Alif, L\u0101m, M\u012bm, \u1e62\u0101d.\n2. A Book revealed unto thee,\u2014\n So let thy heart be oppressed'\n No more by any difficulty\n On that account,\n That with it thou mightest\n Warn (the erring) and teach\n The Believers.\n3. Follow (O men!) the revelation\n Given unto you from your Lord,\n And follow not, as friends\n Or protectors, other than Him.\n Little it is ye remember\n Of admonition.\n4. How many towns have We\n Destroyed (for their sins)?\n Our punishment took them\n On a sudden by night\n Or while they slept\n For their afternoon rest.\n5. When (thus) Our punishment\n Took them, no cry\n Did they utter but this:\n \"Indeed we did wrong.\"\n6. When shall we question\n Those to whom Our Message\n Was sent and those by whom\n We sent it.\n7. And verily We shall recount\n Their whole story\n With knowledge, for We\n Were never absent\n (At any time or place).\n8. The balance that day\n Will be true (to a nicety):\n Those whose scale (of good)\n Will be heavy, will prosper:\n9. Those whose scale will be light,\n Will find their souls\n In perdition, for that they\n Wrongfully treated Our Signs.\n10. It is We Who have\n Placed you with authority\n On earth, and provided\n You therein with means\n For the fulfilment of your life:\n Small are the thanks\n That ye give!\n11. It is We Who created you\n And gave you shape;\n Then We bade the angels\n Bow down to Adam, and they\n Bowed down; not so Ibl\u012bs;\n He refused to be of those\n Who bow down.\n12. (God) said: \"What prevented\n Thee from bowing down\n When I commanded thee?\"\n He said: \"I am better\n Than he: Thou didst create\n Me from fire, and him from clay.\"\n13. (God) said: \"Get thee down\n From this: it is not\n For thee to be arrogant\n Here: get out, for thou\n Art of the meanest (of creatures).\"\n14. He said: \"Give me respite\n Till the day they are\n Raised up.\"\n15. (God) said: \"Be thou\n Among those who have respite.\"\n16. He said: \"Because thou\n Hast thrown me out\n Of the Way, lo! I will\n Lie in wait for them\n On Thy Straight Way:\n17. \"Then will I assault them\n From before them and behind them,\n From their right and their left:\n Nor wilt Thou find,\n In most of them,\n Gratitude (for Thy mercies).\n18. (God) said: \"Get out\n From this, disgraced\n And expelled. If any\n Of them follow thee,\u2014\n Hell will I fill\n With you all.\n19. \"O Adam! dwell thou\n And thy wife in the Garden,\n And enjoy (its good things)\n As ye wish: but approach not\n This tree, or ye run\n Into harm and transgression.\"\n20. Then began Satan to whisper\n Suggestions to them, bringing\n Openly before their minds\n All their shame\nThat was hidden from them\n (Before): he said: \"Your Lord\n Only forbade you this tree,\n Lest ye should become angels\n Or such beings as live for ever.\"\n21. And he swore to them\n Both, that he was\n Their sincere adviser.\n22. So by deceit he brought about\n Their fall: when they\n Tasted of the tree,\n Their shame became manifest\n To them, and they began\n To sew together the leaves\n Of the Garden over their bodies.\n And their Lord called\n Unto them: \"Did I not\n Forbid you that tree,\n And tell you that Satan\n Was an avowed\n Enemy unto you?\"\n23. They said: \"Our Lord!\n We have wronged our own souls:\n If Thou forgive us not\n And bestow not upon us\n Thy Mercy, we shall\n Certainly be lost.\"\n24. (God) said: \"Get ye down,\n With enmity between yourselves.\n On earth will be your dwelling-place\n And your means of livelihood,\u2014\n For a time.\"\n25. He said: \"Therein shall ye\n Live, and therein shall ye\n Die; but from it shall ye\n Be taken out (at last).\"\n26. O ye Children of Adam!\n We have bestowed raiment\n Upon you to cover\n Your shame, as well as\n To be an adornment to you.\n But the raiment of righteousness,\u2014\n That is the best.\n Such are among the Signs\n Of God, that they\n May receive admonition!\n27. O ye Children of Adam!\n Let not Satan seduce you,\n In the same manner as\n He got your parents out\n Of the Garden, stripping them\n Of their raiment, to expose\n Their shame: for he\n And his tribe watch you\n From a position where ye\n Cannot see them: We made\n The Evil Ones friends\n (Only) to those without Faith.\n28. When they do aught\n That is shameful, they say:\n \"We found our fathers\n Doing so\"; and \"God\n Commanded us thus\":\n Say: \"Nay, God never\nCommands what is shameful:\n Do ye say of God\n What ye know not?\"\n29. Say: \"My Lord hath commanded\n Justice; and that ye set\n Your whole selves (to Him)\n At every time and place\n Of prayer, and call upon Him,\n Making your devotion sincere\n As in His sight:\n Such as He created you\n In the beginning, so\n Shall ye return.\"\n30. Some He hath guided:\n Others have (by their choice)\n Deserved the loss of their way;\n In that they took\n The Evil Ones, in preference\n To God, for their friends\n And protectors, and think\n That they receive guidance.\n31. O Children of Adam!\n Wear your beautiful apparel\n At every time and place\n Of prayer: eat and drink:\n But waste not by excess,\n For God loveth not the wasters.\n32. Say: Who hath forbidden\n The beautiful (gifts) of God,\n Which He hath produced\n For His servants,\n And the things, clean and pure,\n (Which He hath provided)\n For sustenance?