We have not sent down\n The Qur-\u0101n to thee to be\n (An occasion) for thy distress,\n3. But only as an admonition\n To those who fear (God),\u2014\n4. A revelation from Him\n Who created the earth\n And the heavens on high.\n5. (God) Most Gracious\n Is firmly established\n On the throne (of authority).\n6. To Him belongs what is\n In the heavens and on earth,\n And all between them,\n And all beneath the soil.\n7. If thou pronounce the word\n Aloud, (it is no matter):\nFor verily He knoweth\n What is secret and what\n Is yet more hidden.\n8. God! there is no god\n But He! To Him belong\n The Most Beautiful Names.\n9. Has the story of Moses\n Reached thee?\n10. Behold, he saw a fire:\n So he said to his family,\n\"Tarry ye; I perceive\n A fire; perhaps I can\n Bring you some burning brand\n Therefrom, or find some guidance\n At the fire.\"\n11. But when he came\n To the fire, a voice\n Was heard: \"O Moses!\n12. \"Verily I am thy Lord!\n Therefore (in My presence)\n Put off thy shoes: thou art\n In the sacred valley \u1e6cuw\u0101\n13. \"I have chosen thee:\n Listen, then, to the inspiration\n (Sent to thee).\n14. \"Verily, I am God:\n There is no god but I:\n So serve thou Me (only),\n And establish regular prayer\n For celebrating My praise.\n15. \"Verily the Hour is coming\u2014\n My design is to keep it\nHidden\u2014for every soul\n To receive its reward\n By the measure of\n Its Endeavour.\n16. \"Therefore let not such as\n Believe not therein\n But follow their own\n Lusts, divert thee therefrom,\n Lest thou perish!\"\u2026\n17. \"And what is that\n In thy right hand,\n O Moses?\"\n18. He said, \"It is\n My rod: on it\n I lean; with it\n I beat down fodder\n For my flocks; and\n In it I find\n Other uses.\"\n19. (God) said, \"Throw it,\n O Moses!\"\n20. He threw it, and behold!\n It was a snake,\n Active in motion.\n21. (God) said, \"Seize it,\n And fear not: We\n Shall return it at once\n To its former condition\"\u2026\n22. \"Now draw thy hand\n Close to thy side:\n It shall come forth white\n (And shining), without harm\n (Or stain),\u2014as another Sign,\u2014\n23. \"In order that We\n May show thee\n (Two) of our Greater Signs.\n24. \"Go thou to Pharaoh,\n For he has indeed\n Transgressed all bounds.\"\n25. (Moses) said: \"O my Lord!\n Expand me my breast;\n26. \"Ease my task for me;\n27. \"And remove the impediment\n From my speech,\n28. \"So they may understand\n What I say:\n29. \"And give me a Minister\n From my family,\n30. \"Aaron, my brother;\n31. \"Add to my strength\n Through him,\n32. \"And make him share\n My task:\n33. \"That we may celebrate\n Thy praise without stint,\n34. \"And remember Thee\n Without stint:\n35. \"For Thou art He\n That (ever) regardeth us.\"\n36. (God) said: \"Granted\n Is thy prayer, O Moses!\"\n37. \"And indeed We conferred\n A favour on thee\n Another time (before).\n38. \"Behold! We sent\n To thy mother, by inspiration,\n The message:\n39. \"Throw (the child)\n Into the chest, and throw\n (The chest) into the river:\n The river will cast him\n Up on the bank, and he\n Will be taken up by one\n Who is an enemy to Me\n And an enemy to him\n But I cast (the garment\n Of) love over thee from Me\n And (this) in order that\n Thou mayest be reared\n Under Mine eye.\n40. \"Behold! thy sister goeth forth\n And saith, \"Shall I show you\nOne who will nurse\n And rear the (child)?\n So We brought thee back\n To thy mother, that her eye\n Might be cooled and she\n Should not grieve.\n Then thou didst slay\n A man, but We saved thee\n From trouble, and We tried\n Thee in various ways.\n Then didst thou tarry\n A number of years\n With the people of Midian.\n Then didst thou come hither\n As ordained, O Moses!\n41. \"And I have prepared thee\n For Myself (for service)\"\u2026\n42. \"Go, thou and thy brother,\n With My Signs,\nAnd slacken not,\n Either of you, in keeping\n Me in remembrance.\n43. \"Go, both of you, to Pharaoh,\n For he has indeed\n Transgressed all bounds;\n44. \"But speak to him mildly;\n Perchance he may take\n Warning or fear (God).\"\n45. They (Moses and Aaron) said:\n \"Our Lord! We fear lest\n He hasten with insolence\n Against us, or lest he\n Transgress all bounds.\"\n46. He said: \"Fear not:\n For I am with you:\n I hear and see (everything).\n47. \"So go ye both to him,\n And say, \"Verily we are\n Apostles sent by thy Lord:\n Send forth, therefore, the Children\n Of Israel with us, and\n Afflict them not:\n With a Sign, indeed,\n Have we come from thy Lord!