T\u0101. S\u012bn.\n These are verses\n Of the Qur-\u0101n,\u2014a Book\n That makes (things) clear;\n2. A Guide; and Glad Tidings\n For the Relievers,\u2014\n3. Those who establish regular prayers\n And give in regular charity,\n And also have (full) assurance\n Of the Hereafter.\n4. As to those who believe not\n In the Hereafter, We have\n Made their deeds pleasing\n In their eyes; and so they\n Wander about in distraction.\n5. Such are they for whom\n A grievous Penalty is (waiting):\n And in the Hereafter theirs\n Will be the greatest loss.\n6. As to thee, the Qur-\u0101n\n Is bestowed upon thee\n From the presence of One\n Who is Wise and All-Knowing.\n7. Behold! Moses said\n To his family \"I perceive\n A fire; soon will I bring you\n From there some information,\n Or I will bring you\n A burning brand to light\n Our fuel, that ye may\n Warm yourselves.\n8. But when he came\n To the (Fire), a voice\n Was heard: \"Blessed are those\n In the Fire and those around:\n And Glory to God,\n The Lord of the Worlds.\n9. \"O Moses! Verily,\n I am God, the Exalted\n In Might, the Wise!...\n10. \"Now do thou throw thy rod!\"\n But when he saw it\n Moving (of its own accord)\n As if it had been a snake,\n He turned back in retreat,\n And retraced not his steps:\n \"O Moses!\" (it was said),\n \"Fear not: truly, in My presence,\n Those called as apostles\n Have no fear,\u2014\n11. \"But if any have done wrong\n And have thereafter substituted\n Good to take the place of evil,\n Truly, I am Oft-Forgiving,\n Most Merciful.\n12. \"Now put thy hand into\n Thy bosom, and it will\n Come forth white without stain\n (Or harm): (these are) among\n The nine Signs (thou wilt take)\n To Pharaoh and his people:\n For they are a people\n Rebellious in transgression.\"\n13. But when Our Signs came\n To them, that should have\"\"\n Opened their eyes, they said:\n \"This is sorcery manifest!\"\n14. And they rejected those Signs\n In iniquity and arrogance,\n Though their souls were convinced\n Thereof: so see what was\n The end of those\n Who acted corruptly!\n15. We gave (in the past)\n Knowledge to David and Solomon\n And they both said:\n \"Praise be to God, Who\n Has favoured us above many\n Of His servants who believe!\n16. And Solomon was David's heir.\n He said: \"O ye people!\n We have been taught the speech\"\n Of Birds, and on us\n Has been bestowed (a little)\n Of all things: this is\n Indeed Grace manifest (from God.)\"\n17. And before Solomon were marshalled\nHis hosts,\u2014of Jinns and men\n And birds, and they were all\n Kept in order and ranks.\n18. At length, when they came\n To a (lowly) valley of ants,\n One of the ants said:\n \"O ye ants, get into\n Your habitations, lest Solomon\n And his hosts crush you\n (Under foot) without knowing it.\"\n19. So he smiled, amused\n At her speech; and he said:\n \"O my Lord! so order me\n That I may be grateful\n For Thy favours, which Thou\n Hast bestowed on me and\n On my parents, and that\n I may work the righteousness\n That will please Thee:\n And admit me, by Thy Grace,\n To the ranks of Thy\n Righteous Servants.\"\n20. And he took a muster\n Of the Birds; and he said:\n \"Why is it I see not\n The Hoopoe? Or is he\n Among the absentees?\"\n21. \"I will certainly punish him\n With a severe penalty,\n Or execute him, unless he\n Bring me a clear reason\n (For absence).\"\n22. But the Hoopoe tarried not\n Far: he (came up and) said:\n \"I have compassed (territory)\n Which thou hast not compassed,\n And I have come to thee\n From Saba with tidings true.\n23. \"I found (there) a woman\n Ruling over them and provided\n With every requisite; and she\n Has a magnificent throne.