O mankind! Fear your Lord!\n For the convulsion of the Hour\n (Of Judgment) will be\n A thing terrible!\n2. The Day ye shall see it,\n Every mother giving suck\n Shall forget her suckling-babe,\n And every pregnant female\n Shall drop her load (unformed):\n Thou shalt see mankind\n As in a drunken riot,\n Yet not drunk: but dreadful\n Will be the Wrath of God.\n3. And yet among men\n There are such as dispute\n About God, without knowledge,\n And follow every evil one\n Obstinate in rebellion!\n4. About the (Evil One)\n It is decreed that whoever\n Turns to him for friendship,\n Him will he lead astray,\n And he will guide him\n To the Penalty of the Fire.\n5. O mankind! if ye have\n A doubt about the Resurrection,\n (Consider) that We created you\n Out of dust, then out of\n Sperm, then out of a leech-like\n Clot, then out of a morsel\n Of flesh, partly formed\n And partly unformed, in order\n That We may manifest\n (Our power) to you;\n And We cause whom We will\n To rest in the wombs\n For an appointed term,\n Then do We bring you out\n As babes, then (foster you)\n That ye may reach your age\n Of full strength; and some\n Of you are called to die,\n And some are sent back\n To the feeblest old age,\n So that they know nothing\n After having known (much),\n And (further), thou seest\n The earth barren and lifeless,\n But when We pour down\n Rain on it, it is stirred\n (To life), it swells,\n And it puts forth every kind\n Of beautiful growth (in pairs).\n6. This is so, because God\n Is the Reality: it is He\n Who gives life to the dead,\n And it is He Who has\n Power over all things.\n7. And verily the Hour will come:\n There can be no doubt\n About it, or about (the fact)\n That God will raise up\n All who are in the graves.\n8. Yet there is among men\n Such a one as disputes\n About God, without knowledge,\n Without guidance, and without\n A Book of Enlightenment,\u2014\n9. (Disdainfully) bending his side,\n In order to lead (men) astray\n From the Path of God:\n For him there is disgrace\n In this life, and on the Day\n Of Judgment We shall\n Make him taste the Penalty\n Of burning (Fire).\n10. (It will be said): \"This is\n Because of the deeds which\n Thy hands sent forth,\n For verily God is not\n Unjust to His servants.\"\n11. There are among men\n Some who serve God,\n As it were, on the verge:\n If good befalls them, they are,\n Therewith, well content; but\n If a trial comes to them,\n They turn on their faces:\n They lose both this world\n And the Hereafter: that\n Is loss for all to see!\n12. They call on such deities:\n Besides God, as can neither\n Hurt nor profit them:\n That is straying far indeed\n (From the Way)!\n13. (Perhaps) they call on one\n Whose hurt is nearer\n Than his profit: evil, indeed,\n Is the patron, and evil\n The companion (for help)!\n14. Verily God will admit\n Those who believe and work\n Righteous deeds, to Gardens,\n Beneath which rivers flow:\n For God carries out\n All that He plans,\n15. If any think that God\n Will not help him\n (His Apostle) in this world\n And the Hereafter, let him\n Stretch out a rope\n To the ceiling and cut (himself)\n Off: then let him see\n Whether his plan will remove\n That which enrages (him)!\n16. Thus have We sent down\n Clear Signs; and verily\n God Both guide whom\n He will!\n17. Those who believe (in the Qur-\u0101n),\n Those who follow the Jewish (scriptures),\n And the Sabians, Christians,\n Magians, and Polytheists,\u2014\n God will judge between them\nOn the Day of Judgment:\n For God is witness\n Of all things.\n18. Seest thou not that\n To God bow down in worship\n All things that are\n In the heavens and on earth,\u2014\n The sun, the moon, the stars;\n The hills, the trees, the animals;\n And a great number among\n Mankind? But a great number\n Are (also) such as are\n Fit for Punishment: and such\n As God shall disgrace,\n None can raise to honour:\n For God carries out\n All that He wills.