\n Say: They are, in the life\n Of this world, for those\n Who believe, (and) purely\n For them on the Day\n Of Judgment. Thus do We\n Explain the Signs in detail\n For those who understand.\n33. Say: The things that my Lord\n Hath indeed forbidden are:\n Shameful deeds, whether open\n Or secret; sins and trespasses\n Against truth or reason; assigning\n Of partners to God, for which\n He hath given no authority;\n And saying things about God\n Of which ye have no knowledge.\n34. To every People is a term.\n Appointed: when their term\n Is reached, not an hour\n Can they cause delay,\n Nor (an hour) can they\n Advance (it in anticipation).\n35. O ye Children of Adam!\n Whenever there come to you\n Apostles from amongst you,\n Rehearsing My Signs unto you,\n Those who are righteous\n And mend (their lives),\u2014\n On them shall be no fear\n Nor shall they grieve.\n36. But those who reject\n Our Signs and treat them\n With arrogance,\u2014they\n Are Companions of the Fire,\n To dwell therein (for ever).\n37. Who is more unjust\n Than one who invents\n A lie against God\n Or rejects His Signs?\n For such, their portion\n Appointed must reach them\n From the Book (of Decrees):\n Until, when Our messengers\n (Of death) arrive and take\n Their souls, they say:\n \"Where are the things\n That ye used to invoke\n Besides God?\"\n They will reply, \"They\nHave left us in the lurch,\"\n And they will bear witness\n Against themselves, that they\n Had rejected God.\n38. He will say: \"Enter ye\n In the company of\n The Peoples who passed away\n Before you\u2014men and Jinns,\u2014\n Into the Fire. Every time\n A new People enters,\n It curses its sister-People\n (That went before), until\n They follow each other, all\n Into the Fire. Saith the last\n About the first: \"Our Lord!\n It is these that misled us:\n So give them a double\n Penalty in the Fire.\"\n He will say: \"Doubled\n For all\": but this\n Ye do not understand.\n39. Then the first will say\n To the last: \"See then!\n No advantage have ye\n Over us; so taste ye\n Of the Penalty for all\n That ye did!\"\n40. To those who reject\n Our Signs and treat them\n With arrogance, no opening\n Will there be of the gates\nOf heaven, nor will they\n Enter the Garden, until\n The camel can pass\n Through the eye of the needle:\n Such is Our reward\n For those in sin.\n41. For them there is\n Hell, as a couch\n (Below) and folds and folds\n Of covering above: such\n Is Our requital of those\n Who do wrong.\n42. But those who believe\n And work righteousness,\u2014\n No burden do We place\n On any soul, but that\n Which it can bear,\n They will be Companions\n Of the Garden, therein\n To dwell (for ever).\n43. And We shall remove\n From their hearts any\n Lurking sense of injury;\u2014\n Beneath them will be\n Rivers flowing;\u2014and they\n Shall say: \"Praise be, to God,\n Who hath guided us\n To this (felicity): never\n Could we have found\n Guidance, had it not been\n For the guidance of God:\n Indeed it was the truth.\n That the Apostles of our Lord\n Brought unto us.\" And they\n Shall hear the cry:\n \"Behold! the Garden before you!\nYe have been made\n Its inheritors, for your\n Deeds (of righteousness).\"\n44. The Companions of the Garden\n Will call out to the Companions\n Of the Fire: \"We have\n Indeed found the promises\n Of our Lord to us true:\n Have you also found\n Your Lord's promises true?\"\n They shall say, \"Yes\"; but\n A Crier shall proclaim\n Between them: \"The curse\n Of God is on the wrong-doers;\u2014\n45. \"Those who would hinder (men)\n From the path of God\n And would seek in it\n Something crooked:\n They were those who\n Denied the Hereafter.\"\n46. Between them shall be\n A veil, and on the Heights\nWill be men\n Who would know every one\n By his marks: they will call\n Out to the Companions\n Of the Garden, \"Peace on you\":\n They will not have entered,\n But they will have\n An assurance (thereof.)\n47. When their eyes shall be turned\n Towards the Companions\n Of the Fire, they will say:\n \"Our Lord! send us not\n To the company\n Of the wrong-doers.\"\n48. The men on the Heights\n Will call to certain men\n Whom they will know\n From their m arks, saying:\n \"Of what profit to you\n Were your hoards and your\n Arrogant ways?\n49. \"Behold! are these not\n The men whom you swore\n That God with His Mercy\n Would never bless?\n Enter ye the Garden:\n No fear shall be on you,\n Nor shall ye grieve.\"\n50. The Companions of the Fire\n Will call to the Companions\n Of the Garden: \"Pour down\n To us water or anything\nThat God doth provide\n For your sustenance.\"\n They will say: \"Both\n These things hath God forbidden\n To those who rejected Him;\u2014\n51. \"Such as took their religion\n To be mere amusement\n And play, and were deceived\n By the life of the world.\"\n That day shall We forget them\n As they forgot the meeting\n Of this day of theirs,\n And as they were wont\n To reject Our Signs.\n52. For We had certainly\n Sent unto them a Book,\n Based on knowledge,\n Which We explained\n In detail,\u2014a guide\n And a mercy\n To all who believe.