Glory to (God)\n Who did take His Servant\n For a Journey by night\n From the Sacred Mosque\n To the Farthest Mosque,\n Whose precincts We did\n Bless,\u2014in order that We\n Might show him some\n Of Our Signs: for He\n Is the One Who heareth\n And seeth (all things).\n2. We gave Moses the Book,\n And made it a Guide\nTo the Children of Israel,\n (Commanding): \"Take not\n Other than Me\n As Disposer of (your) affairs.\"\n3. O ye that are sprung\n From those whom We carried\n (In the Ark) with Noah!\n Verily he was a devotee\n Most grateful.\n4. And We gave (clear) warning\n To the Children of Israel\n In the Book, that twice\n Would they do mischief\n On the earth and be elated\n With mighty arrogance\n (And twice would they be punished)!\n5. When the first of the warnings\n Came to pass, We sent\n Against you Our servants\n Given to terrible warfare:\n They entered the very inmost\n Parts of your homes;\n And it was a warning\n (Completely) fulfilled.\n6. Then did We grant you\n The Return as against them:\n We gave you increase\n In resources and sons,\n And made you\n The more numerous\n In man-power.\n7. If ye did well,\n Ye did well for yourselves;\n If ye did evil,\n (Ye did it) against yourselves?\n So when the second\n Of the warnings came to pass,\n (We permitted your enemies)\n To disfigure your faces,\n And to enter your Temple\n As they had entered it before,\n And to visit with destruction\n All that fell into their power.\n8. It may be that your Lord\n May (yet) show Mercy\nUnto you; but if ye\n Revert (to your sins),\n We shall revert\n (To Our punishments):\n And We have made Hell\n A prison for those who\n Reject (all Faith),\n9. Verily this Qur-\u0101n\n Doth guide to that\n Which is most right (or stable),\n And giveth the glad tidings\n To the Believers who work\n Deeds of righteousness,\n That they shall have\n A magnificent reward;\n10. And to those who believe not\n In the Hereafter, (it announceth)\n That We have prepared\n For them a Penalty\n Grievous (indeed).\n11. The prayer that man\n Should make for good,\n He maketh for evil;\n For man is given to\n Hasty (deeds).\n12. We have made the Night\n And the Day as two\n(Of Our) Signs: the Sign\n Of the Night have We obscured,\n While the Sign of the Day\n We have made to enlighten\n You; that ye may seek\n Bounty from your Lord,\n And that ye may know\n The number and count\n Of the years: all things\n Have We explained in detail.\n13. Every man's fate\n We have fastened\n On his own neck:\n On the Day of Judgment\n We shall bring out\n For him a scroll,\n Which he will see\n Spread open.\n14. (It will be said to him:)\n \"Read thine (own) record:\n Sufficient is thy soul\n This day to make out\n An account against thee.\"\n15. Who receiveth guidance,\n Receiveth it for his own\n Benefit: who goeth astray\n Doth so to his own loss:\n No bearer of burdens\n Can bear the burden\n Of another: nor would We\n Visit with Our Wrath\n Until We had sent\n An apostle (to give warning).\n16. When We decide to destroy\n A population, We (first) send\n A definite order to those\n Among them who are given\n The good things of this life\n And yet transgress; so that\n The word is proved true\n Against them: then (it is)\n We destroy them utterly.\n17. How many generations\n Have We destroyed. after Noah?\n And enough is thy Lord\n To note and see\n The sins of His servants\n18. If any do wish\n For the transitory things\n (Of this life), We readily\n Grant them\u2014such things\n As We will, to such persons\n As We will: in the end\n Have We provided Hell\n For them: they will burn\n Therein, disgraced and rejected.\n19. Those who do wish\n For the (things of) the\n Hereafter,\n And strive therefor\n With all due striving,\n And have Faith,\u2014\n They are the ones\n Whose striving is acceptable\n (To God).\n20. Of the bounties of thy Lord\n We bestow freely on all\u2014\n These as well as those:\n The bounties of thy Lord\n Are not closed (to anyone).\n21. See how We have bestowed\n More on some than on others;\n But verily the Hereafter\n Is more in rank and gradation\nAnd more in excellence.