{"collection":"Islam","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/isl/yaq/yaq005.htm","path":"isl/yaq/yaq005.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/isl/yaq/yaq005.htm","text":"The Holy Quran, tr. by Yusuf Ali, [1934]\nIn the name of God, Most Gracious,\n Most Merciful.\n1. 1 O ye who believe!\n Fulfil (all) obligations\n 2 Lawful unto you (for food)\n Are all four-footed animals,\n With the exceptions named:\n But animals of the chase\n Are forbidden while ye\n Are in the Sacred Precincts\n Or in pilgrim garb:\n For God doth command\n According to His Will and Plan\n2. 3 O ye who believe!\n Violate not the sanctity\nOf the Symbols of God,\n Nor of the Sacred Month,\n Nor of the animals brought\n For sacrifice, nor the garlands\n That mark out such animals,\n Nor the people resorting\n To the Sacred House,\n Seeking of the bounty\n And good pleasure\n Of their Lord.\n But when ye are clear\n Of the Sacred Precincts\n And of pilgrim garb,\n Ye may hunt\n And let not the hatred\n Of some people\n In (once) shutting you out\n Of the Sacred Mosque\n Lead you to transgression\n (And hostility on your part).\n Help ye one another\n In righteousness and piety,\n But help ye not one another\n In sin and rancour:\n Fear God: for God\n Is strict in punishment.\n3. 4 Forbidden to you (for food)\n Are: dead meat, blood,\nThe flesh of swine, and that\n On which hath been invoked\n The name of other than God;\n That which hath been\n Killed by strangling,\n Or by a violent blow,\n Or by a headlong fall,\n Or by being gored to death;\n That which hath been (partly)\n Eaten by a wild animal;\n Unless ye are able\n To slaughter it (in due form);\n That which is sacrificed\n On stone (altars);\n (Forbidden) also is the division\n (Of meat) by raffling\n With arrows: that is impiety.\n This day have those who\n Reject Faith given up\n All hope of your religion:\n Yet fear them not\n But fear Me.\n This day have I\n Perfected your religion\n For you, completed\n My favour upon you,\n And have chosen for you\n Islam as your religion.\n But if any is forced\n By hunger, with no inclination\n To transgression, God is\n Indeed Oft-forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n4. 5 They ask thee what is\n Lawful to them (as food)\n Say: Lawful unto you\n Are (all) things good and pure:\n And what ye have taught\n Your trained hunting animals\n (To catch) in the manner\n Directed to you by God:\n Eat what they catch for you,\n But pronounce the name\n Of God over it: and fear\n God; for God is swift\n In taking account.\n5. 6 This day are (all) things\n Good and pure made lawful\n Unto you. The food\n Of the People of the Book\n Is lawful unto you\n And yours is lawful\n Unto them.\n (Lawful unto you in marriage)\n Are (not only) chaste women\n Who are believers, but\n Chaste women among\n The People of the Book,\nRevealed before your time,\u2014\n When ye give them\n Their due dowers, and desire\n Chastity, not lewdness,\n Nor secret intrigues.\n If any one rejects faith,\n Fruitless is his work,\n And in the Hereafter\n He will be in the ranks\n Of those who have lost\n (All spiritual good).\n6. 7 O ye who believe!\n When ye prepare\n For prayer, wash\n Your faces, and your hands\n (And arms) to the elbows;\n Rub your heads (with water);\n And (wash) your feet\n To the ankles.\n If ye are in a state\n Of ceremonial impurity,\n Bathe your whole body.\n But if ye are ill,\n Or on a journey,\n Or one of you cometh\n From offices of nature,\n Or ye have been\n In contact with women,\n And ye find no water,\n Then take for yourselves\n Clean sand or earth,\nAnd rub therewith\n Your faces and hands.\n God doth not wish\n To place you in a difficulty,\n But to make you clean,\n And to complete\n His favour to you,\n That ye may be grateful.\n7. 8 And call in remembrance\n The favour of God\n Unto you, and His Covenant,\n Which He ratified\n With you, when ye said:\n \"We hear and we obey\":\n And fear God, for God\n Knoweth well\n The secrets of your hearts.\n8. 9 O ye who believe!\n Stand out firmly\n For God, as witnesses\n To fair dealing, and let not\n The hatred of others\n To you make you swerve\n To wrong and depart from\n Justice. Be just: that is\n Next to Piety: and fear God.\n For God is well-acquainted\n With all that ye do.\n9. 