(See the Prescott, Arizona Daily\n Courier for March 14, 1997 \"UFO Sightings in\n PV, Other Areas.\")\n In Glendale (population 96,988), orange globes\n hovered over a suburban neighborhood for two hours,\n from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. People were \"looking up at\n what they said were orange balls of light. They were\n very scared...In fact, my 80-year-old father-in-law was\n shouting on the phone at one point. My wife and I\n did what we could to calm him down and let him\n know what we had tried to tell him about UFOs over\n the years,\" Billy Dee of Wisconsin reported.\n On Tuesday, March 18, the Arizona Republic ran\n a story on the flap. According to reporter Susie\n Steckner, the \"first call came from former police\n officers who spotted\" the UFOs \"near Paulden, north\n of Prescott, in Yavapai County.\"\n \"The bright orange-red lights formed the shape of\n a boomerang...with a larger grouping in the lead, followed\n by a single light.\"\n Shortly after 8 p.m., calls came flooding in from\n Prescott, Prescott Valley, Dewey, Chris Valley,\n Glendale and Phoenix.\n \"Tim MacDonald, 11, was leaving his Cub Scout\n meeting in Phoenix when he saw the bizarre object.\n 'It looked like a Stealth bomber,' he said, 'It was in a\n triangle shape and had three lights. It was moving very\n slowly. It was there for two or three minutes...When it\n disappeared, I thought it was a UFO.'\" (See the Arizona\n Republic for March 18, 1997.)\n During its 5 p.m. newcast on March 17, Channel 12\n in Phoenix stated that the glowing orange spheres seen\n March 13 over the Gila River Indian Reservation south of\n the city were \"military flares.\" The announcer reportedly\n said, \"The strange lights over Phoenix were explained\n as an anti-aircraft experiment in a military area 50 miles\n (80 kilometers) south of Phoenix.\"\n Lt. Col. Mike Hauser, USAF, a spokesman for Luke\n Air Force Base, told the Arizona Republic: \"Everybody is\n telling us we have UFOs stashed all over the Air Force.\n I'm not taking issue with what people saw (but) lots of\n things can make lights.\"\n On Wednesday, March 19, videographer Tom King\n and a group of ufologists went to the state park at South\n Mountain, just south of Phoenix, hoping to catch more\n UFOs on tape. But park rangers ordered the group off\n the mountain at 9:30 p.m.\n \"To our surprise, we were hustled out of the park\n early,\" King reported. \"The park usually closes at 11 p.m.\n We were told to leave at 9:24. The park rangers were\n storming up the peak and announced over the loudspeaker,\n 'The park is closed. Leave now. The park is closed.\n Leave while you can.'\" (Many thanks to Bill Hamilton,\n Errol Bruce-Knapp, Tom King, Billy Dee and Steve\n Wilson, Jr. for this story.)\n \n GUNSHIPS CHASE THREE UFOs\n OVER WEST VIRGINIA\n \n On Tuesday, March 11, 1997, at 6:30 p.m., which\n was the second night of the UFO flap in Phoenix, three\n orange spheres appeared over the south bank of the\n Kanawha River, in the South Hills section of\n Charleston, West Virginia.\n Patricia J. Blake and her nine-year-old daughter\n were on Oakwood Road in South Hills when they\n sighted the objects. \"The first light was coming down\n towards the woods vertically,\" Mrs. Blake said, \"It was\n very orange and had a long trail behind it. Two other\n lights of the same description were also coming down,\n also with tails behind them. The first one was now in\n the middle and seemed to slow down at one point.\"\n Mrs. Blake said the three UFOs were arrayed\n like this:\n 0 0\n 0\n \n \"Then all three appeared to stay in this position\n for a few minutes, the larger moving rather slowly to\n our right. When we first saw them, they were maybe\n 45 degrees above the horizon (and then) came down\n to a much lower angle, I would say 25 degrees.