A. L. M.\n2. God! There is no god\n But He,\u2014the Living,\n The Self-Subsisting, Eternal.\n3. It is He Who sent down\n To thee (step by step),\n In truth, the Book,\n Confirming what went before it;\n And He sent down the Law\n (Of Moses) and the Gospel\n (Of Jesus) before this,\n As a guide to mankind,\n And He sent down the Criterion\n (Of judgment between right and wrong).\n4. Then those who reject\n Faith in the Signs of God\n Will suffer the severest\n Penalty, and God\n Is Exalted in Might,\n Lord of Retribution.\n5. From God, verily\n Nothing is hidden\n On earth or in the heavens.\n6. He it is Who shapes you\n In the wombs as He pleases.\nThere is no god but He,\n The Exalted in Might,\n The Wise.\n7. He it is Who has sent down\n To thee the Book:\n In it are verses\n Basic or fundamental\n (Of established meaning);\n They are the foundation\n Of the Book: others\n Are allegorical. But those\n In whose hearts is perversity follow\n The part thereof that is allegorical,\n Seeking discord, and searching\n For its hidden meanings,\n But \u1e6do one knows\n Its hidden meanings except God.\n And those who are firmly grounded\n In knowledge say: \"We believe\n In the Book; the whole of it\n Is from our Lord:\" and none\n Will grasp the Message\n Except men of understanding.\n8. \"Our Lord!\" (they say),\n \"Let not our hearts deviate\n Now after Thou hast guided us,\n But grant us mercy\n From Thine own Presence;\n For Thou art the Grantor\n Of bounties without measure.\n9. \"Our Lord! Thou art He\n That will gather mankind\n Together against a Day about which\n There is no doubt; for God\n Never fails in His promise.\"\n10. Whose who reject Faith,\u2014\n Neither their possessions\n Nor their (numerous) progeny\n Will avail them aught\n Against God: they are themselves\n But fuel for the Fire.\n11. (Their plight will be)\n No better than that\n Of the people of Pharaoh,\n And their predecessors:\n They denied our Signs,\n And God called them to account\n For their sins.\n For God is strict\n In punishment.\n12. Say to those who reject Faith:\n \"Soon will ye be vanquished\n And gathered together\n To Hell,\u2014an evil bed\n Indeed (to lie on)!\n13. \"There has already been\n For you a Sign\nIn the two armies\n That met (in combat):\n One was fighting in the Cause\n Of God, the other\n Resisting God; these saw\n With their own eyes\n Twice their number.\n But God doth support\n With His aid whom He pleaseth.\n In this is a warning\n For such as have eyes to see.\"\n14. Fair in the eyes of men\n Is the love of things they covet:\n Women and sons;\n Heaped-up hoards\n Of gold and silver; horses\n Branded (for blood and excellence);\n And (wealth of) cattle\n And well-tilled land.\n Such are the possessions\n Of this world's life;\n But in nearness to God\n Is the best of the goals\n (To return to).\n15. Say: Shall I give you\n Glad tidings of things\n Far better than those?\n For the righteous are Gardens\nIn nearness to their Lord,\n With rivers flowing beneath;\n Therein is their eternal home;\n With Companions pure (and holy);\n And the good pleasure of God.\n For in God's sight\n Are (all) His servants,\u2014\n16. (Namely), those who say:\n \"Our Lord! we have indeed\n Believed: forgive us, then,\n Our sins, and save us\n From the agony of the Fire;\"\u2014\n17. Those who show patience,\n Firmness and self control;\n Who are true (in word and deed);\n Who worship devoutly;\n Who spend (in the way of God);\n And who pray for forgiveness\n In the early hours of the morning.\n18. There is no god but He\n That is the witness of God,\n His angels, and those endued\n With knowledge, standing firm\n On justice. There is no god but He,\n The Exalted in Power,\n The Wise.\n19. The Religion before God\n Is Islam (submission to His Will):\n Nor did the People of the Book\n Dissent therefrom except\nThrough envy of each other,\n After knowledge had come to them.\n But if any deny the Signs of God,\n God is swift in calling to account.\n20. So if they dispute with thee,\n Say: \"I have submitted\n My whole self to God\n And so have those\n Who follow me.\"\n And say to the People of the Book\n And to those who are unlearned:\n \"Do ye (also) submit yourselves?\"\n If they do, they are in right guidance,\n But if they turn back,\n Thy duty is to convey the Message;\n And in God's sight\n Are (all) His servants.\n21. As to those who deny\n The Signs of God, and in defiance\nOf right, slay the prophets,\n And slay those who teach\n Just dealing whith mankind,\n Announce to them a grievous penalty.\n22. They are those whose works\n Will bear no fruit\n In this world\n And in the Hereafter,\n Nor will they have\n Anyone to help.\n23. Hast thou not turned\n Thy vision to those\n Who have been given a portion\n Of the Book? They are\n Invited to the Book of God,\n To settle their dispute,\n But a party of them\n Turn back and decline\n (The arbitration).\n24. This because they say:\n \"The Fire shall not touch us\n But for a few numbered days\":\n For their forgeries deceive them\n As to their own religion.\n25. But how (will they fare)\n When We gather them together\nAgainst a Day about which\n There is no doubt,\n And each soul will be paid out\n Just what it has earned,\n Without (favour or) injustice?\n26. Say: \"O God!