T\u0101. S\u012bn. M\u012bm.\n2. These are Verses of the Book\n That makes (things) clear.\n3. We rehearse to thee some\n Of the story of Moses\n And Pharaoh in Truth,\n For people who believe.\n4. Truly Pharaoh elated himself\n In the land and broke up\n Its people into sections,\n Depressing a small group\n Among them: their sons he slew,\n But he kept alive their females:\n For he was indeed\n A maker of mischief.\n5. And We wished to be\n Gracious to those who were\n Being depressed in the land,\n To make them leaders (in faith)\n And make them heirs,\n6. To establish a firm place\n For them in the land,\n And to show Pharaoh, Haman,\n And their hosts, at their hands,\n The very things against which\n They were taking precautions.\n7. So We sent this inspiration\n To the mother of Moses:\n \"Suckle (thy child), but when\n Thou hast fears about him,\n Cast him into the river,\n But fear not nor grieve:\n For We shall restore him\n To thee, and We shall make\n Him one of Our apostles.\"\n8. Then the people of Pharaoh\n Picked him up (from the river):\n (It was intended) that (Moses)\n Should be to them an adversary\n And a cause of sorrow:\n For Pharaoh and Haman\n And (all) their hosts were\n Men of sin.\n9. The wife of Pharaoh said:\n \"(Here is) a joy of the eye,'\n For me and for thee:\n Slay him not. It may be\nThat he will be of use\n To us, or we may adopt\n Him as a son.\" And they\n Perceived not (what they\n Were doing)!\n10. But there came to be\n A void in the heart\n Of the mother of Moses:\n She was going almost to\n Disclose his (case), had We\n Not strengthened her heart\n (With faith), so that she\n Might remain a (firm) believer.\n11. And she said to the sister\n Of (Moses), \"Follow him\".\n So she (the sister) watched him\n In the character of a stranger.\n And they knew not.\n12. And We ordained that he\n Refused suck at first, until\n (His sister came up\n And) said: \"Shall I\n Point out to you the people\n Of a house that will nourish\n And bring him up for you'\"\n And be sincerely attached\n To him?\"...\n13. Thus did We restore him\n To his mother, that her eye\n Might be comforted, that she\n Might not grieve, and that\n She might know that the promise\n Of God is true: but\n Most of them do not understand.\n14. When he reached full age,\n And was firmly established\n (In life), We bestowed on him\n Wisdom and knowledge: for thus\n Do We reward those\n Who do good.\n15. And he entered the City\n At a time when its people\n Were not watching: and he\n Found there two men fighting,\u2014\n One of his own religion,\n And the other, of his foes.\n Now the man of his own\n Religion appealed to him\n Against his foe, and Moses\n Struck him with his fist\n And made an end of him.\n He said: \"This is a work\n Of Evil (Satan): for he is\n An enemy that manifestly\n Misleads!\"\n16. He prayed: \"O my Lord!\n I have indeed wronged my soul!\n Do Thou then forgive me!\"\n So (God) forgave him: for He\n Is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.\n17. He said: \"O my Lord!\n For that Thou hast bestowed\n Thy Grace on me, never\n Shall I be a help\n To those who sin!\"\n18. So he saw the morning\n In the City, looking about,\n In a state of fear, when\n Behold, the man who had,\n The day before, sought his help\n Called aloud for his help\n (Again). Moses said to him:\n \"Thou art truly, it is clear,\n A quarrelsome fellow!\"\n19. Then, when he decided to lay\n Hold of the man who was\n An enemy to both of them,\n That man said: \"O Moses!\n Is it thy intention to slay me\n As thou slewest a man\n Yesterday? Thy intention is\n None other than to become\n A powerful violent man\n In the land, and not to be\n One who sets things right!\n20. And there came a man,\n Running, from the furthest end\n Of the City. He said:\n \"O Moses! the Chiefs\n Are taking counsel together\n About thee, to slay thee:\n So get thee away, for I\n Do give thee sincere advice.\"\n21. He therefore got away therefrom,\n Looking about, in a state\n Of fear. He prayed:\n \"O my Lord! save me\n From people given to wrong-doing.\"\n22. When, when he turned his face\n Towards (the land of) Madyan,\n He said: \"I do hope\n That my Lord will show me\n The smooth and straight Path.\"\n23. And when he arrived at\n The watering (place) in Madyan;\n He found there a group\n Of men watering (their flocks),\n And besides them he found\n Two women who were keeping\nBack (their flocks). He said:\n \"What is the matter with you?