such\n Should themselves enter them\n Except in fear. For them\n There is nothing but disgrace\n In this world, and in the world\n To come, an exceeding torment.\n115. To God belong the East\n And the West: whithersoever\n Ye turn, there is the Presence\n Of God. For God is All-Pervading,\n All-Knowing.\n116. They say: \"God hath begotten\n A son\": Glory be to Him.\u2014Nay,\n To Him belongs all\n That is in the heavens\n And on earth: everything\n Renders worship to Him.'\"\n117. To Him is due\n The primal origin\nOf the heavens and the earth:\n When He decreeth a matter,\n He saith to it: \"Be,\"\n And it is.\n118. Say those without knowledge:\n \"Why speaketh not God\n Unto us? Or why cometh not\n Unto us a Sign?\"\n So said the people before them\n Words of similar import.\n Their hearts are alike.\n We have indeed made clear\n The Signs unto any people\n Who hold firmly\n To Faith (in their hearts).\n119. Verily We have sent thee\n In truth as a bearer\n Of glad tidings and a warner:\n But of thee no question\n Shall be asked of the Companions\n Of the Blazing Fire.\n120. Never will the Jews\n Or the Christians be satisfied\n With thee unless thou follow\n Their form of religion. Say:\n\"The Guidance of God,\u2014that\n Is the (only) Guidance.\"\n Wert thou to follow their desires\n After the knowledge\n Which hath reached thee,\n Then wouldst thou find\n Neither Protector nor Helper\n Against God.\n121. Those to whom We have sent\n The Book study it as it\n Should be studied: they are\n The ones that believe therein:\n Those who reject faith therein,\u2014\n The loss is their own.\n122. O Children of Israel! call to mind\n The special favour which I bestowed\n Upon you, and that I preferred you\n To all others (for My Message).\n123. Then guard yourselves against a Day\nWhen one soul shall not avail another,\n Nor shall compensation be\n accepted from her\n Nor shall intercession profit her\n Nor shall anyone be helped (from outside).\n124. And remember that Abraham\n Was tried by his Lord\n With certain Commands,\n Which he fulfilled:\n He said: \"I will make thee\n An Im\u0101m to the Nations.\"\n He pleaded: \"And also\n (Im\u0101ms) from my offspring!\"\n He answered: \"But My Promise\n Is not within the reach\n Of evil-doers.\"\n125. Remember We made the House\n A place of assembly for men\n And a place of safety;\n And take ye the Station\n Of Abraham as a place\n Of prayer; and We covenanted\n With Abraham and lsm\u0101\u2019\u012bl,\n That they should sanctify\n My House for those who\n Compass it round, or use it\nAs a retreat, or bow, or\n Prostrate themselves (therein\n In prayer).\n126. And remember Abraham said:\n \"My Lord, make this a City\n Of Peace, and feed its People\n With fruits,\u2014such of them\n As believe in God and the Last Day.\"\n He said: \"(Yea), and such as\n Reject Faith,\u2014for a while\n Will I grant them their pleasure,\n But will soon drive them\n To the torment of Fire,\u2014\n An evil destination (indeed)!\"\n127. And remember Abraham\n And Ism\u0101\u2019\u012bl raised\n The foundations of the House\n (With this prayer): \"Our Lord!\n Accept (this service) from us:\n For Thou art the All-Hearing,\n The All-Knowing.\n128. \"Our Lord! make of us\n Muslims, bowing to Thy (Will),\n And of our progeny a people\n Muslim, bowing to Thy (Will);\n And show us our places for\n The celebration of (due) rites;\n And turn unto us (in Mercy);\n For Thou art the Oft-Returning,\n Most Merciful.\n129. \"Our Lord! send amongst them\n An Apostle of their own,\n Who shall rehearse Thy Signs\n To them and instruct them\nIn Scripture and Wisdom,\n And sanctify them:\n For Thou art the Exalted in Might,\n The Wise.\"\n130. And who turns away\n From the religion of Abraham\n But such as debase their souls\n With folly? Him We chose\n And rendered pure in this world:\n And he will be in the Hereafter\n In the ranks of the Righteous.\n131. Behold! his Lord said\n To him: \"Bow (thy will to Me):\"\n He said: \"I bow (my will)\n To the Lord and Cherisher\n Of the Universe.\"\n132. And this was the legacy\n That Abraham left to his sons,\n And so did Jacob;\n \"Oh my sons! God hath chosen\n The Faith for you; then die not\n Except in the Faith of Islam.\"\n133. Were ye witnesses\n When Death appeared before Jacob?\n Behold, he said to his sons:\n \"What will ye worship after me?\"\n They said: \"We shall worship\nThy God and the God of thy fathers,\u2014\n Of Abraham, Ism\u0101'\u012bl, and Isaac,\u2014\n The One (True) God:\n To Him we bow (in Islam).\"\n134. That was a People that hath\n Passed away. They shall reap\n The fruit of what they did,\n And ye of what ye do!\n Of their merits\n There is no question in your case!\n135. They say: \"Become Jews\n Or Christians if ye would be guided\n (To salvation).\" Say thou:\n \"Nay! (I would rather) the Religion\n Of Abraham the True,\n And he joined not gods with God.\"\n136. Say ye: \"We believe\n In God, and the revelation\n Given to us, and to Abraham,\n Ism\u0101'\u012bl, Isaac, Jacob,\n And the Tribes, and that given\n To Moses and Jesus, and that given\n To (all) Prophets from their Lord:\n We make no difference\n Between one and another of them:\n And we bow to God (in Islam).\"\n137. So if they believe\n As ye believe, they are indeed\n On the right path; but if\n They turn back, it is they\nWho are in schism; but God will\n Suffice thee as against them,\n And He is the All-Hearing,\n The All-Knowing.\n138. (Our religion is)\n The Baptism of God:\n And who can baptize better\n Than God? And it is He\n Whom we worship.\n139. Say: Will ye dispute\n With us about God, seeing\n That He is our Lord\n And your Lord; that we\n Are responsible for our doings\n And ye for yours; and that\n We are sincere (in our faith) In him?\n140. Or do ye say that\n Abraham, Ism\u0101'\u012bl, Isaac,\n Jacob and the Tribes were\n Jews or Christians?\n Say: Do ye know better\n Than God? Ah! who\n Is more unjust than those\n Who conceal the testimony\n They have from God?\n But God is not unmindful\n Of what ye do!\n141. That was a people that hath\n Passed away. They shall reap\n The fruit of what they did,\n And ye of what ye do!