\n Lord of Power (and Rule),\n Thou givest Power\n To whom Thou pleasest,\n And Thou strippest off Power\n From whom Thou pleasest:\n Thou enduest with honour\n Whom Thou pleasest,\n And Thou bringest low\n Whom Thou pleasest:\n In Thy hand is all Good.\"\n Verily, over all things\n Thou hast power.\n27. \"Thou causest the Night\n To gain on the Day,\n And Thou causest the Day\n To gain on the Night;\n Thou bringest the Living\n Out of the Dead,\n And Thou bringest the Dead\n Out of the Living;\n And Thou givest sustenance\n To whom Thou pleasest,\n Without measure.\"\n28. let not the Believers\n Take for friends or helpers\nUnbelievers rather than\n Believers: if any do that,\n In nothing will there be help\n From God: except by way\n Of precaution, that ye may\n Guard yourselves from them,\n But God cautions you\n (To remember) Himself;\n For the final goal\n Is to God.\n29. Say: \"Whether ye hide\n What is in your hearts\n Or reveal it,\n God knows it all:\n He knows what is\n In the heavens,\n And what is on earth.\n And God has power\n Over all things.\n30. \"On the Day when every soul\n Will be confronted\n With all the good it has done,\n And all the evil it has done,\n It will wish there were\n A great distance\n Between it and its evil.\n But God cautions you\n (To remember) Himself.\n And God is full of kindness\n To those that serve Him.\"\n31. Say: \"If ye do love God,\n Follow me: God will love you\n And forgive you your sins:\n For God is Oft-Forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\"\n32. Say: \"Obey God\n And His Apostle\":\n But if they turn back,\n God loveth not those\n Who reject Faith.\n33. God did choose\n Adam and Noah, the family\n Of Abraham, and the family\n Of \u2019Imr\u0101n above all people,\u2014\n34. Offspring, one of the other:\n And God heareth\n And knoweth all things.\n35. Behold! a woman of \u2019Imr\u0101n\n Said: \"O my Lord! I do\nDedicate unto Thee\n What is in my womb\n For Thy special service:\n So accept this of me:\n For Thou hearest\n And knowest all things.\"\n36. When she was delivered,\n She said: \"O my Lord!\n Behold! I am delivered\n Of a female child!\"\u2014\n And God knew best\n What she brought forth\u2014\n \"And nowise is the male\n Like the female.\n I have named her Mary,\n And I commend her\n And her offspring\n To Thy protection\n From the Evil One,\n The Rejected.\"\n37. Right graciously\n Did her Lord accept her:\n He made her grow\n In purity and beauty:\n To the care of Zakar\u012bya\n Was she assigned.\n Every time that he entered\n (Her) chamber to see her,\n He found her supplied\n With sustenance. He said:\n \"O Mary! Whence (comes) this\n To you?\" She said:\n \"From God: for God\n Provides sustenance\n To whom He pleases,\n Without measure.\"\n38. There here did Zakar\u012bya\n Pray to his Lord, saying:\n \"O my Lord! Grant unto me\n From Thee a progeny\n That is pure: for Thou\n Art He that heareth prayer!\n39. While he was standing\n In prayer in the chamber,\n The angels called unto him:\n \"God doth give thee\n Glad tidings of Ya\u1e25y\u0101,\n Witnessing the truth\n Of a Word from God, and (be\n Besides) noble, chaste,\n And a Prophet,\n Of the (goodly) company\n Of the righteous.\"\n40. He said: \"O my Lord!\n How shall I have a son,\n Seeing I am very old,\n And my wife is barren?\"\n \"Thus, \"was the answer,\n \"Doth God accomplish\n What He willeth,\"\n41. He said: \"O my Lord!\n Give me a Sign!\"\n \"Thy Sign, \"was the answer,\n \"Shall be that thou\n Shalt speak to no man\n For three days\n But with signals.\n Then celebrate\n The praises of thy Lord\n Again and again,\n And glorify Him\n In the evening\n And in the morning.\"\n42. Behold! the angels said:\n \"O Mary! God hath chosen thee\n And purified thee\u2014chosen thee\n Above the women of all nations.\n43. \"O Mary! worship\n Thy Lord devoutly:\n Prostrate thyself,\n And bow down (in prayer)\n With those who bow down.\"\n44. This is part of the tidings\n Of the things unseen,\n Which We reveal unto thee\n (O Apostle!) by inspiration:\n Thou wast not with them\n When they cast lots\n With arrows, as to which\n Of them should be charged\n With the care of Mary:\n Nor wast thou with them\n When they disputed (the point).\n45. Behold! the angels said:\n \"O Mary! God giveth thee\n Glad tidings of a Word\n From Him: his name\n Will be Christ Jesus,\n The son of Mary, held in honour\n In this world and the Hereafter\n And of (the company of) those\n Nearest to God;\n46. \"He shall speak to the people\n In childhood and in maturity.\n And he shall be (of the company)\n Of the righteous.\"\n47. She said: \"O my Lord!\n How shall I have a son\n When no man hath touched me?\"\n He said: \"Even so:\n God createth\n What He willeth:\n When He hath decreed\n A Plan, He but saith\n To it, 'Be,' and it is!\n48. \"And God will teach him\n The Book and Wisdom,\n The Law and the Gospel,\n49. \"And (appoint him)\n An apostle to the Children\n Of Israel, (with this message):\n \"'I have come to you,\n With a Sign from your Lord,\n In that I make for you\n Out of clay, as it were,\n The figure of a bird,\n And breathe into it,\n And it becomes a bird\n By God's leave:\n And I heal those\n Born blind, and the lepers,\n And I quicken the dead,\n By God's leave;\n And I declare to you\n What ye eat, and what ye store\n In your houses. Surely\n Therein is a Sign for you\n If ye did believe;\n50. \"'(I have come to you),\n To attest the Law\n Which was before me.