10 To those who believe\n And do deeds of righteousness\n Hath God promised forgiveness\n And a great reward.\n10. 11 Those who reject faith\n And deny Our Signs\n Will be Companions\n Of Hell-fire.\n11. 12 O ye who believe\n Call in remembrance\n The favour of God\n Unto you when\n Certain men formed the design\n To stretch out\n Their hands against you,\n But (God) held back\n Their hands from you:\n So fear God. And on God\n Let Believers put\n (All) their trust.\n12. 13 God did aforetime\n Take a Covenant from\n The Children of Israel,\n And We appointed twelve\n Captains among them.\n And God said: \"I am\n With you: if ye (but)\n Establish regular Prayers,\nPractise regular Charity,\n Believe in My apostles,\n Honour and assist them,\n And loan to God\n A beautiful loan,\n Verily I will wipe out\n From you your evils,\n And admit you to Gardens\n With rivers flowing beneath;\n But if any of you, after this,\n Resisteth faith, he hath truly\n Wandered from the path\n Of rectitude.\"\n13. 14 But because of their breach\n Of their Covenant, We\n Cursed them, and made\n Their hearts grow hard:\n They change the words\n From their (right) places\n And forget a good part\n Of the Message that was\n Sent them, nor wilt thou\n Cease to find them\n Barring a few\u2014ever\n Bent on (new) deceits:\n But forgive them, and overlook\n (Their misdeeds): for God\n Loveth those who are kind.\n14. 15 From those, too, who call\n Themselves Christians,\nWe did take a Covenant,\n But they forgot a good part\n Of the Message that was\n Sent them: so We estranged\n Them, with enmity and hatred\n Between the one and the other,\n To the Day of Judgment.\n And soon will God show\n Them what it is\n They have done.\n15. 16 O People of the Book!\n There hath come to you\n Our Apostle, revealing\n To you much that ye\n Used to hide in the Book,\n And passing over much\n (That is now unnecessary):\n 17 There hath come to you\n From God a (new) light\n And a perspicuous Book,\u2014\n16. 18 Wherewith God guideth all\n Who seek His good pleasure\n To ways of peace and safety,\n And leadeth them out\n Of darkness, by His Will,\n Unto the light,\u2014guideth them\n To a Path that is Straight.\n17. 19 In blasphemy indeed\n Are those that say\n That God is Christ\n The son of Mary.\n Say: \"Who then\n Hath the least power\nAgainst God, if His Will\n Were to destroy Christ\n The son of Mary, his mother,\n And all\u2014every one\n That is on the earth?\n For to God belongeth\n The dominion of the heavens\n And the earth, and all\n That is between. He createth\n What He pleaseth. For God\n Hath power over all things.\"\n18. 20 (Both) the Jews and the Christians\n Say: \"We are sons\n Of God, and His beloved.\"\n Say: \"Why then doth He\n Punish you for your sins?\n Nay, ye are but men,\n Of the men He hath created:\n He forgiveth whom He pleaseth,\n And He punisheth whom He pleaseth:\n And to God belongeth\n The dominion of the heavens\n And the earth, and all\n That is between:\n And unto Him\n Is the final goal (of all)\"\n19. 21 O People of the Book!\n Now hath come unto you,\n Making (things) clear unto you,\n Our Apostle, after the break\nIn (the series of) our apostles,\n Lest ye should say:\n \"There came unto us\n No bringer of glad tidings\n And no warner (from evil)\":\n But now hath come\n Unto you a bringer\n Of glad tidings\n And a warner (from evil).\n And God hath power\n Over all things.\n20. 22 Remember Moses said\n To his people: \"O my People!\n Call in remembrance the favour\n Of God unto you, when He\n Produced prophets among you,\n Made you kings, and gave\n You what He had not given\n To any other among the peoples.\n21. 23 \"O my people! enter\n The holy land which\n God hath assigned unto you,\n And turn not back\n Ignominiously, for then\n Will ye be overthrown,\n To your own ruin.\"\n22. 24 They said: \"O Moses!\n In this land are a people\n Of exceeding strength:\n Never shall we enter it\n Until they leave it:\n If (once) they leave,\n Then shall we enter.\"\n23. 25 (But) among (their) God-fearing men\n Were two on whom\n God had bestowed His grace:\n They said: \"Assault them\n At the (proper) Gate:\n When once ye are in,\n Victory will be yours;\n 26 But on God put your trust\n If ye have faith.\"\n24. 27 They said: \"O Moses!\n While they remain there,\n Never shall we be able\n To enter, to the end of time.