\n19. These two antagonists dispute\n With each other about their Lord:\n But those who deny (their Lord),\u2014\n For them will be cut out\n A garment of Fire:\n Over their heads will be\n Poured out boiling water.\n20. With it will be scalded\n What is within their bodies,\n As well as (their) skins.\n21. In addition there will be\n Maces of iron (to punish) them.\n22. Every time they wish\n To get away therefrom,\n From anguish, they will be\n Forced back therein, and\n (It will be said), \"Taste ye\n The Penalty of Burning!\"\n23. God will admit those\n Who believe and work righteous deeds,\n To Gardens beneath which\n Rivers flow: they shall be\n Adorned therein with bracelets\n Of gold and pearls; and\n Their garments there\n Will be of silk.\n24. For they have been guided\n (In this life) to the purest\n Of speeches; they have been\n Guided to the Path of Him\n Who is Worthy of (all) Praise.\n25. As to those who have rejected\n (God), and would keep back (men)\n From the Way of God, and\n From the Sacred Mosque, which\n We have made (open) to (all) men\u2014\n Equal is the dweller there\n And the visitor from the country\n And any whose purpose therein\n Is profanity or wrong-doing\u2014\n Them will We cause to taste\n Of a most grievous Penalty.\n26. Behold! We gave the site,\n To Abraham, of the (Sacred) House,\n (Saying): \"Associate not anything\n (In worship) with Me;\n And sanctify My House\n For those who compass it round,\n Or stand up,\n Or bow, or prostrate themselves\n (Therein in prayer).\n27. \"And proclaim the Pilgrimage\n Among men: they will come\n To thee on foot and (mounted)\n On every kind of camel,\n Lean on accout of journeys\n Through deep and distant\n Mountain highways;\n28. \"That they may witness\n The benefits (provided) for them,\nAnd celebrate the name\n Of God, through the Days\n Appointed, over the cattle\n Which He has provided for them\n (For sacrifice): then eat ye\n Thereof and feed the distressed\n Ones in want.\n29. \"Then let them complete\n The rites prescribed\n For them, perform their vows,\n And (again) circumambulate\n The Ancient House.\"\n30. Such (is the Pilgrimage):\n Whoever honours the sacred\n Rites of God, for him\n It is good in the sight\n Of his Lord. Lawful to you\n (For food in Pilgrimage) are cattle,\n Except those mentioned to you\n (As exceptions): but shun\n The abomination of idols,\n And shun the word\n That is false,\u2014\n31. Being true in faith to God,\n And never assigning partners\nTo Him: if anyone assigns\n Partners to God, he is\n As if he had fallen\n From heaven and been snatched up\n By birds, or the wind\n Had swooped (like a bird\n On its prey) and thrown him\n Into a far-distant place.\n32. Such (is his state): and\n Whoever holds in honour\n The Symbols of God,\n (In the sacrifice of animals),\n Such (honour) should come truly\n From piety of heart.\n33. In them ye have benefits\n For a term appointed:\n In the end their place\n Of sacrifice is near\n The Ancient House.\n34. To every people did We\n Appoint rites (of sacrifice),\n That they might celebrate\n The name of God over\nThe sustenance He gave them\n From animals (fit for food).\n But your god is One God:\n Submit then your wills to him\n (In Isl\u0101m): and give thou\n The good news to those\n Who humble themselves,\u2014\n35. To those whose hearts,\n When God is mentioned,\n Are filled with fear,\n Who show patient perseverance\n Over their afflictions, keep up\n Regular prayer, and spend\n (In charity) out of what\n We have bestowed upon them.\n36. The sacrificial camels\n We have made for you\n As among the symbols from\n God: in them is (much)\n Good for you: then pronounce\n The name of God over them\n As they line up (for sacrifice):\n When they are down\n On their sides (after slaughter),\n Eat ye thereof, and feed\n Such as (beg not but)\n Live in contentment,\n And such as beg\n With due humility: thus have\nWe made animals subject\n To you, that ye\n May be grateful.\n37. It is not their meat\n Nor their blood, that reaches\n God: it is your piety\n That reaches Him: He\n Has thus made them subject\n To you, that ye may glorify\n God for his guidance to you:\n And proclaim the Good News\n To all who do right.