\n And to make lawful\n To you part of what was\n (Before) forbidden to you;\n I have come to you\n With a Sign from your Lord.\n So fear God,\n And obey me.\n51. \"'It is God\n Who is my Lord\n And your Lord;\n Then worship Him.\n This is a Way\n That is straight.'\"\n52. When Jesus found\n Unbelief on their part\n He said: \"Who will be\n My helpers to (the work\n Of) God?\" Said the Disciples:\n \"We are God's helpers:\n We believe in God,\n And do thou bear witness\n That we are Muslims.\n53. \"Our Lord! we believe\n In what Thou hast revealed,\n And we follow the Apostle;\n Then write us down\n Among those who bear witness.\"\n54. And (the unbelievers)\n Plotted and planned,\n And God too planned,\n And the best of planners\n Is God.\n55. Behold! God said:\n \"O Jesus! I will take thee\n And raise thee to Myself\n And clear thee (of the falsehoods)\n Of those who blaspheme;\n I will make those\n Who follow thee superior\n To those who reject faith,\n To the Day of Resurrection:\n Then shall ye all\n Return unto me,\n And I will judge\n Between you of the matters\n Wherein ye dispute.\n56. \"As to those who reject faith,\n I will punish them\n With terrible agony\n In this world and in the Hereafter,\n Nor will they have\n Anyone to help.\n57. \"As to those who believe\n And work righteousness,\n God will pay them (in full)\n Their reward;\n But God loveth not\n Those who do wrong.\n58. \"This is what we rehearse\n Unto thee of the Signs\n And the Message\n Of Wisdom.\"\n59. The similitude of Jesus\n Before God is as that of Adam;\n He created him from dust,\n Then said to him, \"Be\":\n And he was.\n60. The Truth (comes)\n From God alone;\n So be not of those\n Who doubt.\n61. If any one disputes\n In this matter with thee,\n Now after (full) knowledge\n Hath come to thee,\n Say: \"Come! let us\n Gather together,\n Our sons and your sons,\n Our women and your women,\n Ourselves and yourselves:\n Then let us earnestly pray,\n And invoke the curse\n Of God on those who lie!\"\n62. This is the true account:\n There is no god\n Except God;\n And God\u2014He is indeed\nThe Exalted in Power,\n The Wise.\n63. But if they turn back,\n God hath full knowledge\n Of those who do mischief.\n64. Say: \"O People\n Of the Book! come\n To common terms\n As between us and you:\n That we worship\n None but God;\n That we associate\n No partners with Him;\n That we erect not,\n From among ourselves,\n Lords and patrons\n Other than God.\"\n If then they turn back,\n Say ye: \"Bear witness\n That we (at least)\n Are Muslims (bowing\n To God's Will).\"\n65. Ye People of the Book!\n Why dispute ye\n About Abraham,\n When the Law and the Gospel\n Were not revealed\n Till after him?\n Have ye no understanding?\n66. Ah! Ye are those\n Who fell to disputing\n (Even) in matters of which\n Ye had some knowledge!\n But why dispute ye\n In matters of which\n Ye have no knowledge?\n It is God Who knows,\n And ye who know not!\n67. Abraham was not a Jew\n Nor yet a Christian;\n But he was true in Faith,\n And bowed his will to God's,\n (Which is Islam),\n And he joined not gods with God.\n68. Without doubt, among men,\n The nearest of kin to Abraham,\n Are those who follow him,\n As are also this Apostle\n And those who believe:\n And God is the Protector\n Of those who have faith.\n69. It is the wish of a section\n Of the People of the Book\n To lead you astray.\n But they shall lead astray\n (Not you), but themselves,\n And they do not perceive!\n70. Ye People of the Book!\n Why reject ye\nThe Signs of God,\n Of which ye are\n (Yourselves) witnesses?\n71. Ye People of the Book!\n Why do ye clothe\n Truth with falsehood,\n And conceal the Truth,\n While ye have knowledge?\n72. A section of the People\n Of the Book say:\n \"Believe in the morning\n What is revealed\n To the Believers,\n But reject it at the end\n Of the day; perchance\n They may (themselves)\n Turn back;\n73. \"And believe no one\n Unless he follows\n Your religion.\"\n Say: \"True guidance\n Is the guidance of God:\n (Fear ye) lest a revelation\n Be sent to someone (else)\n Like unto that which was sent\n Unto you? Or that those\n (Receiving such revelation)\n Should engage you in argument\n Before your Lord?\"\n Say: \"All bounties\n Are in the hand of God:\n He granteth them\n To whom He pleaseth:\nAnd God careth for all,\n And He knoweth all things.\"\n74. For His Mercy He specially chooseth\n Whom He pleaseth;\n For God is the Lord\n Of bounties unbounded.\n75. Among the People of the Book\n Are some who, if entrusted\n With a hoard of gold,\n Will (readily) pay it back;\n Others, who, if entrusted\n With a single silver coin,\n Will not repay it unless\n Thou constantly stoodest\n Demanding, because,\n They say, \"there is no call\n On us (to keep faith)\n With these ignorant (Pagans).\"\n But they tell a lie against God,\n And (well) they know it.\n76. Nay.\u2014Those that keep\n Their plighted faith\n And act aright,\u2014verily\n God loves those\n Who act aright.\n77. As for those who sell\n The faith they owe to God\n And their own plighted word\n For a small price,\n They shall have no portion\n In the Hereafter:\nNor will God\n (Deign to) speak to them\n Or look at them\n On the Day of Judgment,\n Nor will He cleanse them\n (Of sin): they shall have\n A grievous Penalty.