A. L. R.\n These are the \u0100yats\n Of the Book of Wisdom.\n2. Is it a matter\n Of wonderment to men\n That We have sent\n Our inspiration to a man\n From among themselves?\u2014\n That he should warn mankind\n (Of their danger), and give\n The good news to the Believers\n That they have before their Lord\n The lofty rank of Truth.\n (But) say the Unbelievers:\n \"This is indeed\n An evident sorcerer!\"\n3. Verily your Lord is God,\n Who created the heavens\n And the earth in six Days,\nAnd is firmly established\n On the Throne (of authority),\n Regulating and governing all things.\n No intercessor (can plead with Him)\n Except after His leave\n (Hath been obtained). This\n Is God your Lord; Him therefore\n Serve ye: will ye not\n Receive admonition?\n4. To Him will be your return\u2014\n Of all of you. The promise\n Of God is true and sure.\n It is He who beginneth\n The process of creation,\n And repeateth it, that He\n May reward with justice\n Those who believe\n And work righteousness;\n But those who reject Him\n Will have draughts\n Of boiling fluids,\n And a Penalty grievous,\n Because they did reject Him.\n5. It is He who made the sun\n To be a shining glory\nAnd the moon to be a light\n (Of beauty), and measured out\n Stages for her; that ye might\n Know the number of years\n And the count (of time).\n Nowise did God create this\n But in truth and righteousness.\n (Thus) doth He explain His Signs\n In detail, for those who understand.\n6. Verily, in the alternation\n Of the Night and the Day,\n And in all that God\n Hath created, in the heavens\n And the earth, are Signs\n For those who fear Him.\n7. Those who rest not their hope\n On their meeting with Us,\n But are pleased and satisfied\n With the life of the Present,\n And those who heed not\n Our Signs,\u2014\n8. Their abode is the Fire,\n Because of the (evil)\n They earned.\n9. Those who believe,\n And work righteousness,\u2014\n Their Lord will guide them\n Because of their Faith:\nBeneath them will flow\n Rivers in Gardens of Bliss.\n10. (This will be) their cry therein:\n \"Glory to Thee, O God!\"\n And \"Peace\" will be their greeting therein!\n And the close of their cry\n Will be: \"Praise be to God,\n The Cherisher and Sustainer.\n Of the Worlds!\"\n11. If God were to hasten for men\n The ill (they have earned)\n As they would fain hasten on\n The good,\u2014then would\n Their respite be settled at once.\n But We leave those\n Who rest not their hope\n On their meeting with Us,\n In their trespasses, wandering\n In distraction to and fro.\n12. When trouble toucheth a man,\n He crieth unto Us\n (In all postures)\u2014lying down \n On his side, or sitting,\n Or standing. But when We\n Have solved his trouble,\n He passeth on his way as if\n He had never cried to Us\n For a trouble that touched him!\n Thus do the deeds of transgressors\n Seem fair in their eyes!\n13. Generations before you\n We destroyed when they\n Did wrong: their Apostles\n Came to them with Clear Signs,\n But they would not believe!\n Thus do We requite\n Those who sin!\n14. Then We made you heirs\n In the land after them,\n To see how ye would behave!\n15. But when Our Clear Signs\n Are rehearsed unto them,\n Those who rest not their hope\n On their meeting with Us,\n Say: \"Bring us a Reading\n Other than this, or change this,\"\n Say: \"It is not for me,\n Of my own accord,\n To change it: I follow\n Naught but what is revealed\n Unto me: if I were\n To disobey my Lord,\n I should myself fear the Penalty\n Of a Great Day (to come).\"\n16. Say: \"If God had so willed,\n I should not have rehearsed it\n To you, nor whould He\n Have made it known to you.\n A whole life-time before this\n Have I tarried amongst you:\n Will ye not then understand?\n17. Who doth more wrong\n Than such as forge a lie\n Against God, or deny\n His Signs? But never\n Will prosper those who sin.\n18. They serve, besides God,\n Things that hurt them not\n Nor profit them, and they say:\n \"These are our intercessors\n With God.\" Say: \"Do ye\n Indeed inform God of something\n He knows not, in the heavens\n Or on earth?\u2014Glory to Him!\n And far is He above the partners\n They ascribe (to Him)!\"\n19. Mankind was but one nation,\n But differed (later). Had it not\n Been for a Word\n That went forth before\n From thy Lord, their differences\n Would have been settled\n Between them.