\n24. \"I found her and her people\n Worshipping the sun besides God:\n Satan has made their deeds\n Seem pleasing in their eyes,\n And has kept them away\n From the Path,\u2014so\n They receive no guidance,\u2014\n25. \"(Kept them away from the Path),\n That they should not worship\n God, Who brings to light\n What is hidden in the heavens\n And the earth, and knows\n What ye hide and what\n Ye reveal.\n26. \"God!\u2014there is no god\n But He!\u2014Lord of the Throne's\n Supreme!\"\n27. (Solomon) said: \"Soon shall we\n See whether thou hast told\n The truth or lied!\n28. \"Go thou, with this letter\n Of mine, and deliver it\n To them: then draw back\n From them, and (wait to) see\n What answer they return\"...\n29. (The Queen) said: \"Ye chiefs!\n Here is\u2014delivered to me\u2014\n A letter worthy of respect.\n30. \"It is from Solomon, and is\n (As follows), 'In the name\n Of God, Most Gracious,\n Most Merciful:\n31. \"'Be ye not arrogant\n Against me, but come\n To me in submission\n (To the true Religion).'\"\n32. the said: \"Ye chiefs!\n Advise me in (this)\n My affair: no affair\n Have I decided\n Except in your presence.\"\n33. They said: \"We are endued\n With strength, and given\n To vehement war:\n But the command is\n With thee; so consider\n What thou wilt command.\"\n34. She said: \"Kings, when they\n Enter a country, despoil it,\nAnd make the noblest\n Of its people its meanest\n Thus do they behave.\n35. \"But I am going to send\n Him a present, and (wait)\n To see with what (answer)\n Return (my) ambassadors.\"\n36. Now when (the embassy) came\n To Solomon, he said:\n \"Will ye give me abundance\n In wealth? But that which\n God has given me is better\n Than that which He has\n Given you! Nay it is ye\n Who rejoice in your gift!\n37. \"Go back to them, and be sure\n We shall come to them\n With such hosts as they\n Will never be able to meet:\n We shall expel them\n From there in disgrace,\n And they will feel\n Humbled (indeed).\"\n38. He said (to his own men):\n \"Ye Chiefs! which of you\n Can bring me her throne\n Before they come to me\n In submission?\"\n39. Said an \u2018Ifrit, of the Jinns:\n \"I will bring it to thee\nBefore thou rise from thy\n Council: indeed I have\n Full strength for the purpose,\n And may he trusted.\"\n40. Said one who had knowledge\n Of the Book: \"I will\n Bring it to thee within\n The twinkling of an eye!\"\n Then when (Solomon) saw it\n Placed firmly before him,\n He said: \"This is\n By the grace of my Lord!\n To test me whether I am\n Grateful or ungrateful!\n And if any is grateful,\n Truly his gratitude is (a gain)\n For his own soul; hut if\n Any is ungrateful, truly\n My Lord is Free of all Needs,\n Supreme in Honour!\"\n41. He said: \"Transform her throne\n Out of all recognition by her:\n Let us see whether she\n Is guided (to the truth)\nOr is one of those who\n Receive no guidance.\"\n42. So when she arrived,\n She was asked, \"Is this\n Thy throne?\" She said,\n \"It was just like this;\n And knowledge was bestowed\n On us in advance of this,\n And we have submitted\n To God (in Islam).\"\n43. And he diverted her\n From the worship of others\n Besides God: for she was\n (Sprung) of a people\n That had no faith.\n44. She was asked to enter\n The lofty Palace: but\n When she saw it, she\n Thought it was a lake\n Of water, and she (tucked up\n Her skirts), uncovering her legs.\n He said: \"This is\n But a palace paved\nSmooth with slabs of glass.\"\n She said: \"O my Lord!\n I have indeed wronged\"\n My soul: I do (now)\n Submit (in Islam), with Solomon,\n To the Lord of the Worlds.\"\n45. We sent (aforetime),\n To the Tham\u016bd, their brother\n \u1e62ali\u1e25, saying, \"Serve God\":\n But behold, they became\n Two factions quarrelling\n With each other.\n46. He said: \"O my people!