\n78. There is among them\n A section who distort\n The Book with their tongues\n (As they read) you would think\n It is a part of the Book,\n But it is no part\n Of the Book; and they say,\n That is from God,\"\n But it is not from God:\n It is they who tell\n A lie against God,\n And (well) they know it!\n79. It is not (possible)\n That a man, to whom\n Is given the Book,\n And Wisdom,\n And the Prophetic Office,\n Should say to people:\n \"Be ye my worshippers\n Rather than God's\":\n On the contrary\n (He would say):\n \"Be ye worshippers\n Of Him Who is truly\n The Cherisher of all:\n For ye have taught\n The Book and ye\n Have studied it earnestly.\"\n80. Nor would he instruct you\n To take angels and prophets\n For Lords and Patrons.\n What! would he bid you\nTo unbelief after ye have\n Bowed your will\n (To God in Islam)?\n81. Behold! God took\n The Covenant of the Prophets,\n Saying: \"I give you\n A Book and Wisdom;\n Then comes to you\n An Apostle, confirming\n What is with you;\n Do ye believe in him\n And render him help.\"\n God said: \"Do ye agree,\n And take this my Covenant\n As binding on you?\"\n They said: \"We agree.\"\n He said: \"Then bear witness,\n And I am with you\n Among the witnesses.\"\n82. If any turn back\n After this, they are\n Perverted transgressors.\n83. Do they seek\n For other than the Religion\n Of God?\u2014while all creatures\n In the heavens and on earth\n Have, willing or unwilling,\n Bowed to His Will\n (Accepted Islam),\n And to Him shall they\n All be brought back.\n84. Say: \"We believe\n In God, and in what\n Has been revealed to us\n And what was revealed\n To Abraham, Ism\u0101\u2019\u012bl;\n Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes,\n And in (the Books)\n Given to Moses, Jesus,\n And the Prophets,\n From their Lord:\n We make no distinction\n Between one and another\n Among them, and to God do we\n Bow our will (in Islam).\"\n85. If anyone desires\n A religion other than\n Islam (submission to God),\n Never will it be accepted\n Of him; and in the Hereafter\n He will be in the ranks\n Of those who have lost\n (All spiritual good).\n86. How shall God\n Guide those who reject\n Faith after they accepted it\n And bore witness\n That the Apostle was true\n And that Clear Signs\n Had come unto them?\n But God guides not\n A people unjust.\n87. Of such the reward\n Is that on them (rests)\nThe curse of God,\n Of His angels,\n And of all mankind;\u2014\n88. In that will they dwell;\n Nor will their penalty\n Be lightened, nor respite\n Be their (lot);\u2014\n89. Except for those that repent\n (Even) after that,\n And make amends;\n For verily God\n Is Oft-Forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n90. But those who reject\n Faith after they accepted it,\n And then go on adding\n To their defiance of Faith,\u2014\n Never will their repentance\n Be accepted; for they\n Are those who have\n (Of set purpose) gone astray.\n91. As to those who reject\n Faith, and die rejecting,\u2014\n Never would be accepted\n From any such as much\n Gold as the earth contains,\n Though they should offer it\n For ransom. For such\n Is (in store) a penalty grievous,\n And they will find no helpers.\n92. By no means shall ye\n Attain righteousness unless\n Ye give (freely) of that\n Which ye love; and whatever\n Ye give, of a truth\n God knoweth it well.\n93. All food was lawful\n To the Children of Israel,\n Except what Israel\n Made unlawful for itself,\n Before the Law (of Moses)\n Was revealed. Say:\n \"Bring ye the Law\n And study it,\n If ye be men of truth.\"\n94. If any, after this, invent\n A lie and attribute it\n To God, they are indeed\n Unjust wrong-doers.\n95. Say: \"God speaketh\n The Truth: follow\n The religion of Abraham,\n The sane in faith; he\n Was not of the Pagans.\"\n96. The first House (of worship)\n Appointed for men\n Was that at Bakka:\n Full of blessing\nAnd of guidance\n For all kinds of beings:\n97. In it are Signs\n Manifest; (for example),\n The Station of Abraham;\n Whoever enters it\n Attains security;\n Pilgrimage thereto is a duty\n Men owe to God,\n Those who can afford\n The journey; but if any\n Deny faith, God stands not\n In need of any of His creatures.\n98. Say: \"O People of the Book!\n Why reject ye the Signs\n Of God, when God\n Is Himself witness\n To all ye do?\"\n99. Say: \"O ye People of the Book!\n Why obstruct ye\n Those who believe,\n From the Path of God,\n Seeking to make it crooked,\n While ye were yourselves\n Witnesses (to God's Covenant)?'\n But God is not unmindful\n Of all that ye do.\"\n100. O ye who believe!\n If ye listen\n To a faction\n Among the People of the Book,\n They would (indeed)\n Render you apostates\n After ye have believed!\n101. And how would ye\n Deny Faith while unto you\n Are rehearsed the Signs\n Of God, and among you\nLives the Apostle?\n Whoever holds\n Firmly to God\n Will be shown\n A Way that is straight.\n102. O ye who believe!\n Fear God as He should be\n Feared, and die not\n Except in a state\n Of Islam.\n103. And hold fast,\n All together, by the Rope\n Which God (stretches out\n For you), and be not divided\n Among yourselves;\n And remember with gratitude\n God's favour on you;\n For ye were enemies\n And He joined your hearts\n In love, so that by His Grace,\n Ye became brethren;\n And ye were on the brink\n Of the Pit of Fire,\n And He saved you from it.