\n Of their merits\n There is no question in your case:\n142. The Fools among the people\n Will say: \"What hath turned\n Them from the Qibla to which\n They were used?\" Say:\n To God belong both East and West:\n He guideth whom He will\n To a Way that is straight.\n143. Thus have We made of you\n An Ummat justly balanced,\n That ye might be witnesses\n Over the nations,\nAnd the Apostle a witness\n Over yourselves;\n And We appointed the Qibla\n To which thou wast used,\n Only to test those who followed\n The Apostle from those\n Who would turn on their heels\n (From the Faith). Indeed it was\n (A change) momentous, except\n To those guided by God.\n And never would God\n Make your faith of no effect.\n For God is to all people\n Most surely full of kindness,\n Most Merciful.\n144. We see the turning\n Of thy face (for guidance)\n To the heavens: now\n Shall We turn thee\n To a Qibla that shall\n Please thee. Turn then\n Thy face in the direction\n Of the sacred Mosque:\n Wherever ye are, turn\n Your faces in that direction.\nThe people of the Book\n Know well that that is\n The truth from their Lord.\n Nor is God unmindful\n Of what they do.\n145. Even if thou wert to bring\n To the people of the Book\n All the Signs (together),\n They would not follow\n Thy Qibla; nor art thou\n Going to follow their Qibla;\n Nor indeed will they follow\n Each other's Qibla. If thou\n After the knowledge hath reached thee,\n Wert to follow their (vain)\n Desires,\u2014then wert thou\n Indeed (clearly) in the wrong.\n146. The people of the Book\n Know this as they know\n Their own sons; but some\n Of them conceal the truth\n Which they themselves know.\n147. The Truth is from thy Lord;\n So be not at all in doubt.\n148. To each is a goal\n To which God turns him;\n Then strive together (as in a race)\n Towards all that is good.\n Wheresoever ye are,\n God will bring you\n Together, For God\n Hath power over all things.\n149. From whencesoever\n Thou startest forth, turn\n Thy face in the direction\n Of the Sacred Mosque;\n That is indeed the truth\n From thy Lord. And God\n Is not unmindful\n Of what ye do.\n150. So from whencesoever\n Thou startest forth, turn\n Thy face in the direction\n Of the Sacred Mosque;\n And wheresoever ye are,\n Turn your face thither:\n That there be no ground\n Of dispute against you\n Among the people,\n Except those of them that are\n Bent on wickedness; so fear\n Them not, but fear Me;\n And that I may complete\n My favours on you, and ye\n May (consent to) be guided;\n151. A similar (favour\n Have ye already received)\n In that We have sent\n Among you an Apostle\n Of your own, rehearsing to you\n Our Signs, and sanctifying\n You, and instructing you\n In Scripture and Wisdom,\n And in new Knowledge.\n152. Then do ye remember\n Me; I will remember\n You. Be grateful to Me,\n And reject not Faith.\n153. O ye who believe! seek help\n With patient Perseverance\n And Prayer: for God is with those\n Who patiently persevere.\n154. And say not of those\n Who are slain in the way\nOf God: \"They are dead.\"\n Nay, they are living,\n Though ye perceive (it) not.\n155. Be sure we shall test you\n With something of fear\n And hunger, some loss\n In goods or lives or the fruits\n (Of your toil), but give\n Glad tidings to those\n Who patiently persevere,\u2014\n156. Who say, when afflicted\n With calamity: \"To God\n We belong, and to Him\n Is our return\":\u2014\n157. They are those on whom\n (Descend) blessings from God,\n And Mercy,\n And they are the ones\n That receive guidance.\n158. Behold! \u1e62afa and Marwa\n Are among the Symbols\n Of God. So if those who visit\n The House in the Season\n Or at other times,\n Should compass them round,\n It is no sin in them.\n And if any one obeyeth his own\nImpulse to Good,\u2014\n Be sure that God\n Is He Who recogniseth\n And knoweth.\n159. Those who conceal\n The clear (Signs) We have\n Sent down, and the Guidance,\n After We have made it\n Clear for the People\n In the Book,\u2014on them\n Shall be God's curse,\n And the curse of those\n Entitled to curse,\u2014\n160. Except those who repent\n And make amends\n And openly declare (the Truth):\n To them I turn;\n For I am Oft-returning,\n Most Merciful.\n161. Those who reject Faith,\n And die rejecting,\u2014\n On them is God's curse,\n And the curse of angels,\n And of all mankind;\n162. They will abide therein:\n Their penalty will not\n Be lightened, nor will\n Respite be their (lot).\n163. And your God\n Is One God:\n There is no god\n But He,\nMost Gracious,\n Most Merciful.\n164. Behold! In the creation\n Of the heavens and the earth;\n In the alternation\n Of the Night and the Day;\n In the sailing of the ships\n Through the Ocean\n For the profit of mankind;\n In the rain which God\n Sends down from the skies,\n And the life which He gives therewith\n To an earth that is dead;\n In the beasts of all kinds\n That He scatters\n Through the earth;\n In the change of the winds,\n And the clouds which they\n Trail like their slaves\n Between the sky and the earth;\u2014\n (Here) indeed are Signs\n For a people that are wise.\n165. Yet there are men\n Who take (for worship)\n Others besides God,\n As equal (with God):\nThey love them\n As they should love God.\n But those of Faith are\n Overflowing in their love\n For God. If only\n The unrighteous could see,\n Behold, they would see\n The Penalty: that to God\n Belongs all power, and God\n Will strongly enforce\n The Penalty.\n166 Then would those\n Who are followed\n Clear themselves of those\n Who follow (them):\n They would see the Penalty,\n And all relations\n Between them would be cut off.\n167. And those who followed\n Would say: \"If only\n We had one more chance,\n We would clear ourselves\n Of them, as they have\n Cleared themselves of us.\"\n Thus will God show them\n (The fruits of) their deeds\n As (nothing but) regrets.\n Nor will there be a way\n For them out of the Fire.\n168. O ye people!\n Eat of what is on earth,\n Lawful and good;\n And do not follow\n The footsteps of the Evil One,\n For he is to you\n An avowed enemy.\n169. For he commands you\n What is evil\n And shameful,\n And that ye should say\n Of God that of which\n Ye have no knowledge.