\"\n Mrs. Blake estimated that the UFOs hovered over\n a wooded area south of Route 61 and west of Route 119.\n \"The lights darted to the west, somewhat southwest,\n hovered at the second site for 8 to 10 minutes,\" she\n added. \"It was still daylight and the sky was nearly\n cloudless.\" The UFOs then sped away.\n At 6:45 p.m., four C-130 Air National Guard planes\n flew across the Kanawha River, heading southwest in\n the same direction as the orange UFOs. Mrs. Blake\n said she believes the planes came from Yeager Field\n airport, northeast of Charleston. (Email Interview)\n \n ORANGE GLOBES REPORTED\n OVER QUEBEC AND VERMONT\n \n In addition to Arizona and West Virginia, \"orange\n sphere\" UFOs were also seen over Quebec. Since\n Friday, March 14, the ufological group CEIPI has\n interviewed 24 eyewitnesses.\n Most of the sightings took place over Breckenridge,\n a small town on the north shore of the Ottawa River\n near Aylemer (population 25,724), just west of\n Canada's capital city, Ottawa.\n On Friday, March 14, shortly before 8 p.m., a\n glowing orange light was seen over Breckenridge.\n Shortly after 8, a man in Gatineau, Quebec\n (population 73,479) eight miles (12 kilometers)\n north of Ottawa, saw \"a definite orange light.\"\n At 8:45 p.m., another man \"saw the same thing\n but a little more yellow\" over the Parc de la Gatineau,\n along the Ottawa River.\n On Saturday, March 15, at 10:15 p.m., a total of\n 10 eyewitnesses told CEIPI that they saw \"an unknown\n object\" hovering close to the ice on the Ottawa River.\n The UFO had six arrays of white light and appeared\n in the same place in the Parc de la Gatineau off\n Route 148 as the previous night.\n On Monday, March 17, at 9:50 p.m., another ten\n witnesses saw \"a very brilliant and strong\" aerial\n light glowing behind the mountain at Breckenridge.\n According to Jean Casault of CEIPI, the Aylmer\n police reportedly told his group that the lights were\n \"military flares\" being lit on the firing range at CFB\n Connaught, near Ottawa.\n Meanwhile, below the border, radio buff Tony\n O'Neill switched on his BC860XLT 100-channel\n 12-band Uniden Bearcat scanner. At 7:20 p.m. on\n Monday, March 17, he picked up an intriguing\n exchange between Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs)\n and six jetliner pilots.\n The pilots were talking to the ATCs in Albany,\n New York and Burlington, Vermont, he said. \"One\n pilot radioed 'A bright light approached us, went\n vertical and dropped into the horizon.'\"\n The pilot asked both ATCs to confirm his\n position, and they did--the jetliner was 30 miles\n (48 kilometers) east of Burlington or 150 miles\n (240 kilometers) northeast of Albany. That puts\n the UFO over the forest area just south of\n Hardwick, Vermont (population 1,476)\n Six pilots discussed the sighting with the\n towers, O'Neill said, describing the UFO as\n having \"fire coming out of the back and left or\n made a contrail.\" Controllers asked the pilots\n if they would be willing to file a report. Some said\n yes and were given the phone number of the Federal\n Aviation Administration (FAA) center in Nashua, New\n Hampshire. (Email Interview)\n (Many thanks to Jean Casault and Helene Dupont\n of CEIPI for this report.)\n \n ANOTHER MYSTERY OBJECT\n SEEN IN FLORIDA KEYS\n \n At 6:30 a.m. on January 24, 1997, Sherry Howell\n and her husband left Key West to drive back to their\n home in Florida. As they drove north on Route 1, a\n thunderstorm crowded the western horizon over the\n Gulf of Mexico. At 7:30 a.m., just north of Marathon\n (population 1,500), \"we were crossing a bridge when\n I saw the first one,\" Sherry reported. \"Then I saw what\n seemed to be a cloud...it developed into an object like\n the first only much lower on the horizon and much\n closer to the highway.