\n Thus doth God make\n His Signs clear to you:\n That ye may be guided.\n104. Let there arise out of you\n A band of people\n Inviting to all that is good,\n Enjoining what is right,\nAnd forbidding what is wrong:\n They are the ones\n To attain felicity.\n105. Be not like those\n Who are divided\n Amongst themselves\n And fall into disputations\n After receiving\n Clear Signs:\n For them\n Is a dreadful Penalty,\u2014\n106. On the Day when\n Some faces will be (lit up\n With) white, and some faces\n Will be (in the gloom of) black:\n To those whose faces\n Will be black, (will be said):\n \"Did ye reject Faith\n After accepting it?\n Taste then the Penalty\n For rejecting Faith.\"\n107. But those whose faces\n Will be (lit with) white,\u2014\n They will be in (the light\n Of) God's mercy: therein\n To dwell (for ever).\n108. These are the Signs\n Of God: We rehearse them\n To thee in Truth:\n And God means\n No injustice to any\n Of His creatures.\n109. To God belongs all\n That is in the heavens\nAnd on earth: to Him\n Do all questions\n Go back (for decision).\n110. Ye are the best\n Of Peoples, evolved\n For mankind,\n Enjoining what is right,\n Forbidding what is wrong,\n And believing in God.\n If only the People of the Book\n Had faith, it were best\n For them: among them\n Are some who have faith,\n But most of them\n Are perverted transgressors.\n111: They will do you no harm,\n Barring a trifling annoyance;\n If they come out to fight you,\n They will show you their backs,\n And no help shall they get.\n112. Shame is pitched over them\n (Like a tent) wherever\n They are found,\n Except when under a covenant\n (Of protection) from God\n And from men; they draw\n On themselves wrath from God,\n And pitched over them\n Is (the tent of) destitution.\n This because they rejected\n The Signs of God, and slew\n The Prophets in defiance of right;\nThis because they rebelled\n And transgressed beyond bounds.\n113. Not all of them are alike:\n Of the People of the Book\n Are a portion that stand\n (For the right); they rehearse\n The Signs of God all night long,\n And they prostrate themselves\n In adoration.\n114. They believe in God\n And the Last Day;\n They enjoin what is right,\n And forbid what is wrong;\n And they hasten (in emulation)\n In (all) good works:\n They are in the ranks\n Of the righteous.\n115. Of the good that they do,\n Nothing will be rejected\n Of them; for God knoweth well\n Those that do right.\n116. Those who reject Faith,\u2014\n Neither their possessions\n Nor their (numerous) progeny\n Will avail them aught against God:\n They will be Companions\n Of the Fire,\u2014dwelling\n Therein (for ever).\n117. What they spend\n In the life\n Of this (material) world\n May be likened to a Wind\n Which brings a nipping frost:\n It strikes and destroys the harvest\n Of men who have wronged\nTheir own souls: it is not God\n That hath wronged them, but\n They wrong themselves.\n118. O ye who believe!\n Take not into your intimacy\n Those outside your ranks:\n They will not fail\n To corrupt you. They\n Only desire your ruin:\n Rank hatred has already\n Appeared from their mouths:\n What their hearts conceal\n Is far worse.\n We have made plain\n To you the Signs,\n If ye have wisdom.\n119. Ah! ye are those\n Who love them,\n But they love you not,\n Though ye believe\n In the whole of the Book,\n When they meet you,\n They say, \"We believe\":\n But when they are alone,\n They bite off the very tips\n Of their fingers at you\n In their rage. Say:\n \"Perish in your rage;\n God knoweth well\n All the secrets of the heart.\"\n120. If aught that is good\n Befalls you, it grieves them;\n But if some misfortune\n Overtakes you, they rejoice\nAt it. But if ye are constant\n And do right,\n Not the least harm\n Will their cunning\n Do to you; for God\n Compasseth round about\n All that they do.\n121. Remember that morning\n Thou didst leave\n Thy household (early)\n To post the Faithful\n At their stations for battle:\n And God heareth\n And knoweth all things:\n122. Rememer two of your parties\n Meditated cowardice;\n But God was their protector,\n And in God should the Faithful\n (Ever) put their trust.\n123. God had helped you\n At Badr, when ye were\n A contemptible little force;\n Then fear God; thus\n May ye show your gratitude.\n124. Remember thou saidst\n To the Faithful: \"Is it not enough\n For you that God should help you\n With three thousand angels\n (Specially) sent down?\n125. \"Yea,\u2014if ye remain firm,\n And act aright, even if\n The enemy should rush here\n On you in hot haste,\n Your Lord would help you\n With five thousand angels\n Making a terrific onslaught.\"\n126. God made it but a message\n Of hope for you, and an assurance\n To your hearts: (in any case)\n There is no help\n Except from God,\n The Exalted, the Wise:\n127. That He might cut off\n A fringe of the Unbelievers\n Or expose them to infamy,\n And they should then\n Be turned back,\n Frustrated of their purpose.\n128. Not for thee, (but for God),\n Is the decision:\n Whether He turn in mercy\n To them, or punish them;\n For they are indeed wrong-doers.\n129. To God belongeth all\n That is in the heavens\n And on earth.\n He forgiveth whom He pleaseth\n And punisheth whom He pleaseth\n But God is Oft-Forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n130. ye who believe!