\n170. When it is said to them:\n \"Follow what God hath revealed:\"\n They say: \"Nay! we shall follow\n The ways of our fathers.\"\n What! even though their fathers\n Were void of wisdom and guidance?\n171. The parable of those\n Who reject Faith is\n As if one were to shout\n Like a goat-herd, to things\n That listen to nothing\n But calls and cries:\n Deaf, dumb, and blind,\n They are void of wisdom.\n172 O ye who believe!\n Eat of the good things\n That We have provided for you,\n And be grateful to God,\n If it is Him ye worship.\n173. He hath only forbidden you\n Dead meat, and blood,\n And the flesh of swine,\n And that on which\nAny other name hath been invoked\n Besides that of God.\n But if one is forced by necessity,\n Without wilful disobedience,\n Nor transgressing due limits,\u2014\n Then is he guiltless.\n For God is Oft-forgiving\n Most Merciful.\n174. Those who conceal\n God's revelations in the Book,\n And purchase for them\n A miserable profit,\u2014\n They swallow into themselves\n Naught but Fire;\n God will not address them\n On the Day of Resurrection,\n Nor purify them:\n Grievous will be\n Their Penalty.\n175. They are the ones\n Who buy Error\n In place of Guidance\n And Torment in place\n Of Forgiveness.\n Ah! what boldness\n (They show) for the Fire!\n176. (Their doom is) because\n God sent down the Book\n In truth but those who seek\n Causes of dispute in the Book\nAre in a schism\n Far (from the purpose).\n177. It is not righteousness\n That ye turn your faces\n Towards East or West;\n But it is righteousness\u2014\n To believe in God\n And the Last Day,\n And the Angels,\n And the Book,\n And the Messengers;\n To spend of your substance,\n Out of love for Him,\n For your kin,\n For orphans,\n For the needy,\n For the wayfarer,\n For those who ask,\n And for the ransom of slaves;\n To be steadfast in prayer,\n And practice regular charity;\n To fulfil the contracts\n Which ye have made;\nAnd to be firm and patient,\n In pain (or suffering)\n And adversity,\n And throughout\n All periods of panic.\n Such are the people\n Of truth, the God-fearing.\n178. O ye who believe!\n The law of equality\n Is prescribed to you\n In cases of murder:\n The free for the free,\n The slave for the slave,\n The woman for the woman.\n But if any remission\n Is made by the brother\n Of the slain, then grant\n Any reasonable demand,\n And compensate him\nWith handsome gratitude.\n This is a concession\n And a Mercy\n From your Lord.\n After this whoever\n Exceeds the limits\n Shall be in grave penalty.\n179. In the Law of Equality\n There is (saving of) Life\n To you, O ye men of understanding;\n That ye may\n Restrain yourselves.\n180. It is prescribed,\n When death approaches\n Any of you, if he leave\n Any goods, that he make a bequest\n To parents and next of kin,\n According to reasonable usage;\n This is due\n From the God-fearing.\n181. If anyone changes the bequest\n After hearing it,\n The guilt shall be on those\n Who make the change.\n For God hears and knows\n (All things).\n182. But if anyone fears\n Partiality or wrong-doing\n On the part of the testator,\n And makes peace between\n(The parties concerned),\n There is no wrong in him:\n For God is Oft-forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n183. O ye who believe!\n Fasting is prescribed to you\n As it was prescribed\n To those before you,\n That ye may (learn)\n Self-restraint,\u2014\n184. (Fasting) for a fixed\n Number of days;\n But if any of you is ill,\n Or on a journey,\n The prescribed number\n (Should be made up)\n From days later.\n For those who can do it\n (With hardship), is a ransom,\n The feeding of one\n That is indigent.\n But he that will give\n More, of his own free will,\u2014\n It is better for him.\n And it is better for you\n That ye fast,\n If ye only knew.\n185. Ramadh\u0101n is the (month)\n In which was sent down\n The Qur-\u0101n, as a guide\n To mankind, also clear (Signs)\n For guidance and judgment\n (Between right and wrong).\n So every one of you\n Who is present (at his home)\n During that month\n Should spend it in fasting,\n But if any one is ill,\n Or on a journey,\n The prescribed period\n (Should be made up)\n By days later.\n God intends every facility\n For you; He does not want\n To put you to difficulties.\n (He wants you) to complete\n The prescribed period,\n And to glorify Him\n In that He has guided you;\n And perchance ye shall be grateful.\n186. When My servants\n Ask thee concerning Me,\n I am indeed\n Close (to them): I listen\n To the prayer of every\n Suppliant when he calleth on Me:\n Let them also, with a will,\n Listen to My call,\n And believe in Me:\n That they may walk\n In the right way.\n187. Permitted to you,\n On the night of the fasts,\n Is the approach to your wives.\n They are your garments\nAnd ye are their garments.\n God knoweth what ye\n Used to do secretly among yourselves;\n But He turned to you\n And forgave you;\n So now associate with them,\n And seek what God\n Hath ordained for you,\n And eat and drink,\n Until the white thread\n Of dawn appear to you\n Distinct from its black thread;\n Then complete your fast\n Till the night appears;\n But do not associate\n With your wives\n While ye are in retreat\n In the mosques. Those are\n Limits (set by) God:\n Approach not nigh thereto.\n Thus doth God make clear\n His Signs to men: that\n They may learn self-restraint.\n188. And do not eat up\n Your property among yourselves\n For vanities, nor use it\n As bait for the judges,\n With intent that ye may\n Eat up wrongfully and knowingly\nA little of (other) people's property.\n189. They ask thee\n Concerning the New Moons.\n Say: They are but signs\n To mark fixed periods of time\n In (the affairs of) men,\n And for Pilgrimage.\n It is no virtue if ye enter\n Your houses from the back:\n It is virtue if ye fear God.\n Enter houses\n Through the proper doors:\n And fear God:\n That ye may prosper.\n190. Fight in the cause of God\n Those who fight you,\n But do not transgress limits;\n For God loveth not transgressors.\n191. And slay them\n Wherever ye catch them,\n And turn them out\n From where they have\nTurned you out;\n For tumult and oppression\n Are worse than slaughter;\n But fight them not\n At the Sacred Mosque,\n Unless they (first)\n Fight you there;\n But if they fight you,\n Slay them.