K\u0101f. H\u0101. Y\u0101. \u2018Ain \u1e62\u0101d.\n2. (This is) a recital\n Of the Mercy of thy Lord\n To His servant Zakar\u012bya.\n3. Behold! he cried\n To his Lord in secret,\n4. Praying: \"O my Lord!\n Infirm indeed are my bones,\n And the hair of my head\n Doth glisten with grey:\n But never am I unblest,\n O my Lord, in my prayer\n To Thee!\n5. \"Now I fear (what)\n My relatives (and colleagues)\n (Will do) after me:\n But my wife is barren:\n So give me an heir\n As from Thyself,\u2014\n6. \"(One that) will (truly)\n \"Represent me, and represent\n The posterity of Jacob;\n And make him, O my Lord!\n One with whom Thou art\n Well-pleased!\"\n7. (His prayer was answered):\n\"O Zakar\u012bya! We give thee\n Good news of a son:\n His name shall be Ya\u1e25y\u0101:\n On none by that name\n Have We conferred distinction before.\"\n8. He said: \"O my Lord!\n How shall I have a son,\n When my wife is barren\n And I have grown quite decrepit\n From old age?\"\n9. He said: \"So (it will be):\n Thy Lord saith, \"That is\n Easy for Me: I did\n Indeed create thee before,\n When thou hadst been nothing!\"\n10. (Zakar\u012bya) said: \"O my Lord!\n Give me a Sign.\"\n \"Thy Sign,\" was the answer,\n \"Shall be that thou\n Shalt speak to no man\n For three nights,\n Although thou art not dumb.\"\n11. So Zakar\u012bya came out\n To his people\n From his chamber:\n He told them by signs\n To celebrate God's praises\n In the morning\n And in the evening.\n12. (To his son came the command):\n \"O Ya\u1e25y\u0101! take hold\nOf the Book with might\":\n And We gave him Wisdom\n Even as a youth,\n13. And pity (for all creatures)\n As from us, and purity:\n He was devout,\n14. And kind to his parents,\n And he was not overbearing\n Or rebellious.\n15. So Peace on him\n The day he was born,\n The day that he dies,\n And the day that he\n Will be raised up\n To life (again)\n16. Relate in the Book\n (The story of) Mary,\n When she withdrew\n From her family\n To a place in the East.\n17. She placed a screen\n (To screen herself) from them;\n Then We sent to her\n Our angel, and he appeared\n Before her as a man\n In all respects.\n18. She said: \"I seek refuge\n From thee to (God)\n Most Gracious: (come not near)\n If thou dost fear God.\"\n19. He said: \"Nay, I am only\n A messenger from thy Lord,\n (To announce) to thee\n The gift of a holy son.\"\n20. She said: \"How shall I\n Have a son, seeing that\n No man has touched me,\n And I am not unchaste?\"\n21. He said: \"So (it will be):\n Thy Lord saith, \"That is\n Easy for Me: and (We\n Wish) to appoint him\n As a Sign unto men\n And a Mercy from Us\":\nIt is a matter\n (So) decreed.\"\n22. So she conceived him,\n And she retired with him\n To a remote place.\n23. And the pains of childbirth\n Drove her to the trunk\n Of a palm-tree:\n She cried (in her anguish):\n \"Ah! would that I had\n Died before this! would that\n I had been a thing\n Forgotten and out of sight!\"\n24. But (a voice) cried to her\n From beneath the (palm-tree):\n \"Grieve not! for thy Lord\n Hath provided a rivulet\n Beneath thee;\n25. \"And shake towards thyself\n The trunk of the palm-tree:\n It will let fall\n Fresh ripe dates upon thee\n26. \"So eat and drink\n And cool (thine) eye.\n And if thou dost see\n Any man, say, 'I have\nVowed a fast to (God)\n Most Gracious, and this day\n Will I enter into no talk\n With any human being'\"\n27. At length she brought\n The (babe) to her people,\n Carrying him (in her arms).\n They said: \"O Mary!\n Truly an amazing thing\n Hast thou brought!\n28. \"O sister of Aaron!\n Thy father was not\n A man of evil, nor thy\n Mother a woman unchaste!\"\n29. But she pointed to the babe.\n They said: \"How can we\n Talk to one who is\n A child in the cradle?\"\n30. He said: \"I am indeed\n A servant of God:\n He hath given me\n Revelation and made me\n A prophet;\n31. \"And He hath made me\n Blessed wheresoever I be,\nAnd hath enjoined on me\n Prayer and Charity as long\n As I live;\n32. \"(He) hath made me kind\n To my mother, and not\n Overbearing or miserable;\n33. \"So Peace is on me\n The day I was born,\n The day that I die,\n And the day that I\n Shall be raised up\n To life (again)\"!