This paper will treat the latter of these. The\n engine described here is suitable for either interstellar or\n atmospheric travel.\n \n This engine is of a dual-mode design; it will optionally produce\n either gravitons or tachyons.\n \n ENGINE DESIGN\n \n The engine or propulsion unit proper consists of six discrete\n elements (see fig. 1).\n \n 1) the shield coil - required to protect the crew/inhabitants\n of the ship from any harmful radiation. The shield\n itself is a high-power electromagnet operating in a\n steady state (DC).\n \n 2) the exciter coil is in reality an auto-transformer,\n operating much like a 'Tesla coil', but at much higher\n power levels, voltages, and frequency. Its purpose is\n to excite the atomic structure of the core material\n into production of either tachyons or gravitons (these\n two events occur at different power levels and\n frequencies).\n \n 3) This element is the 'pump', its operation is much like a\n magnetic shock-tube. It will start and maintain\n movement of particles from the core in the direction of\n the exhaust.\n \n \n Page 1\n \n \n \n \n \n 4) The focusing element. Here the responsibility is to shape\n the particle stream into something useful. This is the\n element that can either make the basic unit an engine\n or a weapon.\n \n 5) The core, is a stack of particle producers separated by\n some insulating material. In a dual mode engine the\n material for one kind of particle acts as an insulator\n for the other.\n \n 6) Not shown in the figure is the control system, this is\n normally a collection of high speed computers and high\n energy power control circuits.\n \n \n +--------------------------------------------+\n | a |\n | +-----------+-----+-----------------+-----+\n | | b | c | | d |\n | +-----------+-----+-----------------+-----+\n | | e |\n | +-----------+-----+-----------------+-----+\n | | | | | |\n | +-----------+-----+-----------------+-----+\n | |\n +--------------------------------------------+\n \n fig. 1\n \n a. This field\n is required especially in interstellar propulsion; tachyons can be\n very ionizing and therefore destructive.\n \n The magnetic shield can me made by using large gauge wire (low gauge\n numbers) and winding many turns.\n \n The gage of the wire is important here, as it will determine the\n amount of electrical current that the magnet can handle.\n \n If it is at all possible, the use of small diameter, insulated\n copper tubing may be used. By pumping coolant through the magnet\n larger fields may be generated.\n \n \n Page 2\n \n \n \n \n \n On the outside of the shield magnet a material such as 'mu-metal' or\n some other magnetic shielding should be used, so as to further\n shield the operators from the engine.\n \n This sub-system is probably the most difficult to build. While the\n construction of the magnet itself is not difficult, the power supply\n may be another matter.\n \n Electromagnets, by their nature, develop a field that is\n proportional to the amount of current (amperes) flowing through\n them. Thus it is important to build a power source that can not only\n develop a sufficiently high voltage, but it must also supply the\n required current. This power should be as close to 'pure' DC (direct\n current) as possible.\n \n EXCITER COIL\n \n The exciter of the system is very much like the 'Tesla coil' or\n auto-transformer. As an example of an auto-transformer, I submit the\n television 'flyback' transformer.\n \n While these examples are by comparison crude, they will serve in the\n construction of a model. As in the auto-transformer, the 'turns\n ratio' is important. The higher the ratio the greater the voltage\n that may be developed.\n \n Another important factor here is the impedance of the sub-system.\n Since this will be working at high frequencies (several megahertz\n for graviton production, and 10 to 100 times higher for tachyons)\n the AC resistance or impedance must be taken into account, this\n impedance must be kept to a\n minimum.\n \n This part of the system, like the shield, does its job by the\n magnetic field it generates, therefore, the current flow through the\n exciter must be as high as possible, though not as high as the\n shield.\n \n Again the power supply is important, it should be able to provide\n the necessary voltage (several hundred volts) at moderately high\n current levels (up to 30 amps).\n \n THE PUMP\n \n This element functions much like a 'magnetic shock tube' but again\n at high frequencies (megahertz). While the power levels here are\n somewhat reduced, it is still important to have enough power to do\n the job.\n \n The function of the pump is to 'pull' quanta of either gravitons or\n tachyons from the 'stack' and send them down the length of the\n engine.\n \n This is done by setting up a traveling magnetic wave, see fig. 3 for\n a crude schematic of this pump. It is again important to consider\n the impedance of this component.\n \n \n \n \n Page 3\n \n \n \n \n \n multiple turns on coil\n +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+------>\n | | | | | | | | |\n = = = = = = = = = pulsed\n capacitors-> = = = = = = = = = DC input.\n | | | | | | | | |\n --------------------------------------->\n \n \n It will be noticed that the input to this element is pulsed DC, and\n that the element is referred to as an AC element.\n \n The nature of this such that it functions in the following manner.\n \n When power is applied the capacitors charge in turn creating the\n effect of many smaller electromagnets stacked end to end, when the\n last capacitor in the chain is charged, power is removed, thus\n allowing the capacitors to discharge\n \n (high voltage/current diodes across each magnet element\n will allow for proper discharge of the capacitors).\n \n When the capacitors are discharged power is once again applied.\n \n Because of the nature of the pulsed DC and the current requirements,\n high speed switching electronics are called for to control this\n element.\n \n FOCUSING ELEMENT\n \n The focusing element used here would be much like the 'yoke' used in\n television. The purpose here is to create a beam of particles and to\n 'bend' that beam in the desired direction.\n \n The requirements for the focusing coils are greatly relaxed, but,\n the need for high power still exists.\n \n CONTROL SYSTEM\n \n If this system were to be used only as a 'steady state demo' the\n requirements here would be small.\n \n Simple power supplies and switching circuits would be the only\n requirement. However, if the system were to be used in a starship\n the requirements would change.\n \n In a flight situation the dynamic control of 'exhaust' and power\n levels would exist. If used in a planetary mode, one could probably\n 'get away' with using something like a personal computer (I\n personally would recommend at least a '386' based machine).\n \n However if used in interstellar flight then the use of something\n like a 'Cray' would be more in order (though I would doubt that even\n the fastest of machines known here on earth would suit).\n \n In an interplanetary mode, where one is not traveling 'faster than\n light', again a PC (486) would probably work.\n \n So that's basically it. A suitable air/space frame for a ship and\n \n Page 4\n \n \n \n \n \n three of these engines and one could go 'star-hopping'. Though I\n would warn against 'faster than light' travel due to the 'unknown'\n factors involved.\n \n It has been said that when one attempts to travel faster than light\n it must be done 'smartly', i.e. the \"jump to light speed\". It is\n said that to merely accelerate through the light 'limit' is\n dangerous.\n \n If there are any questions or comments, I can be reached through Jim\n Stewart at the BBS known as ORDO ARGENTUM ASTRUM (fidonode 1:346/13)\n or on the UFO echo.\n \n --------------------------------------------------------------------\n \n NOTE: Some of the sources of information cannot be divulged, sorry.\n But, it has nothing to do with any earth government.