\n Such is the reward\n Of those who suppress faith.\n192. But if they cease,\n God is Oft-forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n193. And fight them on\n Until there is no more\n Tumult or oppression,\n And there prevail\n Justice and faith in God;\n But if they cease,\n Let there be no hostility\n Except to those\n Who practise oppression.\n194. The prohibited month\n For the prohibited month,\u2014\n And so for all things prohibited,\u2014\n There is the law of equality.\n If then any one transgresses\n The prohibition against you,\n Transgress ye likewise\n Against him.\n But fear God, and know\n That God is with those\n Who restrain themselves.\n195. And spend of your substance\n In the cause of God,\n And make not your own hands\n Contribute to (your) destruction;\n But do good;\n For God loveth those\n Who do good.\n196. And complete\n The .Hajj or \u2018umra\u00a0\nIn the service of God.\n But if ye are prevented\n (From completing it),\n Send an offering\n For sacrifice,\n Such as ye may find,\n And do not shave your heads\n Until the offering reaches\n The place of sacrifice.\n And if any of you is ill,\n Or has an ailment in his scalp,\n (Necessitating shaving),\n (He should) in compensation\n Either fast, or feed the poor,\n Or offer sacrifice;\n And when ye are\n In peaceful conditions (again),\n If any one wishes\n To continue the \u2018umra\u00a0\n On to the \u1e25ajj,\n He must make an offering,\n Such as he can afford,\n But if he cannot afford it,\n He should fast\n Three days during the \u1e25ajj\n And seven days on his return,\n Making ten days in all.\n This is for those\n Whose household\n Is not in (the precincts\n Of) the Sacred Mosque.\n And fear God,\n And know that God.\n Is strict in punishment?\n197. For \u1e24ajj\u00a0\n Are the months well known.\n If any one undertakes\n That duty therein,\n Let there be no obscenity,\n Nor wickedness,\n Nor wrangling\n In the \u1e24ajj.\n And whatever good\n Ye do, (be sure)\n God knoweth it.\n And take a provision\n (With you) for the journey,\n But the best of provisions\n Is right conduct.\n So fear Me,\n O ye that are wise.\n198. It is no crime in you\n If ye seek of the bounty\n Of your Lord (during pilgrimage).\n Then when ye pour down\n From (Mount) \u2019Araf\u0101t,\n Celebrate the praises of God\n At the Sacred Monument,\nAnd celebrate His praises\n As He has directed you,\n Even though, before this,\n Ye went astray.\n199. Then pass on\n At a quick pace from the place\n Whence it is usual\n For the multitude\n So to do, and ask\n For God's forgiveness.\n For God is Oft-forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n200. So when ye have\n Accomplished your holy rites,\n Celebrate the praises of God,\n As ye used to celebrate\n The praises of your fathers,\u2014\n Yea, with far more\n Heart and soul.\n There are men who say:\n \"Our Lord! Give us\n (Thy bounties) in this world!\"\n But they will have\n No portion in the Hereafter.\n201. And there are men who say:\n \"Our Lord! Give us\n Good in this world\n And good in the Hereafter,\n And defend us\n From the torment\n Of the Fire!\"\n202. To these will be allotted\n What they have earned;\n And God is quick in account.\n203. Celebrate the praises of God\n During the Appointed Days.\n But if any one hastens\n To leave in two days,\n There is no blame on him,\n And if any one stays on,\n There is no blame on him,\n If his aim is to do right.\n Then fear God, and know\n That ye will surely\n Be gathered unto Him.\n204. There is the type of man\n Whose speech\n About this world's life\n May dazzle thee,\n And he calls God to witness\n About what is in his heart;\n Yet is he the most contentious\n Of enemies.\n205. When he turns his back,\n His aim everywhere\n Is to spread mischief\n Through the earth and destroy\n Crops and cattle.\n But God loveth not mischief.\n206. When it is said to him,\n \"Fear God,\"\n He is led by arrogance\n To (more) crime.\nEnough for him is Hell;\u2014\n An evil bed indeed\n (To lie on)!\n207. And there is the type of man\n Who gives his life\n To earn the pleasure of God;\n And God is full of kindness\n To (His) devotees.\n208. O ye who believe!\n Enter into Islam\n Whole-heartedly;\n And follow not\n The footsteps\n Of the Evil One;\n For he is to you\n An avowed enemy.\n209. If ye backslide\n After the clear (Signs)\n Have come to you,\n Then know that God\n Is Exalted in Power, Wise.\n210. Will they wait\n Until God comes to them\n In canopies of clouds,\n With angels (in His train)\n And the question\n Is (thus) settled?\n But to God\n Do all questions\n Go back (for decision).\n211. Ask the Children of Israel\n How many Clear (Signs)\nWe have sent them.\n But if any one,\n After God's favour\n Has come to him,\n Substitutes (something else),\n God is strict in punishment.\n212. The life of this world\n Is alluring to those\n Who reject faith,\n And they scoff at those\n Who believe.\n But the righteous\n Will be above them\n On the Day of Resurrection;\n For God bestows His abundance\n Without measure\n On whom He will.\n213. Mankind was one single nation,\n And God sent Messengers\n With glad tidings and warnings;\n And with them He sent\n The Book in truth,\n To judge between people\n In matters wherein\n They differed;\n But the People of the Book,\n After the clear Signs\n Came to them, did not differ\n Among themselves,\n Except through selfish contumacy.\n God by His Grace\n Guided the Believers\n To the Truth,\n Concerning that\n Wherein they differed.\n For God guides\n Whom He will\n To a path\n That is straight.\n214. Or do ye think\n That ye shall enter\nThe Garden (of Bliss)\n Without such (trials)\n As came to those\n Who passed away\n Before you?\n They encountered\n Suffering and adversity,\n And were so shaken in spirit\n That even the Apostle\n And those of faith\n Who were with him\n Cried: \"When (will come)\n The help of God?\"\n Ah! Verily, the help of God\n Is (always) near!\n215. They ask thee\n What they should spend\n (In charity). Say: Whatever\n Ye spend that is good,\n Is for parents and kindred\n And orphans\n And those in want\n And for wayfarers.