\n38. Verily God will defend\n (From ill) those who believe:\n Verily, God loveth not\n Any that is a traitor\n To faith, or shows ingratitude.\n39. To those against whom\n War is made, permission\n Is given (to fight), because\n They are wronged;\u2014and verily,\n God is most Powerful\n For their aid;\u2014\n40. (They are) those who have\n Been expelled from their homes\nIn defiance of right,\n (For no cause) except\n That they say,\" Lord\n Is God\". Did not God\n Check one set of people\n By means of another,\n There would surely have been\n Pulled down monasteries, churches,\n Synagogues, and mosques, in which\n The name of God is commemorated\n In abundant measure. God will\n Certainly aid those who\n Aid His (cause);\u2014for verily\n God is Full of Strength,\n Exalted in Might,\n (Able to enforce His Will).\n41. (They are) those who,\n If We establish them\n In the land, establish\n Regular prayer and give\n Regular charity, enjoin\n The right and forbid wrong:\n With God rests the end\n (And decision) of (all) affairs.\n42. If they treat thy (mission)\n As false, so did the Peoples\nBefore them (with their Prophets),\u2014\n The People of Noah,\n And \u2019Ad and Tham\u016bd;\n43. Those of Abraham and L\u016bt;\n44. And the Companions\n Of the Madyan people;\n And Moses was rejected\n (In the same way). But I\n Granted respite to the Unbelievers,\n And (only) after that\n Did I punish them:\n But how (terrible) was\n My rejection (of them)!\n45. How many populations have We\n Destroyed, which were given\n To wrong-doing? They tumbled down\n On their roofs. And how many\n Wells are lying idle and neglected,\n And castles lofty and well-built?\n46. Do they not travel\n Through the land, so that\n Their hearts (and minds)\n May thus learn wisdom\nAnd their ears may\n Thus learn to hear?\n Truly it is not their eyes\n That are blind, but their\n Hearts which are\n In their breasts.\n47. Yet they ask thee\n To hasten on the Punishment!\n But God will not fail\n In His promise. Verily\n A Day in the sight of thy Lord\n Is like a thousand years\n Of your reckoning.\n48. And to how many populations\n Did I give respite, which\n Were given to wrong-doing?\n In the end I punished them.\n To Me is the destination (of all).\n49. Say: \"O men! I am\n (Sent) to you only to give\nA clear warning:\n50. \"Those who believe and work\n Righteousness, for them\n Is forgiveness and a sustenance\n Most generous.\n51. \"But those who strive\n Against Our Signs, to frustrate\n Them,\u2014they will be\n Companions of the Fire.\"\n52. Never did We send\n An apostle or a prophet\n Before thee, but, when he\n Framed a desire, Satan\n Threw some (vanity)\n Into his desire: but God\n Will cancel anything (vain)\n That Satan throws in,\n And God will confirm\n (And establish) His Signs:\n For God is full of knowledge\n And wisdom:\n53. That He may make\n The suggestions thrown in\n By Satan, but a trial\n For those in whose hearts\nIs a disease and who are\n Hardened of heart: verily\n The wrong-doers are in a schism\n Far (from the Truth):\n54. And that those on whom\n Knowledge has been bestowed may learn\n That the (Qur-\u0101n) is the Truth\n From thy Lord, and that they\n May believe therein, and their hearts\n May be made humbly (open)\n To it: for verily God is\n The Guide of those who believe,\n To the Straight Way.\n55. Those who reject Faith\n Will not cease to be\n In doubt concerning (Revelation)\n Until the Hour (of Judgment)\n Comes suddenly upon them,\n Or there comes to them\n The Penalty of a Day of Disaster.\n56. On that Day the Dominion\n Will be that of God:\n He will judge between them:\n So those who believe\n And work righteous deeds will be\n In Gardens of Delight.\n57. And for those who reject Faith\n And deny Our Signs,\n There will be a humiliating\n Punishment.\n58. Those who leave their homes\n In the cause of God,\n And are then slain or die,\n On them will God bestow verily\n A goodly Provision:\n Truly God is He Who\n Bestows the best Provision.