\n Go thou, and thy Lord,\n And fight ye two,\n While we sit here\"\n (And watch).\"\n25. 28 He said: \"O my Lord!\n I have power only\nOver myself and my brother:\n So separate us from this\n Rebellious people!\"\n26. 29 God said: \"Therefore\n Will the land be out\n Of their reach for forty years:\n In distraction will they\n Wander through the land:\n But sorrow thou not\n Over these rebellious people.\n27. 30 Recite to them the truth\n Of the story of the two sons\nOf Adam. Behold! they each\n Presented a sacrifice (to God):\n It was accepted from one,\n But not from the other.\n Said the latter: \"Be sure\n I will slay thee.\" \"Surely,\"\n Said the former, \"God\n Doth accept of the sacrifice\n Of those who are righteous.\n28. 31\"If thou dost stretch thy hand\n Against me, to slay me,\n It is not for me to stretch\n My hand against thee\n To slay thee: for I do fear\n God, the Cherisher of the Worlds.\n29. 32 \"For me, I intend to let\n Thee draw on thyself\n My sin as well as thine,\n For thou wilt be among\n The Companions of the Fire,\n And that is the reward\n Of those who do wrong.\"\n30. 33 The (selfish) soul of the other\n Led him to the murder\n Of his brother: he murdered\n Him, and became (himself)\n One of the lost ones.\n31. 34 Then God sent a raven,\n Who scratched the ground,\nTo show him how to hide\n The shame of his brother.\n \"Woe is me!\" said he;\n \"Was I not even able\n To be as this raven,\n And to hide the shame\n Of my brother?\" Then he became\n Full of regrets\u2014\n32. 35 On that account: We ordained\n For the Children of Israel\n That if any one slew\n A person\u2014unless it be\n For murder or for spreading\n Mischief in the land\u2014\n It would be as if\n He slew the whole people:\n And if any one saved a life,\n It would be as if he saved\n The life of the whole people.\n Then although there came\n To them Our Apostles\n With Clear Signs, yet,\n Even after that, many\n Of them continued to commit\n Excesses in the land.\n33. 36 The punishment of those\n Who wage war against God\n And His Apostle, and strive\n With might and main\n For mischief through the land\n Is: execution, or crucifixion,\nOr the cutting off of hands\n And feet from opposite sides,\n Or exile from the land:\n That is their disgrace\n In this world, and\n A heavy punishment is theirs\n In the Hereafter;\n34. 37 Except for those who repent\n Before they fall\n Into your power:\n In that case, know\n That God is Oft-forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n35. 38 O ye who believe!\n Do your duty to God,\n Seek the means\n Of approach unto Him,\n And strive with might\n And main in His cause:\n That ye may presper.\n36. 39 As to those who reject\n Faith,\u2014if they had\n Everything on earth,\n And twice repeated,\n To give as ransom\n For the penalty of the Day\n Of Judgment, it would\n Never be accepted of them.\n Theirs would be\n A grievous Penalty.\n37. 40 Their wish will be\n To get out of the Fire,\n But never will they\n Get out therefrom:\nTheir Penalty will be\n One that endures.\n38. 41 As to the thief,\n Male or female,\n Cut off his or her hands:\n A punishment by way\n Of example, from God,\n For their crime:\n And God is Exalted in Power.\n39. 42 But if the thief repent\n After his crime,\n And amend his conduct,\n God turneth to him\n In forgiveness; for God\n Is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.\n40. 43 Knowest thou not\n That to God (alone)\n Belongeth the dominion\n Of the heavens and the earth?\n He punisheth whom He pleaseth,\n And He forgiveth whom He pleaseth:\n And God hath power\n Over all things.\n41. 44 O Apostle! let not\n Those grieve thee, who race\n Each other into Unbelief:\n (Whether it be) among those\n Who say \"We believe\"\n With their lips but\n Whose hearts have no faith;\nOr it be among the Jews,\u2014\n Men who will listen\n To any lie,\u2014will listen\n Even to others who have\n Never so much as come\n To thee. They change the words\n From their (right) times\n And places; they say,\n \"If ye are given this,\n Take it, but if not,\n Beware!\" If any one's trial\n Is intended by God, thou hast\n No authority in the least\n For him against God.\n For such\u2014it is not\n God's will to purify\n Their hearts. For them\n There is disgrace\n In this world, and\n In the Hereafter\n A heavy punishment.\n42. 