\n And whatever ye do\n That is good,\u2014God\n Knoweth it well.\n216. Fighting is prescribed\n For you, and ye dislike it.\n But it is possible\n That ye dislike a thing\n Which is good for you,\n And that ye love a thing\n Which is bad for you.\n But God knoweth,\n And ye know not.\n217. They ask thee\n Concerning fighting\n In the Prohibited Month.\n Say: \"Fighting therein\n Is a grave (offence);\n But graver is it\n In the sight of God\n To prevent access\n To the path of God,\n To deny Him,\n To prevent access\n To the Sacred Mosque,\n And drive out its members.\n Tumult and oppression\n Are worse than slaughter.\n Nor will they cease\n Fighting you until\n They turn you back\n From your faith\n If they can.\n And if any of you\n Turn back from their faith\n And die in unbelief,\n Their works will bear no fruit\n In this life\n And in the Hereafter;\n They will be\n Companions of the Fire\n And will abide therein.\n218. Those who believed\n And those who suffered exile\n And fought (and strove and struggled)\n In the path of God,\u2014\n They have the hope\n Of the Mercy of God;\n And God is Oft-forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n219. They ask thee\n Concerning wine and gambling.\n Say: \"In them is great sin,\n And some profit, for men;\n But the sin is greater\n Than the profit.\"\n Whey ask thee how much\n They are to spend;\n Say: \"What is beyond\n Your needs.\"\n Thus doth God\n Make clear to you\n His Signs: in order that\n Ye may consider\u2014\n220. (Their bearings) on\n This life and the Hereafter.\nThey ask thee\n Concerning orphans.\n Say: \"The best thing to do\n Is what is for their good;\n If ye mix\n Their affairs with yours,\n They are your brethren;\n But God knows\nThe man who means mischief\n From the man who means good.\n And if God had wished,\n He could have put you\n Into difficulties: He is indeed\n Exalted in Power, Wise.\n221. Do not marry\n Unbelieving women (idolaters),\n Until they believe:\n A slave woman who believes\n Is better than an unbelieving woman,\n Even though she allure you.\n Nor marry (your girls)\n To unbelievers until\n They believe:\n A man slave who believes\n Is better than an unbeliever,\n Even though he allure you.\n Unbelievers do (but)\n Beckon you to the Fire.\n But God beckons by His Grace\n To the Garden (of Bliss)\n And forgiveness,\n And makes His Signs\n Clear to mankind:\n That they may\n Celebrate His praise.\n222. They ask thee\n Concerning women's courses.\n Say: They are\n A hurt and a pollution:\nSo keep away from women\n In their courses, and do not\n Approach them until\n They are clean.\n But when they have\n Purified themselves,\n Ye may approach them\n In any manner, time, or place\n Ordained for you by God.\n For God loves those\n Who turn to Him constantly\n And He loves those\n Who keep themselves pure and clean,\n223. Your wives are\n As a tilth unto you;\n So approach your tilth\n When or how ye will;\n But do some good act\n For your souls beforehand;\n And fear God,\n And know that ye are\n To meet Him (in the Hereafter),\n And give (these) good tidings\n To those who believe.\n224. And make not\n God's (name) an excuse\n In your oaths against\n Doing good, or acting rightly,\n Or making peace\n Between persons;\nFor God is One\n Who heareth and knoweth\n All things.\n225. God will not\n Call you to account\n For thoughtlessness\n In your oaths,\n But for the intention\n In your hearts;\n And He is\n Oft-forgiving\n Most Forbearing.\n226. For those who take\n An oath for abstention\n From their wives,\n A waiting for four months\n Is ordained;\n If then they return,\n God is Oft-forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n227. But if their intention\n Is firm for divorce,\n God heareth\n And knoweth all things.\n228. Divorced women\n Shall wait concerning themselves\nFor three monthly periods.\n Nor is it lawful for them\n To hide what God\n Hath created in their wombs,\n If they have faith\n In God and the Last Day.\n And their husbands\n Have the better right\n To take them back\n In that period, if\n They wish for reconciliation.\n And women shall have rights\n Similar to the rights\n Against them, according\n To what is equitable;\n But men have a degree\n (Of advantage) over them.\n And God is Exalted in Power, Wise.\n229. A divorce is only\n Permissible twice: after that,\n The parties should either hold\n Together on equitable terms,\n Or separate with kindness.\n It is not lawful for you,\n (Men), to take back\n Any of your gifts (from your wives)\n Except when both parties\n Fear that they would be\n Unable to keep the limits\nOrdained by God.\n If ye (judges) do indeed\n Fear that they would be\n Unable to keep the limits\n Ordained by God,\n There is no blame on either\n Of them if she give\n Something for her freedom.\n These are the limits\n Ordained by God;\n So do not transgress them\n If any do transgress\n The limits ordained by God,\n Such persons wrong\n (Themselves as well as others).\n230. So if a husband\n Divorces his wife (irrevocably),\n He cannot, after that,\n Re-marry her until\n After she has married\n Another husband and\n He has divorced her.\n In that case there is\n No blame on either of them\n If they re-unite, provided\n They feel that they\n Can keep the limits\n Ordained by God.\n Such are the limits\n Ordained by God,\n Which He makes plain\n To those who understand.\n231. When ye divorce\n Women, and they fulfil\nThe term of their (\u2019Iddat),\n Either take them back\n On equitable terms\n Or set them free\n On equitable terms;\n But do not take them back\n To injure them, (or) to take\n Undue advantage;\n If any one does that,\n He wrongs his own soul.\n Do not treat God's Signs\n As a jest,\n But solemnly rehearse\n God's favours on you,\n And the fact that He\n Sent down to you\n The Book\n And Wisdom,\n For your instruction.\n And fear God,\n And know that God\n Is well acquainted\n With all things.\n232. When ye divorce\n Women, and they fulfil\n The term of their (\u2019Iddat),\n Do not prevent them\n From marrying\n Their (former) husbands,\n If they mutually agree\n On equitable terms.\n This instruction\n Is for all amongst you,\n Who believe in God\n And the Last Day.