\n53. Do they just wait\n For the final fulfilment\n Of the event? On the day\n The event is finally fulfilled,\n Those who disregarded it\n Before will say: \"The apostles\n Of our Lord did indeed\n Bring true (tidings). Have we\n No intercessors now to intercede\n On our behalf? Or could we\nBe sent back? Then should eve\n Behave differently from our\n Behaviour in the past.\"\n In fact they will have lost\n Their souls, and the things\n They invented will leave\n Them in the lurch.\n54. Your Guardian-Lord\n Is God, Who created\n The heavens and the earth\n In six Days, and is firmly\n Established on the Throne\n (Of authority): He draweth\n The night as a veil\n O'er the day, each seeking\n The other in rapid succession:\n He created the sun,\n The moon, and the stars,\n (All) governed by laws\n Under His Command.\n Is it not His to create\n And to govern? Blessed\n Be God, the Cherisher\n And Sustainer of the Worlds!\n55. Call on your Lord\n With humility and in private:\nFor God loveth not\n Those who trespass beyond bounds.\n56. Do no mischief on the earth,\n After it hath been\n Set in order, but call\n On Him with fear\n And longing (in your hearts):\n For the Mercy of God\n Is (always) near\n To those who do good.\n57. It is He Who sendeth\n The Winds like heralds\n Of glad tidings, going before\n His Mercy: when they have\n Carried the heavy-laden\n Clouds, We drive them\n To a land that is dead,\n Make rain to descend thereon,\n And produce every kind\n Of harvest therewith: thus\n Shall We raise up the dead:\n Perchance ye may remember.\n58. From the land that is clean\n And good, by the Will\n Of its Cherisher, springs up\n Produce, (rich) after its kind:\nBut from the land that is\n Bad, springs up nothing\n But that which is niggardly:\n Thus do we explain the Signs\n By various (symbols) to those\n Who are grateful.\n59. We sent Noah to his people.\n He said: \"O my people!\n Worship God! ye have\n No other god but Him.\n I fear for you the Punishment\n Of a dreadful Day!\n60. The leaders of his people\n Said: \"Ah! we see thee\n Evidently wandering (in mind).\"\n61. He said: \"O my people!\n No wandering is there\n In my (mind): on the contrary\n I am an apostle from\n The Lord and Cherisher\n Of the Worlds!\n62.\"I but fulfil towards you\n The duties of my Lord's mission:\n Sincere is my advice to you,\n And I know from God\n Something that ye know not.\n63. \"Do ye wonder that\n There hath come to you\n A message from your Lord,\n Through a man of your own\n People, to warn you,\u2014\n So that ye may fear God\n And haply receive His Mercy?\"\n64. But they rejected him,\n And We delivered him,\n And those with him,\n In the Ark:\n But We overwhelmed\n In the Flood those\n Who rejected Our Signs.\n They were indeed\n A blind people!\n65. To the \u2019Ad people,\n (We sent) H\u016bd, one\nOf their (own) brethren:\n He said: \"O my people!\n Worship God! ye have\n No other god but Him.\n Will ye not fear (God)?\n66. The leaders of the unbelievers\n Among his people said:\n \"Ah! we see thou art\n An imbecile!\" and \"We think\n Thou art a liar!\"\n67. He said: \"O my people!\n I am no imbecile, but\n (I am) an apostle from\n The Lord and Cherisher\n Of the Worlds!\n68. \"I but fulfil towards you\n The duties of my Lord's mission:\n I am to you a sincere\n And trustworthy adviser.\n69. \"Do ye wonder that\n There hath come to you\n A message from your Lord\n Through a man of your own\n People, to warn you?\n Call in remembrance\n That He made you\n Inheritors after the people\n Of Noah, and gave you\n A stature tall among the nations.\n Call in remembrance\n The benefits (ye have received)\n From God: that so\n Ye may prosper.\"\n70. They said: \"Comest thou\n To us, that we may worship\n God alone, and give up\n The cult of our fathers?\n Bring us what thou\n Threatenest us with,\n If so be that thou\n Tellest the truth!\"\n71. He said: \"Punishment\n And wrath have already\n Come upon you from your Lord\n Dispute ye with me\n Over names which ye\n Have devised\u2014ye\n And your fathers,\n Without authority from God?\n Then wait: I am\n Amongst you, also waiting.\"\n72. We saved him and those\n Who adhered to him,\n By Our Mercy, and We\n Cut off the roots of those\n Who rejected Our Signs\n And did not believe.\n73. To the Tham\u016bd people\n (We sent) \u1e62ali\u1e25, one\nOf their own brethren:\n He said: \"O my people!\n Worship God; ye have\n No other god but Him.\n Now hath come unto you\n A clear (Sign) from your Lord!\n This she-camel of God\n Is a Sign unto you:\n So leave her to graze\n In God's earth, and let her\n Come to no harm,\n Or ye shall be seized\n With a grievous punishment.\n74. \"And remember how He\n Made you inheritors\n After the \u2019Ad people\n And gave you habitations\n In the land: ye build\n For yourselves palaces and castles\n In (open) plains, and carve out\n Homes in the mountains;\n So bring to remembrance\n The benefits (ye have received)\n From God, and refrain\n From evil and mischief\n On the earth.\"\n75. The leaders of the arrogant\n Party among his people said\nTo those who were reckoned\n Powerless\u2014those among them\n Who believed: \"Know ye\n Indeed that \u1e62ali\u1e25 is\n An apostle from his Lord?\"\n They said: \"We do indeed\n Believe in the revelation\n Which hath been sent\n Through him.