\n59. Verily He will admit then\n To a place with which\n They shall be well pleased:\n For God is All-Knowing,\n Most Forbearing.\n60. That (is so). And if one\n Has retaliated to no greater\n Extent than the injury he received,\n And is again set upon\n Inordinately, God will help\n Him: for God is One\n That blots out (sins)\n And forgives (again and again).\n61. What is because God merges\n Night into Day, and He\n Merges Day into Night, and\n Verily it is God Who hears\nAnd sees (all things).\n62. That is because God\u2014He\n Is the Reality; and those\n Besides Him whom they invoke,\u2014\n They are but vain Falsehood:\n Verily God is He, Most High,\n Most Great.\n63. Seest thou not that God\n Sends down rain from the sky,\n And forthwith the earth\n Becomes clothed with green?\n For God is He Who understands\n The finest mysteries, and\n Is well-acquainted (with them).\n64. To Him belongs all that is\n In the heavens and on earth:\n For verily God,\u2014He is\n Free of all wants,\n Worthy of all praise.\n65. Seest thou not that God\n Has made subject to you (men)\n All that is on the earth,\n And the ships that sail\n Through the sea by His command?\n He withholds the sky (rain)\n From falling on the earth\n Except by His leave:\n For God is Most Kind\n And Most Merciful to man.\n66. It is He Who gave you life,\n Will cause you to die,\n And will again give you\n Life: truly man is\n A most ungrateful creature!\n67. To every People have We\n Appointed rites and ceremonies\n Which they must follow:\n Let them not then dispute\n With thee on the matter,\n But do thou invite (them)\n To thy Lord: for thou art\n Assuredly on the Right Way.\n68. If they do wrangle with thee,\n Say, \"God knows best\n What it is ye are doing.\"\n69. \"God will judge between you\n On the Day of Judgment\n Concerning the matters in which\n Ye differ.\"\n70. Knowest thou not that\n God knows all that is\n In heaven and on earth?\n Indeed it is all\n In a record, and that\n Is easy for God.\n71. Yet they worship, besides God,\n Things for which no authority\n Has been sent down to them,\n And of which they have\n (Really) no knowledge:\n For those that do wrong\n There is no helper.\n72. When Our Clear Signs\n Are rehearsed to them,\n Thou wilt notice a denial\n On the faces of the Unbelievers!\n They nearly attack with violence\n Those who rehearse Our Signs\n To them. Say, \"Shall I\n Tell you of something\n (Far) worse than these Signs?\n It is the Fire (of Hell)!\nGod has promised it\n To the Unbelievers!\n And evil is that destination!\"\n73. O men! Here is\n A parable set forth!\n Listen to it! Those\n On whom, besides God,\n Ye call, cannot create\n (Even) a fly, if they all\n Met together for the purpose!\n And if the fly should snatch\n Away anything from them,\n They would have no power\n To release it from the fly.\n Feeble are those who petition\n And those whom they petition!\n74. No just estimate have they\n Made of God: for God\n Is He Who is strong\n And able to carry out\n His Will.\n75. God chooses Messengers\n From angels and from men\n For God is He Who hears\n And sees (all things).\n76. He knows what is before them\n And what is behind them:\nAnd to God go back\n All questions (for decision).\n77. O ye who believe!\n Bow down, prostrate yourselves,\n And adore your Lord;\n And do good;\n That ye may prosper.\n78. And strive in His cause\n As ye ought to strive,\n (With sincerity and under discipline).\n He has chosen you, and has\n Imposed no difficulties on you\n In religion; it is the cult\n Of your father Abraham.\n It is He Who has named\n You Muslims, both before\n And in this (Revelation);\n That the Apostle may be\n A witness for you, and ye\n Be witnesses for mankind!\n So establish regular Prayer,\n Give regular Charity,\n And hold fast to God!\n He is your Protector\u2014\n The best to protect\n And the Best to help!","title":"The Holy Quran: S\u016bra XXII. \u1e24ajj, or The Pilgri...","type":"page"}