\n Why ask ye to hasten on\nThe evil in preference to the good?\n If only ye ask God for forgiveness,\n Ye may hope to receive mercy.\n47. They said: \"Ill omen\n Do we augur from thee\n And those that are with thee\".\n He said: \"Your ill omen\n Is with God; yea, ye are\n A people under trial.\"\n48. There were in the City\n Nine men of a family,\n Who made mischief in the land,\n And would not reform.\n49. They said: \"Swear\n A mutual oath by God\n That we shall make\n A secret night attack\n On him and his people,\n And that we shall then\n Say to his heir (when he\n Seeks vengeance), 'We were not\n Present at the slaughter\n Of his people, and we are\n Positively telling the truth'.\"\n50. They plotted and planned,\n But We too planned,\n Even while they perceived it not.\n51. Then see what was the end\n Of their plot!\u2014this,\n That We destroyed them\n And their people, all (of them).\n52. Now such were their houses,\u2014\n In utter ruin,\u2014because\n They practised wrong-doing.\n Verily in this is a Sign\n For people of knowledge.\n53. And We saved those\n Who believed and practised\n Righteousness.\n54. (We also sent) L\u016bt\n (As an apostle): behold,\n He said to his people,\n \"Do ye do what is shameful\n Though ye see (its iniquity)?\n55. Would ye really approach men\n In your lusts rather than\n Women? Nay, ye are\n A people (grossly) ignorant!\n56. But his people gave\n No other answer but this:\n They said, \"Drive out\nThe followers of L\u016bt from\n Your city: these are\n Indeed men who want\n To be clean and pure!\"\n57. But We saved him\n And his family, except\n His wife: her We destined\n To be of those\n Who lagged behind.\n58. And We rained down on them\n A shower (of brimstone):\n And evil was the shower\n On those who were admonished\n (But heeded not)!\n59. Say: Praise be to God,\n And Peace on His servants\n Whom He has chosen\n (For His Message). (Who)\n Is better?\u2014God or\n The false gods they associate\n (With Him)?\n60. Or, who has created\n The heavens and the earth,\n And who sends you down\n Rain from the sky?\n Yea, with it We cause\n To grow well-planted orchards\n Full of beauty and delight:\n It is not in your power\n To cause the growth\n Of the trees in them. (Can there be\n Another) god besides God?\n Nay, they are a people\n Who swerve from justice.\n61. Or, who has made the earth\n Firm to live in; made\n Rivers in its midst; set\n Thereon mountains immovable;\n And made a separating bar\n Between the two bodies\n Of flowing water?\n (Can there be another) god\n Besides God? Nay, most\n Of them know not.\n62. Or, who listens to the (soul)\n Distressed when it calls\n On Him, and who relieves\n Its suffering, and makes you\n(Mankind) inheritors of the earth?'\n (Can there be another) god\n Besides God? Little it is\n That ye heed!\n63. Or, who guides you\n Through the depths of darkness\n On land and sea, and who\n Sends the winds as heralds\n Of glad tidings, going before\n His Mercy? (Can there be\n Another) god besides God?\u2014\n High is God above what\n They associate with Him!\n64. Or, who originates Creation,\n Then repeats it,\n And who gives you sustenance\n From heaven and earth?\n (Can there be another) god\n Besides God? Say, \"Bring forth\n Your argument, if ye\n Are telling the truth!\"\n65. Say: None in the heavens\n Or on earth, except God,\n Knows what is hidden:\n Nor can they perceive\n When they shall be raised\n Up (for Judgment).\n66. Still less can their knowledge\n Comprehend the Hereafter: nay,\nThey are in doubt and uncertainty\n Thereanent; nay, they are blind\n Thereunto!\n67. The Unbelievers say: \"What!\n When we become dust,\n We and our fathers,\u2014shall we\n Really be raised (from the dead)?