\n22. Take not with God\n Another object of worship;\n Or thou (O man!) wilt sit\n In disgrace and destitution.'\n23. Why Lord hath decreed\n That ye worship hone but Him,\n And that ye be kind\n To parents. Whether one\n Or both of them attain\n Old age in thy life,\n Say not to them a word\n Of contempt, nor repel them,\n But address them\n In terms of honour.\n24. And, out of kindness,\n Lower to them the wing\n Of humility, and say:\n \"My Lord! bestow on them\n Thy Mercy even as they\n Cherished me in childhood.\n25. Your Lord knoweth best\n What is in your hearts:\n If ye do deeds of righteousness,\n Verily He is Most Forgiving\n To those who turn to Him\n Again and again\n (in true penitence).\n26. And render to the kindred\n Their due rights, as (also)\n To those in want,\n And to the wayfarer:\n But squander not (your wealth)\n In the manner of a spendthrift.\n27. Verily spendthrifts are brothers\n Of the Evil Ones;\n And the Evil One\n Is to his Lord (Himself)\n Ungrateful.\n28. And even if thou hast\n To turn away from them\n In pursuit of the Mercy\n From thy Lord which thou\n Dost expect, yet speak\n To them a word\n Of easy kindness.\n29. Make not thy hand tied\n (Like a niggard's) to thy neck,\n Nor stretch it forth\n To its utmost reach,\n So that thou become\n Blameworthy and destitute.\n30. Verily thy Lord doth provide\n Sustenance in abundance\n For whom He pleaseth, and He\n Provideth in a just measure.\n For He doth know\n And regard all His servants.\n31. Kill not your children\n For fear of want: We shall\n Provide sustenance for them\n As well as for you.\n Verily the killing of them\n Is a great sin.\n32. Nor come nigh to adultery:\n For it is a shameful (deed)\n And an evil, opening the road\n (To other evils).\n33. Nor take life\u2014which God\n Has made sacred\u2014except\n For just cause. And if\n Anyone is slain wrongfully,\n We have given his heir\n Authority (to demand Qi\u1e63\u0101\u1e63\n Or to forgive): but let him\n Not exceed bounds in the matter\n Of taking life; for he\n Is helped (by the Law).\n34. Come not nigh\n To the orphan's property\n Except to improve it,\nUntil he attains the age\n Of full strength; and fulfil\n (Every) engagement,\n For (every) engagement\n Will be enquired into\n (On the Day of Reckoning).\n35. Give full measure when ye\n Measure, and weigh\n With a balance that is straight:\n That is the most fitting\n And the most advantageous\n In the final determination:\n36. And pursue not that\n Of which thou hast\n No knowledge; for\n Every act of hearing,\n Or of seeing\n Or of (feeling in) the heart\n Will be enquired into\n (On the Day of Reckoning).\n37. Nor walk on the earth\n With insolence: for thou\nCanst not rend the earth\n Asunder, nor reach\n The mountains in height.\n38. Of all such things\n The evil is hateful\n In the sight of thy Lord.\n39. These are among the (precepts\n Of) wisdom, which thy Lord\n Has revealed to thee.\n Take not, with God,\n Another object of worship,\n Lest thou shouldst be thrown\n Into Hell, blameworthy and rejected.\n40. Has then your Lord,\n (O Pagans!) preferred for you\n Sons, and taken for Himself\n Daughters among the angels?\n Truly ye utter\n A most dreadful saying!\n41. We have explained (things)\n In various (ways) in this Qur-\u0101n,\n In order that they may receive\n Admonition, but it only increases\n Their flight (from the Truth)!\n42. Say: if there had been\n (Other) gods with Him,\u2014\n As they say,\u2014behold,\n They would certainly have\n Sought out a way\n To the Lord of the Throne!\n43. Glory to Him! He is high\n Above all that they say!\u2014\n Exalted and Great (beyond measure)!\n44. The seven heavens and the earth,\n And all beings therein,\n Declare His glory:\n There is not a thing\n But celebrates His praise;\n And yet ye understand not\n How they declare His glory!\n Verily He is Oft-Forbearing,\n Most Forgiving!\n45. When thou dost recite\n The Qur-\u0101n, We put,\nBetween thee and those who\n Believe not to the Hereafter,\n A veil invisible:\n46. And We put coverings\n Over their hearts (and minds)\n Lest they should understand\n The Our-\u0101n, and deafness\n Into their ears: when thou\n Dost commemorate thy Lord\u2014\n And Him alone\u2014in the Qur-\u0101n,\n They turn on their backs,\n Fleeing (from the Truth).