\"\n They said: \"We cannot water\n (Our flocks) until the shepherds\n Take back (their flocks):\n And our father is\n A very old man.\"\n24. So he watered (their flocks)\n For them; then he turned back\n To the shade, and said:\n \"O my Lord!\n Truly am I\n In (desperate) need\n Of any good\n That Thou dost send me!\"\n25. Afterwards one of the (damsels)\n Came (back) to him, walking\n Bashfully. She said: \"My father\n Invites thee that he may\n Reward thee for having watered\n (Our flocks) for us.\" So when\n He came to him and narrated\n The story, he said:\n\"Fear thou not: (well) hast thou\n Escaped from unjust people.\"\n26. Said one of the (damsels):\n \"O my (dear) father! engage\n Him on wages: truly the best\n Of men for thee to employ is\n The (man) who is strong and trusty\"\u2026\n27. He said: \"I intend to wed\n One of these my daughters\n To thee, on, condition that\n Thou serve me for eight years;\n But if thou complete ten years,\n It will be (grace) from thee.\n But I intend not to place\n Thee under a difficulty:\nThou wilt find me,\n Indeed, if God wills,\n One of the righteous.\"\n28. He said: \"Be that (the agreement)\n Between me and thee:\n Whichever of the two terms\n I fulfil, let there be\n No ill-will to me.\n Be God a witness\n To what we say.\"\n29. Now when Moses had fulfilled\n The term, and was travelling\n With his family, he perceived\n A fire in the direction\n Of Mount \u1e6c\u016br. He said\n To his family: \"Tarry ye;\n I perceive a fire; I hope\n To bring you from there\n Some information, or a burning\n Firebrand, that ye may\n Warm yourselves.\"\n30. But when he came\n To the (Fire), a voice\nWas heard from the right bank\n Of the valley, from a tree\n In hallowed ground:\n \"O Moses! Verily\n I am God, the Lord\n Of the Worlds\u2026\n31. \"Now do thou throw thy rod!\"\n But when he saw it\n Moving (of its own accord)\n As if it had been a snake,\n He turned back in retreat,\n And retraced not his steps:\n \"O Moses!\" (it was said),\n \"Draw near, and fear not:\n For thou art of those\n Who are secure.\n32. \"Move thy hand into\n Thy bosom, and it will\n Come forth white without stain\n (Or harm), and draw thy hand\n Close to thy side\n (To guard) against fear.\n Those are the two credentials\n From thy Lord to Pharaoh\n And his Chiefs: for truly\n They are a people\n Rebellious and wicked.\"\n33. He said: \"O my Lord!\n I have slain a man\nAmong them, and I fear\n Lest they slay me.\n34. \"And my brother Aaron\u2014\n He is more eloquent in speech\n Than I: so send him\n With me as a helper,\n To confirm (and strengthen) me:\n For I fear that they may\n Accuse me of falsehood.\"\n35. He said: \"We will certainly\n Strengthen thy arm through\n Thy brother, and invest you both\n With authority, so they\n Shall not be able to\n Touch you: with Our Signs\n Shall ye triumph,\u2014you two\n As well as those\n Who follow you.\"\n36. When Moses came to them\n With Our Clear Signs, they said:\n \"This is nothing but sorcery\n Faked up: never did we\n Hear the like among our fathers\n Of old!\"\n37. Moses said: \"My Lord\n Knows best who it is\n That comes with guidance\n From Him and whose End\n Will be best in the Hereafter:\n Certain it is that\n The wrong-doers will not prosper.\"\n38. Pharaoh said: \"O Chiefs!\n No god do I know for you\n But myself: therefore,\n O Haman! light me a (kiln\n To bake bricks) out of clay,\n And build me a lofty\n Palace, that I may mount up\n To the god of Moses:\n But as far as I am concerned,\n I think (Moses) is a liar!\"\n39. And he was arrogant and insolent\n In the land, beyond reason,\u2014\n He and his hosts: they thought\n That they would not have\n To return to Us!\"\n40. So We seized him\n And his hosts, and We\n Flung them into the sea:\n Now behold what was the End\n Of those who did wrong!\n41. And We made them (but)\n Leaders inviting to the Fire;\n And on the Day of Judgment\n No help shall they find.\n42. In this world We made\n A Curse to follow them:\n And on the Day of Judgment\n They will be among\n The loathed (and despised).\n43. We did reveal to Moses\n The Book after We had\n Destroyed the earlier generations,\n (To give) Insight to men,\n And Guidance and Mercy,\n That they might receive admonition.\n44. Thou wast not on the Western\n Side when We decreed\n The Commission to Moses,\n Nor wast thou a witness\n (Of those events).\n45. But We raised up (new)\n Generations, and long were the ages\n That passed over them;\n But thou vast not a dweller\n Among the people of Madyan,\n Rehearsing Our Signs to them;\n But it is We Who send\n Apostles (with inspiration).