\"\n While her husband drove, Sherry snapped some\n photos of both objects. \"The (second) object was no\n more than a half-mile from us. The other was much\n higher in the sky and so it was more difficult to estimate\n distance. Both objects were silvery gray.\"\n She estimated that the more distant UFO was \"the\n size of a man's thumbnail at arm's length\" while the\n closer one was \"larger than a bus.\"\n \"The front of the larget object had a darker gray\n front,\" she said, \"It reminded me of the front of a\n microwave (oven). Neither object moved while we were\n observing them.\"\n Mrs. Howell sent her roll of film to a developer.\n But the finished photos showed only the dark overcast\n sky--not the objects. (Email Interview)\n \n FAST FLYBY ON FRANCE'S\n MEDITERRANEAN SHORE\n \n On Monday, March 17, 1997, at 9:04 a.m., \"a bright\n streak\" appeared in the sky over Montpellier, a seaport\n city on the Mediterranean midway between Nimes and\n Narbonne. The object was seen by commuters driving\n to work and by mothers dropping off their children at\n school. Witnesses described the UFO as \"moving\n very fast from the northeast to the southeast.\"\n The UFOs semi-circular flight path was confirmed\n by the pilot of an Air France jetliner, who spotted the\n object at 30,000 feet over Montpellier. \"The phenomenon\n disappeared very quickly.\" (Many thanks to SOS OVNI\n for this report.)\n \n UFO ZAPS TEENAGED GIRL IN\n PUNTA ARENAS, CHILE\n \n On or about February 25, 1997, teenager Maria\n Amparo Galvez was walking home from school in her\n hometown of Puerto Arenas, at the southern tip of\n Chile, when a glowing UFO suddenly appeared.\n According to Carlos Munoz, an investigator for\n Agrupacion de Investigaciones Ovniologicas (AION),\n Maria ran away and \"was hit in the back by many\n small balls of light--flashes that peppered her back.\"\n Maria remembers nothing else of the strange\n incident except \"waking up at another location\n four hours later.\"\n On February 24, 1997, an odd \"ring-shaped OVNI\"\n (Spanish acronym for UFO) was seen hovering above\n Lago (Lake) de Rapel in the Andes.\n The following day, February 25, 1997, Fuerzas\n Aereas de Chile's (Chilean Air Force's) crack aerobatics\n team, Los Halcones, was performing at an air show in\n Pucon when a UFO slipped into the restricted airspace.\n \"The object was ring-like,\" AION reported, \"It looked\n like a ring of smoke but very bright. It turned on its axis\n and left the area very slowly (about 60 mph), moving\n east. The object was filmed by two different witnesses,\n one of them the air traffic controller at Pucon.\"\n (Many thanks to Luis Sanchez for this story.)\n \n TWO SAUCERS SIGHTED NEAR\n AIRPORT IN LIMA, PERU\n \n On Monday, March 17, 1997, at 11 p.m., people\n living in Boca Negra, a suburban town at the north end\n of Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chavez spotted two\n disc-shaped UFOs beyond the airport's runway, near\n the beach. Boca Negra is 20 kilometers (12 miles)\n north of Lima, the capital of Peru.\n According to China's Xinhua news agency, about\n a dozen witnesses described the UFOs as \"saucer-\n shaped craft...with multicolored lights flashing\n intermittently.\" The UFOs hovered for several minutes\n and then flew away to the northeast. (Many thanks\n to Erik S. for this story.)\n \n NEW SIGHTING IN NORTHEAST\n CORNER OF BRAZIL\n \n On February 22, 1997, at 4:58 p.m., Messias de\n Oliveira was walking through the Bairro de Nordexte\n in Aracagi, a town in Brazil's northeastern state of\n Joao Pessoa. Aracagi is close to Guarabira, which\n has been the focus of a UFO flap that began on\n April 4, 1996.