\n47. We know best why it is\n They listen, when they listen\n To thee; and when they\n Meet in private conference,\n Behold, the wicked say,\n \"Ye follow none other than\n A man bewitched!\"\n48. See what similes they strike\n For thee: but they have gone\n Astray, and never can they\n Find a way.\n49. They say: \"What!\n When we are reduced\nTo bones and dust,\n Should we really be raised up\n (To be) a new creation?\n50. Say: \"(Nay!) be ye\n Stones or iron,\n51. \"Or created matter\n Which, in your minds,\n Is hardest (to be raised up),\n (Yet shall ye be raised up)!\"\n Then will they say:\n \"Who will cause us\n To return?\" Say: \"He\n Who created you first!\"\n Then will they wag\n Their heads towards thee,\n And say, \"When will\n That be?\" Say, \"May be\n It will be quite soon!\n52. \"It will be on a Day\n When He will call you,\n And ye will answer\n (His call) with (words\n Of) His praise, and ye\n Will think that ye tarried\n But a little while!\n53. Say to My servants\n That they should (only) say\n Those things that are best:\n For Satan doth sow\n Dissensions among them:\n For Satan is to man\n An avowed enemy.\n54. It is your Lord\n That knoweth you best:\n If He please, He granteth\n You mercy, or if He please,\n Punishment: We have not sent\n Thee to be a disposer\n Of their affairs for them.\n55. And it is your Lord\n That knoweth best all beings\n That are in the heavens\n And on earth: We\n Did bestow on some Prophets\n More (and other) gifts\n Than on others: and We gave\n To David (the gift\n Of) the Psalms.\n56. Say: \"Call on those\u2014\n Besides Him\u2014whom ye fancy:\n They have neither the power\n To remove your troubles\n From you nor to change them.\"\n57. Those whom they call upon\n Do desire (for themselves) means\n Of access to their Lord,\u2014\n Even those who are nearest:\n They hope for His Mercy\n And fear His Wrath:\n For the Wrath of thy Lord\n Is something to take heed of\n58. There is not a population\n But We shall destroy it\n Before the Day of Judgment\n Or punish it with\n A dreadful Penalty:\n That is written\n In the (eternal) Record.\n59. And We refrain from sending\n The Signs, only because\n The men of former generations\n Treated them as false:\nWe sent the She-camel\n To the Tham\u016bd to open\n Their eyes, but they\n Treated her wrongfully:\n We only send the Signs\n By way of terror\n (And warning from evil).\n60. Behold! We told thee\n That thy Lord doth encompass\n Mankind round about:\n We granted the Vision\n Which We showed thee,\n But as a trial for men,\u2014\n As also the Cursed Tree\n (Mentioned) in the Qur-\u0101n:\n We put terror (and warning)\n Into them, but it only\n Increases their inordinate\n transgression!\n61. Behold! We said to the angels:\n \"Bow down unto Adam\":\n They bowed down except Ibl\u012bs\n He said, \"Shall I bow down\n To one whom Thou didst create\n From clay?\"\n62. He said, \"Seest Thou? This is\n The one whom Thou hast honoured\n Above me! If Thou wilt but\n Respite me to the Day\n Of Judgment, I will surely\n Bring his descendants\n Under my sway\n All but a few!\"\n63. (God) said: \"Go thy way;\n If any of them follow thee,\n Verily Hell will be\n The recompense of you (all)\u2014\n An ample recompense.\n64. \"Lead to destruction those\n Whom thou canst among them,\n With thy (seductive) voice;\n Make assaults on them\n With thy cavalry and thy\n Infantry; mutually share\n With them wealth and children;\n And make promises to them.\"\n But Satan promises them\n Nothing but deceit.\n65. \"As for My servants,\n No authority shalt thou\n Have over them:\"\n Enough is thy Lord\n For a Disposer of affairs.\n66. Your Lord is He\n That maketh the Ship\n Go smoothly for you\n Through the sea, in order that\n Ye may seek of His Bounty.\n For He is unto you\n Most Merciful.\n67. When distress seizes you\n At sea, those that ye\n Call upon\u2014besides Himself\u2014\n Leave you in the lurch!