\n Devour not Usury,\n Doubled and multiplied;\n But fear God; that\n Ye may (really) prosper.\n131. Fear the Fire, which is prepared\n For those who reject Faith:\n132. And obey God\n And the Apostle;\n That ye may obtain mercy.\n133. Be quick in the race\n For forgiveness from your Lord,\n And for a Garden whose width\n Is that (of the whole)\n Of the heavens\n And of the earth,\n Prepared for the righteous,\u2014\n134. Those who spend (freely),\n Whether in prosperity,\n Or in adversity;\n Who restrain anger,\n And pardon (all) men;\u2014\n For God loves those\n Who do good;\u2014\n135. And those who,\n Having done something\n To be ashamed of,\n Or wronged their own souls,\n Earnestly bring God to mind,\n And ask for forgiveness\n For their sins,\n And who can forgive\n Sins except God?\u2014\n And are never obstinate\n In persisting knowingly\n In (the wrong) they have done\n136. For such the reward\n Is forgiveness from their Lord,\n And Gardens with rivers\n Flowing underneath,\u2014\n An eternal dwelling:\n How excellent a recompense\n For those who work (and strive)!\n137. Many were the Ways of Life\n That have passed away\n Before you: travel through\n The earth, and see what was\n The end of those\n Who rejected Truth.\n138. Here is a plain statement\n To men, a guidance\n And instruction to those\n Who fear God!\n139. So lose not heart,\n Nor fall into despair:\n For ye must gain mastery\n If ye are true in Faith.\n140. If a wound hath touched you,\n Be sure a similar wound\n Hath touched the others.\n Such days (of varying fortunes)\n We give to men and men\n By turns: that God may know\n Those that believe,\n And that He may take\n To Himself from your ranks\n Martyr-witnesses (to Truth).\n And God loveth not\n Those that do wrong.\n141. God's object also is to purge\n Those that are true in Faith\n And to deprive of blessing\n Those that resist Faith.\n142. Did ye think that ye\n Would enter Heaven\n Without God testing\n Those of you who fought hard\n (In His Cause) and\n Remained steadfast?\n143. Ye did indeed\n Wish for Death\n Before ye met him:\n Now ye have seen him\n With your own eyes,\n (And ye flinch!)\n144. Muhammad is no more\n Than an Apostle: many\n Were the Apostles that passed away\n Before him. If he died\n Or were slain, will ye then\n Turn back on your heels?\n If any did turn back\n On his heels, not the least\n Harm will he do to God;\n But God (on the other hand)\n Will swiftly reward those\n Who (serve him) with gratitude.\n145. Nor can a soul die\n Except by God's leave,\nThe term being fixed\n As by writing. If any\n Do desire a reward\n In this life, We shall give it\n To him; and if any\n Do desire a reward\n In the Hereafter, We shall\n Give it to him.\n And swiftly shall We reward\n Those that (serve us with) gratitude.\n146. How many of the Prophets\n Fought (in God's way),\n And with them (fought)\n Large bands of godly men?\n But they never lost heart\n If they met with disaster\n In God's way, nor did\n They weaken (in will)\n Nor give in. And God\n Loves those who are\n Firm and steadfast.\n147. All that they said was:\n \"Our Lord! forgive us\n Our sins and anything\n We may have done\n That transgressed our duty:\n Establish our feet firmly,\n And help us against\n Those that resist\n Faith.\"\n148. And God gave them\n A reward in this world,\n And the excellent reward\n Of the Hereafter. For God\n Loveth those who do good.\n149. O ye who believe!\n If ye obey the Unbelievers,\n They will drive you back\n On your heels, and ye\n Will turn back (from Faith)\n To your own loss.\n150. Nay, God is your Protector,\n And He is the best of helpers.\n151. Soon shall We cast terror\n Into the hearts of the Unbelievers\n For that they joined companions\n With God, for which He had sew\n No authority: their abode\n Will be the Fire: and evil\n Is the home of the wrong-doers!\n152. God did indeed fulfil\n His promise to you\n When ye with His permission\n Were about to annihilate\n Your enemy,\u2014until ye flinched\n And fell to disputing\n About the order,\n And disobeyed it\n After He brought you in sight\n (Of the Booty) which ye covet.\n Among you are some\n That hanker after this world\n And some that desire\n The Hereafter. Then did He\nDivert you from your foes\n In order to test you.\n But He forgave you:\n For God is full of grace\n To those who believe.\n153. Behold! ye were climbing up\n The high ground, without even\n Casting a side glance\n At any one, and the Apostle\n In your rear was calling you\n Back. There did God give you\n One distress after another\n By way of requital,\n To teach you not to grieve\n For (the booty) that had escaped you\n And for (the ill) that had befallen you.\n For God is well aware\n Of all that ye do.\n154. After (the excitement)\n Of the distress, He sent down\n Calm on a band of you\n Overcome with slumber,\n While another band\n Was stirred to anxiety\n By their own feelings,\n Moved by wrong suspicions\n Of God\u2014suspicions due\n To Ignorance. They said:\n \"What affair is this of ours?\"\n Say thou: \"Indeed, this affair\nIs wholly God's.\" They hide\n In their minds what they\n Dare not reveal to thee.\n They say (to themselves):\n \"If we had had anything\n To do with this affair,\n We should not have been\n In the slaughter here.