45 (They are fond of) listening\n To falsehood, of devouring\n Anything forbidden.\n If they do come to thee,\n Either judge between them,\n Or decline to interfere.\n If thou decline, they cannot\n Hurt thee in the least.\n If thou judge, judge\n In equity between them.\n For God loveth those\n Who judge in equity.\n43. 46 But why do they come\n To thee for decision,\n When they have (their own)\n Law before them?\n Therein is the (plain)\n Command of God; yet\n Even after that, they would\n Turn away. For they\n Are not (really)\n People of Faith.\n44. 47 It was We who revealed\n The Law (to Moses): therein\n Was guidance and light.'\n By its standard have been judged\n The Jews, by the Prophets\n Who bowed (as in Islam)\n To God's Will, by the Rabbis\n And the Doctors of Law:\nFor to them was entrusted\n The protection of God's Book,\n And they were witnesses thereto:\n Therefore fear not men,\n But fear Me, and sell not\n My Signs for a miserable price.\n If any do fail to judge\n By (the light of) what God\n Hath revealed, they are\n (No better than) Unbelievers.\n45. 48 We ordained therein for them:\n \"Life for life, eye for eye,\n Nose for nose, ear for ear,\n Tooth for tooth, and wounds\n Equal for equal.\" But if\n Any one remits the retaliation\n Byway of charity, it is\n An act of atonement for himself.\n And if any fail to judge\n By (the light of) what God\n Hath revealed, they are\n (No better than) wrong-doers.\n46. 49 And in their footsteps\n We sent Jesus the son\nOf Mary, confirming\n The Law that had come\n Before him: We sent him\n The Gospel: therein\n Was guidance and light,\n And confirmation of the Law\n That had come before him:\n A guidance and an admonition\n To those who fear God.\n47. 50 Let the People of the Gospel\n Judge by what God hath revealed\n Therein. If any do fail\n To judge by (the light of)\n What God hath revealed,\n They are (no better than)\n Those who rebel.\n48. 51 To thee We sent the Scripture\n In truth, confirming\n The scripture that came\n Before it, and guarding it's\n In safety: so judge\n Between them by what\n God hath revealed,\n And follow not their vain\n Desires, diverging\n From the Truth that hath come\n To thee. To each among you\n Have We prescribed a Law\n And an Open Way.\n If God had so willed.\n He would have made you\n A single People, but (His\nPlan is) to test you in what\n He hath given you: so strive\n As in a race in all virtues.\n The goal of you all is to God;\n It is He that will show you\n The truth of the matters\n In which ye dispute;\n49. 52 And this (He commands):\n Judge thou between them\n By what God hath revealed,\n And follow not their vain\n Desires, but beware of them\n Lest they beguile thee\n From any of that (teaching)\n Which God hath sent down\n To thee. And if they turn\n Away, be assured that\n For some of their crimes\n It is God's purpose to punish\n Them. And truly most men\n Are rebellious.\n50. 53 Do they then seek after\n A judgment of (the Days\n Of) Ignorance? But who,\n For a people whose faith\n Is assured, can give\n Better judgment than God?\n51. 54 O ye who believe!\n Take not the Jews\n And the Christians\n For your friends and protectors:\n They are but friends and protectors)\n To each other. And he\nAmongst you that turns to them\n (For friendship) is of them.\n Verily God guideth not\n A people unjust.\n52. 55 Those in whose hearts\n Is a disease\u2014thou seest\n How eagerly they run about\n Amongst them, saying:\n \"We do fear lest a change\n Of fortune bring us disaster.\"\n Ah! perhaps God will give\n (Thee) victory, or a decision\n According to His Will.\n Then will they repent\n Of the thoughts which they secretly\n Harboured in their hearts.\n53. 56 And those who believe\n Will say: \"Are these\n The men who swore\n Their strongest oaths by God,\n That they were with you?\"\n All that they do\n Will be in vain,\n And they will fall\n Into (nothing but) ruin.\n54. 57 O ye who believe!\n If any from among you\n Turn back from his Faith,\n Soon will God produce\n A people whom He will love\n As they will love Him,\u2014\n Lowly with the Believers,\n Mighty against the Rejecters,\n Fighting in the Way of God,\n And never afraid\n Of the reproaches\nOf such as find fault.\n That is the Grace of God,\n Which He will bestow\n On whom He pleaseth.