\n But when He brings you back\n Safe to land, ye turn\nAway (from Him). Most ungrateful\n Is man!\n68. Do ye then feel secure\n That He will not cause you\n To be swallowed up\n Beneath the earth\n When ye are on land,\n Or that He will not send\n Against you a violent tornado\n (With showers of stones)\n So that ye shall find\n No one to carry out\n Your affairs for you?\n69. Or do ye feel secure\n That He will not send you\n Back a second time\n To sea and send against you\n A heavy gale to drown you\n Because of your ingratitude,\n So that ye find no helper\n Therein against Us?\n70. We have honoured the sons\n Of Adam; provided them\n With transport on land and sea;\n Given them for sustenance things\n Good and pure; and conferred\n On them special favours,\n Above a great part\n Of Our Creation.\n71. One day We shall call\n Together all human beings\n With their (respective) Im\u0101ms:\n Those who are given their record\n In their right hand\n Will read it (with pleasure),\n And they will not be\n Dealt with unjustly\n In the least.\n72. But those who were blind\n In this world, will he\n Blind in the Hereafter,\n And most astray\n From the Path.\n73. And their purpose was\n To tempt thee away\n From that which We\n Had revealed unto thee,\n To substitute in Our name\n Something quite different:\n (In that case), behold!\n They would certainly have\n Made thee (their) friend!\n74. And had We not\n Given thee strength,\nThou wouldst nearly\n Have inclined to them\n A little.\n75. In that case We should\n Have made thee taste\n An equal portion (of punishment)\n In this life, and an equal portion\n In death: and moreover\n Thou wouldst have found\n None to help thee against Us!\n76. Their purpose was to scare\n Thee off the land,\n In order to expel thee;\n But in that case they\n Would not have stayed\n (Therein) after thee,\n Except for a little while.\n77. (This was Our) way\n With the apostles We sent\n Before thee: thou wilt find\n No change in Our ways.\n78. Establish regular prayers\u2014\n At the sun's decline\nTill the darkness of the night,\n And the morning prayer\n And reading: for the prayer\n And reading in the morning\n Carry their testimony.\n79. And pray in the small watches\n Of the morning: (it would be)\n An additional prayer\n (Or spiritual profit)\n For thee: soon will thy Lord\n Raise thee to a Station\n Of Praise and Glory!\n80. Say: \"O my Lord!\n Let my entry be\n By the Gate of Truth\n And Honour, and likewise\n My exit by the Gate\n Of Truth and Honour;\n And grant me\n From Thy Presence\n An authority to aid (me).\n81. And say: \"Truth has (now)\n Arrived, and Falsehood perished:\n For Falsehood is (by its nature)\n Bound to perish.\"\n82. We send down (stage by stage)\n In the Qur-\u0101n that which\n Is a healing and a mercy\n To those who believe:\n To the unjust it causes\n Nothing but loss after loss.\n83. Yet when We bestow\n Our favours on man,\n He turns away and becomes\n Remote on his side (instead\n Of coming to Us), and when\n Evil seizes him he\n Gives himself up to despair!\n84. Say: \"Everyone acts\n According to his own disposition:\n But your Lord knows best\n Who it is that is\n Best guided on the Way.\"\n85. They ask thee concerning\n The Spirit (of inspiration).\n Say: \"The Spirit (cometh)\n By command of my Lord:\n Of knowledge it is only\n A little that is communicated\n To you, (O men!)\"\n86. If it were Our Will,\n We could take away\n That which We have\n Sent thee by inspiration\n Then wouldst thou find\n None to plead thy affair\n In that matter as against Us,\u2014\n87. Except for Mercy from thy Lord:\n For His Bounty is\n To thee (indeed) great.\n88. Say: \"If the whole\n Of mankind and Jinns\n Were to gather together\n To produce the like\n Of this Qur-\u0101n, they\n Could not produce\n The like thereof, even if\n They backed up each other\nWith help and support.\n89. And We have explained\n To man, in this Qur-\u0101n,\n Every kind of similitude:\n Yet the greater part of men\n Refuse (to receive it)\n Except with ingratitude!