\n20. They say: \"Why is not\n A Sign sent down to him\n From his Lord?\" Say:\n \"The Unseen is only\n For God (to know).\n Then wait ye: I too\nWill wait with you.\n21. When We make mankind\n Taste of some mercy after\n Adversity hath touched them,\n Behold! they take to plotting\n Against Our Signs! Say:\n \"Swifter to plan is God!\"\n Verily, Our messengers record\n All the plots that ye make!\n22. He it is who enableth you\n To traverse through land\n And sea; so that ye even board\n Ships;\u2014they sail with them\n With a favourable wind,\n And they rejoice thereat;\n Then comes a stormy wind\n And the waves come to them\n From all sides, and they think\n They are being overwhelmed:\n They cry unto God, sincerely\n Offering (their) duty unto Him,\n Saying, \"If Thou dost deliver us\n From this, we shall truly\nShow our gratitude!\"\n23. But when he delivereth them,\n Behold! they transgress\n Insolently through the earth\n In defiance of right!\n O mankind! your insolence\n Is against your own souls,\u2014\n An enjoyment of the life\n Of the Present: in the end,\n To Us is your return,\n And We shall show you\n The truth of all that ye did.\n24. The likeness of the life\n Of the Present is\n As the rain which We\n Send down from the skies:\n By its mingling arises\n The produce of the earth\u2014\n Which provides food\n For men and animals:\n (It grows) till the earth\n Is clad with its golden\n Ornaments and is decked out\n (In beauty): the people to whom\n It belongs think they have\n All powers of disposal over it:\n There reaches it Our command\n By night or by day,\n And We make it\n Like a harvest clean-mown,\n As if it had not flourished\nOnly the day before!\n Thus do We explain\n The Signs in detail\n For those who reflect.\n25. But God doth call\n To the Home of Peace:\n He doth guide whom He pleaseth\n To a Way that is straight.\n26. To those who do right\n Is a goodly (reward)\u2014\n Yea, more (than in measure)!\n No darkness nor shame\n Shall cover their faces!\n They are Companions of the Garden;\n They will abide therein\n (For aye)!\n27. But those who have earned\n Evil will have a reward\n Of like evil: ignominy\n Will cover their (faces):\n No defender will they have\n From (the wrath of) God:\n Their faces will be covered,\n As it were, with pieces\n From the depth of the darkness\n Of Night: they are Companions\nOf the Fire: they will\n Abide therein (for aye)!\n28. One Day shall We gather them\n All together. Then shall We say\n To those who joined gods (with Us):\n \"To your place! ye and those\n Ye joined as \"partners\".\"\n We shall separate them,\n And their \"partners\" shall say:\n \"It was not us\n That ye worshipped!\n29. \"Enough is God for a witness\n Between us and you: we\n Certainly knew nothing\n Of your worship of us!\"\n30. There will every soul prove\n (The fruits of) the deeds\n It sent before : they will\n Be brought back to God\n Their rightful Lord,\n And their invented falsehoods\n Will leave them in the lurch.\n31. Say: \"Who is it that\n Sustains you (in life)\n From the sky and from the earth?\nOr who is it that\n Has power over hearing\n And sight? And who\n Is it that brings out\n The living from the dead\n And the dead from the living?\n And who is it that\n Rules and regulates all affairs?\"\n They will soon say, \"God\".\n Say, \"Will ye not then\n Show piety (to Him)?\"\n32. Such is God, your real\n Cherisher and Sustainer:\n Apart from Truth,\n What (remains) but error?\n How then are ye turned away?\n33. Thus is the Word\n Of thy Lord proved true\n Against those who rebel:\n Verily they will not believe.\n34. Say: \"Of your 'partners',\n Can any originate creation\n And repeat it?\" Say:\n \"It is God Who originates\n Creation and repeats it: \n Then how are ye deluded\n Away (from the truth)?\"\n35. Say: \"Of your \"partners\"\n Is there any that\n Can give any guidance\n Towards Truth?\" Say: \"It is God\n Who gives guidance\n Towards Truth. Is then He\n Who gives guidance to Truth\n More worthy to be followed,\n Or he who finds not guidance\n (Himself) unless he is guided?\n What then is the matter\n With you? How judge ye?\"\n36. But most of them follow\n Nothing but fancy: truly\n Fancy can be of no avail\n Against Truth. Verily God\n Is well aware of all\n That they do.