\"\n76. The arrogant party said:\n \"For our part, we reject\n What ye believe in.\"\n77. Then they ham-strung\n The she-camel, and insolently\n Defied the order of their Lord,\n Saying: \"O \u1e62ali\u1e25! bring about\n Thy threats, if thou art\n An apostle (of God)!\"\n78. So the earthquake took them\n Unawares, and they lay\n Prostrate in their homes\n In the morning!\n79. So \u1e62ali\u1e25 left them,\n Saying: \"O my people!\n I did indeed convey to you\n The message for which\n I was sent by my Lord:\n I gave you good counsel,\n But ye love not good counsellors!\"\n80. We also (sent) L\u016b\u1e6d:\n He said to his people:\n \"Do ye commit lewdness\n Such as no people\n In creation (ever) committed\n Before you?\n81. \"For ye practise your lusts\n On men in preference\n To women: ye are indeed\n A people transgressing\n Beyond bounds.\"\n82. And his people gave\n No answer but this:\n They said, \"Drive them out\n Of your city: these are\nIndeed men who want\n To be clean and pure!\"\n83. But we saved him\n And his family, except\n His wife: she was\n Of those who lagged behind\n84. And we rained down on them\n A shower (of brimstone):\n Then see what was the end\n Of those who indulged\n In sin and crime!\n85. To the Madyan people\nWe sent Shu\u2018aib, one\n Of their own brethren: he said:\n \"O my people! worship God;\n Ye have no other god\n But Him. Now hath come\n Unto you a clear (Sign)\n From your Lord! Give just\n Measure and weight, nor withhold\n From the people the things\n That are their due; and do\n No mischief on the earth\n After it has been set\n In order: that will be best\n For you, if ye have Faith.\n86. \"And squat not on every road,\n Breathing threats, hindering\n From the path of God\n Those who believe in Him,\n And seeking in it\n Something crooked;\n But remember how ye were\n Little, and He gave you increase.\n And hold in your mind's eye\n What was the end\nOf those who did mischief.\n87. \"And if there is a party\n Among you who believes\n In the Message with which\n I have been sent, and a party\n Which does not believe,\n Hold yourselves in patience\n Until God doth decide\n Between us: for He\n Is the best to decide.\"\n88. The leaders, the arrogant\n Party among his people, said:\n \"O Shu\u2019aib! we shall\n Certainly drive thee out\n Of our city\u2014(thee) and those\n Who believe with thee;\n Or else ye (thou and they)\n Shall have to return\n To our ways and religion.\"\n He said: \"What! even\n Though we do detest (them)?\n89. \"We should indeed invent\n A lie against God,\n If we returned to your ways\n After God hath rescued\n Us therefrom; nor could we\n By any manner of means\n Return thereto unless it be\n As in the will and plan of God,\n Our Lord. Our Lord\n Can reach out to the utmost\n Recesses of things by His\n knowledge.\n In God is our trust.\n Our Lord! Decide thou\n Between us and our people\nIn truth, for thou\n Art the best to decide.\"\n90. The leaders, the Unbelievers\n Among his people, said:\n \"If ye follow Shu\u2019aib,\n Be sure then ye are ruined!\"\n91. But the earthquake took them\n Unawares, and they lay\n Prostrate in their homes\n Before the morning!\"\n92. The men who rejected\n Shu\u2019aib became as if\n They had never been\n In the homes where they\n Had flourished: the men\n Who rejected Shu\u2019aib\u2014\n It was they who were ruined!\n93. So Shu\u2019aib left them,\n Saying: \"O my people!\n I did indeed convey to you\n The Messages for which\n I was sent by my Lord:\n I gave you good counsel,\n But how shall I lament\nOver a people who refuse\n To believe!\"\n94. Whenever We sent a prophet\n To a town, We took up\n Its people in suffering\n And adversity, in order\n That they might learn humility.\n95. Then We changed their suffering\n Into prosperity, until they grew\n And multiplied, and began\n To say: \"Our fathers (too)\n Were touched by suffering\n And affluence\"\u2026 Behold!\n We called them to account\n Of a sudden, while they\n Realised not (their peril).\n96. If the people of the towns\n Had but believed and feared\n God, We should indeed\n Have opened out to them\n(All kinds of) blessings\n From heaven and earth;\n But they rejected (the truth),\n And We brought them\n To book for their misdeeds.\n97. Did the people of the towns\n Feel secure against the coming\n Of Our wrath by night\n While they were asleep?\n98. Or else did they feel\n Secure against its coming\n In broad daylight while they\n Played about (care-free)?\n99. Did they then feel secure\n Against the Plan of God?\u2014\n But no one can feel\n Secure from the Plan\n Of God, except those\n (Doomed) to ruin!\n100. To those who inherit\n The earth in succession\n To its (previous) possessors,\n Is it not a guiding (lesson)\n That, if We so willed,\n We could punish them (too)\n For their sins, and seal up\n Their hearts so that they\n Could not hear?\n101. Such were the towns\n Whose story We (thus)\n Relate unto thee:\n There came indeed to them\n Their apostles with clear (Signs):\n But they would not believe\n What they had rejected before.\n Thus doth God seal up\n The hearts of those\n Who reject Faith.\n102. Most of them We found not\n Men (true) to their covenant:\n But most of them We found\n Rebellious and disobedient.