\n46. Nor wast thou at the side\n Of (the Mountain of) \u1e6c\u016br\n When We called (to Moses).\n Yet (art thou sent)\n As a Mercy from thy Lord,\n To give warning to a people\n To whom no warner had come\n Before thee: in order that\n They may receive admonition.\n47. If (We had) not (sent thee\n To the Quraish),\u2014in case\n A calamity should seize them\n For (the deeds) that their hands\n Have sent forth, they might say:\n \"Our Lord! why didst Thou not\nSend us an apostle? We\n Should then have followed\n Thy Signs and been amongst\n Those who believe!\"\n48. But (now), when the Truth\n Has come to them from Ourselves,\n They say, \"Why are not\n (Signs) sent to him, like\n Those which were sent to Moses?\"\n Do they not then reject\n (The Signs) which were formerly\n Sent to Moses? They say: \n \"Two kinds of sorcery,\n Each assisting the other .\n And they say: \"For us,\n We reject all (such things)!\"\n49. Say: \"Then bring ye\n A Book from God,\n Which is a better Guide\n Than either of them,\n That I may follow it!\n (Do), if ye are truthful!\"\n50. But if they hearken not\n To thee, know that they\n Only follow their own lusts:\n And who is more astray\n Than one who follows his own\n Lusts, devoid of guidance\n From God? For God guides not\n People given to wrong-doing.\n51. Now have We caused\n The Word to reach them\n Themselves, in order that\n They may receive admonition.\n52. Those to whom We sent\n The Book before this,\u2014they\n Do believe in this (Revelation);\n53. And when it is recited\n To them, they say: \"We\n Believe therein, for it is\n The Truth from our Lord:\n Indeed we have been Muslims\n (Bowing to God's Will)\n From before this.\n54. Twice will they be given\n Their reward, for that they\n Have persevered, that they avert\n Evil with Good, and that\n They spend (in charity) out of\n What We have given them.\n55. And when they hear vain talk,\n They turn away therefrom\n And say: \"To us our deeds,\n And to you yours;\nPeace be to you: we\n Seek not the ignorant.\"\n56. It is true thou wilt not\n Be able to guide every one;\n Whom thou lowest; but God\n Guides those whom He will.\n And He knows best those\n Who receive guidance.\n57. They say: \"If we were\n To follow the guidance with thee,\n We should be snatched away\n From our land.\" Have We not\n Established for them a secure\n Sanctuary, to which are brought\n As tribute fruits of all kinds,\u2014\n A provision from Ourselves?\n But most of them understand not.\n58. And how many populations\n We destroyed, which exulted\n In their life (of ease and plenty)!\n Now those habitations of theirs,\n After them, are deserted,\u2014\n All but a (miserable) few!\n And We are their heirs!\"\n59. Nor was thy Lord the one\n To destroy a population until\n He had sent to its Centre\n An apostle, rehearsing to them\n Our Signs; nor are We\n Going to destroy a population\n Except when its members\n Practise iniquity.\n60. The (material) things which\n Ye are given are but\n The conveniences of this life\n And the glitter thereof;\n But that which is with God\n Is better and more enduring:\n Will ye not then be wise?\n61. Are (these two) alike?\u2014\n One to whom We have made\n A goodly promise, and who\n Is going to reach its (fulfilment),\n And one to whom We have\n Given the good things of this\n Life, but who, on the Day\n Of Judgment, is to be among\n Those brought up (for punishment)?\n62. That Day (God) will\n Call to them, and say:\n \"Where are My 'partners'?\u2014\n Whom ye imagined (to be such)?\"\n63. Those against whom the charge\n Will be proved, will say:\n \"Our Lord! These are the ones\n Whom we led astray:\n We led them astray, as we\n Were astray ourselves: we free\n Ourselves (from them) in Thy presence:\n It was not us they worshipped.\"\n64. It will be said (to them):\n \"Call upon your 'partners'\n (For help)\": they will call\n Upon them, but they will not\n Listen to them; and they\n Will see the Penalty (before them);\n (How they will wish)\n 'If only they had been\n Open to guidance!'\n65. That Day (God) will\n Call to them, and say:\n \"What was the answer\n Ye gave to the apostles?\"\n66. Then the (whole) story that day\n Will seem obscure to them\n (Like light to the blind)\n And they will not be able\n (Even) to question each other.\n67. But any that (in this life)\n Had repented, believed, and worked\n Righteousness, will have hopes\n To be among those who\n Achieve salvation.