\n68. \"It is true we were promised\n This,\u2014we and our fathers\n Before (us): these are nothing\n But tales of the ancients.\"\n69. Say: \"Go ye through the earth\n And see what has been\n The end of those guilty\n (Of sin).\"\n70. But grieve not over them,\n Nor distress thyself\n Because of their plots.\n71. They also say: \"When will\n This promise (come to pass)?\n (Say) if ye are truthful.\"\n72. Say: \"It may be that\n Some of the events which\n Ye wish to hasten on\n May be (close) in your pursuit!\"\n73. But verily thy Lord is\n Full of grace to mankind:\n Yet most of them are ungrateful.\n74. And verily thy Lord knoweth\n All that their hearts do hide,\n As well as all that\n They reveal.\n75. Nor is there aught\n Of the Unseen, in heaven\n Or earth, but is (recorded)\n In a clear record.\n76. Verily this Qur-\u0101n doth explain\n To the Children of Israel\n Most of the matters\n In which they disagree.\n77. And it certainly is\n A Guide and a Mercy\n To those who believe.\n78. Verily thy Lord will decide\n Between them by His Decree:\n And He is Exalted in Might,\n All-Knowing.\n79. So put thy trust in God:\n For thou art on (the Path\n Of) manifest Truth.\n80. Truly thou canst not cause\n The Dead to listen, nor\n Canst thou cause the Deaf\n To hear the call,\n (Especially) when they\n Turn back in retreat.\n81. Nor canst thou be a guide\n To the Blind, (to prevent them)\n From straying: only those\n Wilt thou get to listen\n Who believe in Our Signs,\n And they will bow in Islam.\n82. And when the Word is\n Fulfilled against them (the unjust),\n We shall produce from the earth\n A Beast to (face) them:\n He will speak to them,\n For that mankind did not\n Believe with assurance\n In Our Signs.\n83. One Day We shall gather\n Together from every people\n A troop of those who reject\n Our Signs, and they shall\n Be kept in ranks,\u2014\n84. Until, when they come\n (Before the Judgment-seat),\n (God) will say: \"Did ye\n Reject My Signs, though ye\nComprehended them not\n In knowledge, or what\n Was it ye did?\"\n85. And the Word will be\n Fulfilled against them, because\n Of their wrong-doing, and they\n Will be unable to speak\n (In plea).\n86. See they not that We\n Have made the Night\n For them to rest in\n And the Day to give\n Them light? Verily in this\n Are Signs for any people \n That believe!\n87. And the Day that the Trumpet\n Will be sounded\u2014then will be\n Smitten with terror those\n Who are in the heavens,\n And those who are on earth,\n Except such as God will please\n (To exempt): and all shall come\n To His (Presence) as beings\n Conscious of their lowliness.\n88. Thou seest the mountains\n And thinkest them firmly fixed:\n But they shall pass away\n As the clouds pass away:\n(Such is) the artistry of God,\n Who disposes of all things\n In perfect order: for He is\n Well acquainted with all that ye do.\n89. If any do good, good will\n (Accrue) to them therefrom;\n And they will be secure\n From terror that Day.\n90. And if any do evil,\n Their faces will be thrown\n Headlong into the Fire:\n \"Do ye receive a reward\n Other than that which ye\n Have earned by your deeds?\"\n91. For me, I have been\n Commanded to serve the Lord\n Of this City, Him Who has\n Sanctified it and to Whom\n (Belong) all things:\n And I am commanded\n To be of those who bow\n In Islam to God's Will,\u2014\n92. And to rehearse the Qur-\u0101n:\n And if any accept guidance,\nThey do it for the good\n Of their own souls,\n And if any stray, say:\n \"I am only a Warner\".\n93. And say: \"Praise be to God,\n Who will soon show you\n His Signs, so that ye\n Shall know them\"; and thy Lord\n Is not unmindful\n Of all that ye do.","title":"The Holy Quran: S\u016bra XXVII.