\n That is (the course\nMaking for) most virtue\n And purity amongst you,\n And God knows,\n And ye know not.\n233. The mothers shall give suck\n To their offspring\n For two whole years,\n If the father desires\n To complete the term.\n But he shall bear the cost\n Of their food and clothing\n On equitable terms.\n No soul shall have\n A burden laid on it\n Greater than it can bear.\n No mother shall be\n Treated unfairly\n On account of her child.\n Nor father\n On account of his child,\n An heir shall be chargeable\n In the same way.\n If they both decide\n On weaning,\n By mutual consent,\n And after due consultation,\n There is no blame on them.\n If ye decide\n On a foster-mother\n For your offspring,\n There is no blame on you,\n Provided ye pay (the mother)\n What ye offered,\n On equitable terms.\n But fear God and know\n That God sees well\n What ye do.\n234. If any of you die\n And leave widows behind,\nThey shall wait concerning themselves\n Four months and ten days:\n When they have fulfilled\n Their term, there is no blame\n On you if they dispose\n Of themselves in a just\n And reasonable manner.\n And God is well acquainted\n With what ye do.\n235. There is no blame\n On you if ye make\n An offer of betrothal\n Or hold it in your hearts.\n God knows that ye\n Cherish them in your hearts:\n But do not make a secret contract\n With them except in terms\n Honourable, nor resolve on the tie\n Of marriage till the term\n Prescribed is fulfilled.\n And know that God\n Knoweth what is in your hearts,\n And take heed of Him;\n And know that God is\n Oft-forgiving, Most Forbearing.\n236. There is no blame on you\n If ye divorce women\n Before consummation\n Or the fixation of their dower;\n But bestow on them\n (A suitable gift),\n The wealthy\n According to his means,\n And the poor\n According to his means;\u2014\nA gift of a reasonable amount\n Is due from those\n Who wish to do the right thing.\n237. And if ye divorce them\n Before consummation,\n But after the fixation\n Of a dower for them,\n Then the half of the dower\n (Is due to them), unless\n They remit it\n Or (the man's half) is remitted\n By him in whose hands\n Is the marriage tie;\n And the remission\n (Of the man's half)\n Is the nearest to righteousness.\n And do not forget\n Liberality between yourselves.\n For God sees well\n All that ye do.\n238. Guard strictly\n Your (habit of) prayers,\n Especially the Middle Prayer;\n And stand before God\n In a devout (frame of mind).\n239. If ye fear (an enemy),\n Pray on foot, or riding,\n (As may be most convenient),\n But when ye are\n In security, celebrate\n God's praises in the manner\n He has taught you,\n Which ye knew not (before).\n240. Those of you\n Who die and leave widows\n Should bequeath\n For their widows\n A year's maintenance\n And residence;\n But if they leave\n (The residence),\n There is no blame on you\n For what they do\n With themselves,\n Provided it is reasonable.\n And God is Exalted in Power, Wise.\n241. For divorced women\n Maintenance (should be provided)\n On a reasonable (scale).\n This is a duty\n On the righteous.\n242. Thus doth God\n Make clear His Signs\n To you: in order that\n Ye may understand.\n243. Didst thou not\n Turn by vision to those\n Who abandoned their homes,\n Though they were thousands\n (In number), for fear of death?\n God said to them: \"Die\":\n Then He restored them to life.\n For God is full of bounty\n To mankind, but\n Most of them are ungrateful.\n244. Then fight in the cause\n Of God, and know that God\n Heareth and knoweth all things.\n245. Who is he\n That will loan to God\n A beautiful loan, which God\n Will double unto his credit\n And multiply many times?\n It is God that giveth (you)\n Want or Plenty,\n And to Him shall be\n Your return.\n246. Hast thou not\n Turned thy vision to the Chiefs\n Of the Children of Israel\n After (the time of) Moses?\nThey said to a Prophet\n (That was) among them:\n \"Appoint for us a King, that we\n May fight in the cause of God.\"\n He said: \"Is it not possible,\n If ye were commanded\n To fight, that that ye\n Will not fight?\" They said:\n \"How could we refuse\n To fight in the cause of God,\n Seeing that we were turned out\n Of our homes and our families?\"\n But when they were commanded\n To fight, they turned back,\n Except a small band\n Among them. But God\n Has full knowledge of those\n Who do wrong.\n247. Their Prophet said to them:\n \"God hath appointed\n Talut as king over you.\"\n They said: \"How can he\n Exercise authority over us\n When we are better fitted\n Than he to exercise authority,\n And he is not even gifted,\n With wealth in abundance?\"\n He said: \"God hath\n Chosen him above you,\n And hath gifted him\n Abundantly with knowledge\n And bodily prowess: God\nGranteth His authority to whom\n He pleaseth. God careth\n For all, and He knoweth\n All things.\"\n248. And (further) their Prophet\n Said to them: \"A Sign\n Of his authority\n Is that there shall come\n To you the Ark of the Covenant,\n With (an assurance) therein\n Of security from your Lord,\n And the relics left\n By the family of Moses\n And the family of Aaron,\n Carried by angels.\n In this is a Symbol\n For you if ye indeed\n Have faith.\"\n249. When Tal\u016bt set forth\n With the armies, he said:\n \"God will test you\n At the stream: if any\n Drinks of its water,\n He goes not with my army:\n Only those who taste not\n Of it go with me:\n A mere sip out of the hand\n Is excused.\" But they all\n Drank of it, except a few.\n When they crossed the river,\u2014\n He and the faithful ones with him,\n They said: \"This day\n We cannot cope\n With Goliath and his forces.\"\nBut those who were convinced\n That they must meet God,\n Said: \"How oft, by God's will,\n Hath a small force\n Vanquished a big one?\n God is with those\n Who steadfastly persevere.\"\n250. When they advanced\n To meet Goliath and his forces,\n They prayed: \"Our Lord\n Pour out constancy on us\n And make our steps firm:\n Help us against those\n That reject faith.\"\n251. By God's will,\n They routed them;\n And David slew Goliath;\n And God gave him\n Power and wisdom\n And taught him\n Whatever (else) He willed,\n And did not God\n Check one set of people\n By means of another,\n The earth would indeed\n Be full of mischief:\n But God is full of bounty\n To all the worlds.