\nAnd Peace to all\n Who follow guidance!\n48. \"Verily it has been revealed\n To us that the Penalty\n (Awaits) those who reject\n And turn away.\"\n49. (When this message was delivered),\n (Pharaoh) said: \"Who, then,\n O Moses, is the Lord\n Of you two?\"\n50. He said: \"Our Lord is\n He Who gave to each\n (Created) thing its form\n And nature, and further,\n Gave (it) guidance.\"\n51. (Pharaoh) said: \"What then\n Is the condition\n Of previous generations?\"\n52. He replied: \"The knowledge\n Of that is with my Lord,\n Duly recorded: my Lord\n Never errs, nor forgets,\u2014\n53. \"He Who has made for you\n The earth like a carpet\n Spread out; has enabled you\n To go about therein by roads\n (And channels); and has sent\n Down water from the sky.\"\n With it have We produced\n Divers pairs of plants\n Each separate front the others.\n54. Eat (for yourselves) and pasture\n Your cattle: verily, in this\n Are Signs for men\n Endued with understanding.\n55. From the (earth) did We\n Create you, and into it\n Shall We return you,\n And from it shall We\n Bring you out once again\"\n56. And We showed Pharaoh\n All Our Signs, but he\n Did reject and refuse.\n57. He said: \"Hast thou come\n To drive us out\n Of our land with thy magic,\n O Moses?\n58. \"But we can surely produce\n Magic to match thine!\n So make a tryst\n Between us and thee,\n Which we shall not fail\n To keep\u2014neither we nor thou\u2014\n In a place where both\n Shall have even chances.\"\n59. Moses said: \"Your tryst\n Is the Day of the Festival,\n And let the people be assembled\n When the sun is well up.\"\n60. So Pharaoh withdrew:\n He concerted his plan,\n And then came (back).\n61. Moses said to him:\n Woe to you! Forge not\n Ye a lie against God,\n Lest He destroy you (at once)\nUtterly by chastisement:\n The forger must suffer\n Frustration!\"\n62. So they disputed, one with\n Another, over their affair,\n But they kept their talk secret.\n63. They said: \"These two\n Are certainly (expert) magicians:\n Their object is to drive you\n Out from your land\n With their magic, and\n To do away with your\n Most cherished institutions.\n64. \"Therefore concert your plan,\n And then assemble\n In (serried) ranks:\n He wins (all along) to-day\n Who gains the upper hand\"\n65. They said: \"O Moses!\n Whether wilt thou\n That thou throw (first)\n Or that we be the first\n To throw?\"\n66. He said, \"Nay, throw ye\n First!\" Then behold\nTheir ropes and their rods\u2014\n So it seemed to him\n On account of their magic\u2014\n Began to be in lively motion!\n67. So Moses conceived\n In his mind\n A (sort of) fear.\n68. We said: \"Fear not!\n For thou hast indeed\n The upper hand:\n69. \"Throw that which is\n In thy right hand:\n Quickly will it swallow up\n That which they have faked\n What they have faked\n Is but a magician's trick:\n And the magician thrives not,\n (No matter) where he goes.\"\n70. So the magicians were\n Thrown down to prostration:\n They said, \"We believe\n In the Lord of Aaron and Moses\".\n71. (Pharaoh) said: \"Believe ye\n In Him before I give\n You permission? Surely\n This must be your leader,\n Who has taught you magic!\n Be sure I will cut off\nYour hands and feet\n On opposite sides, and I\n Will have you crucified\n On trunks of palm-trees:\n So shall ye know for certain,\n Which of us can give\n The more severe and the more\n Lasting Punishment!\"\n72. They said: \"Never shall we\n Regard thee as more than\n The Clear Signs that have\n Come to us; or than\n Him Who created us!\n So decree whatever thou\n Desirest to decree: for thou\n Canst only decree (touching)\n The life of this world.\n73. \"For us, we have believed\n In our Lord: may He\n Forgive us our faults,\n And the magic to which\n Thou didst compel us:\n For God is Best\n And Most Abiding.\"\n74. Verily he who comes\n To his Lord as a sinner\n (At Judgment),\u2014for him\n Is Hell: therein shall he\n Neither die nor live.\n75. But such as come\n To Him as Believers\n Who have worked righteous deeds,\u2014\n For them are ranks exalted,\u2014\n76. Gardens of Eternity,\n Beneath which flow rivers:\n They will dwell therein\n For aye: such is the reward\n Of those who purify\n Themselves (from evil).\n77. We sent an inspiration\n To Moses: \"Travel by night\n With My servants, and strike\n A dry path for them\n Through the sea, without fear\n Of being overtaken (by Pharaoh)\n And without (any other) fear.\"\n78. Then Pharaoh pursued them\n With his forces, but\n The waters completely overwhelmed\n Them and covered them up.