\n34. Such (was) Jesus the son\n Of Mary: (it is) a statement\n Of truth, about which\n They (vainly) dispute.\n35. It is not befitting\n To (the majesty of) God\n That He should beget\n A son. Glory be to Him!\n When He determines\n A matter, He only says\n To it, \"Be\", and it is.\n36. Verily God is my Lord\n And your Lord: Him\nTherefore serve ye: this is\n A Way that is straight.\n37. But the sects differ\n Among themselves: and woe\n To the Unbelievers because\n Of the (coming) Judgment\n Of a momentous Day!\n38. How plainly will they see\n And hear, the Day that\n They will appear before Us!\n But the unjust to-day\n Are in error manifest!\n39. But warn them of the Day\n Of Distress, when\n The matter will be determined:\n For (behold,) they are negligent\n And they do not believe!\n40. It is We Who will inherit\n The earth, and all beings\n Thereon: to Us will they\n All be returned.\n41. (Also) mention in the Book\n (The story of) Abraham:\n He was a man of Truth,\n A prophet.\n42. Behold, he said to his father:\n \"O my father! why\n Worship that which heareth not\n And seeth not, and can\n Profit thee nothing?\n43. \"O my father! to me\n Hath come knowledge which\n Hath not reached thee:\n So follow me: I will guide\n Thee to a Way that\n Is even and straight.\n44. \"O my father! serve not\n Satan: for Satan is\n A rebel against (God)\n Most Gracious\n45. \"O my father! I fear\n Lest a Penalty afflict thee\n From (God) Most Gracious,\n So that thou become\n To Satan a friend.\"\n46. (The father) replied: \"Dost thou\n Hate my gods, O Abraham?\n If thou forbear not, I will\n Indeed stone thee:\n Now get away from me\n For a good long while!\"\n47. Abraham said: \"Peace be\n On thee: I will pray\n To my Lord for thy\n forgiveness:\n For He is to me\n Most Gracious.\n48. \"And I will turn away\n From you (all) and from those\n Whom ye invoke besides God:\n I will call on my Lord:\n Perhaps, by my prayer to my Lord,\n I shall be not unblest.\"\n49. When he had turned away\n From them and from those\n Whom they worshipped besides\n God, We bestowed on him\n Isaac and Jacob, and each one\n Of them We made a prophet.\n50. And We bestowed\n Of Our Mercy on them,\n And We granted them\n Lofty honour on the tongue\n Of truth.\n51. Also mention in the Book\n (The story of) Moses:\n For he was specially chosen,\n And he was an apostle\n (And) a prophet.\n52. And We called him\n From the right side\n Of Mount (Sinai), and made\n Him draw near to Us,\n For mystic (converse).\n53. And, out of Our Mercy,\n We gave him his brother\n Aaron, (also.) a prophet.\n54. Also mention in the Book\n (The story of) Ism\u0101\u2018\u012bl\n He was (strictly) true\n To what he promised,\n And he was an apostle\n (And) a prophet.\n55. He used to enjoin\n On his people Prayer\n And Charity, and he was\n Most acceptable in the sight\n Of his Lord.\n56. Also mention in the Book\n The case of Idr\u012bs\n He was a man of truth\n (And sincerity), (and) a prophet:\n57. And We raised him\n To a lofty station.\n58. Those were some\n Of the prophets on whom\n God did bestow His Grace,\u2014\n Of the posterity of Adam,\n And of those whom We\n Carried (in the Ark)\n With Noah, and of\n The posterity of Abraham\n And Israel\u2014of those\n Whom We guided and chose.\nWhenever the Signs\n Of (God) Most Gracious\n Were rehearsed to them,\n They would fall down\n In prostrate adoration\n And in tears.\n59. But after them there followed\n A posterity who missed\n Prayers and followed after lusts\n Soon, then, will they\n Face Destruction,\u2014\n60. Except those who repent\n And believe, and work\n Righteousness: for these\n Will enter the Garden\n And will not be wronged\n In the least,\u2014\n61. Gardens of Eternity, those\n Which (God) Most Gracious\n Has promised to His servants\n In the Unseen: for His promise\n Must (necessarily) come to pass.\n62. They will not there hear\n Any vain discourse, but\n Only salutations of Peace:\n And they will have therein\n Their sustenance, morning\n And evening.\n63. Such is the Garden which\n We give as an inheritance\n To those of Our servants\n Who guard against evil.