\n And God encompasseth all,\n And He knoweth all things.\n55. 58 Your (real) friends are\n (No less than) God,\n His Apostle, and the (Fellowship\n Of) Believers,\u2014those who\n Establish regular prayers\n And regular charity,\n And they bow\n Down humbly (in worship).\n56. 59 As to those who turn\n (For friendship) to God,\n His Apostle, and the (Fellowship\n Of) Believers,\u2014it is\n The Fellowship of God\n That must certainly triumph.\n57. 60 O ye who believe!\n Take not for friends\n And protectors those\n Who take your religion\n For a mockery or sport,\u2014\n Whether among those\n Who received the Scripture\n Before you, or among those\nWho reject Faith;\n But fear ye God,\n If ye have Faith (indeed).\n58. 61 When ye proclaim\n Your call to prayer,\n They take it (but)\n As mockery and sport;\n That is because they are\n A people without understanding.\n59. 62 Say: \"O People of the Book!\n Do ye disapprove of us\n For no other reason than\n That we believe in God,\n And the revelation\n That hath come to us\n And that which came\n Before (us), and (perhaps)\n That most of you\n Are rebellious and disobedient?\n60. 63 Say: \"Shall I point out\n To you something much worse\n Than this, (as judged)\n By the treatment it received\n From God? Those who\n Incurred the curse of God\n And His wrath, those of whom some\n He transformed into apes and swine,\n Those who worshipped Evil;\u2014\n These are (many times) worse\n In rank, and far more astray\n From the even Path!\"\n61. 64 When they come to thee,\n They say: \"We believe\":\nBut in fact they enter\n With a mind against Faith,\n And they go out\n With the same.\n But God knoweth fully\n All that they hide.\n62. 65 Many of them dost thou\n See, racing each other\n In sin and rancour,\n And their eating of things\n Forbidden. Evil indeed\n Are the things that they do.\n63. 66 Why do not the Rabbis\n And the doctors of law forbid\n Them from their (habit\n Of) uttering sinful words\n And eating things forbidden?\n Evil indeed are their works.\n64. 67 The Jews say: \"God's hand\n Is tied up.\" Be their hands\n Tied up and be they accursed\n For the (blasphemy) they utter.\n Nay, both His hands\n Are widely outstretched:\n He giveth and spendeth\n (Of His bounty) as He pleaseth.\n But the revelation that\n Cometh to thee from God\n Increaseth in most of them\n Their obstinate rebellion\n And blasphemy. Amongst them\n We have placed enmity\nAnd hatred till the Day\n Of Judgment. Every time\n They kindle the fire of war,\n God doth extinguish it;\n But they (ever) strive\n To do mischief on earth.\n And God loveth not\n Those who do mischief.\n65. 68 If only the People of the Book\n Had believed and been righteous,\n We should indeed have\n Blotted out their iniquities\n And admitted them\n To Gardens of Bliss.\n66. 69 If only they had stood fast\n By the Law, the Gospel,\n And all the revelation that was sent\n To them from their Lord,\n They would have enjoyed\n Happiness from every side.'\n There is from among them\n A party on the right course:\n But many of them\n Follow a course that is evil.\n67. 70 O Apostle! proclaim\n The (Message) which hath been\n Sent to thee from thy Lord.\n If thou didst not, thou\nWouldst not have fulfilled\n And proclaimed His Mission.\n And God will defend thee\n From men (who mean mischief).\n For God guideth not\n Those who reject Faith.\n68. 71 Say: \"O People of the Book!\n Ye have no ground\n To stand upon unless\n Ye stand fast by the Law,\n The Gospel, and all the revelation\n That has come to you from\n Your Lord.\" It is the revelation\n That cometh to thee from\n Thy Lord, that increaseth in most\n Of them their obstinate\n Rebellion and blasphemy.\n But sorrow thou not\n Over (these) people without Faith.\n69. 72 Those who believe (in the Qur-\u0101n),\n Those who follow the Jewish (scriptures),\n And the Sabians and the Christians,\u2014\n Any who believe in God\n And the Last Day,\n And work righteousness,\u2014\n On them shall be no fear,\n Nor shall they grieve.\n70. 73 We took the Covenant\n Of the Children of Israel\n And sent them apostles.\n Every time there came\n To them an apostle\n With what they themselves\n Desired not\u2014some\n (Of these) they called\nImpostors, and some they\n (Go so far as to) slay.\n71. 