\n90. They say: \"We shall not\n Believe in thee, until thou\n Cause a spring to gush\n Forth for us from the earth,\n91. \"Or (until) thou have\n A garden of date trees\n And vines, and cause rivers\n To gush forth in their midst,\n Carrying abundant water;\n92. \"Or thou cause the sky\n To fall in pieces, as thou\n Sayest (will happen), against us;\nOr thou bring God\n And the angels before (us)\n Face to face;\n93. \"Or thou have a house\n Adorned with gold,\n Or thou mount a ladder\n Right into the skies.\n No, we shall not even believe\n In thy mounting until thou\n Send down to us a book\n That we could read.\"\n Say: \"Glory to my Lord!\n Am I aught but a man,\u2014\n An apostle?\"\n94. What kept men back\n From Belief when Guidance\n Came to them, was nothing\n But this: they said,\n \"Has God sent a man\n (Like us) to be (His) Apostle?\"\n95. Say, \"If there were settled,\n On earth, angels walking about\nIn peace and quiet, We should\n Certainly have sent them\n Down from the heavens\n An angel for an apostle.\"\n96. Say: \"Enough is God\n For a witness between me\n And you: for He is\n Well acquainted with His servants,\n And He sees (all things).\n97. It is he whom God guides,\n That is on true guidance;\n But he whom He leaves\n Astray\u2014for such wilt thou\n Find no protector besides Him.\n On the Day of Judgment\n We shall gather them together,\n Prone on their faces,\n Blind, dumb, and deaf:\n Their abode will be Hell:\n Every time it shows abatement,\n We shall increase for them\n The fierceness of the Fire.\n98. That is their recompense,\n Because they rejected Our Signs,\n And said, \"When we are reduced\n To bones and broken dust,\n Should we really be raised up\n (To be) a new Creation?\"\n99. See they not that God,\n Who created the heavens\n And the earth, has power\n To create the like of them\n (Anew)? Only He has\n Decreed a term appointed,\n Of which there is no doubt.\n But the unjust refuse\n (To receive it) except\n With ingratitude.\n100. Say: \"If ye had\n Control of the Treasures\n Of the Mercy of my Lord,\n Behold, ye would keep them\n Back, for fear of spending\n Them: for man\n Is (ever) niggardly!\"\n101. To Moses We did give\n Nine Clear Signs:\n Ask the Children of Israel:\n When he came to them,\n Pharaoh said to him:\n \"O Moses! I consider thee,\nIndeed, to have been\n Worked upon by sorcery!\n102. Moses said, \"Thou knowest\n Well that these things\n Have been sent down by none\n But the Lord of the heavens\n And the earth as eye-opening\n Evidence: and I consider thee\n Indeed, O Pharaoh, to be\n One doomed to destruction!\"\n103. So he resolved to remove them\n From the face of the earth:\n But We did drown him\n And all who were with him.\n104. And We said thereafter\n To the Children of Israel,\n \"Dwell securely in the land\n (Of promise)\": but when\n The second of the warnings came\n To pass, We gathered you\n Together in a mingled crowd\n105. We sent down the (Qur-\u0101n)\n In Truth, and in Truth\n Has it descended: and We sent\n Thee but to give Glad\n Tidings and to warn (sinners).\n106. (It is) a Qur-\u0101n\n Which We have divided\n (Into parts from time to time),\n In order that thou mightest\n Recite it to men\n At intervals: We have\n Revealed it by stages.\n107. Say: \"Whether ye believe\n In it or not, it is true\n That those who were given\n Knowledge beforehand, when\n It\u00a0it recited to them,\n Fall down on their faces\n In humble prostration,\n108. \"And they say, \"Glory\n To our Lord! Truly\n Has the promise of our Lord\n Been fulfilled!\"\n109. They fall down on their faces\n In tears, and it increases\n Their (earnest) humility!\n110. Say: \"Call upon God, or\n Call upon Ra\u1e25m\u0101n:\n By whatever name ye call\n Upon Him, (it is well):\n For to Him belong\n The Most Beautiful Names.\n Neither speak thy Prayer aloud,\n Nor speak it in a low tone,\n But seek a middle course\n Between.\"\n111. Say: \"Praise be to God,\n Who begets no son,\n And has no partner\n In (His) dominion:\n Nor (needs) He any\n To protect Him from\n humiliation:\n Yea, magnify Him\n For His greatness and glory!\"","title":"The Holy Quran: S\u016bra XVII.