\n37. This Qur-\u0101n is not such\n As can be produced\n By other than God;\n On the contrary it is\n A confirmation of (revelations)\n That went before it,\n And a fuller explanation\n Of the Book\u2014wherein\n There is no doubt\n From the Lord of the Worlds.\n38. Or do they say,\n \"He forged it\"?\n Say: \"Bring then\n A S\u016bra like unto it,\n And call (to your aid)\n Anyone you can,\n Besides God, if it be\n Ye speak the truth!\"\n39. Nay, they charge with falsehood\n That whose knowledge they\n Cannot compass, even before\n The elucidation thereof\"\n Hath reached them: thus\n Did those before them\n Make charges of falsehood:\n But see what was the end\n Of those who did wrong!\n40. Of them there are some\n Who believe therein,\n And some who do not:\n And thy Lord knoweth best\n Those who are out for mischief.\n41. If they charge thee\n With falsehood, say:\n \"My work to me,\n And yours to you!\nYe are free from responsibility\n For what I do, and I\n For what ye do!\"\n42. Among them are some who\n (Pretend to) listen to thee:\n But canst thou make the deaf\n To hear,\u2014even though\n They are without understanding?\n43. And among them are some\n Who look at thee:\n But canst thou guide\n The blind,\u2014even though\n They will not see?\n44. Verily God will not deal\n Unjustly with man in aught:\n It is man that wrongs\n His own soul.\n45. One day He will\n Gather them together:\n (It will be) as if\n They had tarried\n But an hour of a day:\n They will recognise each other:\n Assuredly those will be lost\n Who denied the meeting\n With God and refused\n To receive true guidance.\n46. Whether We show thee\n (Realised in thy life-time)\n Some part of what We\n Promise them,\u2014or We\nTake thy soul (to Our Mercy)\n (Before that),\u2014in any case,\n To Us is their return:\n Ultimately God is witness.\n To all that they do.\n47. To every people (was sent)\n An Apostle: when their Apostle\n Comes (before them), the matter\n Will be judged between them\n With justice, and they\n Will not be wronged.\n48. They say: \"When\n Will this promise\n Come to pass,\n If ye speak the truth?\"\n49. Say: \"I have no power\n Over any harm or profit\n To myself except as God\n Willeth. To every People\n Is a term appointed:\n When their term is reached,\n Not an hour can they cause\n Delay, nor (an hour) can they\n Advance (it in anticipation).\"\n50. Say: \"Do ye see,\n If His punishment should come\n To you by night or by day,\u2014\n What portion of it\n Would the Sinners\n Wish to hasten?\n51. \"Would ye then believe in it\n At last, when it actually cometh\n To pass? (It will then be said:)\n 'Ah! now? and ye wanted\n (Aforetime) to hasten it on!'\n52. \"At length will be said\n To the wrong-doers: 'Taste ye\n The enduring punishment!\n Ye get but the recompense\n Of what ye earned!'\"\n53. They seek to be informed\n By thee: \"Is that true?\"\n Say: \"Aye! by my Lord!\n It is the very truth!\n And ye cannot frustrate it!\"\n54. Every soul that hath sinned,\n If it possessed all\n That is on earth,\n Would fain give it in ransom:\nThey would declare (their) repentance\n When they see the Penalty:\n But the judgment between them\n Will be with justice,\n And no wrong will be done\n Unto them.\n55. Is it not (the case) that to God\n Belongeth whatever is\n In the heavens and on earth?\n Is it not (the case) that\n God's promise is assuredly true?\n Yet most of them understand not.\n56. It is He who giveth life\n And who taketh it,\n And to Him shall ye\n All be brought back.\n57. O mankind! there hath come\n To you a direction from your Lord\n And a healing for the (diseases)\n In your hearts,\u2014and for those\n Who believe, a Guidance\n And a Mercy.\n58. Say: \"In the Bounty of God.\n And in His Mercy,\u2014in that\n Let them rejoice\": that is better\n Than the (wealth) they hoard.\n59. Say: \"See ye what things\n God hath sent down to you\nFor sustenance? Yet ye\n Hold forbidden some things\n Thereof and (some things) lawful.\"\n Say: \"Hath God indeed\n Permitted you, or do ye invent\n (Things) to attribute to God?\"\n60. And what think those\n Who invent lies against God,\n Of the Day of Judgment?\n Verily God is full of Bounty\n To mankind, but most\n Of them are ungrateful!\"\n61. In whatever business thou\n Mayest be, and whatever portion\n Thou mayest be reciting\n From the Qur-\u0101n,\u2014and whatever\n Deed ye (mankind) may be doing,\u2014\n We are Witnesses thereof\n When ye are deeply engrossed\n Therein. Nor is hidden\n From thy Lord (so much as)\n The weight of an atom\n On the earth or in heaven.