\n As she walked by the Compostagem bus stop,\n she saw \"an oval-shaped light, extremely bright,\n rising into the air, giving the appearance of being\n hidden behind the bus station. It gave off whitish\n smoke.\" At first, Messias \"thought it was a teardrop\n shaped fireworks display before realizing it was far\n stranger than that.\" She thought, \"It's going to fall,\"\n but \"the object continued to rise noiselessly into the\n air.\" She was reportedly \"shaken by the experience.\"\n (See the Winter 1997 issue of Samizdat. Muito\n obrigado a Scott Corrales para ese.)\n \n T.A.S.K. AND THE SAUCER OF\n MADISON COUNTY\n \n On Wednesday, March 12, 1997, at 8 p.m., a huge\n \"flying disc\" estimated to be 100 feet (30 meters) in\n diameter, appeared over Mount Sterling, Ohio\n (population 1,623), a small town in Madison County\n 22 miles (35 kilometers) southwest of Columbus.\n The saucer was seen by two couples, one at each\n end of the town. They estimated that it floated 50\n feet (15 meters) off the ground and flew from east to\n west. \"It was over the town for four and a half minutes.\n There was no noise. The departure path was to the\n west at a very quick speed.\"\n According to investigator Jim Donohue of Equinox,\n the eyewitnesses included a woman age 35, a girl\n age 14, a man in his early 70s and another man in\n his middle 50s.\n The same night, at 9:15 p.m., Ron Schaffner of\n Tri-States Advocates of Scientific Knowledge\n (T.A.S.K.) received a call from a farmer in Aberdeen\n (population 1,600), a town on the Ohio River. The\n man reported \"a formation of three to five lights\"\n and the lights \"appeared orange or white-red in color.\n Three lights in a row, then two on top.\"\n The same farm was visited by a smilar array of\n UFO lights the night of October 16, 1996. The UFOs\n appeared near the zenith of the barn on Flaugher\n Hill Road in Aberdeen. Three T.A.S.K. members,\n Kenneth Young, Terry Enders and Dale Farmer,\n interviewed the farmer back in October. The group's\n investigation in Aberdeen continues. (Many thanks\n to Kenneth Young, T.A.S.K. public relations\n director, for this story.)\n \n From the UFO Files...\n \n WHERE IS JOAN WILLIAMS?\n \n One of the strangest cases in the annals of the\n Lake Michigan Triangle took place 32 years ago\n this week.\n \"She was Joan Williams, 39, a Chicago Heights\n (Illinois) schoolteacher who owned a Cessna 170B,\n N2522C. She left Wings Airport, Chicago, at noon\n on a Saturday morning, March 20, 1965, carrying\n fuel sufficient for four hours, 30 minutes. She was\n not on a flight plan. She has not been seen since.\"\n \"For some reason the case stimulated the\n interest of the Chicago newspapers. It stayed in the\n headlines for weeks as officials searched vainly for\n some evidence of what happened. Virtually everyone\n Miss Williams knew was contacted. Her bank records\n and personal life were investigated thoroughly on the\n chance that the disappearance was intentional. The\n lake (Lake Michigan) was combed for some scrap of\n wreckage that might solve the mystery.\"\n But the search was in vain. Joan Williams's\n Cessna vanished from the FAA radar scope while\n the plane was airborne southwest of Ludington,\n Michigan. She has not been seen since.\n (See THE GREAT LAKES TRIANGLE by Jay Gourley,\n Fawcett Gold Medal Books, 1977, pages 164-165)\n \n FUN UFO WEBSITES\n \n Don't miss our parent site, UFO INFO, at this\n address: https://www.ftech.net/~ufoinfo/index.htm\n Also, back issues of UFO ROUNDUP can be\n found at https://www.ftech.net/~ufoinfo/roundup.hts\n \n That's it for this week.