\n103. Then after them We sent\n Moses with Our Signs\n To Pharaoh and his chiefs,\n But they wrongfully rejected them:\n So see what was the end\n Of those who made mischief.\n104. Moses said: \"O Pharaoh!\n I am an apostle from\n The Lord of the Worlds,\u2014\n105. One for whom it is right\n To say nothing but truth\n About God. Now have I\n Come unto you (people), from\n Your Lord, with a clear (Sign):\n So let the Children of Israel\n Depart along with me.\"\n106. (Pharaoh) said: \"If indeed\n Thou hast come with a Sign,\nShow it forth,\n If thou tellest the truth.\"\n107. Then (Moses) threw his rod,\n And behold! it was\n A serpent, plain (for all to see)!\n108. And he drew out his hand,\n And behold! it was white\n To all beholders!\n109. Said the Chiefs of the people\n Of Pharaoh: \"This is indeed\n A sorcerer well-versed.\n110. \"His plan is to get you out\n Of your land: then\n What is it ye counsel?\"\n111. They said: \"Keep him\n And his brother in suspense\n (For a while); and send\n To the cities men to collect\u2014\n112. And bring up to thee\n All (our) sorcerers well-versed.\n113. So there came\n The sorcerers to Pharaoh:\n They said, \"Of course\n We shall have a (suitable)\n Reward if we win!\"\n114. He said: \"Yea, (and more),\u2014\n For ye shall in that case\n Be (raised to posts)\n Nearest (to my person).\"\n115. They said: \"O Moses!\n Wilt thou throw (first),\n Or shall we have\n The (first) throw?\"\n116. Said Moses: \"Throw ye (first).\"\n So when they threw,\n They bewitched the eyes\n Of the people, and struck\n Terror into them: for they\n Showed a great (feat of) magic.\n117. We put it into Moses's mind\n By inspiration: \"Throw (now)\n Thy rod\": and behold!\n It swallows up straightway\n All the falsehoods\n Which they fake!\n118. Thus truth was confirmed.\n And all that they did\n Was made of no effect.\n119. So the (great ones) were vanquished\n There and then, and were\n Made to look small.\n120. But the sorcerers fell down\n Prostrate in adoration,\n121. Saying: \"We believe\n In the Lord of the Worlds,\u2014\n122. \"The Lord of Moses and Aaron.\n123. Said Pharaoh: \"Believe ye\n In Him before I give\n You permission? Surely\n This is a trick which ye\n Have planned in the City\n To drive out its people:\n But soon shall ye know\n (The consequences).\n124. \"Be sure I will cut off\n Your hands and your feet\n On opposite sides, and I\n Will cause you all\n To die on the cross.\"\n125. They said: \"For us,\n We are but sent back\n Unto our Lord:\n126. \"But thou dost wreak\n Thy vengeance on us\n Simply because we believed\n In the Signs of our Lord\n When they reached us!\n Our Lord! pour out on us\n Patience and constancy, and take\n Our souls unto Thee\n As Muslims (who bow\n To Thy Will)!\n127. Said the chiefs of Pharaoh's\n People: \"Wilt thou leave\n Moses and his people,\n To spread mischief in the land,\n And to abandon thee\n And thy gods?\" He said:\n \"Their male children will we\n Slay; (only) their females\n Will we save alive;\n And we have over them\n(Power) irresistible.\"\n128. Said Moses to his people:\n \"Pray for help from God,.\n And (wait) in patience and\n constancy:\n For the earth is God's,\n To give as a heritage\n To such of His servants\n As He pleaseth; and the end\n Is (best) for the righteous.\n129. They said: \"We have had\n (Nothing but) trouble, both before\n And after thou camest\n To us.\" He said:\n \"It may be that your Lord\n Will destroy your enemy\n And make you inheritors \n In the earth; that so\n He may try you\n By your deeds.\"\n130. We punished the people\n Of Pharaoh with years\n(Of drought) and shortness\n Of crops; that they might\n Receive admonition.\n131. But when good (times) came,\n They said, \"This is due\n To us;\" when gripped\n By calamity, they ascribed it\n To evil omens connected\n With Moses and those with him!\n Behold! in truth the omens\n Of evil are theirs\n In God's sight, but most\n Of them do not understand!\n132. They said (to Moses):\n \"Whatever be the Signs\n Thou bringest, to work\n Therewith thy sorcery on us,\"\n We shall never believe\n In thee.\"\n133. So We sent (plagues) on them:\n Wholesale Death,\n Locusts, Lice, Frogs,\n And Blood: Signs openly\n Self-explained: but they\n Were steeped in arrogance,\u2014\n A people given to sin.\n134. Every time the Penalty\n Fell on them, they said:\n\"O Moses! on our behalf\n Call on thy Lord in virtue\n Of his promise to thee:\n If thou wilt remove\n The Penalty from us,\n We shall truly believe in thee,\n And we shall send away\n The Children of Israel\n With thee.\"\n135. But every tune We removed\n The Penalty from them\n According to a fixed term\n Which they had to fulfil,\u2014\n Behold! they broke their word!\n136. So We exacted retribution\n From them: We drowned them\n In the sea, because they\n Rejected Our Signs, and failed\n To take warning from them.\n137. And We made a people,\n Considered weak (and of no account),\n Inheritors of lands\n In both East and West,\u2014\nLands whereon We sent\n Down Our blessings.\n The fair promise of thy Lord\n Was fulfilled for the Children\n Of Israel, because they had\n Patience and constancy,\n And We levelled to the ground\n The great Works and fine Buildings\n Which Pharaoh and his people\n Erected (with such pride).