\n And not the least\n And not the greatest\n Of these things but are recorded\n In a clear Record.\n62. Behold! verily on the friends\n Of God there is no fear,\nNor shall they grieve;\n63. Those who believe\n And (constantly) guard\n Against evil;\u2014\n64. For them are Glad Tidings,\n In the life of the Present\n And in the Hereafter:\n No change can there be\n In the Words of God.\n This is indeed\n The supreme Felicity.\n65. Let not their speech\n Grieve thee: for all power\n And honour belong to God:\n It is He Who heareth\n And knoweth (all things).\n66. Behold! verily to God\n Belong all creatures,\n In the heavens and on earth.\n What do they follow\n Who worship as His \"partners\"\n Other than God? They follow\n Nothing but fancy, and\n They do nothing but lie.\n67. He it is that hath\n Made you the Night\n That ye may rest therein,\n And the Day to make\n Things visible (to you).\n Verily in this are Signs\n For those who listen\n (To His Message).\n68. They say, \"God hath begotten\n A son!\"\u2014Glory be to Him!\n He is Self-Sufficient! His\n Are all things in the heavens\n And on earth! No warrant\n Have ye for this! Say ye\n About God what ye know not?\n69. Say: \"Those who invent\n A lie against God\n Will never prosper.\"\n70. A little enjoyment\n In this world!\u2014\n And then, to Us\n Will be their return.\n Then shall We make them\n Taste the severest Penalty\n For their blasphemies.\n71. Relate to them the story\n Of Noah. Behold! he said\n To his People: \"O my People,\n If it be hard on your (mind)\nThat I should stay (with you)\n And commemorate the Signs\n Of God,\u2014yet I put\n My trust in God.\n Get ye then an agreement\n About your plan and among\n Your Partners, so your plan\n Be not to you dark and dubious.\n Then pass your sentence on me,\n And give me no respite.\n72. \"But if ye turn back, (consider):\n No reward have I asked\n Of you: my reward is only\n Due from God, and I\n Have been commanded to be\n Of those who submit\n To God's Will (in Islam).\"\n73. They rejected him,\n But We delivered him,\n And those with him,\n In the Ark, and We made\n Them inherit (the earth),\n While We overwhelmed\n In the Flood those\n Who rejected Our Signs.\n Then see what was the end\n Of those who were warned\n (But heeded not)!\n74. Then after him We sent\n (Many) apostles to their Peoples:\n They brought them Clear Signs,\n But they would not believe\n What they had already rejected\nBeforehand. Thus do We seal\n The hearts of the transgressors.\n75. Then after them sent We\n Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh\n And his chiefs with Our Signs.\n But they were arrogant:\n They were a people in sin.\n76. When the Truth did come\n To them from Us, they said:\n \"This is indeed evident sorcery!\"\n77. Said Moses: \"Say ye (this)\n About the Truth when\n It hath (actually) reached you?\n Is sorcery (like) this?\n But sorcerers will not prosper.\"\n78. They said: \"Hast thou\n Come to us to turn us\n Away from the ways\n We found our fathers following,\u2014\n In order that thou and thy brother\n May have greatness in the land?\n But not we shall believe in you!\"\n79. Said Pharaoh: \"Bring me\n Every sorcerer well versed.\"\n80. When the sorcerers came,\n Moses said to them:\n \"Throw ye what ye (wish)\n To throw!\"\n81. When they had had their throw,\n Moses said: \"What ye\n Have brought is sorcery:\n God will surely make it\n Of no effect: for God\n Prospereth not the work\n Of those who make mischief.\n82. \"And God by His Words\n Doth prove and establish\n His Truth, however much\n The Sinners may hate it!\"\n83. But none believed in Moses\n Except some children of his People,\n Because of the fear of Pharaoh\n And his chiefs, lest they\n Should persecute them; and certainly\n Pharaoh was mighty on the earth\n And one who transgressed all bounds.\n84. Moses said: \"O my People!\n If ye do (really) believe\n In God, then in Him\n Put your trust if ye\n Submit (your will to His).\"\n85. They said: \"In God\n Do we put our trust.\nOur Lord! make us not\n A trial for those\n Who practise oppression;\n86.\"And deliver us by Thy Mercy\n From those who reject (Thee).\"\n87. We inspired Moses and his brother\n With this Message: \"Provide\n Dwellings for your People\n In Egypt, make your dwellings\n Into places of worship,\n And establish regular prayers:\n And give Glad Tidings\n To those who believe!