\"\n Say: \"Even if you had remained\n In your homes, those\n For whom death was decreed\n Would certainly have gone forth\n To the place of their death\";\n But (all this was)\n That God might test\n What is in your breasts\n And purge what is\n In your hearts.\n For God knoweth well\n The secrets of your hearts.\n155. Those of you\n Who turned back\n On the day the two hosts\n Met,\u2014it was Satan\n Who caused them to fail,\n Because of some (evil)\n They had done. But God\n Has blotted out (their fault):\n For God is Oft-forgiving,\n Most Forbearing.\n156. O ye who believe!\n Be not like the Unbelievers,\n Who say of their brethren,\n When they are travelling\n Through the earth or engaged\n In fighting: \"If they had stayed\n With us, they would not\n Have died, or been slain.\"\nThis that God may make it\n A cause of sighs and regrets\n In their hearts. It is God\n That gives Life and Death,\n And God sees well\n All that ye do.\n157. And if ye are slain, or die,\n In the way of God,\n Forgiveness and mercy\n From God are far better\n Than all they could amass.\n158. And if ye die, or are slain,\n Lo! it is-unto God\n That ye are brought together.\n159. It is part of the Mercy\n Of God that thou dost deal\n Gently with them.\n Wert thou severe\n Or harsh-hearted,\n They would have broken away\n From about thee: so pass over\n (Their faults), and ask\n For (God's) forgiveness\n For them; and consult\n Them in affairs (of moment).\n Then, when thou hast\n Taken a decision,\n Put thy trust in God.\nFor God loves those\n Who put their trust (in Him).\n160. If God helps you,\n Non can overcome you:\n If He forsakes you,\n Who is there, after that,\n That can help you?\n In God, then,\n Let Believers put their trust.\n161. No prophet could (ever)\n Be false to his trust.\n If any person is so false,\n He shall, on the Day\n Of Judgment, restore\n What he misappropriated;\n Then shall every soul\n Receive its due,\u2014\n Whatever it earned,\u2014\n And none shall be\n Dealt with unjustly.\n162. Is the man who follows\n The good pleasure of God\n Like the man who draws\n On himself the wrath\n Of God, and whose abode\n Is in Hell?\u2014\n A woeful refuge!\n163. They are in varying grades\n In the sight of God,\n And God sees well\n All that they do.\n164. God did confer\n A great favour\nOn the Believers\n When He sent among them\n An Apostle from among\n Themselves, rehearsing\n Unto them the Signs\n Of God, sanctifying them,\n And instructing them\n In Scripture and Wisdom,\n While, before that,\n They had been\n In manifest error.\n165. What! When a single\n Disaster smites you,\n Although ye smote (your enemies)\n With one twice as great,\n Do ye say?\u2014\n \"Whence is this?\"\n Say (to them):\n \"It is from yourselves:\n For God hath power\n Over all things.\"\n166. What ye suffered\n On the day the two armies\n Met, was with the leave\n Of God, in order that\n He might test the Believers,\u2014\n167. And the Hypocrites also.\n These were told: \"Come,\n Fight in the way of God,\n Or (at least) drive\n (The foe from Your city).\"\n They said: \"Had we known\n How to fight, we should\n Certainly have followed you.\"\nThey were that day\n Nearer to Unbelief\n Than to Faith,\n Saying with their lips\n What was not in their hearts.\n But God hath full knowledge\n Of all they conceal.\n168. (They are) the ones that say,\n (Of their brethren slain),\n While they themselves\n Sit (at ease): \"If only\n They had listened to us,\n They would not have been slain.\"\n Say: \"Avert death\n From your own selves,\n If ye speak the truth.\"\n169. Think not of those\n Who are slain in God's way\n As dead. Nay, they live,\n Finding their sustenance\n In the Presence of their Lord;\n170. They rejoice in the Bounty\n Provided by God:\n And with regard to those\n Left behind, who have not\n Yet joined them (in their bliss),\n The (Martyrs) glory in the fact\n That on them is no fear,\n Nor have they (cause to) grieve.\n171. They glory in the Grace\n And the Bounty from God,\n And in the fact that\n God suffereth not\nThe reward of the Faithful\n To be lost (in the least).\n172. Of those who answered\n The call of God\n And the Apostle,\n Even after being wounded,\n Those who do right\n And refrain from wrong\n Have a great reward;\u2014\n173. Men said to them:\n \"A great army is gathering\n Against you\":\n And frightened them:\n But it (only) increased\n Their Faith: they said:\n \"For us God sufficeth,\n And He is the best\n Disposer of affairs.\"\n174. And they returned\n With Grace and Bounty\n From God: no harm\n Ever touched them:\n For they followed\n The good pleasure of God:\n And God is the Lord\n Of bounties unbounded.\n175. It is only the Evil One\n That suggests to you\n The fear of his votaries:\n Be ye not afraid\n Of them, but fear Me,\n If ye have Faith.\n176. Let not those grieve thee\n Who rush headlong\n Into Unbelief:\n Not the least harm\n Will they do to God:\n God's Plan is that He\nWill give them no portion\n In the Hereafter,\n But a severe punishment.\n177. Those who purchase\n Unbelief at the price\n Of faith,\n Not the least harm\n Will they do to God,\n But they will have\n A grievous punishment.\n178. Let not the Unbelievers\n Think that Our respite\n To them is good for themselves:\n We grant them respite\n That they may grow\n In their iniquity:\n But they will have\n A shameful punishment.