\n252. These are the Signs\n Of God: we rehearse them\n To thee in truth: verily\n Thou art one of the Apostles.\n253. Those apostles\n Were endowed with gifts,\n Some above others\n To one of them God spoke;\n Others He raised\n To degrees (of honour);\n To Jesus the son of Mary\n We gave Clear (Signs),\n And strengthened him\n With the holy spirit.\n If God had so willed,\n Succeeding generations\n Would not have fought\n Among each other, after\n Clear (Signs) had come to them,\n But they (chose) to wrangle,\n Some believing and Others\n Rejecting. If God had so willed,\n They would not have fought\n Each other; but God\n Fulfilleth His plan.\n254. O ye who believe!\n Spend out of (the bounties)\n We have provided for you,\n Before the Day comes\n When no bargaining\n (Will avail), nor friendship\n Nor intercession.\n Those who reject Faith\u2014they\n Are the wrong-doers.\n255. God! There is no god\n But He,\u2014the Living,\n The Self-subsisting, Eternal.\n No slumber can seize Him\n Nor sleep. His are all things\n In the heavens and on earth.\n Who is there can intercede\n In His presence except\n As He permitteth? He knoweth\n What (appeareth to His creatures\nAs) Before or After\n Or Behind them.\n Nor shall they compass\n Aught of His knowledge\n Except as He willeth.\n His Throne doth extend\n Over the heavens\n And the earth, and He feeleth\n No fatigue in guarding,\n And preserving them\n For He is the Most High,\n The Supreme (in glory).\n256. Let there be no compulsion\n In religion: Truth stands out\n Clear from Error: whoever\n Rejects Evil and believes\n In God hath grasped\n The most trustworthy\n Hand-hold, that never breaks.\n And God heareth\n And knoweth all things.\n257. God is the Protector\n Of those who have faith:\nFrom the depths of darkness\n He will lead them forth\n Into light. Of those\n Who reject faith the patrons\n Are the Evil Ones: from light\n They will lead them forth\n Into the depths of darkness.\n They will be Companions\n Of the fire, to dwell therein\n (For ever).\n258. Hast thou not\n Turned thy vision to one\n Who disputed with Abraham\n About his Lord, because\n God had granted him\n Power? Abraham said:\n \"My Lord is He Who\n Giveth life and death.\"\n He said: \"I give life and death.\"\n Said Abraham: \"But it is God\n That causeth the sun\n To rise from the East:\n Do thou then cause him\n To rise from the West.\"\n Thus was he confounded\n Who (in arrogance) rejected\n Faith. Nor doth God\n Give guidance\n To a people unjust.\n259. Or (take) the similitude\n Of one who passed\nBy a hamlet, all in ruins\n To its roofs. He said:\n \"Oh! how shall God\n Bring it (ever) to life,\n After (this) its death?\"\n But God caused him\n To die for a hundred years,\n Then raised him up (again).\n He said: \"How long\n Didst thou tarry (thus)?\"\n He said: \"(Perhaps) a day\n Or part of a day.\" He said:\n \"Nay, thou hast tarried\n Thus a hundred years;\n But look at thy food\n And thy drink; they show\n No signs of age; and look\n At thy donkey: and that\n We may make of thee\n A Sign unto the people,\n Look further at the bones,\n How We bring them together\n And clothe them with flesh.\"\n When this was shown clearly\n To him, he said: \"I know\n That God hath power\n Over all things.\"\n260. Behold! Abraham said:\n \"My Lord! Show me how\n Thou givest life to the dead.\"\n He said: \"Dost thou not\n Then believe?\" He said:\n \"Yea! but to satisfy\nMy own understanding.\"\n He said: \"Take four birds;\n Tame them to turn to thee;\n Put a portion of them\n On every hill, and call to them:\n They will come to thee\n (Flying) with speed.\n Then know that God\n Is Exalted in Power, Wise.\"\n261. The parable of those\n Who spend their substance\n In the way of God is that\n Of a grain of corn: it groweth\n Seven ears, and each ear\n Hath a hundred grains.\n God giveth manifold increase\n To whom He pleaseth:\n And God careth for all\n And He knoweth all things\n262. Those who spend\n Their substance in the cause\n Of God, and follow not up\n Their gifts with reminders\n Of their generosity\n Or with injury,\u2014for them\n Their reward is with their Lord:\n On them shall be no fear,\n Nor shall they grieve.\n263. Kind words\n And the covering of faults\nAre better than charity\n Followed by injury.\n God is Free of all wants,\n And He is most Forbearing.\n264. O ye who believe!\n Cancel not your charity\n By reminders of your generosity\n Or by injury,\u2014like those\n Who spend their substance\n To be seen of men,\n But believe neither\n In God nor in the Last Day.\n They are in Parable like a hard,\n Barren rock, on which\n Is a little soil: on it\n Falls heavy rain,\n Which leaves it\n (Just) a bare stone.\n They will be able to do nothing\n With aught they have earned.\n And God guideth not\n Those who reject faith.\n265. And the likeness of those\n Who spend their substance,\n Seeking to please God\n And to strengthen their souls,\n Is as a garden, high\n And fertile: heavy rain\n Falls on it but makes it yield\n A double increase\n Of harvest, and if it receives not\n Heavy rain, light moisture\n Sufficeth it. God seeth well\n Whatever ye do.\n266. Does any of you wish\n That he should have a garden\n With date-palms and vines\n And streams flowing\n Underneath, and all kinds\n Of fruit, while he is stricken\n With old age, and his children\n Are not strong (enough\n To look after themselves)\u2014\n That it should be caught\n In a whirlwind,\n With fire therein,\n And be burnt up?\n Thus doth God make clear\n To you (His) Signs;\n That ye may consider.\n267. O ye who believe!\n Give of the good things\n Which ye have (honourably) earned,\n And of the fruits of the earth\n Which We have produced\nFor you, and do not even aim\n At getting anything\n Which is bad, in order that\n Out of it ye may give away\n Something, when ye yourselves\n Would not receive it\n Except with closed eyes.\n And know that God\n Is Free of all wants,\n And Worthy of all praise.\n268. The Evil One threatens\n You with poverty\n And bids you to conduct\n Unseemly. God promiseth\n You His forgiveness\n And bounties.