74 They thought there would be\n No trial (or punishment);\n So they became blind and deaf;\n Yet God (in mercy) turned\n To them; yet again many\n Of them became blind and deaf.\n But God sees well\n All that they do.\n72. 75 They do blaspheme who say:\n \"God is Christ the son\n Of Mary\" But said Christ:\n \"O Children of Israel!\n Worship God, my Lord\n And your Lord.\" Whoever\n Joins other gods with God,\u2014\n God will forbid him\n The Garden, and the Fire\n Will be his abode. There will\n For the wrong-doers\n Be no one to help.\n73. 76 They do blaspheme who say:\n God is one of three\n In a Trinity: for there is\n No god except One God.\n If they desist not\n From their word (of blasphemy),\n Verily a grievous penalty\n Will befall the blasphemers\n Among them.\n74. 77 Why turn they not to God,\n And seek His forgiveness?\n For God is Oft-forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n75. 78 Christ the son of Mary\n Was no more than\n An Apostle; many were\n The apostles that passed away\nBefore him. His mother\n Was a woman of truth.\n They had both to eat\n Their (daily) food.\n See how God doth make\n His Signs clear to them;\n Yet see in what ways\n They are deluded\n Away from the truth!\n76. 79 Say: \"Will ye worship,\n Besides God, something\n Which hath no power either\n To harm or benefit you?\n But God,\u2014He it is\n That heareth and knoweth\n All things.\"\n77. 80 Say: \"O People of the Book!\n Exceed not in your religion\n The bounds (of what is proper),\n Trespassing beyond the truth,\n Nor follow the vain desires\n Of people who went wrong\n In times gone by,\u2014who misled\n Many, and strayed (themselves)\n From the even Way.\n78. 81 Curses were pronounced\n On those among the Children\n Of Israel who rejected Faith,\n By the tongue of David\n And of Jesus the son of Mary:\n Because they disobeyed\n And persisted in Excesses.\n79. 82 Nor did they (usually)\n Forbid one another\n The iniquities which they\n Committed: evil indeed\n Were the deeds which they did.\n80. 83 Thou seest many of them\n Turning in friendship\n To the Unbelievers.\n Evil indeed are (the works) which\n Their souls have sent forward\n Before them (with the result),\n That God's wrath\n Is on them,\n And in torment\n Will they abide.\n81. 84 If only they had believed\n In God, in the Apostle,\n And in what hath been\n Revealed to him, never\n Would they have taken\n Them for friends and protectors,\n But most of them are\n Rebellious wrong-doers.\n82. 85 Strongest among men in enmity\n To the Believers wilt thou\n Find the Jews and Pagans;\n And nearest among them in love\n To the Believers wilt thou\n Find those who say,\n \"We are Christians\":\n Because amongst these are\n Men devoted to learning\n And men who have renounced\n The world, and they\n Are not arrogant.\n83. 86 And when they listen\n To the revelation received\n By the Apostle, thou wilt\n See their eyes overflowing\n With tears, for they\n Recognise the truth:\n They pray: \"Our Lord!\n We believe; write us\n Down among the witnesses.\n84. 87 \"What cause can we have\n Not to believe in God\n And the truth which has\n Come to us, seeing that\n We long for our Lord\n To admit us to the company\n Of the righteous?\"\n85. 88 And for this their prayer\n Hath God rewarded them\n With Gardens, with rivers\n Flowing underneath,\u2014their eternal\n Home. Such is the recompense\n Of those who do good.\n86. 89 But those who reject Faith\n And belie Our Signs,\u2014\n They shall be Companions\n Of Hell-fire.\n87. 90 O ye who believe!\n Make not unlawful\nThe good things which God\n Hath made lawful for you,\n But commit no excess:\n For God loveth not\n Those given to excess.\n88. 91 Eat of the things which\n God hath provided for you,\n Lawful and good; but fear\n God, in Whom ye believe.\n89. 92 God will not call you\n To account for what is\n Futile in your oaths,\n But He will call you\n To account for your deliberate\n Oaths: for expiation, feed\n Ten indigent persons,\n On a scale of the average\n For the food of your families;\n Or clothe them; or give\n A slave his freedom.\n If that is beyond your means,\n Fast for three days.\n That is the expiation\n For the oaths ye have sworn.\n But keep to your oaths.\n Thus doth God make clear\n To you His Signs, that ye\n May be grateful.\n90. 93 O ye who believe!