\n138. We took the Children of Israel\n (With safety) across the sea.\n They came upon a people\n Devoted entirely to some idols\n They had. They said:\n \"O Moses! fashion for us\n A god like unto the gods\n They have.\" He said:\n\"Surely ye are a people\n Without knowledge.\n139. \"As to these folk,\u2014\n The cult they are in\n Is (but) a fragment of a ruin,\n And vain is the (worship)\n Which they practise.\"\n140. He said: \"Shall I seek for you\n A god other than the (true)\n God, when it is God\n Who hath endowed you\n With gifts above the nations?\"\n141. And remember We rescued you\n From Pharaoh's people,\n Who afflicted you with\n The worst of penalties,\n Who slew your male children\n And saved alive your females:\n In that was a momentous\n Trial from your Lord.\n142. We appointed for Moses\n Thirty nights, and completed\n (The period) with ten (more):\n Thus was completed the term\n (Of communion) with his Lord,\n Forty nights. And Moses\n Had charged his brother Aaron\n (Before he went up):\n\"Act for me amongst my people:\n Do right, and follow not\n The way of those\n Who do mischief.\"\n143. When Moses came\n To the place appointed by Us,\n And his Lord addressed him,\n He said: \"O my Lord!\n Show (Thyself) to me,\n That I may look upon Thee.\"\n God said, \"By no means\n Canst thou see Me (direct);\n But look upon the mount;\n If it abide\n In its place, then\n Shalt thou see Me.\"\n When his Lord manifested\n His glory on the Mount,\n He made it as dust,\n And Moses fell down\n In a swoon. When he\n Recovered his senses he said:\n \"Glory be to Thee! To Thee\n I turn in repentance, and I\n Am the first to believe.\"\n144. (God) said: \"O Moses!\n I have chosen thee\n Above (other) men,\n By the mission I (have\n Given thee) and the words\n I (have spoken to thee):\n Take then the (revelation)\n Which I give thee,\n And be of those\n Who give thanks.\"\n145. And We ordained laws\n For him in the Tablets\n In all matters, both\n Commanding and explaining\n All things, (and said):\n \"Take and hold these\n With firmness, and enjoin\n Thy people to hold fast\n By the best in the precepts:\n Soon shall I show you\n The homes of the wicked,\u2014\n (How they lie desolate).\"\n146. Those who behave arrogantly\n On the earth in defiance\nOf right\u2014them will I\n Turn away from My Signs:\n Even if they see all the Signs,\n They will not believe in them;\n And if they see the way\n Of right conduct, they will\n Not adopt it as the Way;\n But if they see the way\n Of error, that is\n The Way they will adopt.\n For they have rejected\n Our Signs, and failed\n To take warning from them.\n147. Those who reject Our Signs\n And the Meeting in the Hereafter,\u2014\n Vain are their deeds:\n Can they expect to be rewarded\n Except as they have wrought?\n148. The people of Moses made,\n In his absence, out of their ornaments,\nThe image of a calf,\n (for worship):\n It seemed to low: did they\n Not see that it could\n Neither speak to them, nor\n Show them the Way?\n They took it for worship\n And they did wrong.\n149. When they repented, and saw\n That they had erred,\n They said: \"if our Lord\n Have not mercy upon us\n And forgive us, we shall\n Indeed be of those who perish.\"\n150. When Moses came back\n To his people, angry and grieved,\n He said: \"Evil it is that ye\n Have done in my place\n In my absence: did ye\n Make haste to bring on\n The judgment of your Lord?\"\n He put down the Tablets,\nSeized his brother by (the hair\n Of) his head, and dragged him\n To him. Aaron said:\n \"Son of my mother! The people\n Did indeed reckon me\n As naught, and went near\n To slaying me! Make not\n The enemies rejoice over\n My misfortune, nor count thou\n Me amongst the people\n Of sin.\"\n151. Moses prayed: \"O my Lord!\n Forgive me and my brother!\n Admit us to Thy mercy!\n For Thou art the Most Merciful\n Of those who show mercy!\"\n152. Those who took the calf\n (For worship) will indeed\n Be overwhelmed with wrath\n From their Lord, and with\n Shame in this life:\n Thus do We recompense\n Those who invent (falsehoods).\n153. But those who do wrong\n But repent thereafter and\n (Truly) believe,\u2014verily\n Thy Lord is thereafter\n Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.\n154. When the anger of Moses\n Was appeased, he took up\n The Tablets: in the writing\n Thereon was Guidance and Mercy\n For such as fear their Lord.\n155. And Moses chose seventy\n Of his people for Our place\n Of meeting: when they\n Were seized with violent quaking,\n He prayed: \"O my Lord!\n If it had been Thy Will\n Thou couldst have destroyed,\n Long before, both them\n And me: wouldst Thou\n Destroy us for the deeds\n Of the foolish ones among us?\n This is no more than\n Thy trial: by it Thou causest\n Whom Thou wilt to stray,\n And Thou leadest whom\n Thou wilt into the right path.\n Thou art our Protector:\n So forgive us and give us\n Thy mercy; for Thou art\n The Best of those who forgive.\n156. \"And ordain for us\n That which is good,\n In this life\n And in the Hereafter:\n For we have turned unto Thee.