\"\n88. Moses prayed: \"Our Lord!\n Thou hast indeed bestowed\n On Pharaoh and his Chiefs\n Splendour and wealth in the life\n Of the Present, and so,\n Our Lord, they mislead (men)\n From Thy Path. Deface.\n Our Lord, the features of their wealth,\n And send hardness to their hearts,\n So they will not believe\nUntil they see\n The grievous Penalty.\"\n89. God said: \"Accepted is\n Your prayer (O Moses and Aaron)\n So stand ye straight,\n And follow not the path\n Of those who know not.\n90. We took the Children\n Of Israel across the sea:\n Pharaoh and his hosts followed them\n In insolence and spite.\n At length, when overwhelmed\n With the flood, he said:\n \"I believe that there is no god\n Except Him Whom the Children\n Of Israel believe in:\n I am of those who submit\n (To God in Isl\u0101m).\"\n91. (It was said to him:)\n \"Ah now!\u2014But a little while\n Before, wast thou in rebellion!\u2014\n And thou didst mischief (and violence)!\n92. \"This day shall We save thee\n In thy body, that thou\n Mayest be a Sign to those\n Who come after thee!\n But verily, many among mankind\n Are heedless of Our Signs!\"\n93. We settled the Children\n Of Israel in a beautiful\n Dwelling-place, and provided\n For them sustenance of the best:\n It was after knowledge had been\n Granted to them, that they\n Fell into schisms. Verily\n God will judge between them\n As to the schisms amongst them,\n On the Day of Judgment.\n94. If thou wert in doubt\n As to what We have revealed\n Unto thee, then ask those\n Who have been reading\n The Book from before thee:\n The Truth hath indeed come\n To thee from thy Lord:\n So be in no wise\n Of those in doubt.\n95. Nor be of those who reject\n The Signs of God,\n Or thou shalt be of those\n Who perish.\n96. Whose against whom the Word\n Of thy Lord hath been verified\nWould not believe\u2014\n97. Even if every Sign was brought\n Unto them,\u2014until they see\n (For themselves) the Penalty Grievous.\n98. Why was there not\n A single township (among those\n We warned), which believed,\u2014\n So its Faith should have\n Profited it,\u2014except the People\n Of Jonah? When they believed,\n We removed from them\n The Penalty of Ignominy\n In the life of the Present,\n And permitted them to enjoy\n (Their life) for a while.\n99. If it had been thy Lord's Will,\n They would all have believed,\u2014\n All who are on earth!\n Wilt thou then compel mankind,\nAgainst their will, to believe!\n100. No soul can believe, except\n By the Will of God,\n And He will place Doubt\n (Or obscurity) on those\n Who will not understand.\n101. Say: \"Behold all that is\n In the heavens and on earth \";\n But neither Signs nor Warners\n Profit those who believe not.\n102. Do they then expect\n (Any thing) but (what happened\n In) the days of the men\n Who passed away before them?\n Say: \"Wait ye then:\n For I, too, will wait with you.\"\n103. In the end We deliver\n Our apostles and those who believe:\n Thus is it fitting on Our part\n That We should deliver\n Those who believe!\n104. Say: \"O ye men!\n If ye are in doubt\n As to my religion, (behold!)\n I worship not what ye\n Worship, other than God!\n But I worship God\n Who will take your souls\n (At death): I am commanded\n To be (in the ranks)\n Of the Believers,\n105. \"And further (thus), \"set thy face\n Towards Religion with true piety,\n And never in any wise\n Be of the Unbelievers;\n106. \"Nor call on any,\n Other than God;\u2014\n Such will neither profit thee\n Nor hurt thee: if thou dost,\n Behold! thou shalt certainly\n Be of those who do wrong.\"\n107. If God do touch thee\n With hurt, there is none\n Can remove it but He:\n If He do design some benefit\nFor thee, there is none\n Can keep back His favour:\n He causeth it to reach\n Whomsoever of His servants\n He pleaseth. And He is\n The Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.\n108. Say: \"O ye men! Now\n Truth hath reached you\n From your Lord! Those who receive\n Guidance, do so for the good\n Of their own souls; those\n Who stray, do so to their own loss:\n And I am not (set) over you\n To arrange your affairs.\"\n109. Follow thou the inspiration\n Sent unto thee, and be\n Patient and constant, till God\n Do decide: for He\n Is the Best to decide.","title":"The Holy Quran: S\u016bra X.