\n Intoxicants and gambling,\n(Dedication of) stones,\n And (divination by) arrows,\n Are an abomination,\u2014\n Of Satan's handiwork:\n Eschew such (abomination),\n That ye may prosper.\n91. 94 Satan's plan is (but)\n To excite enmity and hatred\n Between you, with intoxicants\n And gambling, and hinder you\n From the remembrance\n Of God, and from prayer:\n Will ye not then abstain?\n92. 95 Obey God, and obey the Apostle,\n And beware (of evil):\n If ye do turn back,\n Know ye that it is\n Our Apostle's duty\n To proclaim (the Message)\n In the clearest manner.\n93. 96 On those who believe\n And do deeds of righteousness\n There is no blame\n For what they ate (in the past),\n When they guard themselves\n From evil, and believe,\n And do deeds of righteousness,\u2014\n (Or) again, guard themselves\n From evil and believe,\u2014\n (Or) again, guard themselves\n From evil and do good.\nFor God loveth those\n Who do good.\n94. 97 O ye who believe!\n God doth but make a trial of you\n In a little matter\n Of game well within reach\n Of your hands and your lances,\n That He may test\n Who feareth Him unseen:\n Any who transgress\n Thereafter, will have\n A grievous penalty.\n95. 98 O ye who believe!\n Kill not game\n While in the Sacred\n Precincts or in pilgrim garb.\n If any of you doth so\n Intentionally, the compensation\n Is an offering, brought\n To the Ka\u2019ba, of a domestic animal\n Equivalent to the one he killed,\nAs adjudged by two just men\n Among you; or by way\n Of atonement, the feeding\n Of the indigent; or its\n Equivalent in fasts: that he\n May taste of the penalty\n Of his deed. God\n Forgives what is past:\n For repetition God will\n Exact from him the penalty.\n For God is Exalted,\n And Lord of Retribution.\n96. 99 Lawful to you is the pursuit\n Of water-game and its use\n For food,\u2014for the benefit\n Of yourselves and those who\n Travel; but forbidden\n Is the pursuit of land-game;\u2014\n As long as ye are\n In the Sacred Precincts\n Or in pilgrim garb.\n And fear God, to Whom\n Ye shall be gathered back.\n97. 100 God made the Ka\u2019ba,\n The Sacred House, an asylum\n Of security for men, as\n Also the Sacred Months,\n The animals for offerings,\n And the garlands that mark them:\n That ye may know\n That God hath knowledge\n Of what is in the heavens\n And on earth and that God\n Is well acquainted\n With all things.\n98. 101 Know ye that God\n Is strict in punishment\nAnd that God is\n Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.\n99. 102 The Apostle's duty is\n But to proclaim (the Message).\n But God knoweth all\n That ye reveal and ye conceal.\n100. 103 Say: \"Not equal are things\n That are bad and things\n That are good, even though\n The abundance of the bad\n May dazzle thee;\n So fear God, O ye\n That understand;\n That (so) ye may prosper.\"\n101. 104 O ye who believe!\n Ask not questions\n About things which,\n If made plain to you,\n May cause you trouble.\n But if ye ask about things\n When the Qur-\u0101n is being\n Revealed, they will be\n Made plain to you,\n God will forgive those:\n For God is Oft-forgiving,\n Most Forbearing.\n102. 105 Some people before you\n Did ask such questions,\nAnd on that account\n Lost their faith.\n103. 106 It was not God\n Who instituted (superstitions\n Like those of) a slit-ear\n She-camel, or a she-camel\n Let loose for free pasture,\n Or idol sacrifices for\n Twin-births in animals,\n Or stallion-camels\n Freed from work\n It is blasphemers\n Who Invent a lie\n Against God; but most\n Of them lack wisdom.\n104. 107 When it is said to them:\n \"Come to what God\n Hath revealed; come\n To the Apostle\":\n They say: \"Enough for us\n Are the ways we found\n Our fathers following.\"\n What! even though their fathers\n Were void of knowledge\n And guidance?\n105. 108 O ye who believe!\n Guard your own souls:\n If ye follow (right) guidance,\n No hurt can come to you\n From those who stray.\n The goal of you all\n Is to God: it is He\n That will show you\n The truth of all\n That ye do.\n106. 109 O ye who believe!\n When death approaches\n Any of you, (take) witnesses\n Among yourselves when making\n Bequests,\u2014two just men\n Of your own (brotherhood)\n Or others from outside\n If ye are journeying\n Through the earth,\n And the chance of death\n Befalls you (thus).