\n179. God will not leave\n The Believers in the state\n In which ye are now,\n Until He separates\n What is evil\n From what is good.\n Nor will He disclose\n To you the secrets\n Of the Unseen,\n But He chooses\n Of His Apostles\n (For the purpose)\n Whom He pleases.\n So believe in God\n And His Apostles:\n And if ye believe\n And do right,\n Ye have a reward\n Without measure.\n180. And let not those\n Who covetously withhold\n Of the gifts which God\n Hath given them of His Grace,\n Think that it is good for them:\n Nay, it will be the worse\n For them: soon shall the things\n Which they covetously withheld\n Be tied to their necks\n Like a twisted collar,\n On the Day of Judgment.\n To God belongs the heritage\n Of the heavens and the earth;\n And God is well-acquainted\n With all that ye do.\n181. God hath heard\n The taunt of those\n Who say: \"Truly, God\n Is indigent and we\n Are rich!\"\u2014We shall\n Certainly record their word\nAnd (their act) of slaying\n The Prophets in defiance\n Of right, and We shall say:\n \"Taste ye the Penalty\n Of the Scorching Fire!\n182. \"This is because\n Of the (unrighteous deeds)\n Which your hands\n Sent on before ye:\n For God never harms\n Those who serve Him.\"\n183. They (also) said: \"God took\n Our promise not to believe\n In an apostle unless\n He showed us a sacrifice\n Consumed by fire\n (From heaven).\" Say:\n \"There came to you\n Apostles before me,\n With Clear Signs\n And even with what\n Ye ask for: why then\n Did ye slay them,\n If ye speak the truth?\"\n184. Then if they reject thee,\n So were rejected apostles\n Before thee, who came\n With Clear Signs,\n Books of dark prophecies,\n And the Book of Enlightenment.\n185. Every soul shall have\n A taste of death:\n And only on the Day\n Of Judgment shall you\n Be paid your full recompense.\n Only he who is saved\n Far from the Fire\n And admitted to the Garden\n Will have attained\n The object (of Life):\n For the life of this world\n Is but goods and chattels\n Of deception.\n186. Ye shall certainly\n Be tried and tested\n In your possessions\n And in your personal selves;\n And ye shall certainly\n Hear much that will grieve you,\n From those who received\n The Book before yot:\n And from those who\n Worship many gods.\n But if ye persevere\n Patiently, and guard\n Against evil,\u2014then\n That will be\n A determining factor\n In all affairs.\n187. And remember\n God took a Covenant\n From the People of the Book,\n To make it known\n And clear to mankind,\n And not to hide it;\nBut they threw it away\n Behind their backs,\n And purchased with it\n Some miserable gain!\n And vile was the bargain\n They made!\n188. Think not that those\n Who exult in what they\n Have brought about, and love\n To be praised for what\n They have not done,\u2014\n Think not that they\n Can escape the Penalty.\n For them is a Penalty\n Grievous indeed.\n189. To God belongeth\n The dominion\n Of the heavens\n And the earth;\n And God hath power\n Over all things.\n190. Behold! In the creation\n Of the heavens and the earth,\n And the alternation\n Of Night and Day,\u2014\n There are indeed Signs\n For men of understanding,\u2014\n191. Men who celebrate\n The praises of God,\n Standing, sitting,\n And lying down on their sides,\n And contemplate\n The (wonders of) creation\nIn the heavens and the earth,\n (With the thought):\n \"Our Lord! not for naught\n Hast Thou created (all) this!\n Glory to Thee! Give us\n Salvation from the Penalty\n Of the Fire.\n192. \"Our Lord! any whom Thou\n Dost admit to the Fire,\n Truly Thou coverest with shame,\n And never will wrong-doers\n Find any helpers!\n193. \"Our Lord! we have heard\n The call of one calling\n (Us) to Faith, 'Believe ye\n In the Lord,' and we\n Have believed. Our Lord!\n Forgive us our sins,\n Blot out from us\n Our iniquities, and take\n To Thyself our souls\n In the company of the righteous.\n194. \"Our Lord! Grant us\n What Thou didst promise\n Unto us through Thine Apostles,\n And save us from shame\n On the Day of Judgment:\n For Thou never breakest\n Thy promise.\"\n195. And their Lord hath accepted\n Of them, and answered them:\n \"Never will I suffer to be lost\n The work of any of you,\nBe he male or female:\n Ye are members, one of another:\n Those who have left their homes,\n Or been driven out therefrom,\n Or suffered harm in My Cause,\n Or fought or been slain,\u2014\n Verily, I will blot out\n From them their iniquities,\n And admit them into Gardens\n With rivers flowing beneath;\u2014\n A reward from the Presence\n Of God, and from His Presence\n Is the best of rewards.\"\n196. Let not the strutting about\n Of the Unbelievers\n Through the land\n Deceive thee:\n197. Little is it for enjoyment:\n Their ultimate abode\n Is Hell: what an evil bed\n (To lie on)!\n198. On the other hand, for those\n Who fear their Lord,\n Are Gardens, with rivers\n Flowing beneath; therein\n Are they to dwell (for ever),\u2014\n A gift from the Presence\n Of God; and that which is\n In the Presence of God\n Is the best (bliss)\n For the righteous.\n199. And there are, certainly,\n Among the People of the Book,\nThose who believe in God,\n In the revelation to you,\n And in the revelation to them,\n Bowing in humility to God:\n They will not sell\n The Signs of God\n For a miserable gain!\n For them is a reward\n With their Lord,\n And God is swift in account.\n200.