\n68. Why by Lord does create and choose\n As He pleases: no choice\n Have they (in the matter):\n Glory to God! and far\n Is He above the partners\n They ascribe (to Him)!\n69. And thy Lord knows all\n That their hearts conceal\n And all that they reveal.\n70. And He is God: there is\n No god. but He. To Him\n Be praise, at the first\n And at the last:\n For Him is the Command,\n And to Him shall ye\n (All) be brought back.\n71. Say: See ye? If God\n Were to make the Night\nPerpetual over you to the Day\n Of Judgment, what god\n Is there other than God,\n Who can give you enlightenment?\n Will ye not then hearken?\n72. Say: See ye? If God\n Were to make the Day\n Perpetual over you to the Day\n Of Judgment, what god\n Is there other than God,\n Who can give you a Night\n In which ye can rest?\n Will ye not then see?\n73. It is out of His Mercy\n That He has made for you\n Night and Day,\u2014that ye\n May rest therein, and that\n Ye may seek of His Grace;\u2014\n And in order that ye\n May be grateful.\n74. The Day that He will\n Call on them, He will say:\n \"Where are My 'partners'?\u2014\n Whom ye imagined (to be such)?\"\n75. And from each people\n Shall We draw a witness,\n And We shall say: \"Produce\n Your Proof\": then shall they\n Know that the Truth is in\n God (alone), and the (lies)\n Which they invented will\n Leave them in the lurch.\n76. Q\u0101r\u016bn was doubtless,\n Of the people of Moses; but\n He acted insolently towards them:\n Such were the treasures We\n Had bestowed on him, that\n Their very keys would\n Have been a burden to\n A body of strong men.\n Behold, his people said to him:\n \"Exult not, for God loveth not\n Those who exult (in riches).\n77. \"But seek, with the (wealth)\n Which God has bestowed on thee,\n The Home of the Hereafter,\n Nor forget thy portion in this\nWorld: but do thou good,\n As God has been good\n To thee, and seek not\n (Occasions for) mischief in the land:\n For God loves not those\n Who do mischief.\"\n78. He said: \"This has been given\n To me because of a certain\n Knowledge which I have.\"\n Did he not know that God\n Had destroyed, before him,\n (Whole) generations,\u2014which were\n Superior to him in strength\n And greater in the amount\n (Of riches) they had collected?\n But the wicked are not\n Called (immediately) to account\n For their sins.\n79. So he went forth among\n His people in the (pride\n Of his worldly) glitter.\n Said those whose aim is\n The Life of this World:\n \"Oh! that we had the like\n Of what Q\u0101r\u016bn has got!\n For he is truly a lord\n Of mighty good fortune!\"\n80. But those who had been granted\n (True) knowledge said: \"Alas\n For you! The reward of God\n (In the Hereafter) is best\n For those who believe\n And work righteousness: but this\nNone shall attain, save those\n Who steadfastly persevere\n (in good).\"\n81. Then We caused the earth\n To swallow up him and\n His house; and he had not\n (The least little) party\n To help him against God,\n Nor could he defend himself.\n82. And those who had envied\n His position the day before\n Began to say on the morrow:\n \"Ah! It is indeed God\n Who enlarges the provision\"'\n Or restricts it, to any\n Of His servants He pleases!\n Had it not been that God\n Was gracious to us, He\n Could have caused the earth\n To swallow us up! Ah!\n Those who reject God\n Will assuredly never prosper.\"\n83. What Home of the Hereafter\n We shall give to those\n Who intend not high-handedness\n Or mischief on earth:\nAnd the End is (best)\n For the righteous.\n84. If any does good, the reward\n To him is better than\n His deed; but if any\n Does evil, the doers of evil\n Are only punished (to the extent)\n Of their deeds.\n85. Verily He Who ordained\n The Qur-\u0101n for thee, will bring\n Thee back to the Place\n Of Return. Say: \"My Lord\n Knows best who it is\n That brings true guidance,\n And who is in manifest error.\"\n86. And thou hadst not expected\n That the Book would be\n Sent to thee except as\n A Mercy from thy Lord:\n Therefore lend not thou support\n In any way to those\nWho reject (God's Message).\n87. And let nothing keep thee\n Back from the Signs of God\n After they have been revealed\n To thee: and invite (men)\n To thy Lord, and be not\n Of the company of those\n Who join gods with God.\n88. And call not, besides God,\n On another god. There is\n No god but He. Everything\n (That exists) will perish\n Except His own Face\n To Him belongs the Command,\n And to Him will ye\n (All) be brought back.","title":"The Holy Quran: S\u016bra XXVIII.