\n If ye doubt (their truth),\n Detain them both\n After prayer, and let them both\n Swear by God:\n \"We wish not in this\n For any worldly gain,\n Even though the (beneficiary)\n Be our near relation:\n We shall hide not\n The evidence before God:\n If we do, then behold!\n The sin be upon us!\"\n107. 110 But if it gets known\n That these two were guilty\n Of the sin (of perjury),\n Let two others stand forth\n In their places,\u2014nearest\n In kin from among those\n Who claim a lawful right:\n Let them swear by God:\n \"We affirm that our witness\n Is truer than that\n Of those two, and that we\n Have not trespassed (beyond\n The truth): if we did,\n Behold! the wrong be\n Upon us!\"\n108. 111 That is most suitable:\n That they may give the evidence\nIn its true nature and shape,\n Or else they would fear\n That other oaths would be\n Taken after their oaths.\n Hut fear God, and listen\n (To His counsel): for God\n Guideth not a rebellious people:\n109. 112 One day will God\n Gather the apostles together,\n And ask: \"What was\n The response ye received\n (From men to your teaching)?\"\n They will say: \"We\n Have no knowledge: it is Thou\n Who knowest in full\n All that is hidden.\"\n110. 113 When will God say:\n \"O Jesus the son of Mary!\n Recount My favour\"'\n To thee and to thy mother.\n Behold! I strengthened thee\n With the holy spirit,\n So that thou didst speak\n To the people in childhood\n And in maturity.\n Behold! I taught thee\n The Book and Wisdom,\n The Law and the Gospel.\n And behold! thou makest\n Out of clay, as it were,\nThe figure of a bird,\n By My leave,\n And thou breathest into it,\n And it becometh a bird\n By My leave,\n And thou healest those\n Born blind, and the lepers,\n By My leave.\n And behold! thou\n Bringest forth the dead\n By My leave ego\n And behold! I did\n Restrain the Children of Israel\n From (violence to) thee\n When thou didst show them\n The Clear Signs,\n And the unbelievers among them\n Said: 'This is nothing\n But evident magic.\n111. 114 \"And behold! I inspired\n The Disciples to have faith\n In Me and Mine Apostle:\n They said, 'We have faith,\n And do thou bear witness\n That we bow to God\n As Muslims'.\"\n112. 115 Behold! the Disciples said:\n \"O Jesus the son of Mary!\n Can thy Lord send down to us\n A Table set (with viands)\nFrom heaven?\" Said Jesus:\n \"Fear God, if ye have faith.\"\n113. 116 They said: \"We only wish\n To eat thereof and satisfy\n Our hearts, and to know\n That thou hast indeed\n Told us the truth; and\n That we ourselves may be\n Witnesses to the miracle.\"\n114. 117 Said Jesus the son of Mary:\n \"O God our Lord!\n Send us from heaven\n A Table set (with viands),\n That there may be for us\n For the first and the last of us\u2014\n A solemn festival\n And a. Sign from Thee;\n And provide for our sustenance,\n For Thou art the best\n Sustainer (of our needs).\"\n115. 118 God said: \"I will\n Send it down unto you:\n But if any of you\n After that resisteth faith,\n I will punish him\n With a penalty such\n As I have not inflicted\n On any one among\nAll the peoples.\"\n116. 119 And behold! God will say:\n \"O Jesus the son of Mary!\n Didst thou say unto men,\n Worship me and my mother\n As gods in derogation of God'?\"\n He will say: \"Glory to Thee!\n Never could I say\n What I had no right\n (To say). Had I said\n Such a thing, Thou wouldst\n Indeed have known it.\n Thou knowest what is\n In my heart, though I\n Know not what is\n In Thine. For Thou\n Knowest in full\n All that is hidden.\n117. 120 \"Never said I to them\n Aught except what Thou\n Didst command me\n To say, to wit, 'Worship\n God, my Lord and your Lord';\n And I was a witness\n Over them whilst I dwelt\n Amongst them; when thou\n Didst take me up\n Thou wast the Watcher\n Over them, and Thou\n Art a witness to all things.\n118. 121 \"If Thou dost punish them,\n They are Thy servants:\nIf Thou dost forgive them,\n Thou art the Exalted in power,\n The Wise.\"\n119. 122 God will say: \"This is\n A day on which\n The truthful will profit\n From their truth: theirs\n Are Gardens, with rivers\n Flowing beneath,\u2014their eternal\n Home: God well-pleased\n With them, and they with God:\n That is the great Salvation,\n (The fulfilment of all desires).\n120. 123 To God doth belong the dominion\n Of the heavens and the earth,\n And all that is therein,\n And it is He who hath power\n Over all things.","title":"The Holy Quran: S\u016bra V.