\n79. Pharaoh led his people astray\n Instead of leading them aright.\n80. O ye Children of Israel!\n We delivered you from\n Your enemy, and We\n Made a Covenant with you\n On the right side of\n Mount (Sinai), and We sent\n Down to you Manna\n And quails:\n81. (Saying): \"Eat of the good\n Things We have provided\n For your sustenance, but\n Commit no excess therein,\n Lest My Wrath should justly\n Descend on you: and those\n On whom descends My Wrath\n Do perish indeed!\n82. \"But, without doubt, I am\n (Also) He that forgives\n Again and again, to those\n Who repent, believe,\n And do right,\u2014who,\n In fine, are ready to receive\n True guidance.\"\n83. (When Moses was up on the Mount,\n God said:) \"What made thee\n Hasten in advance of thy people,\n O Moses?\"\n84. He replied: \"Behold, they are\n Close on my footsteps:\nI hastened to Thee.\n O my Lord,\n To please Thee.\"\n85. (God) said: \"We have tested\n Thy people in thy absence:\n The S\u0101mir\u012b has led them\n Astray.\"\n86. So Moses returned to his people\n In a state of indignation\n And sorrow. He said:\n \"O my people! did not\n Your Lord make a handsome\n Promise to you? Did then\n The promise seem to you\n Long (in coming)? Or did ye\n Desire that Wrath should\n Descend from your Lord on you,\n And so ye broke your promise\n To me?\"\n87. They said: \"We broke not\n The promise to thee, as far\n As lay in our power:\n But we were made to carry\n The weight of the ornaments\n Of the (whole) people, and we\nThrew them (into the fire),\n And that was what\n The S\u0101mir\u012b suggested.\n88. \"Then he brought out\n (Of the fire) before the (people)\n The image of a calf:\n It seemed to low:\n So they said, \"This is\n Your god, and the god\n Of Moses, but (Moses)\n Has forgotten!\"\n89. Could they not see that\n It could not return them\n A word (for answer), and that\n It had no power either\n To harm them or\n To do them good?\n90. Aaron had already, before this\n Said to them: .\"O my people!\n Ye are being tested in this:\n For verily your Lord is (God)\n Most Gracious: so follow me\n And obey my command.\"\n91. They had said: \"We will not\n Abandon this cult, but we\n Will devote ourselves to it\n Until Moses returns to us.\n92. (Moses) said: \"O Aaron!\n What kept thee back, when\n Thou sawest them going wrong,\n93. \"From following me? Didst thou\n Then disobey my order?\"\n94. (Aaron) replied: \"O son\n Of my mother! Seize (me) not\n By my beard nor by\n (The hair of) my head!\n Truly I feared lest thou\n Shouldst say, \"Thou hast caused\n A division among the Children\n Of Israel, and thou didst not\n Respect my word!\"\n95. (Moses) said: \"What then\n Is thy case, O S\u0101mar\u012b?\"\n96. He replied: \"I saw what\n They saw not: so I took\nA handful (of dust) from\n The footprint of the Apostle,\n And threw it (into the calf):\n Thus did my soul suggest\n To me.\"\n97. (Moses) said: \"Get thee gone!\n But thy (punishment) in this life\n Will be that thou wilt say,\n 'Touch me not'; and moreover\n (For a future penalty) thou hast\n A promise that will not fail:\n Now look at thy god,\n Of whom thou hast become\n A devoted worshipper:\n We will certainly (melt) it\n In a blazing fire and scatter\n It broadcast in the sea!\"\n98. But the God of you all\n Is the One God: there is\n No god but He: all things\n He comprehends in His knowledge.\n99. Thus do We relate to thee\n Some stories of what happened\n Before: for We have sent\n Thee a Message from\n Our own Presence,\n100. If any do turn away\n Therefrom, verily they will\n Bear a burden\n On the Day of Judgment;\n101. They will abide in this (state):\n And grievous will the burden\n Be to them on that Day,\u2014\n102. The Day when the Trumpet\n Will be sounded: that Day,\n We shall gather the sinful,\n Blear-eyed (with terror).\n103. In whispers will they consult\n Each other: \"Ye tarried not\n Longer than ten (Days);\"\n104. We know best what they\n Will say, when their leader\nMost eminent in Conduct\n Will say: \"Ye tarried not\n Longer than a day!\"\n105. They ask thee concerning\n The Mountains: say, \"My Lord\n Will uproot them and scatter\n Them as dust;\n106. \"He will leave them as plains\n Smooth and level;\n107. \"Nothing crooked or curved\n Wilt thou see in their place.\"\n108. On that Day will they follow\n The Caller (straight): no crookedness\n(Can they show) him: all sounds\n Shall humble themselves in\n The Presence of (God) Most Gracious:\n Nothing shalt thou hear\n But the tramp of their feet\n (As they march).