\"\n He said: \"With My Punishment\nI visit whom I will;\n But My Mercy extendeth\n To all things. That (Mercy)\n I shall ordain for those\n Who do right, and practise\n Regular charity, and those\n Who believe in Our Signs;\u2014\n157. \"Those who follow the Apostle,\n The unlettered Prophet,\n Whom they find mentioned\n In their own (Scriptures),\u2014\n In the Law and the Gospel;\u2014\n For he commands them\n What is just and forbids them\n What is evil; he allows\n Them as lawful what is good\n (And pure) and prohibits them\n From what is bad (and impure);\n He releases them\n From their heavy burdens\n And from the yokes\n That are upon them.\n So it is those who believe\n In him, honour him,\n Help him, and follow the Light\n Which is sent down with him,\u2014\nIt is they who will prosper.\"\n158. Say: \"O men! I am sent\n Unto you all, as the Apostle\n Of God, to Whom belongeth\n The dominion of the heavens\n And the earth: there is no god\n But He: it is He that giveth\n Both life and death. So believe\n In God and His Apostle,\n The unlettered Prophet,\n Who believeth in God\n And His Words: follow him\n That (so) ye may be guided.\"\n159. Of the people of Moses\n There is a section\n Who guide and do justice\n In the light of truth.\n160. We divided them into twelve Tribes\n Or nations. We directed\n Moses by inspiration,\n When his (thirsty) people asked\n Him for water: \"Strike the rock\n With thy staff\": out of it\n There gushed forth twelve springs:\n Each group knew its own place\n For water. We gave them\n The shade of clouds, and sent\n Down to them manna and quails,\n (Saying): \"Eat of the good things\n We have provided for you\":\n (But they rebelled); to Us\n They did no harm, but\n They harmed their own souls.\n161. And remember it was\n Said to them:\n \"Dwell in this town\n And eat therein as ye wish,\n But say the word of humility\n And enter the gate\n In a posture of humility:\n We shall forgive you\n Your faults; We shall increase\n (The portion of) those who do good.\"\n162. But the transgressors among them\n Changed the word from that\n Which had been given them\n So we sent on them\n A plague from heaven.\n For that they repeatedly transgressed.\n163. Ask them concerning the town\n Standing close by the sea.\n Behold! they transgressed\nIn the matter of the Sabbath.\n For on the day of their Sabbath\n Their fish did come to them,\n Openly holding up their heads,\n But on the day they had\n No Sabbath, they came not:\n Thus did We make a trial\n Of them, for they were\n Given to transgression.\n164. When some of them said:\n \"Why do ye preach\n To a people whom God\n Will destroy or visit\n With a terrible punishment?\"\u2014\n Said the preachers: \"To discharge\n Our duty to your Lord,\n And perchance they may fear Him.\"\n165. When they disregarded the warnings\n That had been given them,\n We rescued those who forbade\n Evil; but We visited\n The wrong-doers with a\n Grievous punishment, because\n They were given to transgression.\n166. When in their insolence\n They transgressed (all) prohibitions,\n We said to them:\n \"Be ye apes,\n Despised and rejected.\"\n167. Behold! thy Lord did declare\n That He would send\n Against them, to the Day\n Of Judgment, those who would\n Afflict them with grievous\n Penalty. Thy Lord is quick\n In retribution, but He is also\n Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.\n168. We broke them up\n Into sections on this earth.\n There are among them some\n That are the righteous, and some\n That are the opposite.\n We have tried them\n With both prosperity and adversity:\n In order that they\n Might turn (to Us).\n169. After them succeeded\n An (evil) generation: they\n Inherited the Book, but\n They chose (for themselves)\n The vanities of this world,\n Saying (for excuse): \"(Everything)\n Will be forgiven us.\"\n (Even so), if similar vanities\n Came their way, they would\n (Again) seize them.\n Was not the Covenant\n Of the Book taken from them,\n That they would not\n Ascribe to God anything\nBut the truth? And they\n Study what is in the Book.\n But best for the righteous\n Is the Home in the Hereafter.\n Will ye not understand?\n170. As to those who hold fast\n By the Book and establish\n Regular Prayer,\u2014never\n Shall we suffer the reward\n Of the righteous to perish.\n171. When We shook the Mount\n Over them, as if it had been\n A canopy, and they thought\n It was going to fall on them\n (We said): \"Hold firmly\n To what We have given you,\n And bring (ever) to remembrance\n What is therein;\n Perchance ye may fear God.\"\n172. When thy Lord drew forth\n From the Children of Adam\u2014\nFrom their loins\u2014\n Their descendants, and made them\n Testify concerning themselves, (saying):\n \"Am I not your Lord\n (Who cherishes and sustains you)?\"\u2014\n They said: \"Yea!\n We do testify!\" (This), lest\n Ye should say on the Day\n Of Judgment: \"Of this we\n Were never mindful\":\n173. Or lest ye should say:\n \"Our fathers before us\n May have taken false gods,\n But we are (their) descendants\n After them: wilt Thou then\n Destroy us because of the deeds\n Of men who were futile?\"\n174. Thus do We explain\n The Signs in detail;\n And perchance they may turn\n (Unto Us).\n175. Relate to them the story\n Of the man to whom\n We sent Our Signs,\n But he passed them by:\nSo Satan followed him up,\n And he went astray.