\n64. (The angels say:)\n \"We descend not but\n By command of thy Lord:\n To Him belongeth what is\n Before us and what is\n Behind us, and what is\n Between: and thy Lord\n Never doth forget,\u2014\n65. \"Lord of the heavens\n And of the earth,\n And of all that is\n Between them: so worship Him,\n And be constant and patient\n In His worship: knowest thou\n Of any who is worthy\n Of the same Name as He?\"\n66. Man says: \"What!\n When I am dead, shall I\n Then be raised up alive?\"\n67. But does not man\n Call to mind that We\n Created him before\n Out of nothing?\n68. So, by thy Lord,\n Without doubt, We shall gather\n Them together, and (also)\n The Evil Ones (with them);\n Then shall We bring them\n Forth on their knees\n Round about Hell;\n69. Then shall We certainly\n Drag out from every sect\n All those who were worst\n In obstinate rebellion\n Against (God) Most Gracious.\n70. And certainly We know best\n Those who are most worthy\n Of being burned therein.\n71. Not one of you but will\n Pass over it: this is,\n With thy Lord, a Decree\n Which must be accomplished.\n72. But We shall save those\n Who guarded against evil,\n And We shall leave\n The wrong-doers therein,\n (Humbled) to their knees.\n73. When Our Clear Signs\n Are rehearsed to them,\n The Unbelievers say to those\n Who believe, \"Which of the two\n Sides is best in point of\n Position? which makes the best\n Show in Council?\"\n74. But how many (countless)\n Generations before them\n Have We destroyed,\n Who were even better\n In equipment and in glitter\n To the eye?\n75. Say: \"If any men go\n Astray, (God) Most Gracious\n Extends (the rope) to them,\n Until, when they see\n The warning of God (being\n Fulfilled)\u2014either in punishment\n Or in (the approach of)\n The Hour,\u2014they will\n At length realise who is\n Worst in position, and (who)\n Weakest in forces!\n76. \"And God doth advance\n In guidance those who seek\n Guidance: and the things\n That endure, Good Deeds,\n Are best in the sight\n Of thy Lord, as rewards,\n And best in respect of\n (Their) eventual returns.\"\n77. Hast thou then seen\n The (sort of) man who\n Rejects Our Signs, yet\n Says: \"I shall certainly\n Be given wealth and children?\"\n78. Has he penetrated to\n The Unseen, or has he\n Taken a contract with\n (God) Most Gracious?\n79. Nay! We shall record\n What he says, and We\n Shall add and add\n To his punishment.\n80. To Us shall return\n All that he talks of,\n And he shall appear\n Before Us bare and alone.\n81. And they have taken\n (For worship) gods other than\n God, to give them\n Power and glory!\n82. Instead, they shall reject\n Their worship, and become\n Adversaries against them.\n83. Seest thou not that We\n Have set the Evil Ones on\n Against the Unbelievers,\n To incite them with fury?\n84. So make no haste\n Against them, for We\n But count out to them\n A (limited) number (of days).\n85. The day We shall gather\n The righteous to (God)\n Most Gracious, like a hand\n Presented before a king for honours,\n86. And We shall drive\n The sinners to hell,\n Like thirsty cattle\n Driven down to water,\u2014\n87. None shall have the power\n Of intercession, but such a one\n As has received permission (or promise)\n From (God) Most Gracious.\n88. They say: \"(God) Most Gracious\n Has begotten a son!\"\n89. Indeed ye have put forth\n A thing most monstrous!\n90. At it the skies are ready\n To burst, the earth\n To split asunder, and\n The mountains to fall down\n In utter ruin,\n91. That they should invoke\n A son for (God) Most Gracious.\n92. For it is not consonant\n With the majesty of (God)\n Most Gracious that He\n Should beget a son.\n93. Not one of the beings\n In the heavens and the earth\n But must come to (God)\n Most Gracious as a servant.\n94. He does take an account\n Of them (all), and hath\n Numbered them (all) exactly.\n95. And everyone of them\n Will come to Him singly\n On the Day of Judgment.\n96. On those who believe\n And work deeds of righteousness,\n Will (God) Most Gracious\n Bestow Love.\n97. So have We made\n The (Qur-\u0101n) easy\n In thine own tongue,\n That with it thou mayest give\nGlad tidings to the righteous,\n And warnings to people\n Given to contention.\n98. But how many (countless)\n Generations before them\n Have We destroyed? Canst thou\n Find a single one of them\n (Now) or hear.