\n109. On that Day shall no\n Intercession avail\n Except for those for whom\n Permission has been granted\n By (God) Most Gracious\n And whose word is\n Acceptable to Him.\n110. He knows what (appears\n To His creatures as) before\n Or after or behind them:\n But they shall not compass it\n With their knowledge.\n111. (All) faces shall be humbled\n Before (Him)\u2014the Living,\n The Self-Subsisting, Eternal:\n Hopeless indeed will be\n The man that carries\n Iniquity (on his back).\n112. But he who works deeds\n Of righteousness, and has faith,\n Will have no fear of harm\n Nor of any curtailment\n (Of what is his due).\n113. Thus have We sent this\n Down\u2014an Arabic Qur-\u0101n\u2014\n And explained therein in detail\n Some of the warnings,\n In order that they may\n Fear God, or that it may\n Cause their remembrance (of Him).\n114. High above all is God,\n The King, the Truth!\n Be not in haste\n With the Qur-\u0101n before\n Its revelation to thee\n Is completed, but say,\n \"O my Lord! advance me\n In knowledge.\"\n115. We had already, beforehand,\n Taken the covenant of Adam,\nBut he forgot: and We found\n On his part no firm resolve.\n116. When We said to the angels,\n \"Prostrate yourselves to Adam\",\n They prostrated themselves, but not\n Ibl\u012bs: he refused.\n117. Then We said: \"O Adam!\n Verily, this is an enemy\n To thee and thy wife:\n So let him not get you\n Both out of the Garden,\n So that thou art landed\n In misery.''\n118. \"There is therein (enough provision)\n For thee not to go hungry\n Nor to go naked,\n119. \"Nor to suffer from thirst,\n Nor from the sun's heat.\"\n120. But Satan whispered evil\n To him: he said, \"O Adam!\n Shall I lead thee to\n The Tree of Eternity\n And to a kingdom\n That never decays?\"\n121. In the result, they both\n Ate of the tree, and so\n Their nakedness appeared\n To them: they began to sew\n Together, for their covering,\n Leaves from the Garden:\n Thus did Adam disobey\n His Lord, and allow himself\n To be seduced.\n122. But his Lord chose him\n (For His Grace): He turned\n To him, and gave him guidance.\n123. He said: \"Get ye down,\n Both of you,\u2014all together,\n From the Garden, with enmity\n One to another: but if,\n As is sure, there comes to you\n Guidance from Me, whosoever\n Follows My guidance, will not\n Lose his way, nor fall\n Into misery.\n124. \"But whosoever turns away\n From My Message, verily\n For him is a life narrowed\n Down, and We shall raise\nHim up blind on the Day\n Of Judgment.\"\n125. He will say: \"O my Lord!\n Why hast thou raised me\n Up blind, while I had\n Sight (before)?\"\n126. (God) will say: \"Thus\n Didst thou, when Our Signs\n Came unto thee, disregard\n Them: so wilt thou,\n This day, be disregarded.\"\n127. And thus do We recompense\n Him who transgresses beyond bounds\n And believes not in the Signs\n Of his Lord: and the Penalty\n Of the Hereafter is far more\n Grievous and more enduring.\n128. Is it not a warning to such\n Men (to call to mind)\n How many generations before them\n We destroyed, in whose haunts\n They (now) move? Verily,\n In this are Signs for men\n Endued with understanding.\n129. Had it not been\n For a Word that went forth\n Before from thy Lord,\n (Their punishment) must necessarily\n Have come; but there is\n A term appointed (for respite).\n130. Therefore be patient with what\n They say, and celebrate (constantly)\n The praises of thy Lord,\n Before the rising of the sun,\n And before its setting;\n Yea, celebrate them\n For part of the hours\n Of the night, and at the sides\n Of the day: that thou\n Mayest have (spiritual) joy.\n131. Nor strain thine eyes in longing\n For the things We have given\n For enjoyment to parties ,\n Of them, the splendour\nOf the life of this world,\n Through which We test them:\n But the provision of thy Lord\n Is better and more enduring.\n132. Enjoin prayer on thy people,\n And be constant therein.\n We ask thee not to provide\n Sustenance: We provide it\n For thee. But the (fruit of)\n The Hereafter is for Righteousness.\n133. ''They say: \"Why does he not\n Bring us a Sign from\n His Lord?\" Has not\n A Clear Sign come to them\n Of all that was\n In the former Books\n Of revelation?\n134. And if We had inflicted\n On them a penalty before this,\n They would have said:\n \"Our Lord! If only Thou\n Hadst sent us an apostle,\n We should certainly have followed\nThy Signs before we were\n Humbled and put to shame.\"\n135.