\n176. If it had been Our Will,\n We should have elevated him\n With Our Signs; but he\n Inclined to the earth,\n And followed his own vain desires.\n His similitude is that\n Of a dog: if you attack\n Him, he lolls out his tongue,\n Or if you leave him alone,\n He (still) lolls out his tongue.\n That is the similitude\n Of those who reject Our Signs;\n So relate the story;\n Perchance they may reflect.\n177. Evil as an example are\n People who reject Our Signs\n And wrong their own souls.\n178. Whom God doth guide,\n He is on the right path:\n Whom He rejects from His guidance,\u2014\n Such are the persons who perish.\n179. Many are the Jinns and men\n We have made for Hell:\n They have hearts wherewith they\n Understand not, eyes wherewith\nThey see not, and ears wherewith\n They hear not. They are\n Like cattle,\u2014nay more\n Misguided: for they\n Are heedless (of warning).\n180. The most beautiful names\n Belong to God:\n So call on him by them;\n But shun such men as\n Use profanity in His names:\n For what they do, they will\n Soon be requited.\n181. Of those We have created\n Are people who direct\n (Others) with truth.\n And dispense justice therewith,\n182. Those who reject Our Signs,\n We shall gradually visit\n With punishment, in ways\n They perceive not;\n183. Respite will I grant\n Unto them: for My scheme\n Is strong (and unfailing).\n184. Do they not reflect?\n Their Companion is not seized\nWith madness: he is but\n A perspicuous warner.\n185. Do they see nothing\n In the government of the heavens\n And the earth and all\n That God hath created?\n (Do they not see) that\n It may well be that\n Their term is nigh\n Drawing to an end?\n In what Message after this\n Will they then believe?\n186. To such as God rejects\n From His guidance, there can be\n No guide: He will\n Leave them in their trespasses,\n Wandering in distraction.\n187. Whey ask thee about\n The (final) Hour\u2014when\n Will be its appointed time?\n Say: \"The knowledge thereof\n Is with my Lord (alone):\n None but He can reveal\n As to when it will occur.\n Heavy were its burden through\n The heavens and the earth.\n Only, all of a sudden\n Will it come to you.\"\n They ask thee as if thou\nWert eager in search thereof:\n Say: \"The knowledge thereof\n Is with God (alone),\n But most men know not.\"\n188. Say: \"I have no power\n Over any good or harm\n To myself except as God\n Willeth. If I had knowledge\n Of the unseen, I should have\n Multiplied all good, and no evil\n Should have touched me:\n I am but a warner,\n And a bringer of glad tidings\n To those who have faith.\"\n189. It is He Who created\n You from a single person,\n And made his mate\n Of like nature, in order\n That he might dwell with her\n (In love). When they are\n United, she bears a light\n Burden and carries it about\n (Unnoticed). When she grows\n Heavy, they both pray\n To God their Lord, (saying):\n \"If Thou givest us\n A goodly child,\nWe vow we shall\n (Ever) be grateful.\"\n190. But when He giveth them\n A goodly child, they ascribe\n To others a share in the gift\n They have received:\n But God is exalted\n High above the partners\n They ascribe to Him.\n191. Do they indeed ascribe\n To Him as partners things\n That can create nothing,\n But are themselves created?\n192. No aid can they give them,\n Nor can they aid themselves!\n193. If ye call them to guidance,\n They will not obey:\n For you it is the same\n Whether ye call them\n Or ye hold your peace!\n194. Verily those whom ye\n Call upon besides God\n Are servants like unto you:\n Call upon them, and let them\n Listen to your prayer,\n If ye are (indeed) truthful!\n195. Have they feet to walk with?\n Or hands to lay hold with?\nOr eyes to see with?\n Or ears to hear with?\n Say: \"Call your 'god-partners',\n Scheme (your worst) against me,\n And give me no respite!\n196. \"For my Protector is God,\n Who revealed the Book\n (From time to time),\n And He will choose\n And befriend the righteous.\n197. \"But those ye call upon\n Besides Him, are unable\n To help you, and indeed\n To help themselves.\"\n198. If thou callest them\n To guidance, they hear not.\n Thou wilt see them\n Looking at thee, but\n They see not.\n199. Hold to forgiveness;\n Command what is right;\n But turn away from the ignorant.\n200. If a suggestion from Satan\n Assail thy (mind)\nSeek refuge with God;\n For He heareth and knoweth\n (All things).\n201. Those who fear God,\n When a thought of evil\n From Satan assaults them,\n Bring God to remembrance,\n When lo! they see (aright)!\n202. But their brethren (the evil ones)\n Plunge them deeper into error,\n And never relax (their efforts).\n203. If thou bring them not\n A revelation, they say:\n \"Why hast thou not\n Got it together?\"\n Say: \"I but follow\n What is revealed to me\n From my Lord:\n This is (nothing but)\n Lights from your Lord,\n And Guidance, and Mercy,\n For any who have Faith.\"\n204. When the Qur-\u0101n is read,\n Listen to it with attention,\nAnd hold your peace:\n That ye may receive Mercy.\n205. And do thou (O reader!)\n Bring thy Lord to remembrance\n In thy (very) soul,\n With humility and in reverence,\n Without loudness in words,\n In the mornings and evenings;\n And be not thou\n Of those who are unheedful.\n206.