\n And God careth for all\n And He knoweth all things.\n269. He granteth wisdom\n To whom He pleaseth;\n And he to whom wisdom\n Is granted receiveth\n Indeed a benefit overflowing;\n But none will grasp the Message\n But men of understanding.\n270. And whatever ye spend\n In charity or devotion,\n Be sure God knows it all.\n But the wrong-doers\n Have no helpers.\n271. If ye disclose (acts\n Of) charity, even so\n It is well,\n But if ye conceal them,\n And make them reach\n Those (really) in need,\n That is best for you:\n It will remove from you\n Some of your (stains\n Of) evil. And God\n Is well acquainted\n With what ye do.\n272. It is not required\n Of thee (O Apostle),\n To set them on the right path,\n But God sets on the right path\n Whom He pleaseth.\n Whatever of good ye give\n Benefits your own souls,\n And ye shall only do so\n Seeking the \"Face\"\n Of God. Whatever good\n Ye give, shall be\n Rendered back to you,\n And ye shall not\n Be dealt with unjustly.\n273. (Charity is) for those\n In need, who, in God's cause\n Are restricted (from travel),\n And cannot move about\nIn the land, seeking\n (For trade or work):\n The ignorant man thinks,\n Because of their modesty,\n That they are free from want.\n Thou shalt\u1e33now them\n By their (unfailing) mark:\n They beg not importunately\n From all and sundry.\n And whatever of good\n Ye give, be assured\n God knoweth it well.\n274. Whose who (in charity)\n Spend of their goods\n By night and by day,\n In secret and in public,\n Have their reward\n With their Lord:\n On them shall be no fear,\n Nor shall they grieve.\n275. Those who devour usury\n Will not stand except\n As stands one whom\n The Evil One by his touch\n Hath driven to madness.\n That is because they say:\n \"Trade is like usury,\"\n But God hath permitted trade\nAnd forbidden usury.\n Those who after receiving\n Direction from their Lord,\n Desist, shall be pardoned\n For the past; their case\n Is for God (to judge);\n But those who repeat\n (The offence) are Companions\n Of the Fire: they will\n Abide therein (for ever).\n276. God will deprive\n Usury of all blessing,\n But will give increase\n For deeds of charity:\n For He loveth not\n Creatures ungrateful\n And wicked.\n277. Those who believe,\n And do deeds of righteousness,\n And establish regular prayers\n And regular charity,\n Will have their reward\n With their Lord:\n On them shall be no fear,\n Nor shall they grieve.\n278. O ye who believe!\n Fear God, and give up\n What remains of your demand\n For usury, if ye are\n Indeed believers.\n279. If ye do it not,\n Take notice of war\n From God and His Apostle:\n But if ye turn back,\n Ye shall have\n Your capital sums:\n Deal not unjustly,\n And ye shall not\n Be dealt with unjustly.\n280. If the debtor is\n In a difficulty,\n Grant him time\n Till it is easy\n For him to repay.\n But if ye remit it\n By way of charity,\n That is best for you\n If ye only knew.\n281. And fear the Day\n When ye shall be\n Brought back to God.\n Then shall every soul\n Be paid what it earned,\n And none shall be\n Dealt with unjustly.\n282. O ye who believe!\n When ye deal with each other,\n In transactions involving\n Future obligations\n In a fixed period of time,\n Reduce them to writing\n Let a scribe write down\n Faithfully as between\n The parties: let not the scribe\n Refuse to write: as God\n Has taught him,\n So let him write.\n Let him who incurs\n The liability dictate,\n But let him fear\n His Lord God,\n And not diminish\n Aught of what he owes.\n If the party liable\n Is mentally deficient,\nOr weak, or unable\n Himself to dictate,\n Let his guardian\n Dictate faithfully.\n And get two witnesses,\n Out of your own men,\n And if there are not two men,\n Then a man and two women,\n Such as ye choose,\n For witnesses,\n So that if one of them errs,\n The other can remind her.\n The witnesses\n Should not refuse\n When they are called on\n (For evidence).\n Disdain not to reduce\n To writing (your contract)\n For a future period,\n Whether it be small\n Or big: it is juster\n In the sight of God,\n More suitable as evidence,\n And more convenient\n To prevent doubts\n Among yourselves\n But if it be a transaction\n Which ye carry out\n On the spot among yourselves,\n There is no blame on you\n If ye reduce it not\n To writing.\n But take witnesses\n Whenever ye make\n A commercial contract;\n And let neither scribe\n Nor witness suffer harm.\n If ye do (such harm),\n It would be wickedness\n In you. So fear God;\n For it is God\n That teaches you.\n And God is well acquainted\n With all things.\n283. If ye are on a journey,\n And cannot find\n A scribe, a pledge\n With possession (may serve\n The purpose).\n And if one of you\n Deposits a thing\n On trust with another,\n Let the trustee\n (Faithfully) discharge\n His trust, and let him\n Fear his Lord.\n Conceal not evidence;\n For whoever conceals it,\u2014\n His heart is tainted\n With sin. And God\n Knoweth all that ye do.\n284. To God belongeth all\n That is in the heavens\n And on earth. Whether\n Ye show what is in your minds\n Or conceal it, God\n Calleth you to account for it.\nHe forgiveth whom He pleaseth,\n And punishefh whom He pleaseth.\n For God hath power\n Over all things.\n285. The Apostle believeth\n In what hath been revealed\n To him from his Lord,\n As do the men of faith.\n Each one (of them) believeth\n In God, His angels,\n His books, and His apostles.\n \"We make no distinction (they say)\n Between one and another\n Of His apostles.\" And they say:\n \"We hear, and we obey:\n (We seek) Thy forgiveness,\n Our Lord, and to Thee\n Is the end of all journeys.\"\n286. On no soul doth God\n Place a burden greater\n Than it can bear.\n It gets every good that it earns,\n And it suffers every ill that if earns.\n (Pray:) \"Our Lord!\n Condemn us not\n If we forget or fall\n Into error; our Lord!\n Lay not on us a burden\n Like that which Thou\n Didst lay on those before us;\nOur Lord! lay not on us\n A burden greater than we\n Have strength to bear.\n Blot out our sins,\n And grant us forgiveness,\n Have mercy on us.\n Thou art our Protector;\n Help us against those\n Who stand against Faith\"","title":"The Holy Quran: S\u016bra II.
